8. The Sports Festival
UA held a yearly sports festival that was broadcast around the world, anyone was allowed to come through the UA gates and watch the future prodigies fight and compete. That day was coming up fast and Izuku was still stuck on crutches.
"You'll be in a brace for a couple weeks but then we'll hopefully be able to heal your ankle all the way," the doctor Rhea made him see at one of the Hero commission's training compounds told him happily. The lady was kind and gentle handed, she patted Izuku's knee in assurance.
They had just finished healing some of his ankle, every few weeks Izuku would come in and be partially healed by the lady before being sent on his way to let it naturally heal. He understood that letting it heal on his own would be healthier and better in the long run than fully healing it all at once.
"Try to move it around a bit every day, roll your ankle in circles, try to put a little weight on it, you know all that fun stuff." The doctor ordered as she finished putting his brace on his foot. Izuku nodded and she handed him his crutches with a broad smile. "I'll see you next time cowboy, and don't even think of training."
"You got it Doc," Izuku grinned with a wonky two finger salute.
Izuku hobbled his way out into the hall where Rhea was waiting for him, she was leaning against the wall, and when he stepped out of the small medical room her golden eyes were trained on him.
He offered a small smile that she didn't return as she pushed off the wall. Izuku frowned as they fell into step beside each other, Rhea wasn't an easy lady to read, some days she was the sweetest angel on earth other days Izuku was afraid to make a sound in her vicinity. Today Izuku couldn't tell what type of day it was.
"The Sports festival is on monday, Hawks will be there with a few other officals." Rhea stated and Izuku looked over at her curiously. "They'll be scouting for new talent, I want you in the box with them since you won't be participating."
"Will you be there?" He questioned quietly making her finally look over at him and meet his gaze.
"No, but Riko will." Izuku nodded and they continued their walk in silence.
--
The day of the sports festival came quickly, Izuku was dressed in his uniform as he walked through the UA arena hallways trying to find the box number Hawks and the officials were residing in for the day. He reached the end of the hall he was in and realized their box was on the final floor. Izuku withheld a groan as he trudged up to the large stairway.
"There's my favorite little firefly," someone called from behind him right before he could take the first step up the stairs. Izuku turned back to see a chipper red winged blonde grinned at him, Hawks lowered his sunglasses and winked at him. "You need help up those stairs?"
Izuku looked back at the stairs then back to Hawks and nodded. Hawks' grin widened as he walked forward and took Izuku's crutches before wrapping an arm around Izuku's knees and throwing him over his shoulder. Izuku grunted as the air was knocked from his lungs and his face was assaulted by feathers.
"Heard you're staying with us for the day, I can't wait to hang out without any training!" Hawks chattered as he started up the stairs. Izuku rolled his eyes and let his head hang, trying to drown out the noises around him, the day just started and Izuku was already overwhelmed.
They made it to the landing and Hawks stopped, he dropped Izuku down on his feet without much care making Izuku let out a strangled groan as his face morphed into one of pain. Hawks looked at him with a quirked brow before noticing Izuku's face and the way the boy hunched over and grabbed at his ankle.
"I'm sorry Firefly! I forgot!" He rushed out reaching for Izuku, Izuku pushed his hand away roughly.
"It's fine, just show me where the box is so I can sit down," he gritted out taking his crutches from the man beside him. Hawks gained a look that one could only compare to a kicked puppy as he led him down the hall to a large room with multiple couches and chairs. Izuku looked towards the large windows on the far side of the room overlooking the arena. He made his way over and looked out, there were so many people filing into their seats around the arena. Looking out Izuku finally understood the saying 'a sea of people.'
"There you are," Riko greeted with a smile, Izuku turned and took in the man's appearance. Riko was dressed in a dark three piece suit and his hair was neatly combed over like usual. "How's the ankle?"
"It's good, I'm on track, except for a minor setback from someone dropping me on it." Izuku replied glaring over his shoulder at a pouting Hawks, who was pretending he wasn't eavesdropping.
Riko chuckled and patted his shoulder, "Rhea will deal with him later, why don't you get off your feet for a bit?" Izuku nodded and let Riko lead him over to the couch Hawks sat on. "Oh, I have some people that would like to meet you, but we'll do that later. You just sit and relax for now."
Izuku furrowed his brows in confusion but nodded anyway, Riko walked off and Izuku looked to Hawks to see if he had any insight. Hawks had an uncharacteristically serious look on his face as he stared at Izuku, before Izuku could speak Hawks cut him off.
"They're testing you. They want to see if you can play nice with their top donors, if you aren't polite and respectful they'll punish you." He informed in a hushed whisper, Izuku was even more confused now. "They're going to try to hit on you, push your buttons, and maybe even try to take you down a few notches. You have to smile and nod along, no matter what they say."
Izuku cringed, old people hitting on him? Ew. Sure older men are fine but he had specific limits for the term "older." Izuku wanted to say no, he wasn't going to go along with this but the almost pleading look on Hawks' face made him nod and agree. Izuku was a master of masking his feelings, he could play nice with weird rich people for a couple of hours if it put Hawks at ease and got him to stop looking at Izuku like that.
-
"Alright Izuku, I got someone that wants to meet you," Riko whispered leaning over the back of the couch and gripping Izuku's shoulder. Izuku glanced over at Hawks who subtly nodded at him, Izuku pushed himself off the couch and steadied himself on his crutches before following Riko across the large room.
More people had filed in while Izuku was zoning out on the couch, Riko led him through the small crowd of people and to a catering table where a tall man with grey hair and almost neon green eyes stood watching them approach. Izuku felt uneasy under his unwavering gaze, there was something off putting about the man but Izuku couldn't put a finger on it.
"You must be Izuku Midoriya," the man greeted as Izuku and Riko stopped in front of him. Izuku took in the man's top of the line suit, perfectly tailored to fit him, and the way his hair was slicked back with no strand out of place.
"Yes sir," Izuku smiled remembering Hawks plead, the man seemed pleased with his response and held out his hand. Izuku took it and shook it firmly before retracting it.
"Pretty little thing, aren't you?" The man murmured reaching out and running a finger along Izuku's jaw.
Izuku had to restrain himself from cringing and pulling away from his touch as his stomach dropped. His eyes flicked over to Riko but the man was no help, Riko stood with his arms crossed and a polite smile on his face, ignoring Izuku's subtly pleading gaze.
"I think you have a bright future here with the commission, if you ever need some extra help with anything call me." The man pulled back seemingly not sensing Izuku's unease and fished a card from his pocket.
Izuku was glad it was over as he took the card, he didn't get the man's name and honesty he didn't want it. He turned to Riko and murmured, "I'm going to go to the bathroom."
Riko nodded but grabbed his shoulder before Izuku could hobble off, "Look Izuku, In-ho didn't mean anything by the pretty comment, you know guys like him, every inside thought becomes an outside thought."
Izuku bit his cheek and nodded, even with Riko assuring him that the man meant nothing by the comment it didn't take away the uncomfortable feeling. Riko patted his shoulder and sent him on his way, Izuku huffed as he walked through the room and out the door feeling eyes on him as he went.
He sighed when the door closed and the feeling of being watched went away only to be startled by a loud voice calling his name.
"Midoriya! There's my favorite rockstar!" Hizashi hollered waving his arm at Izuku with a bright grin on his face. Izuku offered a polite smile and wave as he started towards the stairs. "Woah, you're not gonna go down those yourself are you?"
Hizashi quickly walked towards him and Izuku huffed his polite smile becoming more genuine. "Hey I've done it before I can do it again," Izuku chuckled as he moved to take a step down the stairs but Hizashi stopped him by putting a hand to his chest.
"Woah Rockstar, you're not falling down the stairs on my watch." Izuku furrowed his brows and looked at the man confused.
"What-" Before Izuku could finish his question Hizashi was scooping him up like a princess and starting down the stairs. Izuku squeaked in embarrassment as his arms wrapped around Hizashi's shoulders. "What the fuck man?"
"Just think of me as your personal chauffer," Hizashi hummed, Izuku tried burying his burning face in Hizashi's neck but was blocked by the man's directional speaker so he opted to hide his face in the worn leather of Hizashi's jacket. "What were you doing up in a private box, shouldn't you be with the rest of 3A?"
Izuku swallowed harshly, Present Mic asked too many questions. His hands picked at the leather and Hizashi glanced down at him.
"You don't have to answer that, only curious," Hizashi looked back in front of him as they hit the landing, "where you off to little listener?"
Izuku expected to be dropped like earlier, he braced himself with a screwed-up face only to feel himself being gently lowered to the floor. Hizashi held him tightly as he lowered him onto his good foot and gripped the back of Izuku's blazer while the boy got his crutches situated.
"Bathroom," Izuku muttered fixing the crutch pad under his armpit.
"Well come find me when you're done, I'll give you a ride upstairs." Hizashi grinned pointing finger guns at Izuku.
"Aren't you supposed to be doing something, like whatever made you come downstairs?" Izuku tilted his head and Hizashi's bright grin turned a bit sheepish.
"Aizawa kicked me out of the commentary box, I'm "being a pain in his ass," as he says," Hizashi made air quotes with his fingers making Izuku snicker. "Figured I'd take a walk and then I ran into you! So being a personal chauffeur gives me something to do while I'm in time out."
"Alright, alright, I'll come find you but you gotta warn me before you pick me up next time." Izuku waved him off and turned on his crutch.
"You got it, boss," Hizashi gave him a salute and quickly walked over to stand by the stairs.
