027 : the ring

Tom met Theo in a town centre in Kent half an hour after midday-just on purpose of course, just for Theo. As soon as he saw Tom, Theo stormed over to his foe, seemingly raging at his lack of punctuality.

"I said 12." He grumbled, his nostrils flared and fists curled.

Tom smiled, patting his foe on the shoulder and walking toward a jewellers without Theo.
"Sorry mate! Must've got caught in traffic." He shrugged, hearing Theo's pace quicken just for him.

"Well, it is important for you to be here today," Theo begun, slapping Tom's back and he grimaced. "I know how much you love Scarlie, so you can help me choose the perfect engagement ring for her to wear for the rest of her life." Theo snarls in Tom's ear, and he shrugs him off, quickening his pace and entering the jewellers abruptly.

"No, you don't understand. I'm only here because I know she's happy." Tom replies harshly, dangerously close to Theo with an index finger threatening him.

"Yeah, because she's happy with me."

"You better not mess up her happiness then," Tom says to Theo as he looks at the jewels sparkling in the artificial light. "Because I'll be there for when you do."

The fifth shop he dug deep into that day, he found it. He found Scarlett's ring. He knew she always wanted something that was unique and wasn't square (she said square diamonds 'fuck her finger up').

A little gold and silver diamond pear-shaped ring, dazzling and beaming forever and always. It looked perfect, it was perfect for her.

"This is it." Tom confirms to Theo, who, for most of the day, was idly standing around doing practically nothing for someone who wants to marry Scarlett.

Both men wanted to marry her, but only one could. And that was Theo.

"Right. I want my name engraved on the inside of the ring. Tom, what's her ring size?" Theo was suddenly paying all the attention in the world, snatching the delicate diamond from Tom's fingers.

"Uh, size e." This was the part of the day that Tom hated; they found the perfect ring, and he would buy it, and he would put it on Scarlett's ring finger, and she would wear it, thinking Theo chose it perfectly.

No. Tom chose it.

The minute Theo payed for the ring, he walked away from Tom, so he presumed Theo was only saying goodbye to him. And it also meant Tom was able to be back with Scarlett again for the rest of the week, so he didn't mind.

He minded that he knew Theo was proposing, though, and there was nothing he could say or do about it.

A few hours later, Tom found himself parked outside the hotel that Scarlett was. The sky had gone black with tints of navy and the shine of the moon was concealed by the ugly grey clouds that circulated in the atmosphere.

"Munchkin!" Scarlett rung out to Tom as she runs to him, hugging him tight. He chuckles, returning the favour as he sets down his suitcase outside his hotel room, which was comfortably next to Scarlett's.

"Hey! How was the meet and greet today?" Tom asks as he unlocks his door with the key card he was given at the front desk.

"So lovely meeting everyone! But..lunch time was boring. You weren't there." She whines, pouting slightly and making Tom only laugh.

"Don't worry! I'm back now." He smiles, taking the room service menu and seeing what dish would suit him best for tonight.

"Was everything at home okay? Your mum, dad, the boys? God if something's happened-" Scarlett rambles, and Tom's eyes widen, remembering the lie he had to tell in order to make sure Scarlett had only the best proposal from the wrong man.

"Hey! Scar, it's cool, I had to get some things and look after Pads while everyone was out."

"Okay! Theo was texting me all day, he was such a cutie!" Scarlett rambles, and Tom wished she rambled about relevant things, but he would have to listen to much worse soon, so he put up with it.

"Oh?"

"Yeah! He said he managed to get a day free on the last day of tour, and he's taking me out after!" Scarlett beams and Tom remains silent, silently knowing in his head that was the day where his life and chance of loving was over. For good.

"Munchkin?" Scarlett pouted, placing a supportive hand on her best friend, having not heard a reply from him.

"I need to sleep. Tired from the journey up." Tom mumbles, finding his pyjama bottoms in the small, make-do wardrobe in his hotel room.

"Oh, um, goodnight." She whispers, leaving swiftly and quickly.
