Matt smiles cheshire-cat wide at the simple message and answers almost immediately when she calls him. He comes face to face with a tray of brown christmas cookies decorated with red and white frosting with variety of sprinkles.

Gemma flips the camera around and takes a bite out of one of the cookies, chewing slightly and then looking to her right

"What do we think?"

"You burnt them" a small voice says beside her

She swallows the cookie in her mouth and drops her mouth in surprise "They aren't burnt Mase"

Matt sees a child's hand reach into frame and grab the crisp cookie out of Gemma's hand and he turns it over, shoving it in her face to prove a point "It's burnt Gem!."

Her face scrunches up and she side-eyes Matt "The crisp adds character" she says as she grabs it out of her brother's hand and shoved the rest in her mouth, making her young brother laugh.

Matt smiles as he listens to Mason giggle at his older sister's antics. She props her phone up and takes a star shaped cookie messily covered in red icing off the tray, taking a bite out of it whilst leaning on the counter.

Matt tilts his head "Are they actually burnt?"

Gem dusts the crumbs off her hands "They're crispy not burnt Matthew"

He rolls his eyes "They look burnt"

"They are burnt!"

Gemma turns around and Mason slightly pushes her out of the way and makes his way into the frame, standing on his tip-toes so Matt can see him properly.

He holds himself up while he talks to Matt "She put them in for too long and forgot about them so most of them are yuck"

Gem rolls her eyes and grabs the tray of cookies off the bench to put them in a box. Mason grabs a small, wooden stool and places it at the foot of the bench so he doesn't have to keep holding himself up to be seen in the phone.

"Are you Gemma's boyfriend Matt?"

Gemma's eyes widen slightly and she looks over Mason's head from afar, seeing what Matt's answer is gonna be. Matt mimics Gemma's wide eyes and purse his lips "Gem and I are friends"

Mason, clearly not satisfied with his answer, fidgets and leans his chin on his folded arms in front of him "Dad says you're her boyfriend"

"Mason!" Gemma raises her voice a few octaves, enough to get his full attention. Mason turns his head towards her quickly, his curls bouncing as he does so.

He tilts his head "What?"

Gemma's eyebrow raises "Dad never said that"

Mason merely shrugs his shoulders "Dad says that Matt should come and stay with us and that's what boyfriends and girlfriends do"

Gemma clicks the plastic lid on the box shut and walks over to Mason, grabbing his face in a playful way "Matt isn't going to come stay with us."

Matt's eyes crinkle as he smiles and he watches Gem lift Mase off the stool and throw him over her shoulder. She grips around his stomach and he giggles lightly while she spins around with him on her shoulder, she places him down on the ground where he slides down tiredly against the cabinet.

Gemma throws her head back and laughs loudly at the sight of Mason huffing dramatically. She walks back to the counter and pushes the stool out of the way with her foot, leaning her elbows back on the counter.

The smile never leaves Matt's face "What did you wish for, for Christmas?"

Gemma smirks and winks "You obviously"

Matt's face falls flat at the corny joke "That was embarrassing"

She throws her hands up "Your reaction cancels out the embarrassment"

His eyebrows crease "How?"

"Because it's funny watching you cringe everytime" She shrugs and grabs the phone off the counter before making her way upstairs to her room. Matt gets distracted by Gem as she just talks about anything that comes to mind, passing tinsel lined hallways and a small, lit up Christmas tree in the corner of her room.

She lifts her phone a small way above her head to show Matt the tree. It's a lush green colour with purple, white and silver tinsel and bulbuls placed strategically around the tree; there was a silver star on top of the tree and multicoloured presents placed around the base.

"This shit took me so long because I lost basically all the decorations so the tree was naked for, like, three days"

Matt opens his mouth to say something when Nick bursts through his door. Acting on instinct, he slams his phone to his chest and quickly presses his volume button until his phone is on mute.

Nick looks at him questioningly and tilts his head "What are you doing?"

Matt shook his head "You scared the shit out of me!"

"I didn't know you were on the phone, sorry" Nick says as he shrugs.

Matt sits up, his phone still face down, and shrugs "I'm not on the phone, I was watching tiktok"

Nick quirks a brow and fiddles with the door handle "Mom wants us to help with setting the table for lunch"

Matt nods and climbs off his bed, pulling his phone off his chest and coming face-to-face with a very confused Gemma. She's standing in the middle of her room with a folded up jumper in her hands, like she's putting away clothes, and Matt subtly nods to her as Nick exists the room.

He turns up the volume on his phone and looks at his screen, opening his mouth to say something before Gem interrupts him

"I'll talk to you later. Merry Christmas Matty"

Matt smiles softly "Merry Christmas sunshine"

She leaves him looking at a blank screen and he pockets his phone, beginning to walk downstairs where he can hear family laughing together in the kitchen. A smile graces his face as he walks into the kitchen and is met with a stack of plates shoved against his chest and an arm affectionately wrapped around his shoulders.
