FOUR, a pointless grudge
MORGAN SAT silently, like a cat, on the Sturniolos kitchen counter. Her body was shivering from the cold. While warm, salty tears ran down her face. She had "the dream" again.
She didn't know how or why this dream came to her, she was only an infant at the time of the occurrence but she couldn't help but question if her mom's death was her own fault.
Of course, the triplets knew about "the dream." They were the first people she had told, though Marion and Giovani, who were asleep on the floor in Chris's room, had no clue about this recurring dream.
The more Morgan thought about it the more her breathing fastened pace. Was her mother already that sick of her? Was she too much work? So many reasons to think twice.
She held her palm to her lips to silence her oncoming sobs. There was no way she would allow herself to cry loudly and disturb everyone, it was pointless. Almost nobody could calm her "the dream" panic attacks.
Except for Matthew Sturniolo.
There was no way on earth Morgan thought she would gain the confidence to wake the poor boy up. She held her knees up to her chest and rocked herself around slowly, shutting her eyes and focusing on her breathing.
Her raggedy breaths would not stop, causing her to panic even more. They normally always stopped after focusing on her breathing. She let out a squeak of a sob, tugging on the roots of her hair.
Panic and anxiety were rushing through her body to the point where Morgan couldn't breathe. The only thing she felt was the hot tears continuously falling off her cheeks and down her neck, along with the closing in of her throat.
Now the only options she had left was to either continue to panic until she passes out or she could go down the hall and wake up Matt.
Morgan did not feel like going through the feeling of ringing in her ears and her vision slowly blacking out, so she quietly crept into Matt's room.
The girl said nothing but instead climbed under the warm sheets. Matt's eyes shot open and then squinted to make out who was next to him. Morgan let out a shaky breath, her bottom lip trembling as tears kept flowing.
"I'm sorry," she whispered. Matt widened his eyes and pulled her into his chest. He rested his chin over her soft hair and rubbed her back in a comforting manner.
Morgan finally felt her breathing go back to normal as she listened to the beat of Matthews's heart and the pace of his breath. She rested her head on his shoulder as they lay down, facing the ceiling.
This time, Morgan fell asleep but Matt stayed awake. Wondering why she had come to him so upset. That was until it struck him that she had had "the dream." He sighed quietly, falling back to sleep with his mind still racing.
Morgan woke up to four obnoxiously loud voices arguing over something before the shutter of a camera went off.
"Jeez, took you long enough to take it!"
"If you weren't up my ass about how to take photos the whole time it would've happened faster!"
Morgan instantly recognized these two voices, she also then heard two other laughs that she recognized. The brunette girl slowly opened her eyes, jumping at the sight of Christopher Sturniolo's face looking right at hers.
"Oh, my days, Chris!" She whisper yelled. Glancing back at Matt to make sure she didn't wake him up.
Chris giggled, moving back to stand next to Nick and Giovani. Morgan looked at Marion with curious eyes, wondering why they were all gathered in Matt's room.
"Get up, Morgie! We wanna go roller skating," Giovani whined, pouting at the sleepy girl.
"Chris, Matt and Nick can't roller skate for shit," she chuckled.
Nick scoffed, but then silently agreed. Morgan tried to slowly remove Matts arm from around her waist but only ended up being pulled further in.
"Matt. Let go," she rolled her eyes. Matt faked a cry and hid his face in her back.
"I don't wanna go anywhere," he whined loudly.
"Stop being lazy, Matty B!"
With enough force, Morgan rolled off of the bed and landed on the hard, wooden floor with a grunt. Chris laughed at her loudly, falling onto the floor from his own laughter. Morgan rolled her eyes, standing up and turning to face Matthew.
"I'm not lazy."
"Sure," Morgan shrugged, a cheeky grin plastered on her face.
What she didn't realize is that the sleepy boy didn't take her comment as a joke but instead took it personally and began to hold a grudge.
Morgan exited the room along with the fully dressed four and made her way to Nicolas's room to pick out an outfit of the day (she always left spare clothes in his room). She picked out a roller skating appropriate outfit and walked into the kitchen, leaning onto Chris's back.
"Where's Matt?" Nick asked her confused.
The girl shrugged, thinking he would've been up and ready by now. Morgan stood up straight and made her way back to Matt's room.
"Matt? Come on," She quietly said, knocking on the door before entering. The boy was sitting on his bed, fully dressed, scrolling through his phone. He looked up to see Morgan and quickly shut off his phone.
"We can't leave if you're not driving," she added, the boy obviously hadn't gotten the hint.
Matt nodded, leaving the room without a word. Morgan furrowed her eyebrows but followed behind him, not wanting to be left at home.
"Let's go."
Nick, Marion and Giovani instantly jumped in the backseats of the minivan while Morgan and Chris wrestled over the passenger seat. As usual.
"Morgan just let Chris sit there," Matt spoke grumpily. The girl lifted her hands in surrender, muttered an apology to Chris and climbed into the back next to Marion.
"What's wrong with you today, brother?" Chris asked Matt.
Matt shook his head, starting the engine and driving off. Nick and Morgan shared a confused look but stayed quiet.
"Chris play some music!"
"If you insist," Chris chuckled, connecting his phone to the aux cord. He clicked on the shuffle button on his playlist, instantly getting hype about the song.
Morgan clapped in excitement, bopping her head along to the beat of the song.
It wasn't long until the six arrived at the roller-rink. Marion squealed in excitement and dragged Giovani and Nick with her to wait in the line to get admission.
"I'm so scared, bro," Chris jumped around while shaking Morgan's shoulders.
Morgan March laughed before holding his shoulders so he would stop jumping everywhere.
"I'll hold your hand, Chrissy," Nick teased. Giovani and Marion laughed loudly at the nickname, laughing more as Chris went along with the joke and turned it around to scare Nick.
"Shut up," Matt groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose.
Morgan pursed her lips with amused eyes, the rest of the group looking elsewhere to hold in their laughs.
They paid for their roller skates and walked into the main rink, finding a space on the bleachers to put their stuff down and put on their skates. Marion, Nick, Giovani and Matt all began to skate with (mostly) ease.
Chris went in last, with Morgan holding his hand (obviously done by bribery) and was cursing under his breath the whole walk to even get inside the rink.
"Christopher, there are children!" Morgan scolded jokingly. Chris rolled his eyes, shrugging.
"It's not my fault they were born ten years too late."
Morgan chuckled at his comment and stepped onto the rink floor, helping Chris onto the floor too. Chris held tightly onto her hand at the start but immediately let go as it "wasn't even scary,".
Morgan skated over to where Matt was slowly gliding around and excitedly hugged his arm.
"What?"
She was confused about his reaction, normally he'd hug her back but for some unknown reason, he was in a bad mood.
"Matty," she dragged out, standing in front of him now. "What's going on?"
"Nothing, jeez," Matt replied, avoiding her worried eyes.
Morgan sighed, turning around to skate away. She made her way to where Marion was secretly snapping photos of Nick and Giovani who were holding hands while joking around and skating.
"No way!" Morgan gasped in excitement.
"Way!"
The pair of girls skated around for a long time until their feet hurt. Morgan waddled off the floor and sat by where her tote bag was. She was the first one off the floor but Nick wasn't far behind her.
"My feet hurt like a bitch!" Nick groaned, untying the laces on the skates. Morgan nodded in agreement.
The pair changed into their shoes and patiently waited for the rest of the group to do so. Finally, they could leave the place.
"I call shotgun!" Morgan called out, speeding in front of Chris to jump into the front seat. Chris yelled out in protest but climbed into the back.
Matt was silently waiting for everyone to clip in the seatbelts while he scrolled on his phone, liking a few fan edits while he was at it.
"Where to next, Matty?" Morgan excitedly asked.
"Ooh, let's go to Barnes and Nobel!" Nick yelled from the back.
Morgan agreed enthusiastically, not feeling the need to point out that the boy barely reads.
"Can't we just go home?" Matt asked, rubbing his tired eyes.
Morgan's smile slowly faded, she bit her cheek from saying something rude and shrugged instead.
"If you want to."
Nick whined from behind Matthew, complaining about how he "loved the energy in Barnes and Nobel,".
"Fine, let's take a vote. Who wants to go to Barnes and Nobel?" Nick questioned, being too stubborn to just let Matt take him home.
Everyone's hands shot straight up, except Matt and Morgan. The March girl half-raised her hand, worried for what Matt would say.
"Majority rules, Matt!"
Morgan sighed, shooting Matt a sympathetic smile and then Nick a playful glare through the review mirror.
"Whatever," Matt rolled his eyes, driving in the direction of the bookstore.
Morgan sat in silence, listening to the four in the back talk about who their favorite Avengers are. She slowly lifted her head up to glance at Matt but immediately looked away as the boy turned his head to glare at her.
What is his problem?
Once the six teenagers arrived at the store, Morgan decided to pull Matt away from the group. Nick, Giovani and Chris had gone to the sofas to goof around and Marion went straight to the romance section.
As Morgan pretended to look for a book, tracing her fingers over the spines, she quickly grabbed Matthew by his hoodie sleeve and pulled him behind the dystopian shelves.
"What the fuck?!" He whisper yelled, spinning to see who grabbed him.
"Jesus! It's just me," Morgan widened her eyes in fear at how spooked she made the boy.
Her hands were raised in surrender as her eyebrows anxiously furrowed. She muttered an apology and turned back around and grabbed out a random book off the shelf which just so happened to be one of her favorites, The Maze Runner.
She opened the first page pretending to be interested, though she had already read the book over fifteen times and Matt knew that.
"Morgan," he spoke softly, standing behind her.
The girl ignored him, holding the book closer to her face, hoping he would get the hint. Matt knew she was upset with his attitude but didn't give up. He slowly took the book out of her hands and slid it back onto the shelf.
"Morgan. Seriously," he sighed, holding her shoulders and turning her to face him.
She avoided his eyes at all costs, there was no getting out of this now.
"What, Matthew?"
Uh oh. Matt knew she was really upset now. He let go of her shoulders, shoving his hands into his hoodie pocket.
"What were you going to say?" He asked her, watching as she began to crack her fingers.
"Nothing. It's— never mind," she sighed, flashing a fake smile at him before trying to walk off.
Matt gently grabbed her wrist, stopping her from continuing to avoid him. It was his fault she was upset, and he was aware of that.
"C'mere," he sighed, pulling her in for a hug. Morgan rolled her eyes but willingly leaned into him, wrapping her arms around his waist.
"I'm sorry, Moe. I took you seriously when you called me lazy, I know it's stupid but I was tired and my brain was not functioning properly."
Morgan giggled into his chest, pulling out of the hug.
"It's okay, Matty. Please tell me if that happens again, okay? I love you," she grinned.
"I will, I will. I love you too, or whatever," he rolled his eyes playfully.
