THE DRAFT WAS commencing and Y/N surely expected Donovan to be selected. He was at his mom's new house that he bought them a couple of weeks ago and together they watched the event. Dua was not there as she was currently on her tour in London.

Kobe stopped by though. He sat with Y/N on the sofa as the programming went on. His grandparents were on the other sofa and Y/M/N had just come in with some water.

"Where do they have Don going?" Kobe asked as he ate some trail mix.

"CBS has him going 12 to the Pistons. SI...16 to the Bulls. NBA.com says 11 to the Hornets." Y/N replied.

He nodded. "You think LA will shock the world and take him at 2?"

"Hell nah. The talk throughout the locker room the last few months of the season was all about Ball coming. And the whole fanbase is expecting it."

"That kid looks all alright. His dad though..."

Y/N chuckled. He was talking about Lavar Ball, who had become notorious with the media and for the outlandish things he'd say.

"Hey, maybe Ball will be as good as Curry his first year." Y/N said jokingly.

Kobe scoffed. "I wasn't even as good as that. And Lavar better not put my name in his mouth or we'll have a problem."

The draft coverage continued and they began the selections. Washington guard, Markelle Fultz, went first to the 76ers. Sometime later, the Lakers presented their selection...

"With the second pick on the 2017 NBA Draft, the Los Angeles Lakers select...Lonzo Ball from UCLA!"

Y/N could hear the loud cheers through the broadcast. Every Lakers fan in attendance was jubilant and he assumed everybody watching was as well. The selection was a no-brainer at the time.

"Well..." Y/N pulled out his phone. "Gotta tweet something about this."

Kobe chuckled. "Crazy. Back in my day we'd just let things happen and keep it to ourselves. Now you kids have phones and have to say something or else it'd look off."

"You get it." Y/N replied with eyes still glued to his phone.

They kept watching the coverage. Teams selected their players and it reached the Charlotte Hornets at 11. They didn't select Mitchell and instead took Malik Monk from Kentucky.

It was the Detroit Pistons' turn. They ended up taking Luke Kennard from Duke University.

"Shit..." Y/N breathed out.

His grandmother heard him. "Cuida tu lenguaje, niño! (Watch your language, boy!)"

Y/N raised his hands and acted like he did nothing wrong.

Kobe pointed at the television. "Lucky number 13 is next. He'll be picked. I can feel it in my bones."

"Just because you were picked at 13 fifty years ago doesn't make it your lucky number." Y/N said.

"Ouch." Kobe said at the young man's attempt at an old man joke.

"Relax." Y/M/N told her son. "You were born the year he was drafted so that'd make you fifty."

"I know, Ma. It was an exaggeration. I was just calling him old."

The 13th pick belonged to the Denver Nuggets. The commissioner came on stage and announced the pick at the podium.

"With the thirteenth pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, the Denver Nuggets select...Donovan Mitchell from the University of Louisville!"

"Oh, my God!" Y/N let out an excited yell.

Y/M/N cheered along with them. Grandpa L/N applauded with Grandma L/N. The lady didn't really understand what was happening but knew it related to her grandson's career.

On the television, they saw Donovan hugging his mom, dad, and sister. He dapped up his agent and took the hat a staff member was handing him. The man went up on stage and shook hands with the commissioner.

"What did I tell you?" Kobe exclaimed at Y/N. "Lucky number 13! That spot is reserved for the greats!"

Y/N chuckled. "So me being picked at 2 doesn't make a great?"

"Still gotta prove it to me."

"Haha."

The young man checked his phone and was going to tweet about Donovan. Suddenly, he saw a post from Adrian Wojnarowski, a respected NBA insider.

Y/N must've missed it earlier. He realized it wasn't Denver that was going to have Mitchell and in reality, he was going to the Jazz.

"Don's not going to Denver." Y/N told Kobe. "Look, he's a Jazz. Or Jazz player. Jazzian? I could never figure out what they call themselves."

Kobe looked at his phone and saw the tweet. He let out a delighted laugh.

"And he was traded on draft night? Wow! He's just like me. Picked thirteenth and traded to, what I think, is a better team. Man...he WILL be great."

Y/N put his phone down. "All right, Kob', let's relax now. He hasn't played a single game. I can still cook him."

"Ima tell him you said that." Kobe chuckled. "Oh, man...that first Jazz v Lakers game is gonna be awesome."

THE PLAN FOR the song was for Hailee to be a part of the main vocals along with their feature, Florida Georgia Line, a country duo. Y/N was going to produce the beat and help write the lyrics.

Its title was going to be "Let Me Go". It was going to have a tropical house vibe to go with pop and country influences. They wanted the track to be a feel-good breakup song. That along with a catchy tune should garner lots of radio plays.

They've been working on it for a couple of weeks now. Y/N worked with the three on making the instrumental, using various instruments like a guitar to go along with the beat he was making. They even got input from Flordia Georgia Line on the lyrics.

During one session, Hailee and Y/N were in the studio. The two other men weren't there yet but were going to arrive sometime soon. The hooper was hearing the instrumental and modifying it a bit as the girl was looking over her journal.

"All right. This sounds a bit better." Y/N removed his headphones and looked at his friend. "Check it out."

Hailee put her book down and rolled her seat beside him. He pressed the button on his laptop and played the music.

Midway through, Hailee nodded and gave an impressed look.

"Does sound cleaner than the first time." She remarked.

"The main draw will be the chorus. Again, we want to engrave it into people's heads to the point where they're humming the damn thing at work."

Hailee laughed at his statement. Y/N scrubbed passed the part where the chorus was and went toward the end.

"But I want to hear the outro. This part is not going to be as loud and upbeat but it's gonna be a great way to end it. Let's do it."

She picked up her songbook and looked at the lyrics they had so far. The words for the outro were just a different version of the chorus but in a different tone.

"Ready?" He asked.

She nodded. "Uh-huh."

Y/N played the part. Hailee kept looking at her book and sang the lyrics.

The music ended. This was the first time they've done the outro so it surprised Y/N how perfect it sounded. To him, it even sounded better than the upbeat chorus they recorded. And again...Hailee's singing always made him feel some type of way.

"Good?" She asked.

He nodded as he stared at his screen. "Yeah...yeah. That was great. It might be my favorite part."

"Really?" She asked.

Y/N turned to her and didn't say a word initially. After a moment of them staring at each other, he finally spoke.

"All right, maybe second favorite. Or third. I'm not sure...this is my song after all so I can't pick a specific favorite."

She scoffed. "You mean my song?"

"Uh, no. It's gonna be by Haddon featuring Hailee Steinfeld and Florida Georgia Line."

"Yeah, right. More like by me featuring Haddon and the Florida boys."

Y/N exhaled and leaned back on the seat.

"Okay. How about Haddon and Hailee Steinfeld featuring Florida Georgia Line? Come on, I can't be just a feature. I'm like DJ Khaled...I'm a high profile name."

Hailee smirked. "Hailee Steinfeld and Haddon. Me first and you got a deal."

He chuckled and put his hands up. "Fine. Deal."

The two laughed for a moment before quieting down. They sat there in silence for a bit...and it was beginning to get tense. Suddenly, the Florida Georgia Line duo came into the studio.

"Heya!" Tyler, one part of the duo, greeted.

"Hey!" Hailee got up and greeted them with a hug.

"Sorry, we're late. Brian's never had an In-N-Out burger and he wanted to stop by to get one."

Brian chuckled, holding the bag of food. "They don't have this back in Florida. I wanted to know what the buzz was about."

"All that matters is if you brought us some." Y/N told them with a grin.

Brian gave a thumbs up. "Of course I did. I'm not an asshole."

After the exchange, the group ate their food and continued going over the song.

THE LAKERS WERE in Utah for the Saturday night game. It wasn't nationally televised but each team's respective broadcast stations were airing it. The talk around the game was about the first-time matchup between high school teammates and childhood friends, Y/N L/N and Donovan Mitchell.

The Jazz's starting lineup vs the Lakers was Ricky Rubio, Rodney Hood, Joe Ingles, Derrick Favors, and Rudy Gobert. Donovan had been coming off the bench to start the year.

The first points of the game went to Favors with a midrange pull-up over Larry Nance Jr. On offense, Brook Lopez responded with a spin move on Gobert and scored a layup. Ricky Rubio got the inbound and threw a pass to Ingles in the corner, where he countered with a three.

Lonzo dribbled the ball up and looked for an open man. Y/N drove to the basket and Ball passed it to him. He scored a floater over Favors.

Both teams went a couple of possessions without a bucket. Finally, Rodney Hood scored a three over Lopez. That was the beginning of a run for Utah as Favors scored on the upcoming possession and Ingles made a three in the next one. Ingram responded with a dunk on their end.

With about three minutes left in the first quarter, the score was 7-21 in favor of the Jazz. Utah brought in Mitchell to replace Rubio at that time. After a possession where Kyle Kuzma scored, Donovan got the ball and dribbled up the court. Y/N eyed him.

"Zo! Got on Burks! I got Don!" He called out to his teammate.

Lonzo gave Y/N a nod and went to his assignment. Y/N got in front of Donovan, getting low and stretching out his arms. Mitchell let out a chuckle before putting his game face on.

"Looks like we got something here."

"Ah! The competitive nature between these two!"

Donovan dribbled the ball and tried driving past Y/N. The three-year player stayed with him as Mitchell tried to score a layup, but he missed. The Lakers got the rebound and ran down the court.

"Getting your ass next time." Donovan quickly said as they ran.

Y/N grinned. "You never scoring on me, dawg."

On the Lakers' possession, they passed it around until it reached Y/N in the corner. Burks tried contesting Y/N but he shot it quickly and made a three.

"From the corner! Nothing but net."

"And a nice pass from Kuzma."

Rubio ended up responding with a three in the next turn. Clarkson countered with a layup afterward. The first quarter winded down and the score was 16-28 with about 4 seconds left.

The Jazz had to inbound the ball after a timeout. Each Lakers player was on their man as Rubio had to look for an open teammate.

Donovan quickly escaped Y/N and went behind the three-point line. Rubio found him and threw the ball at Mitchell. He planted his feet and was going to shoot, but saw Y/N running toward him.

He was ready to contest the shot, but Donovan pump-faked and forced Y/N to jump up.

He side-stepped to the left once he was free and threw up a three-pointer where it went in right at the buzzer.

"Donovan Mitchell! Right at the buzzer!"

"He really got L/N with that pump fake. Wow."

With the first quarter over, the teams were going back to their respective benches. The two friends chose to exchange some words before that.

"Never scoring on you, huh?" Donovan smirked.

"Lucky ass shot." Y/N replied.

"Yeah fucking right, I gotcho ass with that fake."

"Just wait, Donny, I'll get you back."

Mitchell pat him on the shoulder before he started walking away.

"Don't call me Donny again or else I'm dunking on you!" He called out.

Y/N laughed and went back to his bench.

The game continued. The Lakers went through the second quarter trying to cut their deficit. Y/N tried to rally them back, finishing the quarter with 15 points.

It was more of the same in the third quarter. Lonzo, Kuzma, and Ingram tried their best to keep them close as well. Y/N went to the bench with about a minute left and watched them. They were getting there as the score was 64-70.

The Jazz ran up the court and Burks had the ball. He shot a three right away but missed. Lonzo and Kuzma were below the basket ready to grab the rebound, but that wouldn't happen.

Donovan came out of nowhere. He jumped up, grabbed the ball, and dunked it over the two young hoopers. The Utah crowd went nuts.

"OH MY! I gotta see that over and over again!"

"An absolute amazing dunk."

"How high can that man go?"

And that wasn't it. The Lakers inbounded the ball and Lonzo tried throwing it to Ingram. Burks stole the ball and passed it back to Donovan, where they now had an extra possession.

Kuzma was on Donovan. The shot clock ticked down and the guard dribbled the ball in front of him. With about 10 seconds left, Mitchell shot a three over Kyle and swished it. The crowd continued to sound off.

"Then he follows it up with a triple!"

"This rook is no joke!"

Y/N watched as the Jazz ran back on defense. All he could do was scoff, as he was impressed with his best friend's skills but also pretty salty that his team was down even more.

The fourth quarter began and it went back and forth. Y/N was finally brought back in and he battled alongside his team to try and at least tie the game.

It would get close, but then a blunder would cause the Jazz to score again. Y/N would make a three but then a defensive lapse on the other end would basically counter that. Mitchell getting comfortable was also an obstacle, as he seemed to be getting the shots he wanted.

The baskets that put the Lakers away were a corner three by Donovan, a pull-up by Favors, and another three by Rubio. The clock winded down and the final score was 81-96. Mitchell ended with 22 points and Y/N had 20.

The buzzer sounded and the players either went straight to the locker room or dapped up the others. Of course, Y/N wasn't going to let the loss keep him from congratulating his friend on a great game.

The cameras followed the Lakers' star as he walked over to the Jazz rookie. Y/N dapped him up and embraced Donovan, who had a towel over his head. Their moment was being broadcast on their team's respective channels.

"Damn good game, brother." Y/N said as he parted.

Mitchell lightly punched his chest. "Appreciate it."

"You ain't winning next time, though." Y/N said as he started walking away.

Mitchell laughed before walking away as well.

HAILEE WAS AT her house. Niall was with her and they were watching television on the sofa. The girl was writing in her songbook which was a habit she'd often have. Lots of ideas filled her head and she had to have it on her in case something did come up.

"You and that dang book." Niall remarked with a chuckle.

"Sorry, I just gotta." She simply replied as she jotted words down.

He put her arm around her. "How about you take a break and we could...go upstairs for a bit?"

Hailee looked at him, ultimately shaking her head. "Yeah, I don't think so. I'm still mad at you for not responding to me the whole day last Tuesday."

"Yeah, I know." Hailee closed her book and handed it to him. "We could stay here and watch a movie though. Can you put this back for me?"

Niall nodded. "Fine."

The blonde man left the living room and went upstairs to where Hailee's room was. He entered it and went to her desk, opening the drawer to put the songbook in.

Upon opening it, something caught his eye. It was another book that he'd never seen before. It looked older and worn out, and Niall assumed his girlfriend was looking over it earlier and left it in there.

He placed the current book inside but out of curiosity...he grabbed the older one. Niall recalled the songs she's released before and was interested in seeing if the drafts to them were in the songbook.

He flipped through the pages. Niall read them more and more...and his eyes darted across the words. He couldn't believe some of them...most of them in fact. Many pages had tidbits written within detailing the meaning to some of lyrics...and it made Niall upset.

Meanwhile, Hailee was downstairs waiting. She heard footsteps entering the living room and turned around to see Niall coming in. He had a scowl on his face and was going for the door.

"Niall?" She called out.

"I'm leaving." He said as he picked up his coat.

Her brows furrowed and got up. "What? Why?"

"Enjoy your movie." He breathed out and left the house.

Hailee was taken aback by the sudden exit. She walked back to the couch but stopped to think. The girl looked toward the staircase for a moment before deciding to go upstairs.

She entered her room and immediately saw the drawer to her desk ajar. But the item that caught her eye was the open book on the table. It wasn't her new songbook...it was her old one.

Hailee grabbed the book and looked into it, seeing the page that was left open. Her breathing hitched for a second and the girl dropped the book onto her bed nearby.

She closed her eyes and buried her face in her hands, letting out a sigh. Her heart pounded at the realization that Niall had read what was in it.

A COUPLE OF days after, Y/N was in his condo. Dua was there with him as they went over a song they planned on releasing in the spring.

The name they came up with was "One Kiss". The hooper had a few days of the All-Star break left until the Lakers played again, so he took the time to work on some music.

"Are you sure you don't want to add your own vocals?" Dua asked. The pair sat on the couch as they went over it. "It's not too late to do so."

Y/N shook his head. "Nah, it's fine. And it'll sound off. This song should just be you and the beat."

"Me and the beat." She repeated.

"My beat specifically. That's been my thing recently."

"Yeah, I've noticed."

She had a point. The last song where Y/N sang was when he did "Wasted" last year. Everything after that so far has been mostly producing music for artists to sing along to.

The young man let out a quiet sigh thinking of that song. It's been over a year...but the events of the night that inspired it felt so recent.

"Besides..." He finally responded. "I can't imagine myself saying one kiss is all it takes. I just can't."

Dua chuckled and slapped his arm. "But you wrote it."

"Not for me to sing, that's for sure."

Suddenly, his phone rang. Y/N picked it up from the coffee table and saw that it was from Zendaya.

"It's Daya." He told Dua.

"Tell her I love her like always." She grinned.

He smiled and answered it.

"Hey, Daya. What's up?"

"Y/N, have you been online?" She straight up asked.

"Uh, not recently. I've been occupied with something for the last couple of hours. It's a song I'm—"

"Niall cheated on Haiz." She interrupted.

Y/N stopped and stayed quiet for a second. He glanced at Dua, who noticed his reaction and wondered what happened. She then went on her phone and opened up her Twitter.

"What?" He finally spoke.

"You heard me. Didn't you hear me?"

"Yeah, I heard! That was more of a shocked response than a question." He sighed. "Is it all online?"

"Uh...that's not the only thing."

"What the fuck?" Dua exclaimed with widened eyes on her phone.

Y/N looked at his girlfriend with a questioning look. "What is it?"

Dua didn't even respond and handed the phone to him. With his own phone by his ear and Dua's in his other hand, he looked at the Twitter timeline.

"How the fuck did this happen?" Y/N asked in an angry tone, handing the phone back to Dua and getting up.

"I'm not so sure." Zendaya replied.

"She—she's too good of a person for this to happen to her. It's not fair. Who could've done this? Why?"

There was a brief pause as Zendaya thought for a moment. She spoke again.

"I've been talking to Hailee and her relationship has been...rocky lately."

"You're talking about—?"

"Yeah, him. Frequently getting calls ignored by him...texts. I think we had our suspicions on what he was really doing."

"Okay..."

"A couple of days ago, she said something happened that pissed him off. He hasn't talked to her since. Y/N, there is only one person who could've had access to those photos."

Y/N crossed his arms and looked out of the condo's windows. He gritted his teeth as he knew what she was about to say.

"I think it was Niall."
