Chapter 34 - The Patronus
Y/Ns POV
"You come into my classroom at this ungodly hour and you ask if you can learn to perform transformation that is impossible for mere 3rd year students?" Mum exclaimed.
"Yes, that's why I came by."
"My answer is no." She said sternly.
"But why not?" I asked.
"Because it is an incredibly dangerous procedure that has disastrous consequences if not performed properly!"
"Please Mum, it could be a nice educational experience, who knows, I may not even want to do it."
That is a lie.
Mum took a few seconds of silence, most likely to think about what she was going to say.
"Fine." She sighed. "But it will be very hard to pull off. But I suppose it could be good for your lessons with Professor Dumbledore."
"Thanks Mum." I hugged her. "Goodnight!"
"Goodnight Y/N." She said. "But please don't let me catch you after hours again."
"Will do, Mum." I said walking out of her classroom.
I made my way back to the Common Room. Being extra careful watching out for Filch, or Peeves for that matter.
I whispered the password and watched the portrait hole fling open to reveal Hermione sleeping on the couch.
She must have been waiting for me to get back.
I went over to the couch and sat down next to her, wrapping my arm around her shoulders and pulled her closer.
"Goodnight Hermione." I whispered while pacing a kiss on her forehead. "Sweet dreams."
I swear I could see a small smile on her face as she cuddled into my chest.
I decided that it was time I got some sleep myself, so with Hermione cuddling into my chest, I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep.

Hermione's POV
The next morning, I woke up with my arms wrapped around Y/Ns body. He must have returned to the common room late last night. I gently nudged him as he stirred awake and smiled.
"Good morning Y/N." I said as I hugged myself into him.
"Good morning to you too, Hermione." He said hugging back.
"We should probably get ready for breakfast." I said blushing.
"I suppose you're right."
We separated to go into our respective dorm rooms to get changed, when I came back down the stairs, Y/N was wiggling a mouse toy and playing with Crookshanks and Gracie.
"Shall we go?" I asked petting the cats.
"We shall." He replied while holding out his hand.
I intertwined our hands together and walked with him to the Great Hall for breakfast.
The entire day, we focused on our lessons. However, I did notice Y/N and Harry talking to Professor Lupin after class was over.
They seemed to be taking for a long while, so I decided to head to the library in order to get some much needed work done.
After a few hours, we all met up in the courtyard to go to Hagrids house. The four of us haven't visited him in a while. It was very cold the entire walk down to his cabin. We arrived to find the cabin covered in snow. Ron knocked on the door, but there was no answer.
"He's not out, is he?" I asked as I shivered from the cold. Y/N seemed to have noticed and put his arm around me, pulling me close.
Ron put his ear to the door and tried to listen for any sounds coming from inside.
"There's a weird noise!" He said. "Listen, is that Fang?"
"Think we should go get someone?" Y/N said.
"Hagrid!" Harry shouted. "Hagrid, are you in there?"
Footsteps were heard coming from inside and Hagrid opened the door. He had clearly been crying as his eyes were swollen.
"Are you okay Hagrid?" Y/N asked timidly.
"Haven't you heard?" Hagrid bellowed.
"Hagrid, what is it?" I asked.
Hagrid led us inside and pointed to a letter on Hagrid's table. Y/N lifted it up and read out:
Dear Mr. Hagrid,
Further to our inquiry into the attack by a Hippogriff on a student in your class, we have accepted the assurances of Professor Dumbledore that you beat no responsibility for the regrettable incident.
"Then that's okay, Hagrid!" Ron exclaimed. "You got off!"
"That's not all Ron." Y/N said as he looked down and continued to read.
However, we must register our concern about the Hippogriff in question. We have decided to uphold the official complaint of Mr. Lucius Malfoy, and this matter will therefore be taken to the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures. This hearing will take place on April 20th, and we ask you to present yourself and your Hippogriff at the Committee's office in London on that date. In the meantime, the Hippogriff should be kept tethered and isolated.
"But you said that Buckbeak isn't a bad Hippogriff, Hagrid." Ron said. "I bet he'll get off!"
"Yeh don' know them gargoyles at the Commitee fer the Disposal o' Dangerous Creatures!" Hagrid weeper. "They've got it in fer interesting creatures!"
"That blonde son of a bitch." Y/N gritted his teeth. "Of course he complained to daddy."
Buckbeak, who was inside, was eating something that was bleeding on the floor.
"I couldn't leave him tied up out there in the snow!" He bellowed. "All on his own. At Christmas."
"How about we help you Hagrid?" Y/N asked. "I'm sure there's some books on Hippogriff cases in the library! We can help prove that Buckbeak is safe."
"And you can call us as witnesses!" I said. "I'm sure I've read a case of Hippogriff baiting where the Hippogriff got off."
"Let's do it together." Y/N said to me as I smiled and nodded.
I wanted to help with this for two reasons. Obviously I wanted to help prove that Buckbeak was innocent and that Malfoy was being an absolute git. And I also wanted to have the time to get closer to Y/N and spend more time together.
Hagrid thanked the four of us and before we left, Y/N asked if he could come near Buckbeak. Since he liked Y/N, Hagrid allowed it. Y/N brought me over and did the same thing he did when he met Buckbeak for the first time in class. I bowed as well while Buckbeak did the same.
"Hey buddy." Y/N said as Buckbeak leaned into his touch. "This is Hermione." He gestured to me. "She's my best friend and an amazing person, you'll love her."
Buckbeak looked towards me as Y/N said, "I think he's letting you come towards him."
I walked up to Buckbeak and placed my hand gently onto his head. Buckbeak chirped a bit loudly to my surprise.
"I think he likes you." Y/N smiled as he took my other hand.
From the corner of my eye, I could see Harry and Ron smirk at the both of us.
โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ
The next morning was Christmas morning, the four of us plus the other Weasleys had decided to stay at Hogwarts this Christmas. Because of the events of last year, this will be my first actual Christmas at the castle and I was very excited.
Ginny had woken me up very early in the morning and dragged me down to the common room where all of the other boys were.
"Presents!" Ron exclaimed.
I had gotten a Weasley sweater with a big "H" in the middle, a couple of books from my parents, Harry got me some treats for Crookshanks, Ron had given me some sweets, and Ginny had given me a telescope.
Y/Ns gift was absolutely wonderful, he had given me a photo album with some of our favorite pictures of all of us in the castle. Some of the pictures were from our time at Hogsmeade and had been enchanted to move all the time.
"Colin may be a bit annoying." Y/N said. "But he does take some damn good pictures."
"I love it so much Y/N." I said sweetly. "Thank you."
Y/N had received some chocolate frogs from his Uncle, and a new set of headphones for his Walkman. He had also received a sweater from Mrs. Weasley, a few books from Harry, another telescope from Ginny, and some sweets from Ron as well.
I had given Y/N some souvenirs and books from my vacation in Paris, which he was very thankful for. As well as a broom kit for Quidditch.
"Maybe someday we could go to France together." Y/N said to me. "You could show me around."
"I'd love that." I blushed and hugged myself into him.
As we were both looking through the photo album, Crookshanks and Gracie came down to the common room and sat themselves onto our laps. Gracie had a spider in her mouth as she laid on Y/Ns lap.
"Clever girl." He said as she purred. "Did you catch that all by yourself?"
"Get those beasts away from me." Ron said. "Or else I'll turn them into bloody tea cozy's ."
"If you touch Gracie or Crookshanks, Ronald." Y/N said calmly. "You will be spending the rest of your holidays at the bottom of the Black Lake."
Ron didn't have anything to say after that.
We continued to read through the photo album while Ron and Harry were unwrapping the rest of their presents.
Harry had received a strange present with no label on it.
"What's that?" Ron asked as he pointed at the strange gift. Harry opened the package to reveal a brand new broomstick. Y/N and Ron had widened their eyes at the broomstick in Harry's hands.
"Bloody hell." Y/N said. "That's a damn Firebolt!"
"But who sent it to you?" Ron asked quietly.
"Look and see if there is a card." Harry said.
Y/N got up and looked through the Firebolt's wrapping. "Huh, there's nothing here." He said.
"But who would spend their money on a Firebolt for you?"
"Maybe it was the Dursley's." Y/N said sarcastically. "From what I've seen, they are very pleasant people."
"I bet it was Dumbledore," Ron said as he took the Firebolt as if it were made of glass. "He sent you the invisibility cloak anonymously."
"But it was Harry's fathers." Y/N said. "Who he inherited it from."
"That's why he wouldn't say it was from him!" Ron exclaimed. "In case some gif like Malfoy said it was favoritism. Wait till Malfoy sees you on this! Not even Viktor Krum has something like this yet?"
"Who?" Y/N asked.
"You don't know who Viktor Krum is?" Ron questioned.
"Should I?"
"He's only the best Quidditch player in the world!" Ron exclaimed. "He plays for the Bulgarian National Team!"
Something about the Firebolt did not sit well with me. Why would somebody sent it to Harry without any sort of note?
"That's supposed to be a good broom, isn't it?" I asked.
"It's the best broom there is, Hermione." Ron said.
"So it must have been really expensive..."
"Probably cost more than all the Slytherin brooms out together!" Ron said in delight.
"Yeah, but who would send Harry something as expensive as that, and not even tell him about it?"
"Who cares?" Ron said eagerly. "Listen, Harry, can I have a go on it? Can I?"
"I don't think anyone should ride it yet!" I yelled as everyone turned to me.
"What do you think Harry's going to do with itโ-sweep the floor?" Ron asked.
"That is very strange." Y/N said. "Who'd send Harry a broom like that without any sort of note?"
"Who cares." Ron glared at us.
โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ
Y/Ns POV
A few hours later, the Christmas feast was being held in the Great Hall. Professor Trelawney had come by our table to give a very Vague prediction about How either me or Harry will die a heroic death in a few years, but we didn't listen.
A few friends of ours from Ravenclaw, Sam Auras, Axel Leroy Smith, and Thea Biswas also joined us during the feast. We have a Quidditch match coming up after the holidays aganist Ravenclaw so we were all very excited about that.
"Well Harry received a Firebolt for Christmas." Ron said with his mouth full.
"Hold on." Axel said. "You mean to tell me that Harry received a f*cking Firebolt?"
"But who sent it to you?" Sam asked.
"There was no note." Harry said. "Nothing else either, just the broom."
"That is very strange." Thea replied as we nodded.
"But who cares." Ron said. "It's a bloody Firebolt."
Hermione looked very uneasy as we were talking about the Firebolt towards the end of the feast so before we left, I pulled her to an empty corridor.
"Are you all right?" I asked. "You've been looking troubled the entire feast."
"I think that Sirius Black sent Harry the broom." Hermione said. "He may have even jinxed it to hurt him."
"That does make sense." I said. "I think we should tell Mum."
Hermione nodded and we told Mum about the Firebolt and our theory on Sirius Black.
As we went back to the Common Room, Sam, Axel, and Thea were admiring the Firebolt with Ron. He was also bragging about Gryffindors chances with the new broomstick.
"So that's it then?" Mum asked. "Mr. L/N and Miss Granger have informed me that you have been sent a broomstick, Potter."
Ron and Harry looked at us while glaring daggers at Hermione as she sat down at a table and pretended to read a book.
"May I?" Mum said politely as Harry passed the Firebolt to her. She examined the broom in all angles and asked. "And there was no note at all, Potter? No card? No message of any kind?"
"No." Harry said.
"I see..." She said. "Well, I'm afraid I will have to take this Potter."
"W-what? Why?"
"It will have to be checked for Jinxes. I'm no expert but I daresay Madam Hooch and Professor Flitwick will strip it down."
"Strip it down?" Ron asked. Looking very appalled at the idea of stripping a broomstick down.
"It shouldn't take more than a few weeks. You will have it back if we are sure it is jinx free."
"There's nothing wrong with it!" Harry said. Honestly, Professorโ"
"You can't know that Potter." Mum said. "Not until you've flown it, at any rate, and I'm afraid that's out of the question until we are certain it has not been tampered with. I shall keep you informed.
She then left the Common Room with the Firebolt as Harry stared at her leaving.
Ron turned furiously at Hermione and yelled. "What did you go running to McGonagall for?"
"Because I, and Y/N agrees with me, that Harry received that broom from Sirius Black!" I yelled.
"Calm down Ron." Sam said. "It's not a big deal."
"Shut up you." Ron glared at him and turned back to Hermione. "You had no right!"
"Oh shut the hell up you git!" I yelled while getting in front of him. "It's not even your broom so I don't know why you're so upset, she's looking out for Harry."
"I think now is our queue to leave." Axel said as the three Ravenclaws left the Common Room.
"Come on Hermione." I said taking her hand. "Let's get out of here."
As we left the Common Room hand in hand, I glared furiously at Ron. I don't know why he was so upset in the first place.
I spent the rest of my Christmas with Hermione in the courtyard. We built a snowman and had some fun playing in the snow.
Despite Ron's outburst. It was a very nice Christmas.
โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ
For the last few days, Hermione had avoided coming to the Common Room since Harry and Ron were still mad at her. I joined her since I didn't want her to be alone. Most of the time we were in the library looking at different books to help with Buckbeak's case.
Unfortunately, we had to see both Harry and Ron when classes started back up, as Harry did mention to me about the private lessons with Lupin on the patronus charm.
"Ah, yes." Lupin said. "Let me see...how about eight o'clock on Thursday evening? The History of Magic classroom should be large enough...I'll have to think carefully on how we're going to be able to do this...we can't bring a real Dementor into the castle to practice on."
As me and Harry went back to our seats, Ron was talking about Professor Lupin.
"Still looks ill doesn't he?" Ron said. "What do you reckon the matters with him?"
"I reckon it's none of you're business Ronald." Hermione said.
"If you don't want to tell us, then don't." Ron snapped.
"Hey Ron." I said as he turned to me. "Remember when you said you never wanted to be on my bad side second year?"
"Well guess what, you're on it." I said grasping onto my desk, putting another dent into it.
As Ron looked down, he shrunk in fear.
"Let's just go Y/N." Hermione said, taking my hand and leading me out of the classroom.
Hermione then led me into a corridor in the hallway and pulled me aside.
"I think Professor Lupin is a werewolf." She said.
"I think you might be right." I said. "The moon during class, the potion he drank while we were in Hogsmeade, and the lesson on werewolves as well."
"I don't think we should tell anyone." She said.
"I agree." I said. "Professor Lupin is a good guy."
She then smiled and hugged me tightly. "Thank you so much for being there with me Y/N." She said. "I don't know what I would do without you."
"Anything for you Mione." I said while kissing her on the top of her head. Giggling as I did so.
She took my hand again and led us to the library. Where we spent the rest of the day together.
โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ
Thursday evening came around quickly and it was now time for me and Harry's lesson with Professor Lupin. Which I was very excited for
Harry was still a bit irritated with me and Hermione for the Firebolt being taken and stripped down, but he knew the both of us had good intentions. Hopefully, he'll be able to get the broom back soon and it will be jinx free.
The room was pretty dark when me and Harry came in, there was no sign of Professor Lupin anywhere. Until the door slowly opened and Lupin walked through, carrying a large trunk.
"Sorry I'm late." Lupin said while leaning on the desk.
"What's that?" I asked.
"Another boggart." He said. "I thought it would turn into a dementor for you, Harry, so I've been searching the castle ever since Monday, and very luckily, I found this one lurking inside of Mr. Filches filing cabinet. It's the nearest we'll get to a real dementor."
"Now the spell I am about to teach you is one of the most advanced spells ever created." Lupin said. "It's above the OWL standard."
"It is very hard to master." He continued. "But I suspect you will get it in a few tries. Now I want you to repeat after me, Expecto Patronum."
"Expecto Patronum." Me and Harry said.
"Very good." Lupin said. "Now, this spell is a very positive force. For it to work, you need to think of a memory. Not just any memory, but one that makes you happy."
"Sounds fair." I responded.
"Good, now how about we give it a try." Lupin replied.
Harry stepped up first, and Lupin grasped the corners of the box. The kid came off and a dementor slowly rose from within. The Dementor slowly reached out with one of its honey hands towards Harry.
"Expecto Patronum! Expecto Patronum! Expecto..."
Harry then face planted onto the floor and Lupin jumped in front of the Boggart, immediately pushing it back into the trunk.
"Harry mate." I said. "You all right?"
"Dandy." He said clutching his head.
"Here, Harry." Lupin said, pulling him up and handing him a bar of chocolate. "I didn't expect you to do it the first time. I would have been astounded if you did."
A/N: Hold my firewhiskey
"Mind if I give it a go?" I asked as Lupin nodded.
Before Lupin swung open the box, I began to think about all of my happy memories.
Receiving my Hogwarts Letter
Meeting Hermione in Diagon Alley
Adopting Gracie
Meeting Harry and Ron
Breaking Harry out of the Dursley's before second year
Me and Hermione in Hogsmeade
Lupin swung open the box, and as the dementor came out, I shouted,
"EXPECTO PATRONUM!"
A light came out of my wand and an eagle flooded out of the top, pushing the dementor back into the box.
"Well I'll be." Lupin said. "You managed to conjure a corporeal Patronus."
"A what?" I asked.
"A corporeal Patronus is a Patronus taking the form of a certain animal. It would chase down dementors and keep them at bay. It's the most powerful form of the Patronus charm, and only really powerful wizards can perform it." Lupin explained. "Yet you managed to conjure it in your third year! You really are as brilliant as your mother Y/N."
"You knew my mum?" I asked.
"I was very good friends with her, as well as your father." Lupin replied. "One of the brightest witches of her year, along with Lily Evans."
"My mum." Harry responded.
"That's correct Harry." Lupin said. "If you don't mind me asking Y/N, what was your memory."
"I had a lot. But the most happiest I've felt was going to Hogsmeade with Hermione." I said while blushing.
"Ah yes, love can be a very powerful memory."
"W-well, y-yeah I guess." I stuttered.
Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Harry smirking in my direction.
We kept on practicing the Patronus charm the rest of the evening. It was amazing seeing an eagle flood out of my wand whenever I conjured the charm.
Harry almost conjured the charm several times, but with no luck. I know he'll be able to master the charm soon however.
After the private lesson, me and Harry made our way back to the Common Room.
