OLIVIA MERIDAN WAS A KOOK. That was obvious to everyone, especially those residing or, even worse, from on the southside of Outer Banks. Well, that's what everyone else said, but a couple of months spent with Kiara Carrera in the ninth grade taught her all that peace and love stuff and since then Ollie had been entirely neurotic about it. Sure, there had been that big falling out with Kie and Sarah Cameron, but the peace and love shit stuck.
That could only go so far, really, couldn't it? It was a whole lot of good to no one, complaining about Topper or Kelce beating up some Pogue when Olivia's day-to-day life began and ended in a mansion on Figure Eight, with the in-between being filled with yacht days, hair appointments and dinner at the country club. There would be holidays to the Hamptons, the Camerons' property in the Bahamas, over to Europe on occasion, maids and chefs and drivers and planes and boats. A Kook through and through.
And that was what was expected of her. It wasn't one of those difficult, hard-to-achieve portrayals of the American dream like it had been for the Carreras. Ollie had been born into riches like so many others on the north side of Kildare; Preston Meridan was a construction mogul, and alongside Ward Cameron, they curated a business together - both on the island and the mainland - that would provide them with millions; more than enough for a comfortable life for themselves, and their families for generations to come.
Preston hadn't built the empire that would guide his lifestyle, its origins lay within his father, and was passed down to him when he passed away. Soon after, he reunited with a former classmate, Serena, and their first daughter arrived. Olivia was joined by Isabella and their perfect family had their perfect life in their perfect home on Figure Eight. The relationship Preston had with Ward Cameron was not just business either, and the perfect family life was lived alongside his family too. Ollie and Sarah Cameron were the same age, as were Izzy and Wheezy and it all just seemed destined to be.
Midsummers at the country club, events at the Academy, fundraisers on their estates, scuba lessons and sailing. All in nice clothes. Nice food, nice cars, nice boats. Everything new, everything cleaned, everything perfect. Everything was as Preston had planned.
And then Serena Meridan died, and the idea of perfection became skewed. Everything that Preston had worked for somehow dissipated all at once. It was a boat crash, which led to an aneurysm and led to a lawsuit and ultimately led to Ollie becoming a little... less than perfect.
Her friendship with Sarah Cameron may initially have forced upon the two girls - they were similar in age so of course they had to be friends. But at one point it had become real, and with the death of Serena they seemed to have become closer than ever. Until something changed. Until Ollie changed. Cold and elusive, locked in her room, skipping school, ignoring the phone calls from her friends, not speaking to anyone unless she had to.
And with the sudden realities of being a single parent to the two girls, Preston found it increasingly hard to deal with. At the beginning, he didn't. They all said it was grief, or something, and that it would mellow out and go away with time. But it didn't, and much to his chagrin and complete inability to understand the mind of a teenage girl, he had to deal with it.
By the time it came to the summer after Ollie turned seventeen, his efforts seemed to have worked. Therapy and medication had led to some kind of difference, and despite the fact that her friends had introduced her to the world of drinking and partying for days, Preston would take as much as he could get.
That was the summer when everything was supposed to be perfect again. But somehow, it seemed to be the summer when everything changed.

❛ AUTHOR'S NOTE ━━ I don't own any rights to Outer Banks (obviously), however, I do own Ollie's character and all the characters created to help her storyline progress. Obviously, all warnings for this book are according to the events of the show, with additional mentions of tricky parental relationships, eating disorders, abandonment issues, anxiety, other mental health issues in accordance to Ollie and other characters as well as some mature content.
Rafe is a considerably contentious character, and this fic is not going to ignore how bad some of his actions are seeing as he can be a complete psycho, but I've been thinking of doing a Rafe fic for a while now and hopefully I'll do his entirely complex characterisation some kind of justice.
Hope you enjoy <33
