Chapter 14 - The End of The First Year
Y/Ns POV
I opened my eyes to wake up to the sound of birds chirping and voices everywhere. That's when I realized I was in a hospital bed.
As I slowly started to regain awareness, I noticed that there were lots presents and candy that were sitting next to me. To my right, I noticed that Harry was also in a hospital bed and was resting peacefully.
How many days have I been in here?
"Good afternoon, Y/N." A voice to my left startled me. It was Professor Dumbledore.
I stared at him for a few seconds until I realized.
"Professor! The Stone! It was Quirrell! He's got the stone! Professor we have to-"
"Calm yourself dear boy, you are a little behind the times," said the Professor. "Quirrell does not have the Stone."
"What! Then who does? Professor I-"
"Y/N, please calm yourself, or Madam Pomfrey will have me thrown out, I expect Harry will have a similar situation to his too and I'd rather not be removed twice." He said while smiling.
I calmed down and looked over to the presents and candy right next to me.
"Tokens from your friends and admirers," Dumbledore said. "What happened in the dungeons between you, Harry, and Professor Quirrell is a complete secret, so naturally, the whole school knows! I believe your friends Misters Fred and George Weasley were responsible for trying to send you a toilet seat. No doubt they thought it would amuse you. Madam Pomfrey, however, felt it might not be very hygienic, and confiscated it."
"Sir, how long have I been here?" I asked.
"Three days. Mr. Ronald Weasley and Miss Granger will be most relieved you have come around. Miss Granger especially, they have been extremely worried, as for Harry, they'll be delighted, he should be ready to awake at any moment." He said while looking over to Harry.
"But Professor, the Stone—"
"I see you are not to be distracted. Very well. The Stone. Professor Quirrell did not manage to take it from you. I arrived in time to prevent that, although you were both doing well on your own, I must say."
Damn right we did.
"You got there? You received our owl?"
"We must have crossed in midair. No sooner had I reached London then it became clear to me that the place I should be was the one I had just left. I arrived just in time to pull Quirrell off of you and Harry." He said.
"Thank God for that, I wasn't sure if we would have been able to keep him off the Stone."
"You nearly didn't." He replied.
"Sir?"
"The effort nearly killed you both, but you both have suffered. For one terrible moment there, I was afraid I would have been too late. As for the Stone, it has been destroyed."
"Destroyed?" I said in disbelief. "But your friend—Nicholas Flamel"
"Oh you know about Nicholas?" Dumbledore said sounding quite ecstatic. "You did the thing properly, didn't you? Well, Nicholas and I have had a little chat, and agreed it's all for the best."
"But that means he and his wife will die, won't they?" I asked.
"They have enough elixir stored to set their affairs in order and then yes, they will die." He said. "To one as young as you, I'm sure it seems incredible, but to Nicholas and Perenelle, it really is like going to bed after a very, very, long day. After all, to the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure. You know, the Stone was really not such a wonderful thing. As much money and life as you could want! The two things most human beings would choose above all—the trouble is, humans do have a knack of choosing precisely those things that are worse for them."
I nodded at the answer Dumbledore gave me, while also trying to process what he had just said. I should definitely ask him about the vision I had in the forest.
"Professor." I started. "There are some things I would like to know, if you can tell me that is. Things I'd like to know the truth about."
"The truth." Dumbledore sighed. "It is a beautiful and terrible thing, and should therefore be treated with great caution. However, I shall answer your questions unless I have a very good reason not to, in which case I beg you'll forgive me. I shall not of course lie."
Seems understandable enough.
"I had a vision of sorts when we were walking in the forbidden forest, the vision showed.....Voldemort killing my mother." I said. "Is there any reason as to why I couldn't remember it before?"
Dumbledore than sighed very deeply.
"The memory in which you have revealed was one that was hidden deep inside your mind. Your Uncle thought it would be best to keep the truth from you until you were old enough. Obviously that is not the case anymore."
"In the vision." I said "Voldemort told my mother to hand me over to him. Why would he want me in the first place?"
"Alas, the thing you ask, I can not tell you. You will know one day....put it aside in your mind for now Y/N. And I know you hate to hear this, when you are ready you will know."
That was pretty frustrating to hear. But I'm way too worn-out to argue with him.
"But why couldn't Quirrell touch me or Harry?" I asked
"Your mother died to save you." He said."Much like Harry's mother did for him. If there is one thing Voldemort cannot understand, it is love. He didn't realize that love as powerful as your mothers for you leaves it's own mark. While not in the form of a scar, to have loved one so deeply, even though the person who loved us is gone, will give us protection forever. It is in your very skin. Quirrell, full of hatred, greed, and ambition, shared his soul with Voldemort. This is why he could not touch you. It was agony to touch a person marked by something so good."
"There's something else I want to ask sir?" I asked.
"I'm all ears."
"How did I manage to get the stone out of the mirror?"
"Ah, now I'm glad you asked me that." He beamed. "You see, that was one of my more brilliant ideas, and between you and me, that's saying something. You see, the one who would be able to find the stone.....find it, but not use it.....would be able to get it, otherwise, they'd just see themselves making gold or drinking the Elixir of Life. My brain surprises me even sometimes." He said as we both laughed.
At that moment, Harry woke up. He jumped frantically and fired to get up. Dumbledore came to his side and proceeded to explain everything he had just explained to me.
"Ah! Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans!" He exclaimed. "I was unfortunate enough in my youth to come across a vomit flavored one, and since then I'm afraid I've rather lost my liking for them. But I think I'll stick with a nice toffee don't you?"
"I like your thinking Professor." I said laughing.
"He smiled and popped the golden-brown bean into his mouth. Then he choked and said, "Alas! Ear wax!"
Dumbledore then left the hospital wing so we could rest.
"We did it." I said to Harry.
"Yeah we did." He replied. "Although I was doing such a fine job on my own." He said in a smug tone.
"In your dreams Potter." I said while rolling my eyes and smiling.
———————————————————————————
Madam Pomfrey was a very nice lady, although she could be strict at times, especially when it came to visitors in her hospital wing.
"Just five minutes." Harry pleaded with her as we tried to let our friends come see us.
"Absolutely not." She replied.
"You let Professor Dumbledore in." I pointed out.
"Well that was quite different, that was the Headmaster, you need rest."
"But we are resting Madam Pomfrey." I replied. "We're laying down in our beds and everything."
"Oh very well." She compromised. "But five minutes only."
She then let Ron and Hermione in.
"Y/N, Harry!"
Hermione rushed in first and jumped right on top of me. It was quite painful, but it felt good at the same time.
"Oh Y/N, Harry we were sure you were going to——Dumbledore was so worried."
"The whole school is talking about it!" Ron said. "What really happened."
We then proceeded to explain everything that happened past when Hermione had left the dungeons. Quirrell, the mirror, The Stone, and Voldemort's head. Ron and Hermione payed close attention and when I mentioned what was under Quirrell's turban, she screamed.
"So the Stones gone?" Ron said. "Flamel's just going to die?"
"That's what I said to Dumbledore, but he replied with.... what was it again? Oh yes, death is but the next great adventure or something like that." I replied.
"I always knew he was off his rocker." Ron replied.
Hermione then explained everything that happened after she left us. How she took Ron to the medical wing and immediately sent an owl to Professor Dumbledore.
After talking with Hermione and Ron for awhile, Madam Pomfrey came hustling over.
"Is it alright if we can stay with them longer?" Hermione asked.
"Absolutely not! They need rest." She replied firmly.
"Please?" Hermione asked again.
"I am resting Madam Pomfrey, I think having my best friends here would help me." I said while Hermione beamed.
"I agree." Harry followed up.
"Oh all right." She said. "But I want you two to get some rest you've been through a terrible ordeal."
"Yes ma'am." I replied.
We spent the entire rest of the day just talking and laughing, enjoying the last day we had before we were to go home on the Hogwarts Express tomorrow. With all the Philosophers Stone work, I managed to forget we had to go home. Summer is going to be a b*tch.
Ron eventually left when nightfall came, but Hermione stayed behind, now struggling to stay awake in the chair besides my bed.
"Hey Mione." I said. "Why don't you come into the bed? I'm no expert, but I'm sure it's more comfortable then a chair."
"Errmmm.......okay......" she replied. I lifted the covers for her to slip under and made some room. She climbed into the bed and snuggled up next to me.
It's a good thing it's dark or else she'd see my massive blush.
"Good night Y/N." She said.
"Good night Mione." I replied back as we drifted off to sleep.
Hermione's POV
I woke up the next morning still snuggled up to Y/N. I have to admit, he looks so cute when he is asleep. I continued to cuddle into his chest for a few more minutes until it was time to wake him up.
"Morning Mione." He said groggily. "Isn't the feast today?"
"The feast starts in 30 minutes." I said. "We need to get ready."
We then woke up Harry so he could come as well, he looked very confused at first as to why I was here, but after a few seconds, he had a big smirk on his face which made us blush furiously.
We took turns changing into our robes and after we were changed, I grabbed Y/Ns hand and the three of us made our way to the Great Hall.
As we made our way in, Professor McGonagall spotted us coming in and smiled. Me and Y/N sat next to each other and Harry went to sit beside Ron.
Professor McGonagall then clinked her spoon to her glass and the crowd went silent. Dumbledore rose from his seat and began to speak.
"Another year gone!" He said. "And now as I understand it, the house cup needs to be awarded and the points stand thus.
In fourth place: Gryffindor, with 312 points!
In third place, Hufflepuff, with 352 points!
In second place, Ravenclaw with 476 points!
And in first place, with 522 points, Slytherin House!
Nobody cheered except for the Slytherins. I could see from the table that Malfoy shot a mean look at us and made it his own personal business to be louder than anyone. It was truly a sickening sight.
I was a bit upset but all of that was washed away as Y/N put his arm around me, putting me in a much better mood.
"Yes, well done, Slytherin, well done." Dumbledore said. However recent events have been taken into account and I have a few last minute points to award.
The room then went silent, the Slytherins smiles faded a little.
Y/Ns POV
So there is a chance Slytherin may not win the house cup? That would be nice. Anything to wipe the smirk off Malfoy's stupid face.
"Ahem, let me see, yes." Dumbledore began.
"First to Mr. Ronald Weasley." Ron looked up at the headmaster to see what he had to say.
"For the best played game of chess Hogwarts has seen in many years, I award Gryffindor house, 50 points!"
The Gryffindors cheers grew louder. Percy could be heard telling the other prefects, My brother, you know, my youngest brother! Got past McGonagall's giant chess set!"
The room then went silent again.
"Second to Miss Hermione Granger...for the use of cool logic in the face of fire, I award Gryffindor house, 50 points!"
Hermione then buried her face in her arms, I smiled and encaved her in a hug which she accepted. Gryffindors cheers were getting louder and louder. We were now one hundred points up.
"Third to Mr. Harry Potter." The room went dead silent at the mention of Harry's name. "For pure nerve and outstanding courage, I award Gryffindor house, 60 points!"
More cheers were coming as people were congratulating Harry. Once again, the room became quiet as Dumbledore continued his speech.
"Fourth to Mr. Y/N L/N...for showing immense fearlessness and bravery in the face of impeccable odds, I award Gryffindor House, 50 points!"
The cheers became deafening at the sound of my name being announced. Hermione gave me another hug, which I happily returned and Harry and Ron ruffled my hair a bit.
We were now tied with Slytherin.
Dumbledore raised his hand as the room fell silent. Could we actually make a comeback?
"There are all kinds of courage." Said the headmaster. "It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends. I therefore award ten points to Mr. Neville Longbottom."
Anyone who was not in the Great Hall right now, must have thought that there was an explosion that had just taken place. Me, Harry, Ron and Hermione exploded with joy and cheered with the other Gryffindors. I don't think Neville had ever won a point for Gryffindor until today, and he was the one who got us the cup.
"Which means." Dumbledore said. "We need a little change in decoration."
With the clap of his hands, the banners flying above us changed from green and silver to red and yellow. From a distance, I could see Malfoy looking very pale and horrified. Snape was shaking hands with Mum with a forced smile.
This has to be the best night ever.
———————————————————————————
The next day our exam results came in. Me and Hermione had the best grades out of all the first years. Harry and Ron even passed with good marks. Neville's Herbology grade made up for his abysmal Potions one.
Later, our trunks were all packed, the closets were empty, and we were all ready to leave. Gracie was sitting on my shoulder as we made our way to the train. Harry stayed around for a bit to talk to Hagrid, while I went to go talk to my godmother.
"I'm really impressed with you Y/N." She told me with a smile as she stroked Gracies fur. "You really are your parents child."
"Thanks mum." I replied smiling back.
She then pulled something out of her pocket and put it into my palm. It was a picture of my parents, but they were joined by four other people, a woman with red hair, a man who looked the splitting image of Harry, a man with curly black hair, and a man with scars on his face. The picture was enchanted so it could move around. The group looked really happy.
"Those are your parents, along with Harry's and all of their friends." She said. "Oh, it must be time for you to go home. Enjoy your summer." She said.
I then bid my godmother goodbye and made it onto the train. Harry joined us after his talk with Hagrid.
"Feels strange to be going home doesn't it?" Hermione asked as we moved into a compartment.
"I'm not going home. Not really." Harry responded sadly.
"Ohhh right, those muggles you live with." I replied. "Just send a letter this summer and we'll come break you out."
"I look forward to it." Harry replied smiling.
The rest of the train ride, we spent time talking about what we were going to do over the summer. Ron and Harry were cheering that they passed their exams. Eventually, Hermione fell asleep on my shoulder. The boys snickered as they watched my face go beet red. Eventually I fell asleep until we got to Kings Cross.
When we reached the station, Gracie moved back onto my shoulder, waking me and Hermione up in the process. We exited the train and went through the barrier.
We had said our goodbyes to multiple people as the Weasley's came towards us. Before Ron took off with his family, he asked us to come to his house and stay some time over the summer. I'm looking forward to it already, that is if Uncle Thomas even let's me go.
Me and Harry walked over to Mrs Weasley and thanked her for the Christmas gifts before they left. Eventually, Harry left with the Dursley's. They really don't look like pleasant people, and his cousin also needs to lose some weight.
After that it was just me and Hermione, I was then dragged by the hand towards her family as they arrived.
"Mum, Dad, this is Y/N." She said as she introduced me. I just nodded and smiled.
"So this must be the boy you speak so fondly about." Her mother said sweetly.
"Mummmm." Hermione groaned as her dad just chuckled
"I'm Monica Granger, and this is my husband Wendall." Monica said smiling.
"It's nice to meet you." Wendall said with a smile as he shook my hand. "Hermione's told us so much about you."
"All good things I hope." I said.
"Oh they were nothing but good!" Wendall said.
I talked with Hermione's parents for a bit more until it was time for them to go. They seemed really nice.
Hermione then hugged me one last time before going.
"Will you write to me this summer?" She asked shyly.
"Absolutely!" I exclaimed. "Every day if you want me to."
"That would be amazing!" She said beaming. "I'm going to miss you Y/N, have a good summer."
"You too Mione." I replied.
She hugged me one last time before leaving with her parents.
I stood there looking into the distance until I felt a hand on my shoulder.
"Had a good year?" The voice of my Uncle asked me.
"Oh yes." I replied.
Next year can't come soon enough.
