✸ REAL LIFE . . .
as atarah approached the third event of the night, she was stopped by johnny, who had been searching for her. he spoke with a mixture of concern and annoyance, "you were supposed to be here fifteen minutes ago. your sister is already here."
atarah knew she had made a mistake by being late, but she tried to play it off with a casual demeanor. she smiled and shrugged, trying to downplay the situation. "i know, i'm sorry for being late," she said apologetically. "i was looking for my dad."
atarah asked with a hint of concern in her voice, "seen him?" johnny raised an eyebrow and replied casually, "he stepped out. i guess he got caught up with something."
atarah's worry only grew as she heard Johnny's nonchalant response. daniel's absence seemed to be of little concern to him, which only fueled atarah's growing unease.
atarah and sam exchanged a puzzled glance as Johnny casually dismissed the situation as, "probably for the best." atarah couldn't help but feel a pang of concern.
as the third event of the sekai taikai began, the competitors took their positions on their respective platforms, preparing for the challenge ahead. their focus was on staying balanced while simultaneously attempting to push their opponents off their platforms, knowing that once they fell, they would be eliminated from the event that night.
the air was thick with anticipation, as the contestants knew that this event could be crucial in determining their overall rank in the tournament. they exchanged glances, sizing up their opponents and mentally preparing for the upcoming struggle.
johnny began talking about taking charge and doing things differently, but atarah barely paid attention. she was too busy scanning the competitors from other dojos, her gaze suddenly fixed on someone staring at her.
their intense gaze caught her off guard, but she quickly composed herself and feigned a casual smile before turning her attention back to johnny. however, the sight of the mysterious competitor continued to linger in her mind, leaving her feeling unsettled.
atarah recognized kwon jae-sung, the male captain of cobra kai, and felt a wave of awkwardness as he continued to stare at her intently without any hesitation.
his unwavering gaze made her feel self-conscious, and she wondered why he was focusing on her. the intense stare from the talented competitor from a rival dojo made her uneasy, but she tried to hide her discomfort behind a confident facade.
johnny's voice interrupted atarah's thoughts. "larusso, you listening?" he asked, noticing her lack of attention. atarah flinched and responded with a half-hearted, "huh, oh yeah sure."
johnny rolled his eyes, recognizing her lack of focus. he then said with determination, "no more waiting around like scared little bitches." atarah tried to look interested though she had zoned out earlier and had no idea what he was talking about at first, so she simply nodded along as he continued to explain his plan.
johnny's tone was firm and without any trace of mercy as he gave the instructions to Atarah, "alright? you go at them, aggressive, knock them down." sam and atarah exchanged a concerned look as they heard johnny's orders.
sam then spoke up, looking at him "those platforms are pretty narrow, my dad would want balance." johnny's expression remained unchanged. he responded firmly, "yeah, well, your dad's not here. all right?."
johnny's voice was filled with energy as he announced, "it's time for us to score some points." atarah and sam exchanged a look, both of them knew that without daniel's calm energy, they were likely going to lose this event. however, they tried to hide their doubts and maintain a brave facade.
the organizer's voice rang out, announcing the first duel, "sora haruto from hirobukan on platform one." the name was met with a collective look of determination on the competitor's faces. "devon lee from miyagi-do on the second platform."
johnny walked over to devon, "alright, don't let me down, lee." devon stood up a little straighter, feeling the weight of the expectation. she gave him a determined nod, "yes, sensei."
the first round was finally over, and the miyagi-do dojo was in their locker room, feeling dejected. both devon and robby had lost their matches, all because they decided to follow Johnny's aggressive advice of "hit first" and "be aggressive."
the disappointment in the locker room was palpable as they all silently acknowledged their mistake.
johnny's voice held a hint of annoyance as he spoke, "keep going like that, and we'll get eliminated tonight." he paused for a moment before continuing in a more serious tone
"some of you will be able to put this behind you, but some of you will carry this with you for the rest of your lives." the weight of the failure and the consequences loomed heavily over the locker room, leaving the team in a pensive mood.
johnny's frustration boiled over as he yelled out, "what's wrong with you guys? where's your fight? aren't you going to stand up for yourselves?"
sam's anger finally exploded, and she matched his volume, "you keep blaming us as if this isn't your fault too." the tension in the locker room reached its peak, with johnny and sam both letting out their pent-up anger and frustration.
in the heat of the argument, sam expressed her frustration, "if dad was there, we never would've lost like that!" johnny responded with a cold tone, "yeah, well, he didn't show up."
sam's anger took the best of her, and she snapped back, "probably because of you!" sam's voice was cold as she looked directly at johnny, her anger barely contained.
"you keep disrespecting him, trying to prove that your way is better." devon, feeling protective of johnny, spoke up in defense, "hey! don't talk to my sensei like that."
the tense atmosphere in the locker room was almost palpable, as everyone waited to see how the argument would unfold.
sam's annoyance was evident in her voice as she met devon's gaze. "your sensei got you knocked off the board in ten seconds." devon, feeling caught off guard, tried to stand her ground, but sam's cold tone made her falter.
"i'd sit down if I were you." devin, realizing her mistake, sat down immediately, a mixture of shock and embarrassment on her face. sam continued, her tone biting, "you're not helping us. i don't even know how you made this team."
the locker room fell silent after sam's harsh words. the tension in the air was thick, and the weight of the argument hung heavily on everyone's shoulders.
eyes darted among the team members, each of them processing the sting of Sam's criticism and the impact of the intense exchange.
the silence in the locker room was deafening, until demetri spoke up with a casual tone, "well, i, for one, will be putting this behind me when I'm off to mit."
hawk's annoyance was evident, snapped back "shut the fuck up about mit!" demetri's comment stung, adding an extra layer of tension to the already charged atmosphere.
hawk's voice was cold as he spoke, "some of us care about winning the tournament. it would be nice if you did, too." robby, trying to bring some rationality to the situation, spoke up, "guys , can we cool it? this isn't helping."
robby's calm demeanor stood in stark contrast to the tension that hung in the air, his plea for focus a reminder of the task they were all here to accomplish.
miguel's voice carried an undertone of frustration as he spoke, "maybe you should listen to your own advice." robby, already on edge, snapped back at miguel, "got something to say?"
miguel, meeting robby's gaze with equal intensity, responded firmly, "i already did." the exchange only heightened the already charged atmosphere in the locker room, as the team's internal conflicts bubbled closer to the surface.
as the team members filtered out of the locker room, miguel stormed out first, followed by the others who exited the room with a sense of resignation. atarah, walking slowly, was the last one out, now alone in the hallway.
atarah's mind preoccupied with frustration and sadness, walked down the hallway alone, completely absorbed by her thoughts.
her feet guided her as she mindlessly navigated through the hall. in her distracted state, she didn't bother looking where she was going and accidentally walked straight into someone.
"oh, i'm so sorry i didn't mean to-" atarah's apology faded as she looked up, meeting the gaze of the person she had just bumped into.
recognition dawned upon her face, and an annoyed expression washed over her features, her eyes narrowing as she realized who it was.
kwon smirked, he spoke up with a casual, almost mocking tone. "for what? go ahead and continue." atarah, already feeling frustrated, met his gaze with a steely expression. "i'm not in the mood," she said firmly, the annoyance evident in her voice.
kwon seemed to relish the opportunity to rile her up, unfazed by her irritation. he leaned in slightly, his smirk growing wider. "not in the mood? what's got you so worked up?"
atarah bristled at his nonchalance, her annoyance growing even further. she met his gaze with a cold glare, her irritation clear in her eyes. "it's none of your damn business" she snapped back, her tone sharp and dismissive.
kwon chuckled at her defensiveness, clearly enjoying getting under her skin. he tilted his head slightly, his smirk never leaving his face. "oh, come on, don't be like that. i'm just making conversation."
atarah rolled her eyes, frustrated by his attempts to rile her up. "conversation? right. as if you're interested in anything other than bothering me."
kwon put a hand to his chest, feigning offense. "me? bothering you? i would never do such a thing." he couldn't hold back his smirk, clearly finding her irritation amusing.
kwon's smirk morphed into a taunting smile, as he mockingly spoke with fake concern. "what? did your sensei say something that got you all riled up? or is it because you guys lost again?" he couldn't resist the opportunity to rub it in her face, clearly enjoying getting under her skin.
atarah clenched her jaw, fighting back the anger that threatened to surface. she knew he was provoking her, but she couldn't help but feel triggered by his words. "you know what? shut the hell up. you're not worth my time" she said coldly, her voice filled with irritation.
kwon's smile widened further, clearly relishing the effect his words were having on her. "ooh, touchy. seems like i hit a nerve there." he paused for a moment, his eyes scanning her annoyed expression before he continued, "you know, you're cute when you're mad."
atarah, having lost her patience with kwon's relentless taunts, rolled her eyes and walked away without uttering a word. itwas only the second day of tournament, and yet kwon had already found a way to get under her skin with his annoying presence.
