chapter one: the gathering

The Sinclaire family had deep ties to Wizards Mafia, they werent what you would call a Mafia family (like the Greenfields or the Zabini's) per se, they were what you would call the keepers of the Mafia affairs, they kept things quiet, payed off folks who needed paying off and even provided protection and security for those who needed it (inside and out of the Mafia business), all for a pretty heft price. So, when some of the highest ranking and richest families (one of which they were) of the wizarding world diecided to congregate together on the first week of the summer holiday for their children, it came as no surprise to the Sinclaire twins that they were to be one of the many families attending and the morning of, Maxwell and Davina dutifully slipped into their newest formal wear (because rich and powerful wizarding families all in one place meant you had to look your fanciest and richest), although it was not without complaint.

"Mother, do I have to wear this?" Davina asks, eyeing herself in the full length mirror sat in the corner of her bedroom with disdain. She had not been able to attend the shopping trip the other day, and unfortunately for her, her mother had picked out something god awfully purple, rather than the usual show of the family color (red) that Davina usually tried to wear to events like this (because she was all about the family pride). The girl did a slow spin, trying to see what she could do to improve it, and pouted as her mother gave her a stern look through the mirror from where she sat on the large, four poster bed.

"You're wearing it Davina, no ifs or buts." Rose Sinclaire says, watching her daughter spin. "If you'd like, you don't have to wear the matching shoes..i think black will be just fine." The girl seemed to lift spirits just the slightest bit at the mention of not having to wear the ugly heels her mother had actually thought would be okay to bring home, and gives the blonde a small smile, as if somewhat calling a truce about the dress. "I suppose I better go make sure your father and brother are ready, get your hair done love, and put on those silver earrings your father got you for Christmas.."

The blonde rolls her eyes, but does as told.

It wasn't long before the Sinclaire family had apparated to their hosts at Malfoy Manor, and were among one of the first families to arrive. After being welcomed in, the family were told to wait in the backyard and mingle about until everyone arrived, which was just what they were doing nearly half an hour later when Draco Malfoy came walking up behind Davina and her best friend, Maddison Greenfield, his infamous bored look upon his pale, pointed, but still somehow handsome face.

The girls were giggling, gossiping about their fellow peers, particularly the girls in their year that were in attendance and what they were wearing or what they had done last year that would haunt them for the rest of their school lives and were completely surprised when Draco cleared his throat from behind them, mid gossip about one Pansy Parkinson and what she had done at the Yule Ball last Christmas. With a jump and small screams, the girls turned around, eyes wide in the hopes that it wasn't one of their parents there to scold them off.

Their eyes went a little less wide at the sight of him, and, they relaxed just the slightest bit. They knew he had a reputation for being rude and cruel, and neither wanted to be on the receiving end of it. "Draco," Davina says politely, bowing her head respectfully for just a moment before grabbing her best friends elbow. "we were just about to go grab some punch, right Maddy?"

"Well, i'm afraid miss Greenfield will have to grab her punch alone," Draco drawls, looking over the blonde before him. He couldn't deny that Davina Sinclaire was beautiful, she was knock dead gorgeous, and had often caught his eye last year, although he was too nervous to actually interact with her besides a few curt hellos, he thought that she was too sweet for him, even though she so clearly tried to act as if she wasn't. The purple dress looked beautiful on her, the shade sat nicely against her already sunkissed summer skin, and brought out the color of her eyes, which were the kind of pooling color that he thought he could just get lost in forever. "i'm supposed to escort Davina to our families' lunch table.."

Davina could see her parents staring at her from across the large back yard, and just as she was about to turn him down (despite the fact that he hadn't offered and moreso had told her), her mother turned her eyes onto her, it was as if the woman had heard her thoughts, and with a roll of her eyes, the teen grabs his offered arm, tucking her hand into the crook of his elbow like a polite lady should have. "Escort away, Malfoy." She says, letting him lead her to the beautifully decorated table.

Both sets of parents had their eyes on them as they walked to the table, the mothers sharing a secretive, damn near excited look with each other that should have warned both the teens, if only either of them hadn't been just as equally flustered after Draco had awkwardly attempted to compliment the girl on how she looked. Upon reaching the table, the teens sat quietly at the only two seats left (which just so happened to be next to each other), and waited for the parents and the rest of the guests to sit down as well before they began eating.

The meal went somewhat smoothly, the group were chatting politely with Mrs. Malfoy asking Davina questions about school as well what she wanted to do afterwards (as if Davina actually had a clue at this point in life), and had even thrown Maxwell a few questions, who couldn't help but look suspicious at the whole event. It was also a much similar conversation for Draco as Rose drilled into him, asking again about school and plans for afterward (Draco had stated that he wanted to be a potions master, or maybe create one that would change the world), which somewhat satisfied the Sinclaire matriarch for the time being..that is until the parents shared another look, and began clanging on their glasses, trying to get everyone to quiet down so that they could speak.

The twins and Draco shared a look as they watched their parents stand to their feet, oddly happy smiles upon all four faces (Mr. Malfoy looked just down right scary when he smiled, if you asked Davina) as they spoke what would be one of the most surprising things that their children would ever hear come out of their mouths. "Ladies and Gentlemen, you have all been gathered here today," At this the moms shared an almost giddy look, as if knowing something that nobody else didn't (which clearly they did). "to be witness to what will be one of the greatest betrothals of our bloodlines...Davina and Draco, please stand..a pair to be married upon Davina's eighteenth birthday!" Davina and Draco stood, both sporting wide, fearful eyes, sharing a look that clearly said how clueless the both of them were, and how this was news to them just as it was to anybody else.

A round of applause went up as the couple stood, and continued on for quite a moment before the parents deemed it was okay to resume meals and allowed everyone to sit back down (which, stunned, the newly engaged couple had already done), large grins upon their faces.

"What the bloody hell is going on, mother?" Was the first words out of Davina's mouth, and Draco made a noise as if to second the question, the words echoing still in both of their minds.

Mrs. Malfoy and Rose shared a look (as did the fathers before excusing themselves, taking Maxwell with them), as if they had anticipated this kind of reaction. "Well, darlings," Rose says, offering up her own explanation first, in hopes that Narcissa would jump in at any time. "It's a tradition in both of our families, and we're both so strong with our bloodlines, that we figured it would just be a match made in heaven, and the both of you practically look like you were made for each other, I mean just look how good you look sitting next to each other!" Davina glances over at Draco, who seemed to be turning red in the face, although from anger or embarrassment she wasn't sure.

"And we didn't tell you sooner because we thought it would just be a lovely surprise!" Narcissa adds, finally jumping in. "Although judging by the both of your guys' reactions, I gather its not."

Draco looks at his mother, and Davina could just hear the tense anger in his voice as he reached up to loosen the dress tie around his neck. "You thought it would be a nice surprise to not tell me about my future bride, mother?" He asks, trying to remain polite so as not to say something hurtful, particularly something that might hurt Davina.

"Mother, we don't even know each other!" Davina says, giving him an apologetic look. "And while i'm sure he's a nice boy, don't you think it would have been just a little bit courteous to the both of us to let us get to know each other first before you just dump that kind of news on us, and everyone around us? What if we don't even like each other? What if..what if he's mean to me, mother?" She hisses, her mind already over thinking the entire situation.

Both mothers sit back in their seats, shocked, but unapologetic looks on their faces. "Darling, your father and i hardly knew each other when we were married.." Rose says, and Mrs. Malfoy makes a noise of agreement.

"It was the same with your father and I too, Draco." Narcissa says, looking at her son coolly, as if she couldn't believe that he would dare act like this in front of their guests despite the news she had just given him.

Draco scoffs, pushing his chair out after Davina, who had decided that she had had enough of this conversation and needed to get away for a moment, before she began yelling, or worse. "Yeah, and look at how the two of you have turned out." He says, throwing his napkin onto the table as he goes to follow Davina. He figured it would be the polite thing to do. He wasn't trying to be harsh to his mother, but he wasn't blind. He knew his mother and father weren't the happiest of married couples, and were cold towards each other more than anything on most occasions, showing hardly any emotion or love towards each other and having nothing in common besides him and..the dark arts.

Davina had stomped her way into the manor house, looking for the restroom, or just anywhere quiet where she could compose herself and was not expecting it when Draco grabbed her elbow after he came running up quietly behind her. The blonde started, glancing at him with wide eyes before calming down.

"I'm sure i'm the last person you want to talk to right now, but i just wanted to apologize." He says, letting her arm go. "I had no idea this was going to happen, and i never even knew they were planning something like this. As soon as everyone is gone, which im sure will be soon after what just happened, i'm going to try and talk to my parents, convince them that its a bad idea, okay?"

Davina looks at him, glad that he wasn't trying to make her okay with it or something. She nods. "Yeah, im going to do the same as soon as we get home." She says, her voice curt as she was trying to hold her anger in. "Is there a restroom, i need to collect myself for a moment." She says, hoping he would at least be polite enough to show her (which he was) and not tell anyone where she was if she didn't turn back up for a while.

And it did take her more than while to show back up, in fact, her parents were about to start looking for her in a panic when she strolled into the Malfoy's foyer with Mac on her arm. Her twin brother had taken it upon himself to come and find her, and calm her down before making her face their parents and the Malfoys, and for good measure because by the time he had gotten to her, she was so seethingly angry that her face was crimson red. "Found her, she was lost in the library." He says, trying to make it seem like she hadn't been in the bathroom for over an hour by that point.

"Yes, well, Davina always did like books." Redford says, trying to cut the newfound tension in the room. Unfortunately though, it was only Mr. Malfoy who caught on and let out a chuckle. "So, i suppose we'll be going now, and we'll let you know when the kids can get together..until then, im sure they'll be keeping in touch, right?"

Davina and Draco share a look, both remembering what they had said to each other earlier about convincing their parents to back out of this. "Oh, we most certainly will." Davina says, giving him what she hoped passed as a polite and eager smile, before grabbing onto her fathers arm as they got ready to apparate out to their own home.
