In this collaboration with John Rich, Taylor writes about the duality of being involved with a good guy, but longing for the feeling you had in a past relationship — that, although turbulent, was filled with passion. Taylor explained in 2010:

"I got this idea for a song about being in a relationship with a nice guy who is punctual and opens up the door for you and brings you flowers...but you feel nothing. The whole time you're with him, you're thinking about the guy who was complicated and messy and frustrating."

A similar concept can be heard on the song "Haunted" from her third studio album, Speak Now
