Platonic!fluff/angst (IF YOU SQUINT)
Day 1
Sanemi stared down at the flimsy piece of paper his crow had left on his futon. Genya had been deployed on a two week mission with the Kamado boy and his companions. With a kiss of his teeth and a roll of his lavender eyes, the hashira crumbled the paper in between his scarred hands and threw it out the window, not even bothering to read its contents. He didn't have time for sickeningly sweet "I miss you's," or "how are you doing's?" unlike his younger brother, he cared about his duties and didn't disobey orders he's given.
"That damn boy.." he grumbled. Sanemi shooed away the crow perched on the windowsill. His gaze drifted to a thriving patch of pretty daffodils growing near the steps of his Wind Estate. There was a small portion of the patch that had been flattened to the shape of a footprint. It was left there after that day. Sanemi made a mental note to have a Kakushi replant the flowers somewhere they wouldn't get stepped on.
Silence filled the forest. A tall teenage boy stood in front of the Wind Estate with his head bowed slightly in respect. Sanemi sat criss crossed on the engawa, looking not so glad to see the boy. Genya's adam apple bobbed when he gulped. His mouth opened and closed like a fish but no words actually came out.
"N-nemi?"
Sanemi inhaled sharply, a vein appearing on his forehead. "I've told you not to fucking call me that. What the hell do you want this time?!" Genya flinched at his brother's words but spoke. "I'm going o-on a mission... with my friends. I just..w-wanted to say bye before I le-"
Sanemi cut him off and shooed him away with his hand. "Yeah yeah sure. Go away now. Maybe if this demon kills you you'll learn in your next life to stay out of things that are too STRONG for you to handle." he spat. Genya kept his eyes on the ground and walked off towards the Butterfly Estate to get ready for his mission. On the way back, he stepped on some daffodils. Sanemi yelled incoherently about how Genya's bratty self ruined his flowers.
Sanemi opened his eyes after recovering from the small flashback. He'd give Genya a piece of his mind when he came back.
Day 4
"Tch, pathetic demons." Sanemi threw his nichirin blade to the ground and kicked off his zori sandals. His latest mission was tiring. He'd asked the Kakushi servants to draw him a hot bath. Out of habit he reached onto his futon bed and prepared to grab his daily letter to throw it out. Sanemi turned his attention to the bed when he felt nothing but his covers. "No..letter?" he thought. That was weird. Genya always sent a letter around this time. "Why the hell am I even sad? I could care less about that burden's letters."
Still, something bothered Sanemi.
Day 8
"Shit shit shit shit..."Sanemi paced back and forth, running his fingers through his white hair. Four days had passed since he stopped getting letters. Why wasn't Genya writing him anymore? Did he finally give up? Maybe he was busy with the mission? What if..he's dead? No. Sanemi shook his head to get rid of the thought. A crow would have announced his death if that was the case.
Day 11
It had been a whole week since he last got a letter. The other pillars struggled in keeping Sanemi calm. He was a ticking time bomb of anger. One wrong word and he went into a flying rage. Shinobu assured him that Genya was fine only for Sanemi to deny being worried. He was constantly checking for more letters. "DAMMIT WHERE ARE THEY?!" screamed Sanemi as he chucked one of his training dummies into the air. His frustration only grew when it landed into a tree. "FUCKING HELL!"
The Kakushi watched from his estate in fear and concern.
Day 15
"CAW CAW CAW! KAMADO-SAN AND HIS COMPANIONS HAVE RETURNED GRAVELLY INJURED."
Sanemi jerked upwards in his spot. "They're back.." He thought. The male watched some crows fly overhead and sprinted back to the Butterfly Estate as fast as he could, his heart pounding in his ears. "Please please please Kami hear my prayers please tell me this boy didn't get himself killed!" Sanemi muttered.
The shoji doors slammed open and the butterfly servants scurried out of the way as Sanemi barged into rooms with flare nostrils searching for Genya. Shinobu smiled with her eyebrows furrowed, a vein bulging on her forehead. "Ara ara, Shinazugawa-san. It's not nice to barge in unannounced. Don't do it again, mmk?" she asked. Sanemi rolled his eyes and pushed her out the way. "I don't give a fuck WHERE IS HE?!"
Shinobu seemed on the verge of beating Sanemi up, her fake smile only growing while she wiped the spit off her cheeks. "You're lucky I don't have the energy to scold you properly Shinazugawa-san. For that, I won't tell you." the insect hashira skipped out of the room and went about her day. "WHAT? YOU LITTLE BITCH GET BA-"
"Ughh..why is it so loud? Can't you be quiet?"
Sanemi whipped around, steam pouring out his ears. The voice was groggy and therefore he didn't recognize it. "THE HELL DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME YOU MOTHERFUCKER? DO YOU KNOW WHAT RANK I AM?!" he slammed open the door to the connected room and prepared to yell someone's ears off when he caught a grisly sight.
Genya was laying on the bed, bandages covering his naked torso. Bruises littered his arms and and there was a long, bloody gash on his chest that seeped through the bandages. His face was battered but the swelling in his cheek was going down. Aoi came in and explained that Genya would survive and his face would return to normal.
Sanemi stood at his bedside, holding his hand. "You're a dumbass you know that? You could have gotten killed." he scoffed but nonetheless silently thanked the heavens for returning his little brother safe and sound. "Pfttt. You know you love me." Genya smiled mischievously. "Let me tell you all about it. It was amazing! The demon had an eye on its STOMACH and it had two brother demons with it and we all fought and Inosuke kept slashing and stabbing!"
Sanemi chuckled and quietly listened to Genya ramble on and on about his adventure.
