Y/N's POV
The past few days were better, Bruce explained that the pawn maybe flew by the impact of Vincent's hand when he slammed the table, wich for you seemed impossible, but more reasonable then you making a chess piece levitate. But he didn't explain about the foreign languages you could understand.
You came back home but didn't say what happened to Sarah or Manuel, they didn't ask about Vincent, since they never met him, you didn't make an effort to introduce him since your relationship was just casual.
Wanda didn't ask much, she knew that you were still surprised by the death of that man in front of you, she just continued with a smile on her face pretending that nothing had happened, and it was actually good, it made you forget it better.
Bucky didn't care about Vincent at all, after you started talking with the others he came and gave you a big hug, almost not letting you go, worried if the Hydra's agent has done something with you, as you explained a thousend times he stopped asking, just saying that you should take care of yourself. You felt glad for it, Bucky was a wonderful person.
Tony wasn't cold with you anymore, maybe after the incident he noticed he was being kind of a jerk and weng back to the normal rotine, making fun of you and the others, trusting you with tasks etc. He also let you work back with the Avengers, he said that keeping you away just caused more problems anyway, so it was better for you to stay close where he could watch you.
The pain and amusement from before passed with the days, you started to sleep again and don't worry about Bydra attacking again.
And it's right to say that Steve played a huge part in that.
You and him were together all the time, he always caring about you, asking if you had eaten and sleeping well, as you would answer a "yes grandpa" annoying him.
Training got back, Natasha always there, and you observed that she was more caring, attentive, not yelling as before. Well, she still was hard, but that was already progress.
You were fighting really well, Peter one day entered with Tony and couldn't stop talking about how cool were your movements, almost begging you to teach him how to do that even, even though you had no idea. Tont wouldn't compliment directly, just said that it was not bad, while Natasha would say that you could do better. Steve would on the other hand say that you were lucky, yes, win 3 rounds one after another was being lucky or that he took it easy.
Fighting with him was...Interesting, you didn't know why but everytime your skin touched his you felt chills, your heart raced as you could feel sometimes his breath in your neck, and you almost fell when he smirked and winked in your direction when you successfully hit him.
He sometimes would come back from training to your house as Manuel made an incredible white, blue and red dessert and asked Steve his opinion.
-Wow...It looks like the american flag...-He said impressed staring to his cupcake.
-That was the intention.-Manuel said happy- Please eat.
Steve shy took a bite, making his face dirty with cream, you giggled and grabbed your phone fastly to take a picture.
-What? What are you doing?-He said after you took the photo- Oh no, I look terrible stop-He laughed as you standed your arms far and he almost hugged you to reach it.
-But it's so cute haha- You said.
-Oh really?-He grabbed the cupcake and made your face dirty with cream too- Perfect, we're both cute now.
He grabbed his phone, and, with some difficulty took a picture of you.
-Uh...-Manuel said and you both realized he was still there.- Should I bring another one?
-Oops sorry.-You saud cleaning your face- But it was delicious.
You and Steve exchanged shy smiles and Manuek continued there without really knowing what to do.
You didn't know yet the reason Steve ignored you after Sharon left, you wanted to know at first, but now that didn't seem important anymore. Having him there was better.
Even though you wished he would be more open about his feelings.
One day Sam was training with Steve as you were sweeping the floor and was teasing him.
-Steve, Steve- Sam started- You want to take your shirt?
-What?-Steve gasped.
-You are sweating, oh don't need to be shy, you are Steve Rogers, everybody wants to see you shirtless.
-Stop saying nonsense.
-It's true, hey Y/N, don't you want to see Steve shirtless?
You felt your whole face red, what possibly could you say? Steve had indeed a Greek God's body...Oh my ehat were you thinking? No. No.
-N-No.-You stuttered and fastly turned back to broom.
-That's harsh-Sam teased again- You are going to break his heart like that.
-Break his heart?-You asked.
-Sam shut up-Steve said annoyed.
-What? Isn't she your crush?
You lost balance. Crush? He woman Sharon mentioned he loved...Was you? But Steve was your friend...No, that couldn't be possible. Your breath got irregular as your heart beated wighout rest inside your chest. Just answer Steve. Please answer "No". Just say it.
-No.-He said and you holded a relieved sigh- I think it's enough for today-He said grabbing his water bottle and leaving.
-What? Hey Steve, come on bro.-Sam shouted but his friend didn't turn.- Was it that bad?
You prefered to don't comment about it.
-Damn.
You finished sweeping the floor fastly and looked for Steve.
You never liked people who gossiped or wanted to know about other people's lives, but you felt like you needed to know about that girl.
Who could she be? How she was? Why he never talked about her? Was she married? Or his feelings weren't reciprocals? Could someone really reject Steve? I mean, he was kind, funny (in his own way), exceptionally handsome, a true hero, caring, devoted and the list goes on.
Why did you think of so many qualities? That was kind of embarrassing. Mental note to never say that out loud to anyone.
You found him outside, in a part full of trees, he was there sitting on a bench, his sight lost in the horizont of buildings.
-Hey.-You said and sat next to him without asking for permission. -You know Sam was joking right?
-Uh? Yeah...Yeah I know.-He said still looking at the concrete city.
-What? Would it be so bad for you to have a crush on me?-You joked chuckling.
He stared at you fastly, like nervous then at the city again. Wow did that offend him? Was it really that bad.
-Oh..Alright...I was joking...No need to be cruel like that...
-What? No, no of course not. That wasn't my intention.-He quickly apoligized.
-It's okay...-You said- So you have a crush on someone else...Who is it?
He lifted his eyebrows surprised.
-What? I'm your friend. Can't you tell me?
-It's just...private.
-You said no secrets between us Rogers.-You teased.
He chuckled and sighed.
-Ok...Promise to don't laugh?
You felt anxious.
-Promise.
-I just loved one woman my whole life. And it's still the same one.
-That's not something to laugh. That's actually beautiful.
-You think so?
-Sure.
-Even though she's already dead?
-Wait what?- You asked and he gave a bittersweet smile.
-Remember the person I said you reminded me? That one from the 40s? It's her.
-Oh...
-Yeah...Her name is Peggy Carter.
-Carter?-You started thinking- Wait Carter isn't it--
-Sharon's last name? Yeah, she's her niece.
You felt your haw dropping and Steve laughed at you.
-You dated her niece what?
-I know. I loved Peggy, I still do, but I was frozen and she stayed there, lived her life. I woke up in a present she had nephews, sons and grandsons, a whole family. The last time I saw her she died, she was already of age.
-I'm sorry.
-It's fine...-He took a deep breath.- I never met someone like her. Sharon had a side of her, maybe because they're from the same family, we had a case but nothing else. I never forgot Peggy.
-It's not something to be ashamed of. You love her. That's it.
-Thanks, but not everybody understand loving one person your whole life.
-She must've been amazing.
Pompeii Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox cover (video in the beggining of the chapter)
-She was.-He smiled nostalgic.- If I close my eyes I can remember everything. Her laugh, her sweet smile, her fierce attitude.
-I bet she was a strong woman.
-Definetly. She was just one of a kind. An impressive woman during the war, determined to bring justice and peace to people, did you know that she founded S.H.I.E.L.D?
-Did she?
-Yes. Well after I died, I discovered it after I woke up... I was very proud, still am, of the woman she turned. She never needed anyone to do what she felt was right.
-You must miss her a lot.
-Everyday. I still remember the exact moment when my plane crashed into the ice. I promised her a last dance.
-Steve Rogers dancing? By his own will?
-Yes, just Peggy...And you, to make me dance-He laughed.- Never got to did what I promised.
-...But...You said she married...She lived happy...Right?
-You're right. And I'm glad for that. I wouldn't want her to wait for me.
-And would she want you to wait?
He turned to you, his face astonished by your question. Did you say something wrong?
-Sorry I--
-No. You're actually right.-He said- She wouldn't...I just...don't know if I can...
He got something from his pocket. A compass. You knee he had one, but never saw it closely. It was an old one, but carefully kept all those years. He opened and, inside, there was a photo of a woman, a brunette, with a sweet smile and gentle but fierce eyes. That must be Peggy Carter. The woman Steve deeply loved.
-Wait.-You said leaving fastly to a vendi g machine then getting back with two cans of coke, giving one to him - Sorry didn't have champagne or anything better.
He just nodded still confused of what you were gonna do.
You opened the can and held high in the sky.
-Cheers to Miss Carter. I hope she's well in the sky, and I've go to say, I'd love to have met her.
Steve was smiling, you notice his eyes glowing, tears making a crystalline barrier in them. Steve held his coke high too.
-Cheers to you Peggy. Thank you. Thanks fro being you, for the lives you transformed, including mine. You made me a better man.
You quickly touched both cans and drank.
-I hope she's proud of me tok.-He said quietly.
-I'm sure she is.-You put a hand on his shoulder.
-Thanks Y/N...
And you stayed there, looking at the sky turning darker drinking Coca Cola.
"Peggy Carter..." you thought inside your mind "thanks for making Steve happy, thanks for making him feel loved"
