It's silent as everyone takes their seats in the same church they put Sheriff Forbes to rest in all those years ago.
"Um... we are here today to celebrate the life of Camilla Forbes." Caroline attempts to say strongly with a small smile but her eyes slowly drift towards the closed coffin and she almost loses her composure.
Keeping her eyes on the coffin she spaces out for a moment as everyone's eyes are on her. Damon begins to stand up but Elena puts her hand on his arm stopping him and shakes her head, signaling for her to let her do what she needed to do.
"My um, my sister was the light of my life when everything felt so dark. She was the light in everyone's life." She whispers with her big eyes still on Camillas golden crested coffin. "She was always there for me even if she felt as if she was going to completely break down. She didn't deserve this, but I know her. She would sacrifice everything for those she loves, and she did. She was the strong one out of us both."
Slowly Walking over to the coffin Caroline softly places her hand over the top. Closing her eyes a tear rolls down her cheek as she whispers. "Please give me strength."
Walking back towards her seat near a sobbing Lizzie she grabs the other blondes hand squeezing it in comfort.
Kol Mikaelson slowly gets up and walks towards the podium with a deep frown.
Clearing his scratchy throat he begins. "I could've sworn this is the third time you've made me say goodbye darling." He chuckles humorously.
Rebekah sniffles but puts on a small smile at her younger brothers attempt at not breaking down.
"But this time seems more real than the rest have." He says seriously, staring at the large picture of Camilla next to her coffin. "It feels like you thought it was okay to leave all of us behind, in this very shitty world." He spits out.
Rebekah eyes widen as she notices his temper rising and fast. Making eye contact with Elijah they both slowly start standing up.
Kol suddenly feels really hot and rips his tie off throwing it on the floor. "How could you! You left your kids here! You left me here! All alone again! Like you promised you never would!" He screams staring at the picture as if he was actually talking to her.
The two Mikaelson siblings speed towards him as they see him prepare to launch at the picture. Grabbing him by his arms he struggles as he starts sobbing and attempting to push his siblings off.
Davina stands and begins walking towards them but Kol's shouts quickly put her steps to a stop.
"GET OFF OF ME! DONT TOUCH ME!STAY AWAY FROM ME!" He screams and pushes Rebekah to the ground and kicks Elijah into the chairs.
Caroline squeezes her eyes shut as the tears come pouring down while squeezing lizzy into her side. Camilla wasn't just Kol's bestfriend she was the sister he never had the chance of having. He was heart broken. And he may never heal. She knew that too well.
Walking out of the church he slams the doors open and within seconds is out of sight of anyone within the church.
After helping Rebekah up Elijah dusts off his suit and turns towards everyone. "I'm sorry...I don't know what to say." His brows furrow in sadness.
It's silent for a moment until surprisingly Stefan speaks. "It's okay. He's grieving. She was important to him."
Walking up to the stand Stefan stares at the same picture Kol did. "When you came into my life I didn't do a double take, I didn't see a whole life with you flash before my eyes. I saw someone who yelled at me for blowing off her sister so rudely." He says with a small smile.
Elena, Caroline, and Bonnie all stare at the wall ahead of them as if they were picturing the same exact memory.
Closing his eyes and taking a deep breath he slowly flutters his eyes open again but this time he saw Camilla standing in the back of the church with a smile. He knew it wasn't real. But it felt like it was her soul saying goodbye to him.
Continuing to stare at the figure he stutters out. " You had just given birth to Jace a couple months prior and I had just gotten my heart broken. I came down from my room to see you sitting on the couch with a bottle of bourbon staring into the fire like you were hoping it would swallow you whole."
Klaus' eyes widen at the mass amount of emotions hitting him all over again as he stares at the ground. Hope notices her fathers eyes begin to redden and it crushes her heart.
"I had sat next to you in silence and you offered me the bottle. I asked what was wrong and you just replied with nothings going wrong but it doesn't feel right."
Flash back
"What do you mean?" Stefan asks with confused eyebrows. Staring at the side of the blonds face as she continues to stare at the fire numbly.
" It has been months. And I still feel like it was yesterday when he left. When he left me. But now I have a son. Jace, he's perfect. He's everything I could've ever dreamed of. When he was born it was one of the most life changing moments that I will never forget." She finishes with a small smile, then continues to take another chug out of the bottle.
"What were the other life changing moments?" He asks curiously. Trying to get his mind off of his own heart break.
Her face quickly turns solemn again as she speaks. "There is a moment when everything in my life turned upside down. My nightmares were while I was awake and my present suddenly became my past. No matter how hard I tried to hold onto it."
"When was this moment for you?" He asks with furrowed brows focusing intensely on her.
"That moment is not only mine Stefan. This moment is your reality right now. Because it's when you realize somewhere deep inside of you that you're watching your everything burn into ash. Into nothing." She whispers.
"Does it ever stop hurting?" He says back, genuinely wanting an answer.
With a small sad smile Camilla replies. "The reality is that you will grieve it for the rest of your life. You won't get over it. You learn to live with it. You will heal and then rebuild yourself from the ground up around what destroyed you. You'll be whole again, but you'll never be the same."
Flash back over.
When he finishes the story Camilla suddenly begins walking out of the church, only turning back to give him one last smile and then disappearing.
Klaus has tears freely flowing down his face as Rebekah grabs his hand with tears going down her face.
Jace has a smile on his face with tears flowing down his cheeks as he listened to Stefan talk about his mother so fondly.
"Camilla was the greatest person I ever had the chance of knowing. I hope that one day when I pass she'll be there waiting for me." He whispers.
Walking towards the coffins he slowly bends down and kisses the top of the coffin with tears falling all over it.
Damon walks up to the stand looking around at all of the people who have become his family, all because of one woman.
"It seems like it was just yesterday I was standing up here saying goodbye to Liz Forbes." He says, watching Caroline squeeze her eyes shut painfully. The memory of her mothers death still painful.
"And now I'm saying goodbye to her daughter. My best friend." His voice goes into a whisper. "I will never be able to thank her enough for all the times she saved my ass or stopped me from making a bad decision. My life would be a complete 360 right now if this woman never came into my life. More like crashed into my life, I wasn't prepared for her to come because she challenged me. She challenged me to be a better person when no one else believed in me. And I'm sure as hell not prepared to see her leave my life."
Walking towards the closed coffin Damon gently pats the top with a small smile.
Walking up next is Alaric. He stares at all of his and Camillas children for a second. Watching as they all stare up at him with big eyes expecting him to make everything okay, but it'll never be okay.
"Camilla Forbes... where do I start? Mother of my children, an amazing friend, shoulder to cry on, and the only reason I got through these 17 years." He states. "If I'm being honest I never knew what the hell I was doing when it came to raising 4 kids let alone a whole school of them. But it was like it came naturally to her. She was always 10 steps ahead of me. In life and... in death." He whispers.
As Alaric goes back to his seat Jeremy Gilbert walks towards the podium. "I haven't been in this town in years. I left because all that surrounded it was death and supernatural drama. I intended to leave everything behind, all the pain and loss, all the people." He bluntly states.
The kids look at him confused, having only ever seeing him from pictures. Elena looks down at her hands.
"But something just wouldn't let me completely let go. And that was Cami. No matter how many times I changed my number she'd find it. No matter how many countries I traveled to she found me." He let's out a sad chuckle.
"Work trips my ass." Alaric whispers with a smile, of course thats what she was actually doing every time she claimed she had a work trip but would never tell him where.
Everyone smiles fondly as they all silently agree that, that was definitely something Camilla would do.
"When I was first introduced to the supernatural world I was so scared and alone. But she was there to help me through it all. She was the older sister I never thought I needed." He says with a numb face. Looking towards all of her kids he lets out a soft smile. "She loved you all so much. Believe that somewhere beyond here she is still watching over you. Not even the devil himself could have stopped her from being with you guys. And he tried believe me." He scoffs as the kids all let out a small chuckle for the first time since her death. "Never doubt her love for you. You were all she ever talked about." Pausing for a moment he glances towards her picture whispering, "Goodbye Cami."
"Do you guys wanna say something?" Caroline whispers to the kids.
They all shake their heads knowing that if they did it would end in never ending tears. And that it would make this just that much more real.
"Okay." Caroline whispers.
As they all get up and head out to the cars for the burial, one person stays behind staring at the coffin.
"Niklaus?" Elijah questions sadly.
"I need one last moment Lijah." He whispers with out moving his head.
Elijah puts a hand on his shoulder in comfort and looks towards what his brother had moved his head towards.
There on an easel was a large photo collage. But two pictures in particular caught both of their attention, more so Klaus but Elijah too stared at it for a moment.
Sitting in the old Mikaelson home when it was freshly made sat Camilla on Klaus' lap sticking her tongue out at him as he smiled at her. His eyes filled with love and adoration. Her eyes filled with playfulness and love.
Just above the picture was another one with all the Mikaelsons and Camilla. She was scolding Klaus for not smiling as all of his siblings laugh at them. They all looked genuinely happy.
Caroline walks into the church, her heels making noise every step she takes but neither of them seem to notice.
Stopping a few feet away from them she takes a moment to analyze the situation. Seeing where they were looking she smiles softly.
"She loved you, you know?" Caroline interrupts the brothers reminiscing. "Everyone likes to compare Stefan and Elena to you and her but I never agreed."
"Why's that Caroline?" Klaus asks, humoring her. Elijah just continues to stare at the photo on the collage.
"Stefan gave up on Elena after she broke his heart. He didn't even care to hear her name for years afterwards." She says confidently.
"What are you getting at?" Klaus asks annoyed he's being reminded of the many times he's hurt Camilla.
"She never gave up on you. Even after you completely shattered her heart." She says with a small sad smile.
"I'd have to disagree on that love." Klaus replies. "I mean she absolutely loathed me sh-" he's cut off when Caroline suddenly shouts.
"She checked on you! All the time Klaus! For years!" Caroline yells throwing her hands up in the air, finally revealing one of her sisters many secrets that needed to be heard.
Elijah swiftly turns around with confused brows. Klaus' mouth agape not knowing what to say.
"Every once in a while she would go to New Orleans for a week or so. She just wanted to make sure you were okay." Caroline sighs as she watches both him and Elijah's eyes tear up at the revelation. "I was the only one she told."
"She stopped for a while when she saw you with a blonde, she said you were happy. That you were smiling like how you used to with her. That you didn't even notice her sitting at a table drinking a coffee as you walked right past her." Caroline stutters out as she remembers Camilla breaking everything in sight with all of her overwhelming emotions.
"Camille." Klaus whispers with tears freely falling. She reminded him so much of Camilla that sometimes he pretended she was her so that he could feel at peace with himself. How could he not have seen her?
Caroline nods her had sadly at him, "The next time she went back was when Stefan died. She took the kids in the middle of the night with out anyone knowing and drove to New Orleans." She pauses gauging his face for a reaction. "Looking for you."
Klaus silently gasps as he holds onto a chair next to him as he feels himself slowly breaking down. Elijah looks away as he himself regrets the pain his family put her through.
"Of course you weren't there and when she asked around she said that Marcel Gerard boasted to her about how he took down the entire family." Debating her next words she looks Elijah in the eyes. "Hayley did not save your family. Cami did."
"What." Elijah gasps, barely handling the news. Let alone Klaus.
"She had one of our best students at the time track at least one of you. She didn't want to believe that you guys were just gone. And besides New Orleans where Klaus was no where to be found we found a house. There was a little girl sitting outside in the garden drawing. She saw Cami before Cami could speed away and told her everything she heard Hayley talking to an older lady about. But Hayley apparently never planned on looking for cures. So Camilla personally got everything needed for the cures and saved you all."
Klaus cant help the wail that comes out of his mouth as he kicks his foot thru the podium.
"She saved us all." Elijah whispers to himself.
"She never stopped caring about you Klaus. About any of you. I think she's in love with Stefan, madly in love. But I do honestly believe that you only get one epic love in your life. And you were hers. Don't let all of the bad memories shadow the good. Where there's darkness there will always be a light." She says as she begins walking towards the door again. Looking back one last time she gives Elijah a sad smile as he stands there dumbfounded and filled with regret.
Klaus slowly stands up and begins walking towards the coffin. For the first time that day he slowly opens the coffin.
Elijah slowly walks away leaving his brother to have a moment alone with her. But stares for a second longer, looking at his brothers true redemption one last time.
Klaus stares at her grey veined body for a second before crying all over again. Putting a hand on her cheek her lets out a cry. "I'm so sorry my love. I'm so sorry."
After a few minutes of silence he kisses her forehead and whispers barely audible. "In another life."
***
Jace and Alec hold the front of the casket over their shoulders with Stefan and Klaus behind them, Damon and Kol behind them carrying the back.
Kol had come back after Rebekah told him, that Caroline had told her that Camilla would have wanted him to send her away.
The weight of Camilla Forbes on their shoulders as they slowly walk to the empty dug up grave.
Gently setting her casket down, they all stare at it with tears falling down until it reaches the bottom of the suddenly very deep grave.
All six of them were to be the ones to pile the dirt onto the coffin, each shovel of dirt felt like a hundred pounds.
Lizzie slowly approaches the now full grave with a white rose. Bending down she places the rose on top of the dirt and kisses the new gravestone.
CAMILLA RAE FORBES
A Mother, A sister, A friend, A Lover.
Hope stands closely behind as she places a freshly cut red rose on the grave. Staring at it for a second more before breaking down in her fathers arms. Grieving for a life she almost had. Grieving for a mother that slipped out of her fingers so quickly. Grieving for her whole family.
CAMILLAS POV
"Grams I have to go back. They're suffering! They're so filled with grief that they won't even see what's coming!" I yell in frustration.
"You're not ready." She counters. "Everything will turn out fine child."
