୨⎯ Chapter 22⎯୧
"Meleth Nin"

AS WE rode through the lands, I found myself questioning my decision to attend the council meeting in the first place. The comfort of home seemed increasingly appealing in light of our current circumstances.

My reflections were interrupted by Théoden's resonant voice inquiring about troop numbers. The responses from Grimbold and Gamling painted a grim picture of our forces: only six thousand spears, far less than anticipated.

Aragorn's somber assessment echoed the gravity of our situation. "Six thousand will not be enough to break the lines of Mordor."

Despite the odds, Théoden's resolve remained unshaken. "More will come," he asserted, his voice carrying a note of determination.

The tension in the camp was palpable, reflected even in the restlessness of the horses. Legolas's keen observation about the men's unease and Éomer's ominous comment about the mountain's shadow only heightened the sense of foreboding.

Gimli's attempt to lighten the mood with a suggestion to find food was a welcome distraction. "As long as it's not troll food, I'm amenable," I quipped, grateful for the momentary levity.

Later, gathered around the campfire, I engaged in a quiet conversation with Aine about her future plans. Her uncertainty about her role after my departure to Mirkwood was evident, and I reassured her of her welcome in my future home, despite its peculiar inhabitants.

Our conversation was interrupted by the arrival of Gimli and Eomer with food, a welcome sight for our weary group. The ensuing meal provided a much-needed respite from the looming threat of battle.

As night fell and the camp settled into quietude, I found myself drawn to Legolas's tent. With Aine's encouraging smile, I made my way across the camp, each step weighted with the gravity of our situation.

Entering Legolas's tent, I found him seated by his bedroll, his features softened by the moonlight. "Liairse," he whispered, concern evident in his voice. "What troubles you?"

I confessed my inability to sleep, plagued by thoughts of the impending battle and its potential consequences for us all. Legolas rose to meet me, his hand intertwining with mine in a comforting gesture.

"We cannot dwell on the uncertainties of tomorrow," he murmured, his voice soothing my tumultuous thoughts. "All we can do is cherish the moments we have together, here and now."

As we stood there, enveloped in the quiet of the night, the weight of our unspoken fears hung heavy between us. Yet in Legolas's unwavering gaze, I found solace and strength.

"I promise you, Liairse," he whispered, drawing me closer. "No matter what trials lie ahead, I will always be by your side."

In that moment, as Legolas's lips met mine in a tender kiss, the world around us faded away. Our embrace deepened, a fervent expression of our love and devotion in the face of an uncertain future.

When we finally parted, breathless and exhilarated, I felt a sense of renewed purpose wash over me. In Legolas's arms, I found the strength to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

"Legolas, Meleth Nin," I whispered, the Elvish words carrying the depth of my feelings.

His eyes widened slightly, a smile gracing his features. "Meleth Nin, Liairse," he replied softly, his voice filled with warmth and affection.
