Forty-Nine: The Pain of Loss
~~ YOONGI'S POV ~~
"Come on," I hiss under my breath, tossing my head in every direction. I've been searching for Jungkook for nearly an hour, checking every nook and cranny of the village. Hoseok was no where to be seen, either. What about Heyra? Where did she vanish off too?
"Jungkook-ah!" I shout, his name rumbling from deep in my chest, "Jungkook-ah!"
The only sound that greets me is that of deafening silence...
The entire village is so eerily silent; an uncertainty seems to loom in the air, sending an unsettling vibe throughout the area. People flee as I walk past, but they seem to be afraid of something else; not just me.
The sun is slowly beginning to descend, barely even visible because of the horrid air quality. I suddenly dig my heel into the dirt, kicking a large piece straight into the sky.
"Fucking Muhyeok," I cuss under my breath, anger quickly beginning to surge in the pit of my stomach. Is Jungkook alright? What in the world is going on? I don't dare to ask any of the villagers, knowing they will only scurry if I approach them.
I pace around a more desolate part of town, close to the outskirts of the forest. I walk around with great caution, inspecting every sliver of space.
"Yoongi-ah!"
I cock my head towards the voice, my heart plunging in relief when I notice a bloody Hoseok running towards me. My breath hitches at the sight of his mangled flesh and torn clothing, not to mention the countless scars and trickles of blood dotting his face. He limps towards me, fighting with all of his might.
I rush towards him, immediately throwing his arm over my shoulder so that he can receive some proper support.
"Hoseok," I breathe, carefully guiding him towards a place to sit, "Your alive."
"I'm fine," he smiles, breaking away, "I can walk--" He stands upright, wiping his sweaty eyebrows which are crusted with crimson blood, "Yoongi-- Jungkook-- I lost him..."
"How did you split apart?" I ask in a quiet voice, fear quickly constructing inside, "What happened?"
"We were suddenly attacked by Muhyeok and a few other men... Jungkook ordered for Jimin to escape with Jangmi. Eventually Jungkook took on Muhyeok, and I went after the other men. We split ways, and I have no idea where he could possibly be..." Hoseok's voice drowns off into a chortle, "Yoongi I'm scared."
"Stop," I order, my voice resembling snapping icicles, "Don't say that." I fight back my own emotions, not wanting to think the worst. Jungkook is strong. He's a fighter-- not one to give up easily. But he is also young; young and naïve.
"Hoseok, you need to go to the house and clean up. Jangmi went into labor once she reached the house. Sanghee has all the medical supplies prepared. I will search for Jungkook with her. You are in no place to do so. Follow me."
I grab his arm, refusing to listen to his protests. I guide him towards the house, that unsettling feeling never once leaving my gut.
~~ SANGHEE'S POV ~~
"Ohhh my gosh," Jimin cries softly from beside Jangmi, quickly clamping his eyes shut as I spread Jangmi's legs further apart, preparing for the heat of the labor.
"Jimin! You are seriously not helping!" I shout over the sound of Jangmi's painful cries, "I TOLD YOU NOT TO LOOK!"
He tightens his grip on Jangmi's hand, kneeling down beside her head and whispering reassuring words into her ear, which she probably can't even hear. Even though he is grossed out by the blood and overall the entire situation, I still can't deny how sweet he's been this whole time. It's quite evident he loves Jangmi, even though she doesn't return those feelings.
"Why does it hurt so much?" she cries softly, arching her back in discomfort.
"You're doing amazing," I say in a soft tone, wiping my sweaty brow before returning my hands under the blanket. She continuously groans in pain, trying her best to remain strong despite the circumstances. She's been pushing the baby nonstop for nearly an hour now... I can't even imagine how much pain she's experiencing.
"Jungkook," she murmurs his name for the trillionth time, "Jungkook please come."
Jimin glances down at her with glossy eyes, clearly both distraught by her pain and his own. Though he loves her immeasurably and would do anything to keep her safe, she's madly in love with another man. He gently caresses her hair, trying his best to calm her down.
Jangmi slowly springs forward with Jimin's help, gritting her teeth as she attempts to deliver the child.
"That's it!" I cry out in relief, "Keep pushing! Your almost done!"
Jangmi tosses her head back, letting out one last scream as the baby is finally delivered. I quickly wipe off the small infant with a blanket, quickly grabbing the necessary tools in order to remove the cord. Jimin praises Jangmi for her efforts, he grabs a cool cloth and delicately wipes away her sweat.
"It's a boy!" I announce proudly, carrying the small child over to his mother. Jangmi's eyes light up with an iridescent glow at the sight of her precious child. She slowly reaches out for the baby, small tears trickling down her cheeks. Jimin glances down with so much admiration; as though he himself is the father.
"What do you want to call him?" he asks gingerly, his eyes fixated upon the infant.
"Seokjin-ah," Jangmi says faintly, still breathing heavily, "That's what I want to call him."
I smile warmly at the young child, admiring his features. The newborn has a head full of thick hair, rosy cheeks, and plump pink lips. Quite the handsome child, considering he was born mere seconds ago.
I wonder what my child would look like, I think curiously, although birth itself looks treacherous, Would Yoongi even want children? What if it happened by accident? How can you control that here? No one exactly wants to raise children in Changu. I certainly wouldn't want to.
I gaze longingly out the window, watching in disappointment as rain begins to drizzle down the window, coating the ground with clear liquid. I sigh, moving towards the bed once again.
"Jimin, could you help me clean up?"
*
Shortly after the birth of baby Seokjin, Hoseok arrived at the house, a complete mess. Jimin, Jangmi, and Seokjin had all fallen asleep on the bed together whilst I washed the sheets and finished cleaning. It was late into the evening when he came, his appearance a bloody train wreck.
"Hoseok!" I whisper, shutting the door behind his limping figure, "Where is Yoongi? What about Jungkook?"
Hoseok falls onto the nearest chair, reaching for the aid kit on the table, "He's looking for Jungkook... alone..." Hoseok send a nervous glance in my direction, "Sanghee--"
"I have to go---" I mumble, frantically reaching for my jacket. I hate the thought of him searching alone in the dark pouring rain, with Muhyeok roaming freely around the village.
"Sanghee!" Hoseok shouts, lunging forward and yanking onto my wrist, "You can't go alone! It's dark. Yoongi wouldn't want you too!"
"That's why I need to go," I respond in a choked voice, suddenly feeling driven by concern. I pull out Yoongi's precious box of weapons, yanking out a cased dagger and stuffing it in the pocket of my jacket.
"Promise me you'll look after them," I gaze desperately into his eyes, gesturing to the bed, "I'll be back soon, I swear."
"Alright," Hoseok sighs in defeat, "I won't stop you... be careful, Sanghee... please."
I plant a quick kiss on his forehead before throwing the door open. I step out into the rain, large droplets spilling down my body and drenching every inch in a matter of seconds. Thunder blasts from the sky, the occasional streak of lightening glistening throughout the sky.
I begin to run.
I can't see. I can barely see what's two feet ahead. My feet dig deep into the thick mud, slowing my pace by great measure.
Yoongi, please. Please be safe. Come to me. Please, Yoongi. I'm begging you.
I explore various directions, my heart pounding with fear. Icy water engulfs my body, large droplets spill from my hair. A shiver radiates up my spine, a sense of hopelessness filling my soul. After desperately searching for several minutes, distress and anxiety begin to take over. My heartbeat begins to sound in my own head, pounding at a slow and disoriented pace.
I squint my eyes, focusing on what appears to be a dark blob kneeling in the mud, another figure laying lifelessly on the ground. I begin to approach the figures, plowing my way through the compact mud as the storm rages on. The familiar figure of Min Yoongi greets my eyes as I approach, relief overtaking my anxious heart.
Wait.
I gaze down in utter horror at the sight of a lifeless body sprawled across the mud, the face pale as fresh snow. I slowly inch closer, my heart plunging in my chest, heartbeat nearly stopping completely.
No.
No.
I freeze completely, breath vanishing from my lungs. I can't move; I can't even open my mouth to speak. I gaze at the lifeless soul, a series of tears spilling from my eyes.
It's Jungkook.
It was Jungkook--- the man who was so madly in love; Jungkook who was about to become a father. Jungkook who was immeasurably adored by Jangmi. Jungkook, Yoongi's closest friend...
Yoongi slowly turns towards me, his eyes blazing with pure pain and wrath. His lips are quivering, eyes red and body nearly trembling. And then, as though someone had stabbed him through the heart, in a pained voice, he uttered,
"He's dead."
