CAROLINA STARTED TO FEEL LIKE A BURDEN THE MOMENT HER FATHER DIED, so last summer she decided that she'd act like one too. Now she moves through the beach house like a passing ship, going from one party to another while her aunt Susannah sighs out she's going through a phase, and her cousins exchange knowing glances. She doesn't let herself think for too long, scared of what kind of pain she'll uncover. It's safer like this— she'll drown under the weight of whatever the alcohol helps to block out. It is.

Or so, she lets herself believe. After all, no one had really stepped in to tell her otherwise. Then Cam Cameron starts to sneak his way in— recently rejected fling of Belly's with an obsession with whales and understanding eyes. God, he should have ran for the hills the moment he saw her. Yet, he didn't. He stopped around to listen to her woes and offer his judgment-less words.

Maybe, just maybe, he can help her start to feel things again.
