chapter one. life is fluid

Jay sits on the edge of his and Sam's bed and slightly nudges her to wake up, "Sam, baby"

"Mmm..." Sam groans, turning to her left side from her right.

"I got called into work"

"Okay. Be careful and go save some lives" Sam whispers, with her eyes closed.

"I will. I love you"

"I love you too" Sam says, instantly falling back to sleep.

Jay lightly places his hand on Sam's belly and leans forward kissing it and whispers, "I love you too, baby Halstead"

Jay stands up and quietly leaves the bedroom, checking in on Denise, who is sound asleep. Jay then heads into the living room to grab his jacket and heads over to the 21st district.

Once Sam woke up and got dressed, she went into the kitchen to make herself and Denise some breakfast.

"Dee, breakfast is ready" Sam calls out to her foster daughter, who walks out of her room and sits down at the counter.

Sam placed a plate of pancakes and bacon in front of the girl, along with a glass of orange juice who says, "Thanks Sammy"

"You're welcome. You excited for your last week of eight grade?" Sam asks, picking up her own plate of breakfast goods and sitting next to Denise.

"Yes, finally. How's the baby?"

Sam places her hand on her stomach and smiles, "She's good. She's giving some good kicks. You wanna feel?"

Denise smiles and nods, placing her tiny hand on her foster moms belly and jumps a little when she felt a kick. "Oh my god, that's so cool"

After Sam dropped off Denise at school, she called Mouse and asked him to ping Erin's phone, so she can find her and talk to her.

A few minutes later, mouse gave Sam, Erin's location and she drove to a club and parked behind Erin's car and gets out to stand in front of it.

About twenty minutes later, Erin walked out of the club with a bunch of people and froze when she saw her best friend, standing next to her car with her arms folded.

"Sammy, what are you doing here?" She asks.

"I wanted to talk" Sam says, pushing herself off of he black colored car and walks over to her friend.

"There's nothing to talk about"

"Hank put you on four weeks furlough, which ends tomorrow by the way"

"So?" Erin asks and Sam rips the sunglasses off from the brunette's face. "Erin, listen to me. I know you're still broken up over Nadia's death and I know Bunny got into your head, but what about your health, what about your god daughter?"

"Sam, listen-" Lindsay starts to say, when Sam cuts her off. "No, you listen. I get why you're acting out, I do, but your a grown ass adult and a godmother now, if you forgot. So, get your shit together and come back to work as the Erin Lindsay, that I've loved and respected since I was fifteen"

Sam walks away back to her jeep, leaving behind a stunned Erin.

Sam walks down to the roll up at the district, after being caught up on the case by Hank.

"I really wish someone else was doing this" Sam says, fixing the collar on Jay's shirt.

"I'll be fine, baby. I promise" Jay says, kissing his girlfriend on her forehead, letting it linger a little bit longer than usual, but neither really minded.

Adam enters the room with an evidence bag full of money and says, "Alright, a hundred grand in small bills from the 1505 fund, baby" then he tosses it over to Jay.

"I look like Mr. Uptown or what?"

"Oh, you look the part" Ruzek says, then looks over at Sam, "So, how is my niece doing today?"

"She's great. I'm ready for her to be here already. Two more months" Sam smiles and Adam walks past her and puts his hand on her shoulder for reassurance for the meet, cause he knows how nervous she is, and then heads over to Kevin.

"Okay, here we go" Voight says, walking into the room with Antonio not far behind, "Benji just confirmed the location of the meet. He's gonna intro Halstead to Derek as a potential buyer who can expand his market into the northside. We get a deal on camera, we'll move in"

"Where's the meet?" Jay asks.

"Main terminal at Midway"

"That's a lot of moving parts. Planes, trains, vehicles and a no fly zone over the airport" Dawson adds.

"Hey, it's Derek Keyes. We'll make it work" Jay says.

"That's right, let's do it" Hank says, as the team follows him out to their cars. Sam grabs onto her boyfriend's wrist and says, "Jay"

"Yeah"

"Please, be careful. I'm not gonna lose you"

"Hey" Jay says, placing his hands on Sam's cheeks, caressing them as he looks into her beautiful brown eyes, "You're not gonna lose me, okay? I promised I'd protect you until the end of time and I meant that. It's going to be fine"

Jay leans down and kisses Sam on her lips and grabs her hand, interlacing his fingers with hers as they head out of the district.

Dawson, Ruzek and Atwater are in one vehicle watching the camera visual -a camera that was put on Jay earlier that day by mouse- on a tablet, while Hank, Sam and Al are in another vehicle listening only to audio.

"Is that camera up and running yet?" Voight questions, over the radio.

"Yeah. Sir, we got the audio-visual up and running" Ruzek answers.

The team watches and listens as someone in a dark green hoodie passes an envelope to Benji and they hear a faint, 'who was that' from Jay.

"Sarg, you want us to follow that guy?" Adam asks, still over the radio.

"No. Stay with Halstead"

Meanwhile, Jay and Benji walk through the airport, past security and down another hallway when Jay stops and says, "Yo, this wasn't the plan"

"Listen, you wanna meet Derek, it could be now or never"

"Alright, I'm rolling with this" Jay says, more to the camera so the team could hear him clearly, then he follows after Benji to the back of the airport, where a couple smaller, private planes are stored.

After ten minutes of Derek, Benji and Jay conversating, the team hears a gunshot and Sam's heart sinks into her stomach, only being able to hear what was going on.

"Shots fired. Shots fired" Ruzek yelled into the radio and the team races out of their cars and through the airport, only to be stopped security.

"Hey, hey stop right there!" One of the security officers yelled, drawing his weapon at the intelligence team.

"Listen, listen, we're CPD Intelligence. We got a guy behind this checkpoint" Adam says, showing his shield to the security guards.

"We gotta get through now" Voight shouts, "now!"

"Let them through" The guy says and the team races down the hall to the back, where Jay just was to see Benji dead on the floor and no sign of Derek or Jay.

"Central. CPD Intelligence" Dawson says, over the radio, "We got a DOA and an officer has been abducted"

A dry lump formed in Sam's throat at the thought of Jay being abducted. Adam pulls his friend into a tight hug, watching tears form in her eyes and says, "We'll find him Sam. We'll find him"

🌙🌙🌙

Back at the unit, Sam sits at her desk with her head buried in her hands thinking bout Jay, when Al and Hank walk up the stairs and are met with Dawson, Ruzek and Atwater.

"Sarg, this came from my CI. I'll take the hit" Dawson says.

"Where we at with the SUV?" Voight questions and Antonio sighs. "We've got all available patrol units searching. Problem is, there's no plates"

"What about the TSA badges they used to get pass security"

"The badges were stolen from several employees yesterday" Kevin says, "TSA didn't report them missing until this morning"

"How's Sam doing?" Al asks.

"Worried more than anything" Adam answers.

Sam combs her fingers through her hair and stands up walking away into the locker room.

Twenty minutes later, Sam leaves the locker room and walks over to her desk, only to see everyone gathered around Dawson's desk, watching something.

"What are you guys watching?" Sam asks.

"Do not come over here" Voight orders, but Sam disobeys and starts to waddle over to her co workers when Adam steps in front of her.

"What the hell is going on?" Sam questions then hears groans and screams coming from the computer, "Is that Jay?" she shoves past Adam and walks behind the desk to see two men in masks, beating and tasing her boyfriend and partner, who already has bruises all over his face and body.

"Oh my god, Jay" tears fall from Sams eyes, as she looks away and places her hands on her belly.

When Antonio stops the video, a burner phone rings and Hank picks it up, "Voight" while Adam pulls Sam into a hug.

"Your boy is good. He won't talk"

"What do you want?" Voight questions.

"I want all of Intelligences CI files, in exchange for your detective. Bring the CI files to the corner of 29th and california. Send a lone female officer. No cameras, no wires, no weapons. Just a girl with a file box. You'll make this drop tomorrow at nine a.m. or detective Halstead winds up fertilizing some cornfield in Indiana. We understand each other, Sergeant?" Derek Keyes demands then hangs up.

"What did he want?" Al asks. Hank sighs and says, "Halsteads life for our CI files"

"Well, it's easy right? We hand over the files, right?" Ruzek says and Sam tries to calm her breathing.

"There's over 100 CI's in our database" Dawson says, "A couple dozen are mine. Half got wives and kids. I'm not gonna have their blood on my hands if their names get leaked"

"So, you'd rather protect them and bury Jay?" Adam says, as Sam sits at her desk.

"Of course not!" Antonio says in a huff.

"What about Sam and the baby? What do you think will happen to them if Jay dies"

Antonio stands up from his desk and Adam gets closer, as Al intervenes, coming between the two and says, "Whoa, whoa, calm down guys"

"Well, we're not gonna let it get that far. Grab Mouse, start creating false files" Voight tells Dawson, walking towards the stairs.

"Where are you going?"

"For a drive and make sure Sam gets home, that's an order"

Al walks into the hall and dials Lindsay's number and she surprisingly picks up.

"Al, what's up?"

"I know, you're sorta on the outs, but I thought you should know Jay was kidnapped"

"Oh my god, how's Sammy?"

"How do you think?"

Sam is curled up on the couch with a hot chocolate in her hand, staring into space, when she hears a knock at her door, which she ignores.

"Sammy, open the door. I know you're in there" Kelly calls out from the other side of the door.

Sam gets up from the couch and heads into Denise's temporary room -until they find a house- to check on her. "Ready for bed, sweetheart? It's almost eleven"

"Yeah, I just gotta brush my teeth" Denise says.

"Okay, go brush your teeth, and I'll be in, in a minute to say goodnight"

"Okay" Denise says, getting up from her desk and walking to the bathroom.

Sam walks back into the living room, when she sees Kelly walk into the apartment -with the key she gave him when she first moved in-.

"When someone doesn't answer the door the first time, it usually means go away"

"Sammy, don't do that" Kelly says, following his best friend towards her bedroom.

"I'm not doing anything"

"You're trying to push me out. You did the same thing when your mom died"

Sam turns around in a huff, "Jay was kidnapped, Kelly and I'm trying my best to keep it together"

"That's why I'm here. To keep you company until they find him, I'm not leaving you alone. I told Boden and he understands"

"Great" Sam says, storming off into the now empty bathroom and shutting the door behind her.

"Kelly, what's wrong with Sam?" Denise asks, walking into the hall.

"It's Jay"

"What happened?"

"I wish I could explain it to you kiddo. Sam has to do that"

The next morning, Sam sits at the counter in her kitchen drinking a glass of oj -not having slept the night before-, when she hears her phone ding on the counter and she picks it up and sees a text from Adam -whos been telling her what's going on with the case-.

"Erin is here. She's going in as the female officer to get Jay back"

Sam places her phone back on the counter when Kelly walks in. "Alright, so, Denise is at school. You want to go grab something to eat at the diner?"

"No" Sam says, getting up from her seat and walks towards her bedroom, "I want Jay back" then she closes the door and sits on her bed and sobs.

"Daddy will come back, little one. He has too"

Two hours later, Kelly finally got Sam to eat something he got from the diner, plus a peanut butter cup shake as a surprise.

"I'm sorry, I've been acting like a jerk, Kells" Sam says, putting her head on her best friend's shoulder as the two sat on the couch and watch 'The Office'.

Sam then hears her phone ring and she quickly answers it knowing it must be Adam with hopefully good news. "Adam"

"We found him Sam. He's on his way to Chicago-" Before Ruzek could finish his sentence, Sam hangs up the phone and drags Kelly by his wrist and they head over to Chicago med.

After talking with Will Halstead, Sam rushes into Jay's hospital room, who is looking and picking at all the wires that's hooked up to him.

"Hi gorgeous"

Sam waddles over to her boyfriend and sits on the edge of the bed and pulls him into a hug and Jay winces a bit, but doesn't say anything, because he's just glad he has Sam back in his arms.

"I was so worried about you" Sam says, placing her right hand on her belly, "We both were. She was kicking like crazy"

Jay chuckles and places his left hand on top of Sams. "I'm okay"

"I thought I lost you forever"

"I told you. You will never, ever lose me, you got it? I am always going to protect you, whether you like it or not"

Sam nods her head, as she leans forward and kisses Jay on his amazingly soft lips.

"So, I got a week off" Jay says, leaning back on the bed, "Are you gonna take care of me?"

Sam chuckles and says, "Always, baby"

🌙🌙🌙

The next day, when Jay got discharged from the hospital, they headed back to the apartment and Sam helps her boyfriend get settled into bed so he can rest.

"Hey, where's Denise?" Jay asks.

"She's with Trudy and Mouch"

Jay was about to say something when there's a knock at the door. "Stay here and rest, I'll be back" Sam kisses Jay on his cheek and waddles to the front door.

Sam opens the door to reveal Erin, and she moves to the side to let her friend in, then she closes the door behind them and asks, "What are you doing here?"

"I came to say that...I know I messed up, Sammy. But please give me another chance to prove that I'm the best godmother ever"

Sam sighs and says, "Well, you did save Jay and I do want you to be in the baby's life"

"Yeah?"

"Yeah, but you have to promise that you're done with all the drugs and what not"

"I promise"

Sam smiles and pulls Erin into a hug, finally seeing Erin getting back to her old self.
