Chapter 46 - The First Task
Y/Ns POV
Harry and Y/N,
I wish I could say everything I would like in this letter, but it's too risky in case the owl is intercepted - we need to talk face to face. Can you two ensure that you are alone by the fire in Gryffindor Tower at one o'clock in the morning on the 22nd of November? I know better than anyone that you can look after yourself and while you're around Dumbledore and Moody, I don't think anyone will be trying to hurt you. Be on the watch, Harry. I still want to hear about anything unusual. Let me know about the 22nd of November as quickly as you can.
-Sirius
Y/N,
I know you and Harry didn't put your names into the Goblet, if you're anything like your Mother, you're too smart to be getting yourself involved into something like this, people die in this tournament!
However, I'm more concerned about how this happened, it seems to me that someone is willing to hurt you two at any cost. Entering you into this tournament would have been very risky, especially under Dumbledore's nose.
Your Uncle is freaking out as usual, but we'll look more into this. We'll keep in touch.
-Dad
It's been a few weeks and the first task was arriving soon.
We still didn't know what the hell the first task was going to be, so me and Hermione spent most of our time in the library when we were not in class. Reading on anything that could be a part of this task.
Weirdly enough, I keep seeing Viktor Krum pop up in the library nearly every time we're here. He always looks towards the table that me and Hermione sit at.
Stalker much?
But I wonder why he keeps popping in?
Harry, Hermione, and I entered the Great Hall to see everyone with a copy of the Daily Prophet in front of their faces.
A random Slytherin walked up to me with a smug look on his face, so I grabbed his paper and began to read:
I suppose I get my strength from my parents. I know they'd be very proud of me. If only they could see me now.....sometimes at night I still cry about them, I'm not ashamed to admit it.....I know nothing will hurt me during the tournament, because I know they are watching over me.
Along with Harry, is his good friend Y/N L/N, who has entered the tournament but had not yet revealed how he put his name into the Goblet of Fire. L/N is an unbelievably handsome boy who claims to be the "Heartthrob of Hogwarts." Be that as it may, Y/N is rarely seen out of the company of one Hermione Granger, a stunningly pretty Muggle-born girl, who like Y/N, is one of the top students in the school.
"She's really ugly." Carolyn Bitterwood said in an interview on the subject. "It's like she's the offspring of a mountain troll ugly. But she is really smart, so she would be up to the task of making a love potion. I think that's how she did it."
When everyone received the article, most of the Slytherins took it upon themselves make fun of us.
"You need a hanky, Potter?" Malfoy mocked. "In case you start crying in Transfiguration?"
"Stunningly pretty." Carolyn Bitterwood laughed. "She's probably judging against a mountain troll."
"At least she's prettier than you, butter face." Pansy sneered. "And clearly smarter too."
A/N: We stan Davina Claire in this house
"Oh shove off, Parkinson." Carolyn sneered as we walked outside with Pansy and Mia.
Ron was still being a jealous prick and wouldn't talk to us either, spending a majority of his time with Dean and Seamus.
Which is honestly fine with me.
But speaking of the ginger idiot.
"What are you doing here?" Ron sneered as we walked past him in the corridor.
"Is walking against the rules here?" Harry asked sarcastically.
"Or are we not allowed to walk in the same direction as jealous, ginger idiots?" I followed up.
"Why don't you go prepare for your next interview." Ron spat as he tried to walk past me."
"Why don't you stop being a jealous prick, Weasley." Pansy scowled.
And what Ron said next really irritated all of us.
"Oh shut up, you pug faced bitch!" He shouted at Pansy.
"Oh hell no!" Mia shouted as she stormed towards Ron, who looked very scared and tried to run away, but not before Mia grabbed him by the collar and slammed him against a wall.
"Would you mind repeating that?" Mia said angrily.
"I-I s-s-said p-ug faced b-bitch." Ron said while trembling under Mia's intense gaze.
"You really shouldn't have said that." Mia said as she kicked him hard in the stomach.
As Ron laid on the ground cringing, Mia gave another kick, but this time to Ron's groin.
"What in the bloody hell?" Ron shouted as he rolled over in pain.
"We're not finished yet." Mia smirked as she began to throw punches at his face.
"Ow! You're hurting me!" Ron cried after a while.
"That's the point, weasel." Mia said as she stopped punching him.
Pansy pulled Mia back, most likely not wanting her girlfriend to escalate the situation, but before she could do so, Mia bent down to Ron's level.
"Don't ever insult her again." She said. "Or I'll do far worse."
Mia then grabbed her girlfriends hand, patted me on the back and went to go join Leo Marcel in a nearby alcove.
Any other day, I would help Ron up and take him to the hospital wing. Now, I didn't care, I had other things to do.
Like figuring out the first task with Hermione and Harry.
———————————————————————————
After classes that day, Hermione had taken me and Harry to Hogsmeade so we could get some fresh air before the first task. Which was a very good idea to me, but Harry didn't want to go.
"Is Ron going to be there?" He asked.
"How am I supposed to know." Hermione scoffed. "I'm not his personal secretary."
"If Ron's there, I'm leaving. I'm also wearing the invisibility cloak."
Harry met us by the Entrance Hall, obviously wearing his Invisibility Cloak, as we set off for Hogsmeade.
"I hate talking to you in the Cloak!" Hermione snapped, clearly fed up with our chef with Ron. "I never know if I'm looking at you or not!"
"Just think of it as a date?" I suggested. "But Harry's there in his invisible presence.
"I-I suppose." Hermione blushed while grabbing my hand as we continued our way to the Three Broomsticks.
On our way there, we passed by numerous shops. Me and Hermione went in a few places and bought a few things for ourselves, especially in Honeydukes where I bought a ton of different sweets.
On our way out, we saw Selena, Andy Livingstone, and Cho Chang walking out of the Owlery talking to each other.
And even with the Invisibility Cloak, I knew that Harry was staring at Cho.
"Maybe you should take a picture, it'll last longer." I smirked.
"What are you talking about, you can't even see me." Harry replied rather quickly.
"Even with the Cloak, I can still tell that you are gawking at Cho."
"Harry, why don't you just ask her out already." Hermione said.
"No chance that will happen." Harry sighed.
"You are completely hopeless mate."
When we arrived at the Three Broomsticks, we were met with a very unpleasant surprise in Rita Skeeter, who was sitting over at a table near our usual booth.
"Merlin, I really don't want to deal with her." I said.
"Can we leave." Harry said. "I don't want to be anywhere near that ginger git."
"Can't you just make up with him already!" Hermione said angrily.
"When he apologizes then yes, we will make up with him."
As we were walking around the village, Hermione had a pretty good idea to get the other villagers involved in S.P.E.W. Which was really going well until we saw Hagrid and Professor Moody approach us.
"All right, Hermione? Y/N?" Hagrid said as he came closer to us.
"Hello, Hagrid." Hermione and I said.
"Hello, Potter." Professor Moody said while looking at the spot Harry was in. "Nice Cloak."
Whoa.
"Can your eye-I mean, can you-?" Harry stuttered.
"Yes, it can see through Invisibility Cloaks." Moody answered. "And it comes in useful at time, I can tell you."
"That's brilliant." I said in awe as Moody nodded at me.
Hagrid then bent down to our level, as if he was telling us something private.
"Meet me tonight at midnight at me canon. Wear the cloak." He said before straightening up.
"Nice ter see yeh both, Y/N, Hermione."
Hagrid winked before leaving as Moody walked right behind him.
"Why does he want to meet us at midnight?" Harry asked.
"I don't think you should go." Hermione said. "It might make you late for Sirius."
"I can't go anyway." I said. "Detention with Snape."
"Oh, I forgot you had that." Harry said. "Best of luck mate."
"You shouldn't have insulted him, Y/N." Hermione said. "You got yourself into trouble over me."
"And I'd do it again in a heartbeat." I said. "Besides, there's nothing that bad that Snape is going to do."
———————————————————————————
Later that night, I bid Hermione and Harry goodbye as I went down to the dungeons. When I arrived, Selena, Sam, Axel, Tom, Kieran, Laura and Mia were waiting inside. Ready to serve their detentions as well.
"The seven of you have been arranged to clean every inch of this classroom, without the use of magic." He spat. "If I catch you doing otherwise, there will be three more detentions with me here in the dungeons. Do I make myself clear?"
"Yes, Professor."
"Yep."
"Without magic?"
"This is bullshit."
As we dispersed ourselves to start cleaning, Snape pulled me over to the side.
"Fortunately for you, Professor McGonagall found it necessary to relinquish your previous detentions so you will only be serving one with me." He said. "I will not be so lenient next time."
"You got it." I said as I walked over to where Laura and Axel were.
Harry's POV
After Y/N left for his detention with Snape, I left Hermione in the Common Room to go meet up with Hagrid.
I wonder what he wants to talk to me for.
Nonetheless, I grabbed the Invisibility Cloak and made my way over to Hagrids Hut.
As I reached the Hut, I knocked three times on Hagrids door, and right on cue, I could hear Fang barking up a storm.
"Is that you, Harry, Y/N?" Hagrid asked into the darkness.
"Just me, Hagrid." I said. "Y/N had detention tonight."
"Blimey, he can never stay out of trouble, just like his Dad." He said. "I got summat teh show ya."
Hagrid seemed to be pretty excited for whatever he was about to show me. He was wearing a flower that looked as if it had been freshly picked. He also looked like he had combed his hair. Or at least attempted to comb it.
"What exactly are you showing me?" I asked.
"Come with me, keep quiet an' keep yourself covered with that Cloak." Hagrid ordered. "We won' take Fang, he won' like it..."
"That's fine, but I can't stay long." I said as politely as I could. "I have to be back at the castle by one o'clock."
Hagrid ignored me as he continued to walk, making giant strides towards the Beaubaxtons carriage."
"Hagrid, what-?" I tried to ask.
"Shhhh." Hagrid said as he knocked on the door, the recipient revealing itself to be Madame Maxine.
"Ah, Agrid....it is time?" She asked.
"Bong-sewer." Hagrid said as he held his arm out for Madame Maxine to take. She took his hand after closing the door to the carriage and started to walk slowly down the steps with me following behind.
If only Y/N was here to see this.
"Where is it you are taking me, Agrid?" Madame Maxine asked, which was nice because I was wondering the same thing myself.
"Yeh'll enjoy this. Worth seein', trust me. On'y—don' go tellin' anyone I showed yeh, alright? Yeh're not supposed ter know."
"Of course not."
Oh Hagrid, she's obviously using you to gather information on the tournament.
I basically had to run to keep up with Hagrid and Maxine, as they were both very tall, while periodically checking my watch, counting down the time that I had to leave to meet Sirius in the Common Room.
After lots of walking, we arrived at an area so far into the Forbidden Forest, that the Black Lake was completely out of view.
"Hagrid, can you pl-"
But I never got to finish my sentence as I heard men shouting up ahead.....along with an ear splitting roar.
Hagrid led us around the trees and came to a stop. I saw lots of fire around the trees until I looked to see where the fire was coming from.
And I couldn't believe my eyes.
Dragons.
Five fully grown, giant, and incredibly vicious dragons, all fighting the men in an attempt to break free from the cages they were in. Fire shot in nearly every direction, shooting nearby trees to burst into flames. All while the men tried to subdue the dragons in their cages.
There was a blue dragon with long, pointed horns that was snapping at the men on the ground; a scaly green one, which was small compared to the others; a red dragon with gold spikes all around its face; and another dragon with massive scales that was biting and clawing at the men underneath.
I would not want to fight that thing.
"Dragons? That's the first task?" I asked Hagrid, eventually getting the point of all of this.
"Wan' a closer look?" Hagrid asked Madam Maxine excitedly.
"I think I'm going to head back Hagrid." I said. "I have somewhere I need to be."
Hagrid ignored me and went closer to the dragons with Madam Maxine. I on the other hand, had to go meet up with Sirius, and tell Y/N what was going to happen in the next task.
This is not going to be fun.
———————————————————————————
Y/Ns POV
"Dragons!" I exclaimed as Harry, Hermione, and I walked through the corridor the next day. "That's the first task?"
Snape's detention was pretty awful, he had us clean his entire classroom without magic, and I think he had me do the most cleaning, due to his long bearing grudge against me.
Ron still wasn't talking to us, like the jealous gif that he was. But I had a feeling that he wanted to apologize at some point.
On top of that, Laura apologized for ignoring me and Harry the past few weeks, and said that she knows we didn't put our names into the Goblet. Which I was very happy to hear.
"Why so tense, Potter, L/N?" Malfoy said while sitting inside of a tree.
"My father and I have a bet you see. I don't think you're going to last ten minutes in this tournament." He said as he jumped from the tree.
"He disagrees, he thinks you won't last five!" He sneered as Harry walked up to him angrily.
"I don't give a DAMN what you or your father think, Malfoy!" Harry yelled. "He's vile and cruel, and you're pathetic."
"You tell him, Harry!" Heather waved as she walked towards us with Natasha, Tom, and Summer Carlton.
As Harry walked back towards us, he smiled at Heather. But Malfoy tried to cast a spell towards him.
I mean he tried.
"OH, NO YOU DON'T SONNY!" Moody bellowed as he pointed his wand towards Malfoy, turning him into a ferret.
"That'll teach you to cast a spell when someone's back is turned!"
This has to be one of the best days of my life.
"He really is a ferret face." Heather laughed.
He hovered the ferret up and down as Mum came running up to us as he paid no attention to her.
"Professor Moody! Professor Moody! What are you doing?" She asked madly.
"Teaching." Moody grumbled.
"I-is that a student."
"Technically, it's a FERRET."
"He took the ferret and shoved it into Crabbes trousers as he squirmed in agony. Moody then turned to us and winked.
At this point, all of us were rolling on the ground laughing.
Mum walked over angrily and turned Malfoy back to normal. Malfoy turned around to find Moody staring at him with his arms crossed.
"My father will hear about this!" He said.
Oh yes, the common phrase.
"IS THAT A THREAT?" Moody yelled once more as he ran after Draco, who was scrambling in fear. "I COULD TELL YOU STORIES ABOUT YOUR FATHER THAT WOULD CURL EVEN YOUR GREASY HAIR, BOY!"
"Professor Moody!"
"IT DOESN'T END HERE BOY!"
Mum stood in front of Professor Moody to stop him from doing anything else to Draco.
"We never use transfiguration as a punishment." She said to him. "Surely Professor Dumbledore told you that."
"He might have mentioned it." Moody grumbled as he put his wand to his mouth.
"Well, you will do well to remember it. Away!" She said to the other students as Moody stuck his tongue out before he pulled Harry away.
"Don't talk to me for the next few minutes." Tom said to us as we walked away.
"Why's that?"
"I never want to get that image out of my head." He said as we all laughed.
Tom and Heather dispersed from the group as me and Hermione went to the library for much needed research for the first task.
———————————————————————————
The day of the First task has arrived. We were given our own robes for the task with our names on the back of them, which was pretty cool.
What wasn't very cool? The fact that I'm about to go outside and try not to get killed by a dragon.
Fun times.
Harry was wearing black and red, showing the Gryffindor theme, mine happened to be both red and blue, for obvious reasons.
Harry was pacing around nervously as I stood in the side of the room near the tent flap. I did notice that Krum was glaring angrily at me while we were in the tent.
As if I'm not allowed to be in the same room as he is. Or breathe the same air.
What a creepy asshole.
The other champions seemed to be just as nervous as I was. As I stood next to the tent door, I heard a whisper from beside me.
Hermione's POV
Selena, Andy, and I were outside of the tent where Y/N, Harry, and the other champions were prepping for the first task. I thought it would be a good time to wish them luck.
"Go on then." Andy smiled as they motioned to the tent.
"Pssst!" I whispered. "Y/N is that you?"
"Yeah, I'm here Mione." Y/N said.
"Where's Harry?"
"Pacing around nervously, can't say I blame him."
"How are you feeling?" I asked. "Are you okay? Nervous? The key is to concentrate. After that you just have to..."
"Step outside and battle a dragon?" He said nervously. "Maybe try not to die?"
I couldn't help myself. I burst in through the tent door and buried myself into him in a tight hug. I was scared, I didn't know what was going to happen. And I didn't know if he was ever coming back. There's so much I wanted to tell him. And now I don't even think I'll ever have a chance to do so.
He wrapped his arms around me and held me close, whispering soothing words into my ear.
"It's going to be okay." He whispered. "I'll be fine."
But just as he did, a flash came from around the corner as we turned in confusion to find Rita Skeeter walking in.
"Do you mind?" Y/N said angrily.
"Young love! Ohh........how?" She paused for a moment to find the right word. "Stirring. Well, if everything goes unfortunate today, you two will make the front page!"
"You have no business here." Krum said to her. "This tent is for champions and friends."
"No matter." Rita said as she looked at Krum. "We've got what we wanted."
"Good day, champions." Dumbledore said as he entered.
"And a good day to you too sir." Cedric said.
"Gather round please. Now you've wondered and at last, the moment has arrived. The moment only five of you can fully appreciate."
He looked at me strangely and kindly asked, "What are you doing here, Miss Granger?"
"I was wishing Harry and Y/N good luck." I said. "I'll just go."
Before I left, I brought Y/N in for another hug before leaving the tent. Coming back to Selena and Andy who were smirking at me.
"Oh shut up." I laughed as I followed them to our seats.
Y/Ns POV
"Champions, in a circle around me." Mr. Crouch said as I stated angrily at him. I was still pissed about what he did to Winky.
"Miss Delacour, over here. Mr. Krum, and Potter over here. L/N and Diggory, next to Potter. Miss Delacour, if you will."
Crouch then held a bag out to Fleur, who dipped her hand in and pulled a model of a green dragon.
"The Welsh Green." Crouch said. "Mr. Krum...."
He put the bag towards him, where Krum pulled out another dragon.
"The Chinese Fireball!" He did the same for Cedric and Harry, where Cedric pulled out another dragon and Harry pulled a red dragon.
"The Swedish Short-Snout." Crouch said to Cedric as he turned to Harry.
"And the Hungarian Horntail."
"Which leaves Mr. L/N." Crouch said before handing the bag to me, and before I could grab my dragon.."
"Stop!" Charlie Weasley burst into the tent. "We have a massive problem!"
"What do you mean, boy?" Crouch said. "What happened?"
"We were meant to bring a different dragon." Charlie said, nearly out of breath. But someone buggered it all up!"
"What do you mean?" Dumbledore asked.
"We meant to bring a Hebridean Black, but someone brought the wrong dragon." Charlie said. "Y/N is going to have to fight a Romanian Demonskull."
"And it's the most dangerous dragon to exist."
A/N: Yes, I created my own dragon species, and yes, it is Drogon from Game Of Thrones.
That's it, I'm going to die.
"Are you kidding?!" I yelled. "Who was stupid enough to bring a damn Romanian Demonskull!"
I was furious, even more pissed off then I was when Snape insulted Hermione a few weeks back.
"Mr. L/N, please calm down." Dumbledore said.
"Calm down?!" I exclaimed. "That's easy for you to say! You're not the one risking your life to fight a bloody dragon!"
"Please, Y/N." Dumbledore said calmly. "I too am confused as to why-"
"I can't do this." I said. "I'm going to die."
"I agree with Y/N." Charlie said. "We need to postpone the task until we can switch dragons, that's a death trap out there."
Dumbledore took a minute to think about it, which I was very confused about, since this should be a quick answer.
"We have to continue with the task." Dumbledore said as Crouch nodded.
"Are you bloody kidding me?!!" I exclaimed.
"Y/N please calm down." Dumbledore said calmly. "And do not worry, there are many trained Aurors in the arena who will help subdue the dragon if need be."
I calmed down for a bit before nodding my head reluctantly. Turning my attention towards Crouch as he began to speak once more.
"Your objective is simple." Crouch said to us. "Collect the egg, this you must do, for each egg contains a clue without which you cannot hope to proceed to the next task. Any questions?"
Cedric went first, and within 15 minutes, the roar of the Swedish Short Snout came out, meaning that he retrieved his egg. Fleur went in afterwards after smiling at me and retrieved her egg.
Krum went in shortly after and faced off against the Chinese Fireball.
"Very daring!" Bagman bellowed. "That's some nerve he's showing—and yes, he's got the egg!"
After Krum came back inside, he turned over to me and Harry and smirked over in our direction. I merely glared at him.
Oh how I would love to punch his bald, pumpkin headed face.
It was now Harry's turn to go and before he went, I brought him in for a brotherly like hug.
I heard the Horntail come down as Harry faced it. It was giant, with a massive spiked tail that looked like it could smash him.
Harry raised his wand and shouted "Accio Firebolt!"
After a few moments of awkward silence, said Firebolt flew out and Harry grabbed onto it, engaging in a game of car and mouse with the Horntail before swooping down under and grabbing his egg.
It was pretty brilliant to be quite honest.
"Look at that!" Bagman yelled. "Will you just look at that! Our youngest champion is the quickest to get his egg! This is surely going to shorten the odds on Mr. Potter!"
It was now time to face my dragon, as I walked outside, Harry patted my back as I walked through the tunnel.
"I can do this." I said to myself as I took a deep breath, trying to prepare myself for what's to come.
I stepped outside the tent to come face to face with a 20 foot dragon, with black scales and smoldering red eyes.
Here goes nothing.
