Chapter 23 - The Diary and The Heartbreak

Y/Ns POV

That night, I couldn't sleep. The note from my secret admirer, plus the thought of who the Heir of Slytherin could be was keeping me up.

My secret admirer sounded really nice. I wonder who it could be?

I swear, I've seen that handwriting before.

After a few hours of getting absolutely no sleep, I decided to go to the common room to pass some time and tire myself out. What I wasn't expecting, was to find Harry sitting at a table, also awake.

"Harry? Why are you still awake?" I asked.

"I'm trying to figure out this diary." He replied.

Of course it's the damn diary, he's been practically snogging it for weeks.

"What are you doing up?" He asked.

"Couldn't sleep." I replied. "You want me to help?"

"That would be great, thanks."

After about forty minutes of us trying different things to make the diary reveal itself, Harry finally had an idea.

He grabbed a quill and put the tip onto the page.

Harry wrote, 'My name is Harry Potter.' onto the paper. The words faded away quickly and were replaced with new words.

'Hello Harry Potter. My name is Tom Riddle. Who else is with you?'

Harry gave the quill to me as I went to write my name.

'My name is Y/N L/N' i wrote onto the paper.

'How did you come across my diary?'

'I found it in Moaning Myrtles bathroom, in a sink' Harry wrote.

'Lucky that I recorded my memories in some more lasting way than ink. But I always knew that there would be those who would not want this diary read.'

'What do you mean by that?' I wrote.

'I mean this diary holds memories of terrible things. Things that were covered up. Things that happened at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.'

Oh s*it

'Do you know anything about the Chamber of Secrets?'

'Of course I know about the Chamber of Secrets. In my day, they told us it was a legend, that it did not exist. But this was a lie. In my fifth year, the Chamber was opened and the monster attacked several students, finally killing one. I had caught the person who opened the Chamber and he was expelled. But the Headmaster, Professor Dippet, ashamed that such a thing had happened at Hogwarts, forbade me to tell the truth. A story was given out that the girl had died in a freak accident. They gave me a nice, shiny, engraved trophy for my troubles and warned me to keep my mouth shut. But I knew it would happen again. The monster lived on, and the one who had the power to release it was not imprisoned.'

'It's happening again now. There have been some attacks and nobody knows who's behind them. Who was it last time?'

'I can't tell you, but how about I show you?'

How the hell is he going to show us?

My question was answered when the pages of the book began to blow as if a heavy gust of wind came into the room. The book stopped halfway through June. The middle of the diary began to glow and suddenly, both me and Harry were pulled right into the the book, literally.

Harry's POV

Y/N and I landed hard on some stone floors. We looked around and noticed that we were in Hogwarts. Dumbledores office to be exact. Although it wasn't his office, and everything was in black and white. The office was now occupied by an older wizard who was quickly reading a letter lit up by a dim candlelight.

"Sorry sir." Y/N said. "We didn't mean to interrupt."

The man didn't even look up, or even acknowledge our presence. Y/N walked up to the wizard and snapped his fingers in front on his head. No reaction.

"What are we doing in Dumbledores office?" I asked.

"I'm asking myself the same question." Y/N replied.

All of a sudden, we heard a knock at the door that startled the both of us.

"Enter." The old wizard said.

A boy, who looked like he was in his 5th or 6th year, entered the office wearing a prefects badge.

"Ah, Riddle." The elderly wizard said.

"You wanted to see me, Professor Dippet?" Riddle asked.

"Sit down. I have been reading the letter you sent me."

"We should probably listen in." Y/N said.

"My dear boy, I cannot possibly let you stay at school during the summer. Surely you want to go home for the holidays?" Dippet asked.

"No i'd much rather stay at Hogwarts then go back to that....that."

"You live in a Muggle orphanage during the holidays, I believe?" Dippet asked.

"Yes, sir."

"You are Muggleborn?"

"Halfblood, sir." Riddle replied. "Muggle father, witch mother."

"And both of your parents....?"

"My mother died just before I was born, sir. They told me at the orphanage she lived long enough to name me: Tom, after my father, Marvolo, after my grandfather."

"The thing is Tom, special arrangements have been made for you, but in the current circumstances..."

"You mean all the attack sir?" Riddle asked.

"Precisely. My dear boy, you must see how foolish it would be of me to allow you to remain at the castle when term ends. Particularly in the light of the recent tragedy....the death of that poor little girl...you will be by far safer at your orphanage. As a matter of fact, the Ministry of Magic is even now talking about closing down the school. We are no near locating the....ahem, source of all this unpleasantness...."

"Sir, if the person was caught....if it all stopped.."

"What do you mean? Riddle, do you mean you know something about these attacks?"

"No, sir."

"You may go, Tom..."

Tom left the room and me and Y/N followed him quickly, going down the spiral staircase. He stopped at the bottom, making us stop behind him.

"What are you doing out this late, Tom?"

We turned around to come face to face with a much younger, Albus Dumbledore.

"I had to see the headmaster, sir." Tom replied.

"Well hurry off to bed. Best not to roam the corridors these days. Not since...." Dumbledore trailed off.

Riddle continued to stroll off with me and Y/N following close behind him. We followed him down to the dungeons into the classroom that Snape teaches us potions in. Tom then closed the door slightly so he could peer through the crack. Probably doing so to keep a lookout for anyone.

Eventually, Riddle had opened the door wide and slowly walked out.

Once again, we continued to follow him downstairs into a corridor. We entered another room and heard a familiar voice whispering to whatever was inside of the room.

"Cmon....gotta get yeh outta here....cmon now.....in the box..."

Hagrid?

"Evening Rubeus." Riddle said sharply.

Hagrid was standing next to a box inside of a small broom cupboard.

"What're yeh doin down here, Tom?" Hagrid asked.

"It's all over. I'm going to turn you in, Rubeus. They're talking about closing down Hogwarts if the attacks don't stop." Tom said.

"What d'yeh..."

"I don't think you meant to kill anyone. But monsters don't make good pets. I suppose you let it out for exercise and-"

"It never killed no one!" Hagrid exclaimed.

"Come on, Rubeus. The dead girls parents will be here tomorrow. The least Hogwarts can do is make sure that the thing that killed their daughter is slaughtered...."

"It wasn' him!" Hagrid shouted. "He wouldn! He never!"

"Stand aside Rubeus!" Riddle said while drawing his wand. "Cistem Aperio!"

The box had burst open and all of a sudden, a large eight legged creature scurried out of it. It looked like a giant spider. The thing jumped at Tom with its many pincers, and knocked him over, running out of the corridor.

Riddle went to make chase after the creature, but was once again, knocked to the floor after Hagrid jumped onto him.

"Noooooo!" Hagrid yelled.

The world around us began to spin around and all of a sudden, we landed back in our seats we had sat in before we were pulled into the diary.

Y/Ns POV

I was still trying to process what the hell had happened to us.

"What the f*ck was that!" I exclaimed.

"I can't believe it." Harry said. "It was Hagrid..... Hagrid opened the Chamber of Secrets fifty years ago."

"It can't be." I said.

The next morning, Harry bombarded Ron about the events of what happened to us last night.

"It was Hagrid, Ron! Hagrid opened the Chamber of Secrets fifty years ago." He said quickly.

"You can't make accusations like that." Ron said slightly annoyed.

"We saw it, the diary showed us!" Harry exclaimed.

"We should get Hermione and talk about this more." I suggested.

"It can't be Hagrid." Hermione exclaimed. "It just can't be."

We had met up with Hermione a few minutes later and were discussing what we had both seen had in the diary.

"We don't even know this Tom Riddle." Ron said. "He could be a dirty, little snitch."

"For once, Ron is probably right." I said.

"Hey!"

"I don't trust him one bit." I said ignoring Ron's remark. "And I still have a hard time believing it. Hagrid cares for magical creatures, why would he want to set them on people."

"The monster killed somebody." Harry said. "What would any of us have done."

"Maybe kill it ourselves?" I suggested.

"Look, Hagrid's our friend." Hermione said. "Why don't we just go and ask him".

"That'll be a cheerful visit!" Ron exclaimed. "Hello, Hagrid! Tell me, have you been setting anything mad and hairy loose in the castle lately?"

"Mad and 'airy." A voice boomed. "You wouldn't be talking about me now, would ya?" Hagrid came from behind us, holding something in his hands.

"No!" We all said in unison.

"What do you have there Hagrid?" I asked.

"Flesh-Eatin' Slug Repellent. For the Mandrakes, ya know. According' to Professor Sprout l, they've still got a bit o' growing up to do. But, once their acne's cleared up, we'll be able to chop and stew 'em, and then we'll get those people down at the hospital Un-petrified. In the meantime, though, you four best be lookin' after yourselves. All right? Hmm."

It was now nearing the Easter Holidays. The weeks before have been surprisingly well for our quartet. There had been no attacks ever since the ones on Justin and nearly Headless Nick, which lead people to believe that the Heir of Slytherin had retired.

Now that it was the Easter Holidays, all of the second years had to make choices that would greatly define our futures. Hermione like usual, was taking this extremely seriously.

"This could affect our whole future!" Hermione exclaimed while throwing her hands around.

"I just want to give up Potions." Harry said.

"We can't unfortunately." I said.

"We keep all of our old subjects." Ron continued. "Or I'd have ditched Defense Against the Dark Arts."

After about 30 minutes of deciding what we were going to take, we were finally done. Hermione had decided to take every subject. I have no idea how the hell she's going to pull that off, but I'm not one to ask questions. I had decided to take Care of Magical Creatures, Divination, and Arithmancy.

Ron and Harry didn't know what to choose, so they picked Divination and Care of Magical Creatures as well.

Today, we were preparing for our next Quidditch match against Hufflepuff.

Wood had insisted that we use up all of our free time to practice, leaving us with no time to do anything else. Wood just kept training us harder and harder, not even caring about our own social lives.

Bastard.

After our training session, Harry and I made our way to the common room to meet up with Ron and Hermione. We were almost there until a pair of footsteps ran towards us as Neville made his presence known.

"Harry- I don't know who did it, but you'd better come quick!" Neville said.

Neville had led us to the Boys Dormitories, with Hermione and Ron following.

"What's going on?" Hermione asked.

"I don't know." I said. "Follow us."

We made it up to the dormitories where Harry's room was in a complete disarray. Things were were everywhere and parchment and books were all over the place.

"It had to be a Gryffindor." Hermione deduced.

"Nobody else knows the password, unless it wasn't a student." I said. "Whoever it was, they had to have been looking for something."

"And they found it." Harry said. "Tom Riddle's diary is gone."

Well at least he can stop being obsessed with that f*cking diary.

The next day was the Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff Quidditch match. We were currently making our way to the pitch with Ron and Hermione until Harry tensed up.

"VOICE!" Harry screamed causing multiple students to turn their heads over to us.

"What?" Hermione asked running her ears.

"I heard the voice again...." Harry replied.

"I think I've just understood something!" Hermione exclaimed. "I've got to go to the library!"

A/N: No don't go to the library

"Wait!" I said making her stop. " Every time Harry hears that voice, someone or something turns up petrified. I really don't want you to go alone."

"I can handle myself." She replied with a stern look. "Besides, you have a match soon."

"Wood can find a reserve." I said. "I just don't want anything to happen to you."

Hermione then pulled me into a tight hug and kissed my cheek.

"I'll be fine." She said while turning and running off to the library.

"She'll be ok mate." Harry assured me.

"I hope so."

We entered the changing rooms and grabbed our brooms. Wood was scanning the field getting a feel for the winds while Hufflepuff was discussing strategies.

I was about to take off on my broom until Mum marched onto the field with an enormous megaphone.

"The match has been cancelled!" She announced.

"You can't cancel Quidditch!" Wood said angrily.

Well, she just did.

"Silence, Wood. You and your teammates will go to Gryffindor Tower." Mum said sternly before turning her attention to me, Harry, and Ron. "L/N, Potter, Weasley you come with me, there's something the three of you will see."

"Shouldn't Hermione come too Mum?" I asked. "We are a group after all."

She didn't say anything, but I could see an bit of sadness on her face.

This better not be what I think it is.

She continued to lead us along the corridors and into the hospital wing.

"This will come as a quite a shock. There has been another attack.......another double attack." She warned.

No

This can't happen

Not to her!

She opened the door and the first thing I saw were two new victims frozen on the beds.

Penelope Clearwater, a Ravenclaw prefect

And.

Hermione Granger

"HERMIONE!!" I yelled while sprinting over to her bed. "No, no, no, no."

I started to cry my eyes out while holding her frozen hand in mine.

Harry put his hand on my shoulder in comfort as we all looked at Hermione in sadness.

I was absolutely traumatized. Hermione was petrified. Knowing that I have a crush on her only made matters worse.

This is all my fault. I even promised I would protect her.

"This is all my fault." I said.

"Y/N, it's not your fault." Mum said. "You couldn't have knownโ€”-."

"IT IS MY FAULT." I yelled. "I PROMISED THAT I WOULD PROTECT HER WITH MY LIFE AND I FAILED. I FUCKING FAILED."

"And now s-she's petrified and it's because of me." I sobbed. "I'm sorry for yelling guys. I c-care about her so much."

"Its quite alright Y/N." Mum said. "I know you care about Miss Granger a great deal."

She then turned to Harry and Ron. "Let's give them a moment alone."

Harry and Ron gave me sympathetic looks and walked out with Mum.

"I'm so sorry Mione, I'm so sorry." I whispered while holding her hand.

Then I decided to admit something.

"I-I really like you Hermione, a-as in more than a friend. I c-care so much about you. I'm so sorry."

I brushed a stray hair out of her face and kissed her temple.

I then walked out of the hospital wing to meet the others and go back to Gryffindor tower.

Not even saying a single word on the way back.

When we arrived back at Gryffindor Tower. I ran up to the dormitories and slammed the door behind me. Mum was talking to the other Gryffindors about new rules in regards to the recent attacks but I didn't care.

I jumped onto my bed and started to cry.
