Chapter 12 - Down the Trapdoor

Y/Ns POV

Examination day, a wonderful day where all the first years hard work throughout the year is tested upon hours and hours of testing in the hot, sweltering classrooms.

When the day came, so did the typical nervous attitude from most students as well as the anxiety of feeling like they didn't study enough or even at all.

It's been a while since me and Harry's encounter with Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest and on top of exam nerves, we both were pretty anxious and expecting Voldemort to come through the door at any minute.

I was still coming to terms on the fact that Voldemort actually killed my mother and quite possibly my father as well. The fact that I actually remembered something as horrifying as that while in the presence of the dark lord could not have been mere coincidence.

But I don't want to think about that, I just need to get through these damn exams.

True to Hermione's word, we were given Anti-Cheating quills for written examinations with practical examinations as well. Professor Flitwick called us up to see if we could make a pineapple tap dance across a desk. Professor McGonagall had us turn a mouse into a snuffbox and back again.

The worst exam came during potions, with Snape being the insufferable git that he is, watched us to try to brew a forgetfulness potion. He must have wanted me to fail, because he looked over at my potion to see I had done it perfectly and looked very upset.

The last exam came during History of Magic, which quite ironically the least looked forward to exam for all the students. All the questions were based off of old wizards and other crap about the wizarding world. As Professor Binns told us to put down our quills and roll up our parchment, me as well as other students found the need to cheer.

"That was far easier than I thought." Hermione said as the four of us left the classroom to go down to the Black Lake. "I needn't have learned about the 1637 Werewolf Code of Conduct or the uprising of Elfric the Eager."

"Can we please not talk about the bloody exam?" Ron asked. "It makes me ill to know I didn't answer it right."

"Hey Mione, what did you think about your potions for Snape's exam?" I asked her.

"I said don't!" Ron complained.

"You were talking about the history exam, not the others, mate." I said while Hermione giggled.

When we made it down to the Black Lake, we found Fred, George, and Lee Jordan trying to tickle the squids tentacles while we laid down by the trees.

Ron and Harry sat by one tree while stretching their legs out happily. Me and Hermione sat down by another tree next to each other. She pulled a book out and we both sat together reading out of the same book.

"No more studying!" Ron sighed with a smile. "You should look more cheerful Harry, we've got a week to find out how badly we have done, there's no need to worry yet."

Harry began to rub his forehead

"I wish I knew what this means!" He exclaimed angrily. "My scar keeps hurting- it's happened before, but never as often as this."

"You could go to Madam Pomfrey?" Hermione suggested.

"I'm not ill." Harry said. "I think it's a warning....it means danger is coming."

"Harry relax, Hermione's right, the stones safe as long as Dumbledore's around." Ron said. "We don't even have any proof Snape found out how to get past Fluffy. He nearly had his leg ripped off once, he's not going to do it again in a hurry."

"What about you Y/N?" Harry asked me, "I mean both of us stumble across Voldemort and we both get thrown into some sort of panic attack." "Do you think it's connected?"

He was right, it is definitely possible.

"I'm not sure." I sighed. "I'd prefer to not think about it now." "I just want to relax."

"At least somebody's not overreacting." Ron commented.

"I'm just confused as to why your Uncle lied to you all those years." Hermione said to me with concern.

"You and me both Mione." I said. "He's got lots to explain when I get home."

Harry still tried to explain what feeling he had to us, but we kept telling him to leave it alone and ignore it. Eventually, I zoned out to think about it as well. Hagrid said that only he and Dumbledore know how to get past Fluffy.....

Wait a minute.

Oh no.

Harry must have read my mind, because we both jumped up at the same time and ran down towards Hagrids hut.

Ron and Hermione looked at us with visible confusion as he had just woken up. "Where're you going?" He asked us.

"I've just thought of something." Harry said. "We've got to go and see Hagrid now."

"Why?" Hermione asked as she walked close to me.

"Don't you think it's a hit odd." Harry asked. "That what all Hagrid wants is a dragon more than anything else, and a stranger turns up who just so happens to have an egg in his pocket? How many people wander around with dragon eggs if it's against wizarding law?"

"if you put it like that, that sounds very suspicious." I said.

As we arrived at Hagrids wooden hut, Harry knocked on the door to be greeted by the man himself.

"Hello!" He greeted us. "Finish yer exams? Got time for a drink?"

"Yes, please." Ron said.

"As much as I would love to Hagrid, we can't." I said as Harry stepped in front of us.

"We're in a hurry Hagrid and I've got to ask you something. You know that night you won Norbert? What did the stranger who played cards with you look like?"

"Dunno." He said. "He wouldn't take his cloak off. Lot of funny folk in the Hogs Head. Might have been a dragon dealer, mightn' he?" Never saw his face, he just kept his hood up."

"What did you talk to him about Hagrid?" I asked. "Anything about Hogwarts at all?"

"Mighta come up." Hagrid continued. "Yeah.....he asked what I did and I told 'im I was groundskeeper here. He asked about the sort of creature I look after....so I told him.....and I said I always wanted a dragon.....and then.... I can't remember to well, cause he kept buying me drinks. Then he said he had the dragon egg and we could play cards for it if I wanted. So I told him, after Fluffy, a dragon would be easy."

"And did he- did he seem interested in Fluffy?" Harry asked calmly.

"Well—yeah—how many three headed dogs d'yeh meet, even around Hogwarts?" Hagrid answered. "So I told him, Fluffy's a piece of cake if yeh know how to calm him down, just play him a bit o' music and he'll go straight ter sleep."

Oh Hagrid, what did you do?

He suddenly made a face of regret "I shouldn't have told ya that!" He yelled. "Forget I said that! Hey where yah going?"

We all ran back off to the castle in hopes we were not too late.

Hermione's POV

"We've got to get to Dumbledore." Harry said. "Hagrid told that stranger how to get past Fluffy, and it was either Snape or Voldemort under the cloak."

"Hagrid was drunk, of course it would be easy to get it out of him." Ron said.

"Hopefully Dumbledore believes us." I replied.

"He would definitely know, he's got to, right?" Asked Y/N

"We'll just have to-" Harry said before a voice called out to us.

"What are you four doing inside?" Professor McGonagall called out to us.

"We want to see Professor Dumbledore." I responded honestly.

"It's sort of secret." Harry said.

Probably not the best thing say while she's glaring at us Harry.

"Professor Dumbledore left ten minutes ago." She said without a change of tone. "He received an urgent owl from the Ministry of Magic and flew off for London at once."

"But this is important."

"Something you have to say is more important than the Ministry of Magic, Potter?" She asked.

I mean it pretty much is.

"Mum, this is more important because it's about the Philosophers Stone." Y/N spoke up at once

Professor McGonagall looked very shocked to hear that we knew about the stone.

"How do you know-" she said spluttering.

"We think that someone is trying to steal the stone." Y/N responded. "We have to talk to Professor Dumbledore."

She eyed Y/N with a mix of shock as well as suspicion.

"Professor Dumbledore will be back tomorrow." She said in a tone that meant final. "I don't know how you know about the stone, but rest assured it is well too protected so no one can possibly steal it."

"But Professor-" Harry said.

"Potter, I know what I'm talking about," she said shortly. "I suggest you all go outside and enjoy the sunset." She said as she walked off.

Y/Ns POV

"Snape's going through the trapdoor tonight." Harry said once we knew Mum was not within earshot. "He's found out everything he needs, and now he's got Dumbledore out of the way. He sent that note, I bet the Ministry of Magic will get a real shock when Dumbledore shows up."

"Sounds good, but what can we-"

"Good afternoon." Said a familiar voice in the same monotone style.

Speak of the freaking devil.

"You shouldn't be inside on a day like this." He said with an odd twisted smile.

"We were-" Harry began, without even knowing what he was going to say.

"You'll want to be more careful." Snape said. "Hanging around like this, people will think you're up to something. And Gryffindor really can't afford to lose more points can it?"

Harry stood silently as he continued to stare.

"Be warned Potter." Snape said. "Any more nighttime wanderings and I will personally make sure that you are expelled. Good day to you." He then turned around and went on his way.

"Here's what we're going to do, " Harry whispered urgently. "One of us has to keep an eye on Snape—wait outside the staff room and follow if he leaves it." He said pointing to us. "You'd better do that."

"Great idea." Ron said "you two can pretend to be waiting for Professor Flitwick, you know." He then put on a high voice, "Oh Professor Flitwick, I'm so worried, I think I got question thirteen B wrong."

"Shut up Ronald." Me and Hermione said in unison which caused us to both blush.

"And we better stay outside the third floor corridor," Harry told Ron. "Come on."

Me and Hermione went to the staff room and luckily, Snape was there, he came out to ask what we were doing, so we told him we were waiting for Flitwick. Snape decided to go get him so we decided to go back to the common room as this plan was not going to work.

"We're sorry Harry!" Hermione cried. "Snape came out and asked what we were doing, so I said we were waiting for Flitwick, and Snape went to go get him, and we've only just got away, we don't know where Snape went."

"Well that's it then, isn't it?" Harry said.

"I'm going out of here tonight and I'm going to try to get the stone first."

"No way!" I exclaimed

"Your mad!" Said Ron.

"You can't!" Hermione said. "You'll be expelled!"

"SO WHAT" Harry shouted. "Don't you understand? If Snape gets ahold of the stone, Voldemort's coming back! Haven't you heard what it was like when he was trying to take over? There won't be a Hogwarts to get expelled from! He'll flatten it, or turn it into a school for the Dark Arts! Losing points doesn't matter anymore, can't you see? D'you think he'll leave you and your families alone if Gryffindor wins the house cup? If I get caught before I get the stone, we'll I'll just have to go back to the Dursley's and wait for Voldemort to find me there, it's only dying a bit later than I would have, because I'm never going to the dark side! I'm going down the trapdoor tonight and nothing you three say is going to stop me! Voldemort killed my parents remember?"

"He killed mine too Harry." I said with a frown as Hermione grabbed my hand and squeezed it.

"Sorry Y/N" he whispered to me sounding quite guilty.

"You're right Harry." Hermione said in a small voice.

"I'll use the invisibility cloak" Harry said. "It's just lucky I got it back."

"But will it cover all four of us?" I asked.

"All four of us?"

"Oh come off it, you don't think we'd let you go alone?" Ron said.

"Of course not," Hermione said briskly. "How do you think you'd get to the stone without us? I'd better go and look through my books, there must be something useful..."

"But if we get caught, you three will be expelled too."

"Not if I can help it," I said "Professor McGonagall is my godmother and she told me I got a hundred and twelve percent on her exam, there's no way in hell their throwing me out after that!" I said very proud of my exam results.

As the day went on, me and Hermione went through our list of books together, hoping to come across any enchantment we needed to break. Harry and Ron were both thinking on what we had to do.

Eventually, the common room emptied as people went up to bed.

"Better get the cloak." Ron muttered as Harry ran upstairs to our dormitory.

"How are we getting past Fluffy?" Hermione asked.

"I suppose we have to think of a way to play music." I replied.

Time to put the worst idea we've ever had into action.

"We'd better put the cloak on here, and make sure it covers all four of us if-"

"What are you doing?" Called a voice from the corner of the room. Neville appeared while clutching Trevor the Toad. He looked like one of those evil masterminds you see on the telly.

"Nothing, Neville, nothing." Harry said while stuffing the cloak behind his back.

"You're going out again." Neville said.

"No, no, no we're not. Why don't you go back to bed Neville?" Hermione suggested.

We're wasting so much time with this. Snape could be on his way to Fluffy right this second.

"You can't go out!" Neville cried. "You'll be caught again. Gryffindor will get into even more trouble."

"You don't understand." Harry said. "This is important."

Neville then decided to do something very desperate.

"I won't let you do it," he said while standing in front of the portrait hole. "I'll- I'll fight you."

"Whatever you say Nev." I said while stepping forward. Hermione then tugged me back hard with a sharp glare.

"Get away from the portrait hole and don't be an idiot!" Ron exploded.

"Don't call me an idiot! I don't think you should be breaking any more rules! And you were the ones who told me to stand up to people!"

"Yes but not to us." I said very irritated. "Just go to bed Neville."

He took a step forward raising his fists.

"Go on then, try and hit me. I'm ready."

"Do something." Harry whispered to Hermione.

"Neville," she said, I'm really, really sorry about this."

She then raised her wand.

"Petrificus Totalus!"

Nevilles entire body went rigid, his arms were snapped to his sides and his legs were the same way.

Hermione just put him in the full body bind.

"Oh Neville I'm so sorry."

"We had to Neville, no time to explain." Said Harry.

"You had that one coming Nev." I said

"You'll understand later Neville." Ron said while stepping over him.

"You're brilliant you know that?" I said to Hermione. "A bit scary, but brilliant." She responded with a shy smile as her cheeks went red.

As we made our way through the castle underneath the cloak, we noticed that all of the statues around us looked like exactly like Filches shadow. The sounds of the wind made it feel like Peeves was swooping on top of us.

At the foot of the stairs, we noticed Mrs Norris skulking near the top.

"Oh let's kick her just this once." Ron whispered in my ear but I shook my head. As much as I really don't like Mrs. Norris, we had to focus on the task at hand.

We didn't see anyone else until we reached the staircase to the third floor. Peeves was being a nuisance like usual and loosening the carpet so people could trip over it.

"Who's there?" He said suddenly as we climbed up to him.

"Know your there, even if I can't see you. Are you ghoulie or ghostie or wee student beastie?"

"Should I call Filch, I should, if something's a-creeping around unseen."

I then got a brilliant idea.

"Peeves." I said in a croaky whisper. "The bloody baron has his own reasons for being invisible."

Peeves fell out of the air in shock.

"So sorry your bloodiness, Mr. Baron, Sir." He said greasily. "My mistake, my mistake—I didn't see you—-of course I didn't, you're invisible—-forgive old Peevsie his little joke sir."

"I have business here tonight Peeves," I said. "Stay away from this place tonight."

"I will, sir, I most certainly will," Peeves said while rising in the air. "Hope your business goes well, Baron, I'll not bother you."

And he floated off.

"Brilliant Y/N!" Ron whispered as Hermione smiled and Harry nodded.

"Damn right I am." I whispered back.

We eventually made our way to the third floor corridor, and the door was already ajar.

"Well there you are." Harry said. "Snape's already gotten past Fluffy." He then turned to us. "If you want to go back, I don't blame you. You can take the cloak, I won't need it now."

"Don't be stupid." Ron said.

"We're coming." Hermione followed up

"Your stuck with us now Potter, we're in this together." I continued.

With that, Harry pushed the doors open, where we were greeted with low growls.

Fluffy was sound asleep and it didn't look like he could hear us.

"What's that at its feet?" Hermione asked.

"Looks like a harp." I said.

"Snape must have left it there." Ron said.

"It must wake up at the moment you stop playing." Harry said.

He then pulled out a small flute out of his pockets and began to play a tune. It wasn't all that great but Fluffy dropped down past the first note and continued to sleep.

"Keep playing." Ron whispered to Harry as we all silently made our way to the trapdoor, trying to not wake Fluffy up.

When we approached the door, Ron looked back up at Fluffy and then to the door again.

"I think we'll be able to pull the door open. Want to go first Hermione?" He asked.

"No i don't!" She replied.

"All right."

"What do you see?" I asked.

"Nothing, it's just all black, there's no way of climbing down, so we'll have to drop."

Harry then pointed to himself indicating that he wanted to go first.

"Give me the flute then, I'll keep him asleep." I said.

I grabbed the flute from Harry as he went to lower himself into the trapdoor. Before he could fully lower himself in, he looked at us and said, "if anything happens to me, don't follow. Go straight to the owlery and send Hedwig to Dumbledore. Alright."

"Right." We all said in unison.

Harry then let himself go down until we heard a thump.

"It's okay! It's a soft landing, you can jump!"

Ron then went first, then Hermione, then I went quickly after I stopped playing.

"What's this stuff?" Ron asked as I landed.

"Plant of sorts." I said. "It must be here to break our fall."

Hermione looked around the area. "We must be miles under the school."

"Lucky this plant is here." Ron said.

But we would not be so lucky a few seconds later, as the plant started to grab Ron's legs, Harry's arms, and my ankles.

Hermione managed to free herself and began to think of a way for us out of there.

"Stop moving!" She ordered. "I know what this is—it's Devils Snare!"

Imagine Y/N is between Ron and Harry

"Oh, I'm so glad we know what it's called. That's a great help." Ron said sarcastically.

"Ron shut up." I said.

"Shut up! I'm trying to remember a way to kill it!" Hermione yelled.

"Well we'd appreciate if you hurried up." Harry said while struggling to breathe.

"Devils Snare, Devils Snare....what did Professor Sprout say?" Hermione asked us.

"It likes the damp and dark!" I yelled.

"So light a fire!" Harry continued.

"Yes—of course—but there's no wood."

Ron was starting to come unglued at this point. "HAVE YOU GONE MAD, ARE YOU A WITCH OR NOT!"

"Oh right!" Hermione said while pulling out her wand and pointing it at the plant, she muttered a spell which resulted in a spark of fire coming out from the tip which made the plants burn and shrivel up. Which in turn caused us to drop down.

"Lucky you two pay attention in Herbology." Harry said to us.

"And lucky Harry doesn't lose his head in a crisis. There's no wood, honestly" Ron added. "Can you hear something?"

We all stopped to hear a soft noise coming from above us. A soft clinking noise.

Almost like keys.

"Do you think it's a ghost?" Ron asked.

"It sounds like keys?" I asked.

"No, maybe like wings?" Harry added.

We then looked to the front where we saw a door in front of us. Waiting to be opened.

We tried opening the door but I would not budge. Hermione even tried using Alohomora on it, but to no avail.

"Now what?" Ron asked.

"Those birds...they can't be here for decoration." Hermione said.

I looked up to see these so called birds flying around, while glittering.

Then it hit me.

"They're not birds!" I said. "They're keys! Winged keys! And I bet one of them is the key for that door!"

Ron looked at the lock on the door. "We're looking for a big old-fashioned key-probably silver, like the handle."

"Look!" Harry said while pointing in another direction. "Broomsticks! We've got to catch the key to the door!"

Harry went off to catch the key while I directed him, but they all zipped off quick before he had the chance to snag them.

"Harry I found it!" I yelled. "It's got bright blue wings and the feathers are all crumbled on one side!" When I looked up, Harry had grabbed the winged key and flew down.

"Good eye Y/N!" Harry said as he flew down.

I inserted the key into the keyhole and pushed the door open, revealing the next trap which looked like a giant version of wizards chess. We stood alongside the black pieces and faced the opposite white pieces.

"Now what do we do?" Harry asked.

"We play our way across the room?" I asked.

"Looks like it." Ron said with a smile.

Hermione's POV

"How will we do that?" I asked with a tense tone.

"I think," Ron said. "We're going to be chessmen." Ron then walked over to a knight piece on our side and reached out to it. The piece then suddenly came to life and turned to Ron.

"Do we—er—have to join you?" Ron asked. The knight nodded and turned to the rest of us.

"I suppose we take the place of four black pieces. Now don't be offended or anything. But I know none of you are that great at chess—"

"We're not offended" Harry said rather quickly. "Just tell us what we need to do."

"Well Harry, you take the place of the bishop, Hermione, you take the queen to the left of Y/N, and Y/N you take the king to my right.

For some reason as he said me and Y/Ns places, I began to blush.

"What about you?" Y/N asked.

"I'm going to be a knight." Ron replied.

We all took our place on the chessmen. Harry took the bishops side, I took the queens side, and Y/N took the kings side.

Ron took his spot and the game began. "White always plays first. Look."

The pieces came around and the game continued as we lost more and more pieces. Ron was thinking of his next move. Suddenly he perked up and said, Yes...it's the only way....I've got to be taken.

"NO!" We all yelled.

"That's chess!" Ron shouted. "You've got to make sacrifices! I make my move and she'll take me, that leaves you free to checkmate the king, Harry!"

"Ron are you f*cking mad!" Y/N yelled.

"There's got to be another way!" I added.

"Do you want to stop Snape or not!" He snapped. "If you don't hurry up he'll already have the stone!"

"Here I go now, don't hang around once you've won."

The piece and Ron moved towards the space near the queen, and just like he said, the queen made her move and crashed into Ron's piece, dropping him in the process.

I screamed as Y/N glared at the queen. Ron was knocked out cold as the queen dragged him to another side.

"Checkmate." Harry said as he made his move.

The white king took off his crown and threw it at his feet. We all dismounted our pieces and ran towards Ron.

"He's breathing." Y/N said as he checked his pulse.

"What do you reckons next?" Harry asked.

"We've had Sprout's, which was probably the Devils Snare." I said. "Flitwick must have charmed the keys.."

"Mum's was probably the giant chess trap." Y/N said.

"That leaves Quirrell's and Snape's."

We followed Harry, who opened up the next door and walked in to see a troll knocked out.

"Christ, this brings up bad memories." Y/N said.

We passed through the room and into another room with nothing but a table with seven different shaped bottles with different colors. When we stepped into the room, a purple flare sprang up behind us. At the same time, a black flame sprang up in front of us.

"Look!" Y/N said as he pointed to a paper in front of the potions. I grabbed it and read it to the boys.

Danger lies before you, while safety lies behind,

Two of us will help you, whichever you may find,

One among us seven will let you move ahead,

Another will transport the drinker back instead,

Two among our number hold only nettle wine,

Three of us are killers, waiting hidden in line,

Choose, unless you wish to stay here evermore,

To help you in your choice, we give you these clues four:

First, slyly the poison tries to hide,

You will always find some on nettles wines left side;

Second, different are those who stand at either end,

But if you move onwards, neither is your friend;

Third, as you see clearly, all are different size,

Neither dwarf nor giant holds death in their insides;

Fourth, the second left and the second on the right

Are twins once you taste then, though different at first sight.

"That's brilliant!" I said. "This isn't magic-it's logic-a puzzle! A lot of the greatest wizards haven't got an ounce of logic, they'd be stuck in here forever."

"In that case well solve it in a few minutes." Y/N said to me with a smile.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"You are the smartest person i know Mione, I believe in you." He said as I looked away and blushed.

"Seven bottles: three are poison; two are wine; one will get us through the black fire, and one through the purple fire."

"But do we know which to drink?"

"Give us a minute." Y/N said as he came over to me and we read the paper once more together. We looked at the bottles and discussed them to ourselves. Eventually, we stopped and looked over to Harry.

"Got it!" I said. "The smallest will get us through the black fire- towards the stone."

"The rounded bottle will get back through the purple flames." Y/N said. "But the thing is the rounded one has a couple of drops for one person. Hermione you should take it." He said as he turned to me.

"What?" I asked "but how will you two get out?"

"We'll figure it out. We were lucky once we can do it again." He said.

I began to shake and tears fell from my eyes as I hugged Harry quickly and then over to Y/N, who I hugged tightly. As we pulled apart, I kissed his cheek. Just like I did after Halloween.

"You both are great wizards, you know?" I said.

"Not as great as you, you're amazing, the brightest of our age." Y/N said with a weak smile.

"Me! I said. "Books and cleverness! There are more important things—friendship and bravery and—-oh please be careful."

Y/N gave me the potion to drink so I could leave the room as we let go of each other.

"You should go, before it wears off." He said.

Before I left, I engulfed Y/N in another tight hug. Before we pulled apart, he leaned forward and kissed my forehead. We both blushed as I backed up as I went into the fire.

As I went to get Ron to the hospital wing, I couldn't help but continue to worry for Harry and Y/N,

Y/N especially. He was really special in my books.

We spent a lot of time together throughout the year and I enjoyed his company very much.

I really do care for him so much and I hope he'll be safe for me.

Y/Ns POV

"You ready lover boy?" Harry said with a smirk as I was still blushing from me and Hermione's moment.

"Ready as I'll ever be mate." I replied as I passed the potion for the black fire. "Down the hatch."

When I gave the potion to Harry, he took a sip and passed it back to me. I did the same and threw the bottle to the side.

"Here goes nothing." I said as we passed through the fire.

As we came out of the flame, I braced myself as we both opened the door.

There was somebody there.

But the thing was, it wasn't Snape.

It wasn't even Voldemort.

It was f*cking Quirrell.
