HAIR DRAWING
soo i'm very hyped bc from this chapter on we're gonna go into the real good stuff ™️
all the sexcy drawing and highlights ugh i'm excitedddd
anyways welcome!! today we're going to learn how to draw hair, it's one of my fave things to do <3
brushes
for drawing hair you'll need brushes. check out the chapter for importing brushes to find out how to do it.
if you want to find brushes, you can search ibispaint hair brush in pinterest and you'll find plenty to choose from.
for highlights i use this one, highly recommend it!
as a base i use one of those, the base de pelito one.
i usually only use a base and a hair highlight brush, i know there are probably lots of tutorials out there which show you how to do more detailed hair, but for me that's enough.
theory
now we're gonna look at how a hair strand is built: it consists of darker parts and some texture as well as highlights. here's an example:
we're gonna want to build these four things, texture, halftone, shadow and the highlight into each hair strand we're drawing so that the hair has lots of dimension.
mapping
first we're gonna make a layer and map out the hair we want to draw. for my example, daenerys has her top hair braided towards the back, so i want the hair to be flowing from the back of her head.
i always look at references whilst mapping the hair out so that it looks nice and flowy. search hair png on pinterest to find some good stuff.
that's what i drew as a map:
don't worry if it looks ugly, i promise it will look better once the real hair is on. trust the process ❤️
drawing
now we're gonna use the color picker and pick the darkest shade of the hair we want to draw, as a base. maybe turn off the coloring layer for that if you've got really strong coloring. make a new layer underneath your map and start drawing there. i usually set my opacity to 30-50 %. don't worry if you draw onto the face, you can always remove that later.
trust the process 😃🤌🏼
now onto some definition. use lighter and sometimes darker colors to give the hair depth. look at references to find out how that looks like, it makes it a lot easier! gradually build up to the brightest color.
don't worry about the hair on the face and sword. well clear that up later.
and brightest color here we go:
and now turn off the map layer - time to go in with the highlight brush. set the highlight brush to a color lighter than the brightest color of the hair and add some flowy hairs and sharper highlights. i also use this to balance out the hair in case the contrasts are too big. set the opacity to your liking.
now remove the unnecessary hair, add some shadow underneath the hair if needed and we're done!!
final result:
『 space to drop your own hair drawing tips and brushes <3 』
now, that's it! leave some love if this helped you <3
