blue jay, who also goes by the nickname jay, is a dragon/pegasus hybrid who was once just supposed to be a pure dragon. when a pegasus student of celestia was tasked with a dragon egg hatching, he took his best friend, a gifted unicorn, to help. when they found an egg, they attempted to use magic to hatch it, but the unicorn accidentally transferred the pegasus' energy into the egg.

     they fled before the mother dragon returned, but blue jay had already been transformed into the hybrid. when it hatched, it grew up under the care of the dragon who was its mother, and after her death, it turned to the life of a pirate. 

     blue jay settled in ponyville years later, where it could come to represent the element of confidence.
