it had been a rainy, cloudy sunday afternoon. how ironic. how cliche.
maia couldn't cry. she had cried all day, yesterday, the last weeks. and now there were no tears left for her to give.
her friends stood besides her, they had all come. roxanne and clementine stood directly next to her, the two girls had made it their job to look after maia. and for that she was grateful.
it started to rain again, but maia didn't care. she just looked at the ground, where minutes before a casket had been lowered into the ground and now was buried with dirt. she couldn't, she didn't want to believe, that the love of her life was gone.
clem grabbed her shoulder, and maia realised that the people around her were on their ways back to the cars. "I will be there in a minute.", maia said, trying to smile. clem just nodded, smiled at her and then grabbed roxi's hand.

then she was alone.
alone with the grave, alone with her grief.
and maia cried.
"why, why did you have to leave? you told me it wouldn't be a dangerous mission. you promised me.", maia didn't blame noah, how could he have known, that the mission wouldn't go as expected. that was a possibility in their field. but they had made it all this way and both had decided, it was time to leave the active part of taskforce 141, marry, start a family.
they had planned to still work in 141, but in the background, strategies, overwatch.
maia hadn't planned to bury someone she loved again so early. pim had come back, he was in her life again, but she knew that noah wouldn't do the same.
he was gone. one second they were falling, falling in love. the next, he had fallen, killed in combat.
and maia was alone.
"it wasn't supposed to be you. why couldn't it have been me? you deserved so much more, noah van amersvoort. I love you, I forever will."

the group had driven back to the house maia and noah had bought. before it had been their dream house. but right now it just felt empty and sad. her boys, ghost, soap and gaz, had decided to move in with her for the time, so maia wouldn't be alone in these grieving times.
walking to the door, maia looked at the bell sign. "van amersvoort.", it read. maia slightly smiled. they had decided to marry before he went on his last mission. they both knew they didn't want a big wedding, just a small wedding, with john price holding the ceremony.
it had been one of the happiest moments in their life. noah had decided to take maia's last name as he had nothing that he would miss about it.
she remembered it so clearly. price saying: "I now pronounce you husband and wife. noah, you can kiss maia now.", and he did. maia had smiled, cried happy tears. it had been perfect.
and now all of that had changed. maia was alone. not completely, but she had lost a part of her heart, her soul. noah had taken them with him.
her father floris and brother pim, or alex, stepped up and stood beside her. "hey puntjes. we zijn er voor je, oké?" (hey little dot, we are here for you, okay?) maia just nodded and opened the door.

"he deserved so much more. he should be here, not in the ground. he was perfect. perfect for me.", the group of friends sat in the living room, distributed on the sofa, armchairs and the ground. maia had offered to get more chairs, but ghost and soap had been stubborn and now sat, leaning on the couch, in front of maia.
they had started to share memories, hold little speeches and just talk.
"noah was special. he was kind, not always perfect but he tried. he finally had everything he deserved, a family and friends that loved, love him. he was a friend you could be glad to have by your side. you two might not always have had the perfect relationship, but you found each other. because you are soulmates.", clementine said.
"you could always count on him having your back. he was a good comrade. he will be missed.", spoke price. he had been all in when maia had asked if he could let noah join taskforce 141.

two months later simon noah and riley pim van amersvoort were born. they had known that it would be twins and that they would name them after their friends, with simon and her brother being the first one.
they had said, that their next children would be named after their other friends, but fate had a different way in mind and now noah was gone. so maia decided to give her son the name of the man she had loved the most as a second name.
holding her children for the first time, maia cried. it was a mix of happy tears but also because of the fact, that noah would never be able to see his children grow, that they would never meet their father.
but maia also knew, that she wasn't alone. her friends, her family was with her and would help her in every way they could. and for that, maia was eternally thankful.

two years later, maia had adopted two more kids, naming them kyle and joanna kate. she loved seeing her children grow. riley looked so much like noah, simon came after her.
the kids loved hearing stories of her and their fathers "adventures" and maia loved telling them, remembering what she had experienced with noah.
maia visited noah's grave a lot, either with their kids or alone. then she just sat there, telling him about the kids, what mischief they had been up to lately, their birthdays, their first days in school.
every time she sat there and watched the sky, she remembered noah saying "if I die, you will find me in the clouds. just look up.", and maia did. there were small clouds, big clouds, sometimes no clouds at all, but maia always found noah somewhere around her.
"riley looks so much like you, it's unbelievable.", maia smiled. she had never really had the chance to know what it would be like to grow up with brothers as her own had "died" when she had been barely ten. but now her kids had the chance to experience the life maia never had. "they miss you. simon and jo want to know everything about you, you are their hero. riley adores ghost and kyle has such a good connection with clem and roxi, he loves them a lot.", a tear of happiness escaped her eyes and dropped down into the grass in front of her.
where before a hill of dirt had been, maia and the kids had worked on planting flowers and now it was mix of colours and different kinds of flowers.
on the gravestone, a simple one, it read: "noah van amersvoort. father, son and husband. you will be missed eternally."
