'I dipped my lips in holy water, just to kiss her'

Spencer:

Washing the dishes after the girls had the bare minimum for dinner was something Spencer usually did whilst they went upstairs to brush their teeth for bed.
It was nice having the house to himself, when their Dad was out doing God knows what, he liked to pretend that he owned the property and he was in his kitchin, doing his chores, looking after his girls.
He didn't share this fantasy with anyone, it was his own little escape, so when Lillie was heard scrambling downstairs after half an hour, it knocked him out of the vision playing in his mind.
He turned to watch her pick at the paint on the wall, then turn to stare at him.
"We want a bedtime story," She told, watching him raise an eyebrow.

"What have you been doing for the past half hour?" He wondered, reaching for the towel to dry his hands.

"We brushed our teeth for 10 minutes then got dressed for 10 then tried sleeping for 20," Lillie explained and Spencer didn't comment on her maths, but it wouldn't have surprised him if they had taken that long to do those stated.

"Ok," He nodded, "I'll be up in a second,"
The blonde haired girl nodded and scrambled upstairs again.
Spencer let out a short breath and pushed in the chairs of the table thoughtfully, making sure to brush off the crumbs with his hand.
On his way to the stairs, he passed the wall that Lillie was scratching and noticed how there was a spot of paint missing.
He looked to the skirting board and saw the white paint by his feet.
His house was already crumbling.

"Spencie's comin'," He heard Lillie whisper to Lydia who giggled.
Spencer trecked upstairs and tapped quietly on their door before pushing it open.
He had to double take when he saw them.
They were both sat on Lydia's bed, wide grins on their faces, a pile of hair scrunchies and a wrapped cookie in clingfilm all placed carefully in front of them.
Spencer opened his mouth to speak but was cut off.

"We couldn't wait," Lillie wriggled her feet into a criss-cross position.
Again, Spencer tried to say something after but Lydia cut him off.
Only this time, his mind was telling him something that he hoped was true, and his eyes were filling up because of it.

"We've had this for ages! Not the cookie, but the scrunchies! Your hair is long, you need to tie it!" Lydia lifted three scrunchies then passed Lillie the cookie, "Happy early birthday Spence!"
Spencer clenched his jaw, fixing how his mouth had opened slightly, and dropped his gaze to the floor as the tears in his eyes doubled and trickled down his cheeks.
He looked up at the girls to see mortified expressions on their faces.
"Do you not like it?"

"No," Spencer shook his head, "I love it. Really, I do,"
But his words looked like a massive juxtaposition to the girls who watched their brother cry.
Spencer couldn't remember the last time he had a proper birthday gift. The girls were too young and didn't understand the concept of birthdays and thought that since they were younger, Spencer had to give them gifts, not the other way around.
So to be gifted something little as three scrunchies and a cookie he had stolen for one of them saved for him was the best thing in the world.
And all the effort that went into it!
They had made those hairbands, molded the material, threaded the string and sewed it together.
"Thank you,"

"But you look sad!" Lillie climbed out of the bed and rushed to her brother.
Spencer fell to one knee and cradled his sister, hiding his head in her shoulder.
He looked to Lydia and opened another arm for her to fall into.

"I'm crying because I'm happy," He told them, pulling away briefly because Lydia swiped her hands across Spencer's cheeks.
He chuckled sweetly at her gesture.
"Wanna put my hair up?"

The girls jumped at the offer, climbing over their brother, each grabbing a hairtye, leaving a light blue one in Spencer's lap.
He silently picked it up, felt the soft material and threaded it onto his wrist, smiling as the girls pulled his hair up into pigtails.
Once they pulled away from their work, they beamed at their brother who's eyes were full of awe as he looked back at them.
"Do I look good?" He wondered, watching their eyes scrunch as they giggled.

"Yeah!" They both agreed, though it was Lydia who squinted after then tugged on a strand to move it more into the centre.

"I am thankful, I am so thankful I have two amazing sisters like you," Spencer promised, feeling the emotions clog in his throat again but he insisted in pulling his sisters into a hug oncemore.
They didn't object, snuggling up to their brother and his safe embrace.
"I think you should get to bed now, we can celebrate again in four days,"

They nodded, obviously listening to anything he had to say.
After making sure they were comfortably tucked in, he grabbed the cookie they had saved for him and walked to the doorway, peering over his shoulder to double check they were ok, before shutting the door.
He contemplated going to his bedroom, thinking his bed would be a pretty good way to spend his night, but then remembered he still needed to mop the floor in the kitchen.
With a small sigh and a clench of his jaw, Spencer begrudgingly made his way downstairs again, feeling his hair wave behind him.
Passing the front door and heading into the kitchen was when he heard the knock.
Instantly his heart sped up.
Was it his father? Drunk and begging to be let in from the cold? Was it the tax man claiming the bills haven't been paid again despite the money he had been giving to his father?
Spencer looked through the peephole, keeping his breathing steady, then nearly sagged in relief when he saw Alice.
She was stood in a dark, small raincoat, a purple bonnet covering the top of her hair, the hair that swirled around her jaw and sat comfortably at her shoulders.
She was holding a small basket, looking uncomfortably around, as if she wasn't supposed to be there.
Without thinking about his appearance, Spencer opened the door, wanting to quickly get her inside and out of the rain.
She looked startled, looking up at him with her pretty eyes, such a light colour.
Multiple times Spencer had tried to figure out their colour without wanting to be rude. They were like honey, but that wasn't possible so he settled with an odd hazel colour.
"Did I interrupt?" She wondered, she sly smile on her lips.

Spencer chuckled awkwardly, "No uh... the bands were gifts from the girls,"
Alice giggled slightly, beaming up at him.
"Come in,"

Spencer moved aside, watching her stand in the hallway and unbutton the bonnet around her chin.
He had a whiff of her perfume and wanted to know what it was so he could get a bottle for himself. Just a little reminder of her.
It was a little odd seeing Alice in his house. She looked out of place, like she didn't belong, like she deserved more, but at the same time, she seemed so comfortable.
Looking around momentarily, Alice then focused her attention on Spencer who was already looking at her.
"I brought a gift," She lifted the basket in her hands, "Jasper and I are visiting our family over your birthday. I'm sorry,"

Spencer tried to not let his heart sink at the idea of not being able to see Alice on his special day, but shrugged it off. She was kind enough to have brought something for him--
But that was so ironic.
Was it a coincidence Lillie, Lydia and Alice was giving him gifts earlier then his birthday?
It made sense for the girls, they were always over excited, but that's when it occurred to Spencer.
Alice had told him not to go to ballet because something was going to go wrong. How did she know?
Did she know the girls were going to give him something and thought she should too?
How?
He clenched his jaw for a moment, looking at her, his eyes speaking a silent question.
"I'll explain everything," She mumbled, pursing her lips.

Spencer didn't even ask how she knew what he was going to say
"Let me take your coat," He outstretched his arms, watching a thankful smile slide up her cheeks as she de-armed her coat from her body and passed it to him.

He hung it on the hook over the heater, hoping it would be nice and warm for when she had to leave.
It wasn't until after he took it did he realize how cold her fingers were! Was it really that cold outside?
"We can go in here,"

He opened the door to the living room and his face grew dark at the state it was in.
Presentable... to an extent.
There were empty cans on the table, full of the space where alcohol should be.
His dad never cleaned up after himself.
There was old pictures dating back for 11 years ago of Spencer and his mother, one on the corner of the twins in Oscar's arms.
Spencer sat on the sofa, tapping his hand for Alice to sit opposite him.
He silently tugged out the hairbands and slid them onto his wrists, waving his hair out evenly with his fingers before looking up at the girl who was watching fondly.
"Is now a good time to talk?" Alice wondered, placing her hands in her lap.

"Yeah, absolutely," He nodded, eager for an explanation.

"OK," Alice breathed out then mumbled under her breath, "Jasper's gonna kill me..." She looked to the ceiling then began,
"There's things that I can't say but there are things that I can. I don't expect you to believe me but if you could remain open minded, that would be great.
Sometimes I know about things that haven't happened yet. I know about the weather, I know about what clothes Jasper is going to wear on a specific day, I know when Oscar is going to come home... and I know when people are in danger,"

Spencer sat with a frown on his features. This was something he was not expecting, thought as he thought about it, something he genuinely wasn't surprised about.
Anytime he was about to trip or knock something over, he would notice Alice appeared and steadied him or quickly moved the object out of the way.
Though that was just because she had a conscience right?
Right?
"Did you 'predict' something bad would happen at ballet?"

"Yes," She nodded confidently, "One of Jasper's past... friends... who recently saw all three of us together got jealous and wasn't going to do nice things to you,"
It was a lie but Spencer didn't pick up on it. He just saw how uncomfortable she was getting with the conversation and passed it off as that.
Alice fiddled with her fingers nervously, she didn't exactly know what Maria was going to do, but given her nature and what she did to Jasper, it wouldn't be good.
She heard his heartbeat increased as they both looked at each other.
Spencer looked away first, blush forming on his cheeks.

"You saved me?" Spencer guessed with a wince, it sounding so silly outloud.

"I'm not sure, but it was because I care about you too much to let something bad happen, no matter the size," Alice confessed.
Spencer clenched his jaw, a wide smile forming on his lips.
"Do you believe me?"

Spencer looked at her eyes.
Her expression was so full and sincear, it was so powerful he couldn't help but nod.
It made sense to an extent given the past things he had caught up on, but it was wild to think about.
Did she basically see the future? What kind of witchcraft was that?
Alice sagged with relief, the last thing she wanted Spencer to think of her was that she was a lier.
Spencer watched her sink back into the couch to relax.
Jesus.
She was so pretty.
"There's more I want to tell you, but I can't tell you just yet. Do you understand?"

"Yeah," Spencer nodded again, too awed to say anything else.
Alice smiled at him for a short second, bathing in his expression.
Then she sat up, her expression gleaming in excitement as she leant to grab the basket at her feet.

"Happy early birthday," She pushed it to his chest, her feet tapping excitedly at the floor.
Spencer chuckled nervously, opening the lid of the woven basket before taking out the contents wrapped in some pretty fabric.
He glimpsed up at her before focusing on the gift.
Inside the fabric was a wad of cash, a tiny bottle of some posh liquor and upon closer inspection of the fabric, it wasn't just some felt, it was a sweater.
Spencer looked up with wide eyes to Alice who was grinning wildly at him.

"Alice...," He trailed off, the emotions caught in his throat again.
She chuckled softly, shuffling closer on the sofa to comfort him.
"Thank you so much,"

"It's ok Spencer," She placed a hand on his knee, "We couldn't give you money next week since we'd be away so it's early too,"
She didn't need to explain her gift since Spencer understood already, but all he could do was nod and look at her.

"I don't even know what to say," Spencer swallowed, his voice cracking, "You and Jasper have helped me so much. How do I repay you?"

"You don't need to," Alice promised, taking his hand instead.

"I have to do something," Spencer inhaled, her gorgeous expression taking his breath away.
She thought for a moment before ultimately deciding.

"You can down that alcohol as a birthday treat? I want to see you try your first drink," Alice smirked.
A little secret Jasper and her liked to endulge in was going to bars and watching people's faces as it screwed up from the stinging taste.
Spencer didn't see the harm in it and popped the cap off.
He had never had alcohol before, it scared him ever since his father started to drink, but he couldn't deny Alice.
It was a little bottle, maybe 6 shots included, but he had to fulfil her request.
He threw it back, it burned his throat and his eyes winced.
Pulling away from the bottle, seeing how it was half empty, he gasped the fresh air and pulled a sour face.
Alice giggled.

"Your go," Spencer wrenched out, his saliva feeling like fire in his mouth.
Alice's face dropped but she rolled her eyes and drank the rest of the bottle.
She coughed a little, wincing too, but her reaction didn't last as long as Spencer's who was still sitting uncomfortably.
"Here, have this,"

Spencer pulled a hairband off his wrist, the light blue one the girls had made for him and passed it to Alice.
Her eyes glossed over as she looked at it.
"But didn't the girls...?"

"Yeah, but I'm sure they'd understand.  The colour looks good on you anyway," He flirted confidently.
Now, Spencer wasn't sure how quickly alcohol was supposed to kick in, he wasn't sure where this confidence had come from, but he had never felt like this before.
His heart was pounding and his hands were beginning to sweat the longer Alice looked at him.
God.
She was gorgeous.
How long had he been staring?
Did she think this was weird? Was he weird?
No.
He was just admiring someone who looked like she had been kissed by a Michelangelo.
"Alice..."

"Yes?" She whispered, copying his quiet voice.
Spencer swallowed, unable to look away from her intence but gorgeous eyes.

"I--I don't know. I just, I think you're just really pretty," He clenched his jaw, narrowing down on her reaction.
A cute smile blessed her lips and she looked away for a second.
Though when she looked back, she did something which altered Spencer's whole world.
Gently but quickly, her hand met his cheek and she pulled his jaw closer to press her lips against his.
Spencer's eyes blew open widely, all he could do was stare at the girl in front of him who had her eyes blissfully shut and her cold hand against his cheek.
Wow.
What a feeling.
Spencer relaxed back into it, shutting his eyes, enjoying the way her lips felt on his.
When she slowly pulled away, he subconciously went to follow, leaning forward as she went backwards. After realising his mistake, he blushed and sat back instantly, letting out a held, shaky breath.
Alice placed her hands in her lap and looked away, though a pretty laugh along with a sly peek from her lashes had Spencer leaning in to kiss her again.
Alice comfortably didn't decline, she relaxed into him, his hands going behind her back just as her's caressed his red cheeks.
This time, Spencer was the first to move away with a gasp.
He felt dizzy, in a good way, and completely exhilarated.

"I think you're just really pretty too," She whispered against his lips.
