It was sunny outside. That was the first thing I noticed when I woke up that morning. The sunlight boosted my mood, it made me feel giddy. But despite that, Bella's words from the night before still rang through my mind.
After I had gotten home from my date with Emmett, Bella rushed down from her room and dragged me up to it because she had something important to tell me. She slammed her door after we barged through it and sat me on her bed. She began to explain, while rambling, what she had learned from Jacob Black, our childhood friend.
She said that he told her some legend about "the cold ones" and "werewolves" and how their natural-born enemies. She then went on to explain about some treaty that separated their lands and the entire back story. But it wasn't until I had told her to stop rambling that she finally blurted the most important thing. "The Cullens are vampires." That's what she had learned.
Vampire.
That one word ran through my mind all night long.
As soon as she said it, all the dots connected. Emmett's cold skin, his speed that he used to save me during the accident, his odd-colored eyes, it all made sense with just one word. Vampire. I didn't know what to say to her so I hadn't said anything. I exited her room quietly, went into mine, changed into pajamas, and lay in bed. It was like I had gone into shock, my body and brain were just unresponsive.
I glanced back to the window and decided to get ready for the day we had planned. Dad, Bella, and I were going to a barbecue in LaPush. The three of us had been invited and I wasn't about to turn down the opportunity to see my second family. I dressed simply, seeing as how it was slightly warm outside. I wore a pair of jean shorts with an orange short-sleeved shirt with my black converse. My hair straightener and my make up done minimally like always. I exited my room and walked down the stairs and found Dad and Bella waiting for me in the living room.
I smiled and greeted both of them but I couldn't ignore the wary and suspicious looks Bella kept sending my way. The three of us walked out to the car in silence and made our way to LaPush. The car ride wasn't uncomfortable, the three of us chatted but there was still some tension - mainly between Bella and me. I knew she wanted to know how I felt about it everything, but I couldn't answer her questions if I didn't even know the answers myself.
As we pulled up to Billy's house, there was already a small crowd of people hanging around and talking. Most of them turned as they saw our car pull up but then they smiled when they saw who exited it.
"Clary!" I closed my door and turned around as I heard someone shout my name. My eyes stopped on Billy, who sat in his wheelchair with a giant smile on his face, arms spread open, and a cowboy hat perched on his head.
"Billy!" I shouted excitedly and raced over to him. I felt people watch as I ran to him but I ignored them and continued to race over to my godfather. I gently jumped onto his lap and wrapped my small arms around him as he embraced me. "I haven't seen you since Christmas, how've you been old man?" I teased him.
"Still dancing and doing wheelies." He grinned. "How about you little bug?" Billy started calling me little bug over the summer before my twelfth birthday. Jacob and I were rummaging through some boxes in their shed when I came across Rachel's old ballet costume. It was a little ref leotard covered in black polka dots and attached to it were black wings and a black tutu. I wore that costume every day, only taking it off when it had to be cleaned.
"Still causing mischief." I grinned back at him. He laughed. "Oh but guess what, I made the Forks High cheerleading team. And not to brag or anything but we won the first game of the season on Friday."
"Well then maybe you should come to cheer for the school here on the rez. Maybe then our team will win a game." He winked at me.
"I'll take it into consideration." I poked his cheek and stood up from his lap. "Oh, you remember Bella?" I gestured to my awkward sister who glued herself to Dad's side. "Excuse her, she's shy." I leaned down and whispered to him. He laughed and yanked on a strand of my hair which made me yelp. He smiled and struck up a conversation with her while I glanced around. I smiled kindly at anybody I made eye contact with but it wasn't until I saw the person I wanted to see that I squealed happily.
"Sammy!" I shouted. The tall man made of muscle and teddy bear fluff turned in my direction and smiled widely at me. He spread his arms open and beckoned me over. I giggled and raced over to him. I launched into his open arms and hugged him tightly. "How's it going, big bro?"
"Clare-Bear, I heard you moved back." He smiled at me.
"Yupp, and I'm staying until graduation." I poked his cheek. "You're gonna be stuck with me for three years!"
"Oh no." He sighed dramatically. He unwrapped his arms from around me which made me squeal and hold onto him tighter. "Three years of Clary Swan, how will I survive?"
"Oh please, you love me." I smiled innocently and poked his cheek. "And besides, I didn't move back to see your ugly face anyways." I scoffed and turned to the pretty lady beside him. "Hi, Emily." I winked at her and wiggled my fingers as I waved.
"Hello, Clary." She winked back with a smile on her face.
I gasped and sighed happily as I placed a hand over my heart. I felt Sam chuckle at my antics as he set me back on my feet. "The pretty lady likes me more than you." I teased Sam and poked his chest.
"Yeah, that's why the pretty lady is engaged to me." He said sarcastically. He wrapped an arm around Emily's waist and pulled her into his side.
"Sam, did you just use sarcasm?" I gasped dramatically. I turned to Emily and hugged her as I fake cried. "They grow up so fast. One second they're silent, and the next they're sassy." I wept.
"Ha ha, you're so hilarious Clare-Bear." Sam rolled his eyes.
"Thanks, I try." I smiled and stepped away from Emily. Throughout my reunion with Sam and Emily, I had failed to notice Paul and Jared standing there beside them. "Well if it isn't Paulie and Jerry," I smirked.
"Clary." They both smirked. I walked over to both of them and the three of us embraced in a group hug, with me squished in between.
"Boys, can't breathe." I gasped out as they laughed and hugged me tighter. After another second, they finally let go. "Phew, thank goodness. I'm too pretty to die guys." I ran my hand through my hair and patted it down from when they ruffled it. Jared smirks and opens his mouth to say something but I place my hand over it and shush him. "Do you guys smell that?" I sniffed the air. I felt Jared tense and out of the corner of my eye, I saw Sam and Paul do the same. "It smells like," I trailed off. I sniffed through the air again and turned my head in Paul's direction. I sniffed around him before backing away in disgust.
"Ew, Paul that smell's coming from you." I waved my hand in front of my nose. "You know there's this thing called deodorant, you should try it sometime." Jared burst into laughter as I said that. He bent over and clutched his stomach as he just stood there laughing. Paul glared at him and smacked the back of his head. He yelped but continued to laugh.
"Oh man, Clary I missed you." Jared finally composed himself. Paul glared at him again but didn't say anything.
"Clary!" I turned around at the sound of my name and Jacob waving at me.
"Gotta go see more people guys." I smiled at them and gave them all another hug. I waved and bid them goodbye before I walked toward Jacob.
"Shortie." He grinned at me. I hugged him and laughed as he picked me up off of the ground and spun me around. "Why have you come to see me yet?" He asked as he set me down, his arms still around me.
"I've been busy with school and cheer practice, Jake," I explained my absence.
"No way, you're a cheerleader?" His eyes widened. I nodded and chuckled at his reaction. "Oh don't tell me that you have a boyfriend now too." He groaned.
"No Jake, no boyfriend." I shook my head but then I thought of Emmett. No boyfriend, yet.
"Good, you're too young to be dating." He clarified.
"Agreed." I turned and saw Quil and Embry standing with their arms crossed over their chests.
"Guys, I'm older than all three of you." I rolled my eyes.
"Yeah but only by a month. And besides, we're all in the same grade." I shook my head at the point Quil was trying to make.
"Whatever helps you sleep at night guys." I waved them away with a smile.
"Thoughts of you help me sleep at night Clary." Quil tried to flirt. I tried so hard not to laugh, but I couldn't hold it in.
"You need to work more on your skills." I laughed. He frowned and punched Embry's arm, who also laughed at his attempts to be smooth.
"Oh please, as you could do any better." He smirked smugly. I looked at Jake, who winked at me and nodded once, before walking to Quil.
"Of course, I could." I laughed. He just shook his head and they made their way to the food table. I made me to where Bella was sitting beside Dad and munching quietly on a hamburger.
"You seem like you're having fun." She whispered to me as I sat down on the log beside her.
"I've known them all for years, it wouldn't kill you to try to talk to them too." I playfully nudged her. She shook her head shyly and just looked down at her plate. "Oh hey," she picked her head back up. "Jessica, Angela, and I are going to Port Angeles after school on Monday, do you wanna come with us?"
"Sure but why are y'all going?" I asked her as I grabbed a French fry from her plate.
"Dress shopping." As soon as those words came out of her mouth, I let out a gasp. It was a rather loud gasp because all the conversations people were having stopped. "Oh no." Bella frowned as she realized what she had just said. It was still eerily quiet as everyone was waiting to see what was happening.
"Dad!" I turned in my seat and looked at Dad with the biggest smile on my face. "Bella said she's going dress shopping!" I squealed. He dropped his hamburger in shock as he gaped at her.
"Oh no, now there's two of you." He finally said. I heard chuckles erupt from everyone but I gasped and stood up from my seat.
"And what is that supposed to mean?" I put my hands on my hips and glared at him. He turned to face me with a sheepish smile on his face.
"That now I'll have to fight with both of you for the bathroom in the morning." He admitted.
"I do not take a long time in the bathroom." I protested. "Besides you wake up an hour earlier than us, you have all that time to use but you don't." I stuck my tongue out at him.
"Whatever you say, dear." He nods and picks up his hamburger again. I glare at him again before scooting away. "Oh, are you mad at me now?"
"Yes," I answered simply and took Bella's drink.
"Would it help if I apologized?"
"No."
