Matt slides Nick's phone across the counter and pushes himself off off his elbows to stand up straight

"It's an old photo Matt"

"I know Chris"

"There's nothing to worry about because you guys talked about it, right?"

Matt sighs and tips his head back

"No we didn't"

Chris places down his can of Pepsi on the counter and Nick starts to pick up on the vibe that he's not in on whatever Chris and Matt are talking about

"What do you mean you guys didn't talk about it?"

"We haven't spoken in three days"

"What?" Nick and Chris question simultaneously and look at eachother with questions written across both their faces.

"She never called me"

"What about the voicemail?"

Matt furrows his brows and closes his eyes as he looks at his brother and starts to slightly raise his voice "I don't fucking know Chris! The only communication we've had is when she sent me a Snapchat yesterday telling me she'd be in the studio and that she wouldn't be able to talk. As if we'd spoken anyway!"

Chris looks at him puzzled "what did you say back to her?"

"Nothing. I left her on open"

Chris and Nick's mouths open in shock and they begin to talk over eachother

"What do you mean you left her on open? Matt what the fuck"

"What voicemail? Hello why are you talking about!?"

Matt begins to talk when Chris abruptly interrupts him and turns to Nick

"Matt came into my room at like one a.m. a couple nights ago talking about how he likes Gemma but doesn't know how she feels - even though it's so fucking obvious - and so I called her, she didn't answer and he left a her a voicemail"

Nick looks from Matt to Chris to Matt again "okay so what did you say?"

"I told her how I felt" he shrugs

"Like, just like that? Like you just told her?"

"Yup"

Nick shakes his head in disbelief and the three of them stand in their kitchen in silence when Nick's phone starts vibrating in front of him

Nick wastes no time in picking up the call and putting it on speaker and Avery wastes no time speaking

"The photo is old! Tell Matt the photo is old!"

Matt crosses his arms and braces himself on the bench top behind him "I know it's old, Avery"

Avery, who wasn't expecting Matt to be on the other end of the line, quiets for a few seconds. A door opening can be heard in the background and another voice occupies her space

"What?"

Although distant, Matt would recognise that voice anywhere, He tries to appear calm as he feels his heart start to panic but with Nick and Chris' eyes now burning a hole in his face to try and subtly gage his reaction, he isn't sure how calm he actually looks right now.

Gemma sounds beyond pissed talking to her bandmate and Matt can't say he blames her at all. The photo shocked him, Chris and Nick enough so he can't even imagine how she feels in this moment.

It's obvious that Avery has made an effort to pull the phone as far away from her as she can and whether she's done it on purpose or not, Matt is grateful that the conversation they're having right now isn't right in his ear.

"Have you spoken to Matt?"

"What? Avery you know I haven't talked to Matt since he left me on fucking open yesterday"

"Well have you tried again?"

"Why? So I can get no response again!? I don't even know what Matt has to do with pictures from my old relationship suddenly turning up"

Matt squeezes his eyes closed and his heart pangs in his chest. He deserves that, he knows, but it still doesn't suck any less that he has to hear her say it with such certainty. Between the looks his brothers are giving him, the tone of Gemma's voice and the way he's been feeling lately he know he needs to just be anywhere else right now

As he tries to walk away Chris grabs the back of his shirt and levels him with a look that tells him that he needs to stay and hear whatever Avery or Gemma has to say but he just can't. He told himself that he wasn't going to get into the middle of whatever potential unfinished business there is between Finn and Gemma and somehow, he feels like he's managed to do just that.

When he tries to squirm Chris grips on tighter until Matt pushes him off and goes to the laundry to grab a bottle of water purely for the sake of not wanting to hear what comes out of Gemma's mouth next.

He knows it's fair and he knows he put himself in the situation he's in but he feels wrong listening in on a conversation that he knows isn't for his ears.

After a few minutes he can hear Nick's voice through the wall so he grabs his water and walks back into the kitchen in time to catch the last of Gemma's sentence.

"-Nick. Old photos got leaked and now I've got random fucking girls in the comments of that post calling me a cheater! I don't know what else you expect me to do right now."

Matt's face drops at hearing about what people are saying about Gemma; he hadn't seen those comments because he hadn't actually looked. He knows that people said things about his and Gemma's friendship in particular but he hadn't really thought about people actually thinking that it was anything more than just a close friendship.

The look Nick has on his face makes it clear to Matt that he really needs to pull his head out of his ass. His brother looks borderline helpless as he listens to Gemma, and Matt can't help but stand there and be actually helpless. He's almost positive that if he were to swoop in now it would just make her feel a thousand times worse, but he also feels the need to be there for her as a friend. As someone she knows she can count on to just talk too and although three days isn't that long, he can't help but feel like he's jeopardised that because he started getting fucking insecure.

He weighs out his options in his head before his mind is seemingly made for him

"Look, can you just tell Matt to give me a call? Or even let me know what's going on? I just- I just want to talk to him I guess"

Both Nick and Chris look to Matt still standing in the doorway for a moment and nick picks his phone up

"I will Gem, talk to me if you need anything okay?"

"Thanks Nick"

The sound of the call ending rings through the kitchen as Matt looks straight past his brothers and out the window. He takes note of how the morning sun looks shining through the trees on his street and how clear the sky looks due to the lack of clouds, in the back of his head he knows that he's only suddenly super interested in what's outside because he knows what's about to come out of Chris' mouth.

"You're telling me you still don't know what her feelings are towards you? There are photos going around of her and her ex, she has no idea how they got out and you're the one she wants to talk too."

Matt nods once and casts his eyes down to his socked feet "What did she say when I was out of the room?"

Nick rolls his eyes "That she hasn't spoken to Finn and that she can't even recall when the photo was taken, which is why she's so angry about it. She knows that there were other ones taken while she was with Finn that never got posted so she's worried that they'll get posted as well and she'll have to deal with Finn all over again"

Matt listens intently to Nick, takes in every last word he says and turns them over in his head, lets everything that's been said the past half hour wash over him like water in order to find the right words that he can say to her and he still comes up short.

"Matt are you listening?"

He looks up from the floor to answer Nick "I'm trying to think of what I can say when I call her"

Nick shrugs his shoulders "Maybe she just needs a friend to listen, even if that's not what you want to be"

Matt shakes his head "I can be her friend Nick, that's not the issue. I owe her an explanation and telling her that I practically ghosted her for the past three days because I got insecure isn't a really good one"

"No but it's honest"

Nick and Matt make eye contact once again and Matt pushes himself off the doorframe he's leaning on to turn around and walk up to his room, determined to fix the weird rift he's created between him and Gemma.
