"Okay Mrs Brooke, I'm going to need you to breathe and on the count of three, you're gonna do one big push, ready?"

Michael Brooke, outside his wife's hospital room, couldn't stop pacing but not for the reasons that you might think.

"Okay, give one last big push."

From outside the hospital room, you could hear Michael's wife, Penelope Brooke, screaming in agony but not because she has injured herself, no, it's because she is giving birth to Michael and Penelope's child.

"I promise Mrs Brooke that this will be worth it in the end."Β

Inside the room, lay a sweat-soaked and heavy breathing woman, otherwise known as the pureblood witch, Penelope Brooke.

Squinting her eyes shut and giving one last scream in agony, the pure-blood witch gives one last push and not a second later a newborns cry breaks out in the room.

The nurse who delivered the baby gives Penelope a warm smile before whisking the baby away to clean it up.

The midwife who was standing beside Penelope opens the delivery room's door and smiles politely at Michael.

"Your wife is ready for you to see her, sir."

Michael doesn't even give the midwife a second glance as he steps into the room and stalks to his wife's bedside.

The nurse who's cleaning the newborn baby up returns with a smile on her face and gives the baby to the new mother.

Penelope smiles down at her newborn child with adoration and love in her eyes.

"My sweet child, you're so beautiful."

Penelope then looks back at the nurse.
"What is the gender of our child?" The delivery nurse smiles at the first time mother before answering her question.

"It brings me joy to say that you, Mrs Brooke, have given birth to a healthy baby girl."

Penelope smiles with delight and looks back down at her newborn daughter and gasps as her daughters baby blue eyes are already staring into her chocolate brown ones.

The nurse smiles at the interaction before clearing her throat and taking a step toward the mother with her arms out.

"If I may, we have to take your child for a routine check-up with the matron but we'll have her back safely as soon as the check-up is done but, before I go, I must ask, what is the name you have chosen for your daughter?"

Penelope nods her head and gives the baby to the nurse before thinking deeply about what her daughter's name will be.

As the nurse secures the newly born girl in her arms, Penelope looks up and locks eyes with the worker.

"Her name will be Nellie, Nellie Brooke"

The nurse smiles and congratulates Penelope, saying that the name is perfect before looking at the father of the child. The nurse frowns when she sees that Michael doesn't have a look of joy on his face but instead has a look of disdain.

The nurse shakes the look off and exits the hospital room to start the routine check up on the newborn baby as Penelope lays back into the hospital bed, starting to feel the toll of giving birth start to take effect on her energy.

β€”

Back in the hospital room, Michael smirks as he looks around and sees that he is alone with his wife.

Slowly, he creeps towards where his wife lay as she drifts in and out of sleep. He gently brushes the hair from her face whilst whispering her name to wake her up.

"Penelope, wake up my love."

His wife's breathing starts to become uneven and it isn't long until her brown chocolate eyes open.

Penelope awakes with a gasp due to how close her husband is to her face.

"Oh, Michael do you have to wake me? I was getting rest. Giving birth to our daughter was ever so tiring."

Michael hums in response to what his wife just said and puts his hands behind her back to help her sit up.

"Yes dear, I know but I thought you'd like to be awake when I tell you the news."

Penelope raises an eyebrow at her husband. "What news? Is it our daughter? Is she okay?"

Michael hushes his wife. "Penelope, she's fine. No need to get all in a huff." Mrs Brooke gives a sigh of relief before looking back to her husband.

"Then what is this news that you wish to tell me?"

Michael smirks at his wife and he draws his wand from his sleeve.

"Now, my love, I believe you haven't been honest with me and we both know what happens when you lie to me."

Penelope holds back the lump in her throat but Michael can see a glimmer of fear flash in her eyes that makes him smirk.

"I don't know what you're talking about Michael but the nurse will be back with our daughter any minute."

Mr Brooke's eyes harden as he looks down at his wife as she lays helplessly on her hospital bed.

"You think I want anything to do with that bastard child after what I've just found out?"

Penelope's hairs on her skin start to stand up straight as if they were soldiers standing to attention.

"I have no clue what you're talking about, Michael."

"I overheard you one night, talking to that thing whilst it was still growing inside you. I heard you say how once it was born that you were both going to go away somewhere, somewhere I couldn't find you. You were going to run away to a muggle mans house and leave me alone, well not anymore Penelope. You can't run to your muggle man because I killed him, right where he stood. I overheard you say that you were in love with him. Is that true?"

Penelope, with tears of fear running down her face, nods her head causing Michael's eyes to become full of rage.

"Our marriage and our vows meant nothing to you?! You selfish little Brat. I gave you everything you asked for, I gave you a child and this is how you pay me in return?!"

Penelope cries out in pain as she clutches her burning red cheek in her hand, the cheek that her husband had just slapped.

"We're abandoning that little twerp and you won't ever see her again."

Before Penelope can protest against her husband's wishes, Michael pins her to the bed with his left hand as his right-hand holds his wand.

"Imperious"

After the spell is said from his lips, his wand emits a green light that flows into Penelope's eyes.

Michaels wife immediately calms down and the tears disappear from her eyes as if they weren't there.

β€”

The nurse smiles at the newly born girl in her arms as she makes her way back to the hospital room where the baby's parents are.

The nurse opens the hospital room door with a wistful look on her face.

"Here you are Mr and Mrs Brooke, your baby girl is perfectly healthy."

The nurse walks over to Penelope's bedside and holds Nellie out to her mother.

The nurse's eyes widen when the woman turns her head away from the baby, not sparing the newborn a second glance.

The nurse's shocked gaze looks up at Michael who has a look of 'sorrow' on his face.

"I'm so sorry to have to tell you this but as you were given the baby a routine check-up, my wife and I spoke and we decided that we don't want the baby."

The nurse looks at him, shocked but doesn't question it since the Brooke's are pureblood which means that they are her superiors.

The nurse looks towards Mrs Brooke, expecting her to say this is a joke but Penelope doesn't say anything and just looks at the baby with a look of hatred.

The nurse glances between Mr and Mrs Brooke before bowing her head and leaving the room with the baby girl still in her arms.

As the nurse is walking she sees matron up ahead and rushes to catch up with her.

"Matron, we have a problem."

Matron turns and looks at the nurse before noticing the baby that she is holding.

"Nurse Smith, whatever is the problem?"

The nurse then goes on to explain how the Brooke family no longer want their child.

The matron looks at the baby that still lay in the nurse's arms, with a look of shock on her face.

"We can't leave the poor dear abandoned, Matron. What do we do?"

The matron puts her hands on the young nurse's shoulders to console her.

"Take deep breaths, Ethel, I have a plan. I'll write a letter explaining our predicament whilst you wrap the baby up in blankets and fetch a basket that we can lay the child in."

The Matron looks at the Nurse. "Do you happen to know the name of the child?"

Nurse Smith nods her head. "Nellie is what the mother decided to call the child."

The matron nods her head before scurrying off.

The nurse gives the matron a peculiar look but doesn't question it and does as her boss says.

β€”

An hour later and everything is set in motion, Nellie, who is wrapped up in blankets is laid into the wicker basket as matron hands Nurse Smith the letter.

"You must leave this child on the doorstep of the first house that you see. Make sure that the letter is left with the child."Β

Nurse Smith, looks up at the matron. "We plan to leave the Brooke child on someone's doorstep?"

Matron nods her head. "That's exactly what we're going to do Ethel, it's the only option there is."

The nurse nods her head and gathers her belongings before gently picking up the basket and exiting the hospital.

β€”

After 45 minutes of walking in the cold, Nurse Smith comes across the first house that she has seen for miles and quickens her walk.

She sighs a sorrowful sigh as she places the basket down on the doorstep. She smiles gently at the baby girl that lay asleep in the basket, unaware to what's happening around her.

The nurse then looks down at the letter in her hands that read...

Dear sir/ma'am

I'm sorry to bother you, so late into the night but it's so very important.

We're a nearby hospital who looked after the woman who gave birth to this child but under unknown circumstances, the woman who bore this child has now abandoned her.

I hope you can find it in your heart to take this child in and look after her as if she was your own.

The child's name is Nellie Brooke and we hope that you can give her a life full of love and happiness.

Yours sincerely,
Matron June Wilson

Nurse Smith, nods her head at the letter before folding it and placing it neatly and gently on the baby's chest.

The nurse takes a few deep breaths before knocking on the door of the house and walking away into the shadows.

The nurse watches in the shadows as the door to the house opens and a woman who looks to be in her late 40s-early 50s steps out of the house and gasps at the sight of a baby on her doorstep.

Nurse Smith watches as the woman picks up the letter and gives it a quick read through before picking up the basket and taking the baby inside, in the warmth.

Nurse Ethel Smith, smiles and walks away from the house and back towards the hospital but not before looking back once more at the house that will now be the place that Nellie grows up in.
