How do you fail study hall?" Dad asked incredulously.
"Easy, you don't show up." I chuckled.
The both of us were sitting downstairs eating breakfast while Bella was upstairs getting dressed for school. I had just finished explaining to Dad how easy it is to fail your classes and he sighed in disbelief every time I explained it to him.
"Good morning." Bella smiled shyly at us as she walked into our small kitchen. She had a certain glow about her and I narrowed my eyes at her and she shifted nervously under my glare.
"Well aren't you chipper this morning," Dad commented.
"It's Friday." She shrugged and played with the zipper on her sweater. She picked up her bag from the floor when we heard a car pull up. "Well, that's, uh, Jessica. Gotta go." She smiled nervously. I raised my eyebrows at her and she gave me a small smile.
"Have a good day." I winked at her. She gave me a pointed look and I chuckled.
"Let me know how it goes at your doctor's appointment." I nodded and she left the house. I watched through the foggy window as she practically skipped to Edward's car. I shook my head and looked back at Dad who seemed completely oblivious as to what is going on with his oldest daughter.
"You ready?" Dad asked, finishing the last of his coffee. I nodded and stood up to put our empty plates in the sink. He stood up also and slipped his jacket on over his police uniform. While he was dressed for work, I was dressed for comfort.
I adjusted the tie on the waistband of my cropped grey sweats and slipped on my black hoodie over my tank top as I followed him out of the house. After he locked the door, we walked side by side to his police cruiser and quietly entered the surprisingly roomy car.
Car rides with Dad were my favorite. They were silent, which allowed me to be able to be consumed by my thoughts. The only noise in the car was the classic rock music that played softly in the background. Another reason why they were my favorite: the music. Dad and I had similar tastes in music. We both preferred the sounds of the guitars and the drums over some silly poppy beat that was in most music today.
"I love this song!" I squealed and turned the music louder as Bob Seger's Old Time Rock & Roll came on. Dad and I belted out the lyrics and had a mini father-daughter jam session as we rode to the hospital.
By the time we reached the hospital, our jam session had come to an end. We both exited the car with smiles on our faces as the lyrics were still fresh in our minds. We walked side by side into the hospital and I quickly went to find a place to sit in the waiting room while Dad went to sign me in.
"Bella said for you to answer your phone," Dad said as he sat beside me.
"I left it at home. The battery died because I forgot to charge it last night," I told him as I stared at the small tv mounted in the corner of the room on the ceiling. It was on a cartoon channel and Bugs Bunny was playing.
"Clarissa Swan." We both glanced up as we heard my name being called. I stood up and walked to the nurse as Dad followed behind me. It was a quiet walk, the only noise being heard was from my black converse and Dad's boots tapping against the floor. She stopped at a room and opened the door before ushering us in. "The doctor will be here in a moment." Dad and I nodded, both of us getting comfortable.
I slid my shoes off and piled my hair messily on top of my head and secured it with a hair tie before I sat beside Dad on one of the chairs.
"You do know that you can lay on that bed thing, right?" He chuckled as I snuggled into his side and rested my head on his shoulder.
"Yeah but you're warmer." I shrugged. He shook his head and we both sat there in silence while we waited for the doctor.
"Good morning." Carlisle greeted us as he walked into the room. I immediately perked up and gave him a smile, which he returned.
"Good morning." Dad bid him.
"So, how have you been feeling?" Carlisle asked me.
"Fine mostly." I smiled a little. "My headaches are starting to come back but I think it might be a side effect of the medicine."
"Could be but we'll check just to be sure." I nodded and he asked me more questions to which I answered as truthfully as I could. "Is the medicine still helping?"
"So far, yeah."
"Good." He nodded.
The rest of my doctor's appointment blurred by. He gave me another medicine to take for my headaches, told me to take it easy, and reassured Dad and me that my kidney transplant was still functioning perfectly. It wasn't until Dad left to go schedule the next appointment that I finally paid attention again.
"So, Clary." Carlisle smiled at me. "How are you doing?"
"Fine, I guess." I sighed. "He's more worried than I am. He's scared that the transplant will malfunction and then I'll have to go through it all over again."
"That's understandable. He's a father, it's natural for him to worry." He smiles softly at me. "So I hate to ask this now, but Esme was wondering when you will be coming by again?" He chuckled.
"Tomorrow probably. Jasper and I still need to finish our project." I smiled at him.
"I'll tell her." He stood up from the stool that he was sitting on. "Any special requests for dinner?"
"Well, I've had this big craving for Chinese lately." I joked.
"Noted." He chuckled again and walked over to the door. "Oh, Emmett told me to tell you that he says hi." We both laughed and he walked out of the room, Dad coming in after him.
"Ready to go?"
"Yeah." I slipped my shoes back on and we walked out of the hospital and over to the car.
"You're really okay, right?" Dad stared at me.
"I really am." I gave him a small smile. He seemed to accept my answer and started the engine. We didn't speak until we had reached the house and when we did only a few words were said. I bid him goodbye and we parted ways. Him to work and me to bed.
I slipped my shoes off and left them by the front door as I entered the house. The silence that spread throughout the house unnerved me and I bolted up the stairs and locked myself in my room. I breathed a sigh of relief and chuckled at my scaredy-cat ways. I discarded my hoodie and dove onto my bed, unplugging my phone from the charger.
"Hello?" I immediately answered my phone as it rang.
"Hey, babe," Emmett answered in his deep voice.
"Hey." I smiled though he couldn't see me.
"Open your window." After he said his request he hung up. I rose from my bed and walked to the window. I looked down and Emmett stood there with a giant smirk on his face as he looked back at me. I opened the window like he requested and moved back. Before I could blink, he was standing in front of me. "Hey."
"Hey." I smiled at him. I stood on my toes and kissed him softly as he picked me up and wrapped his arms around me. "Why aren't you at school?" I asked with a small smirk on my face.
"And miss being able to spend time with you?" He rose his eyebrows. "No way." He shook his head and moved us to the bed. He sat with his back against my headboard with me straddling him.
"You know I'm getting a sense of deja vu right now." I grinned at him and he chuckled as he moved his hands to my butt.
"Weird." He said as his large hands squeezed my butt before trailing upwards and grasping my hips.
"So weird." I agreed with him and placed a kiss on his jaw. "You do know that what happened last night is as far as we'll go right?" He looked at me confused. "I mean, we're not going to be having sex anytime soon."
"I know babe. Not until you're ready." He smiled at me in reassurance. "I'll wait forever if you want."
"Good." I sighed in relief. "We can still kiss and stuff but no actual sex, yet."
"Like I said, not until you're ready." He smiled but then it formed into a smirk. "But do you think we could probably kiss and stuff now?" he asked as he began to kiss my neck.
"Well, I don't see why not." I moaned and he flipped us over. "But," I flipped us back over catching him by surprise. "I'm on top," I whispered in his ear.
"Oh, God." He breathed out as I nibbled on his earlobe.
"Nope, just Clary." I teased and he laughed.
