chapter eight. welcome to the family baby halstead

Jay walks into his and Sam's bedroom, taking his shirt off and throwing it into the laundry bin and opens the door to the bathroom to see his fiancé on the edge of the bathtub, bent over in pain.

"Sammy? What's wrong?" Jay asks, rushing to kneel next to Sam. Sam takes a deep breath and says, "My water just broke"

Jay eyes widen and says, "What?"

Sam looks up at Jay, trying to keep her breathing calm and not strangle him for doing this to her, "I said...my freakin' water just broke"

"Are you sure?" Jay questions, now in panic mode. Sam narrows her eyes and points to the puddle on the ground, "Yeah, I'm pretty sure"

"Oh my god. This is happening" Jay says, rushing into the bedroom to get the hospital bag from under the bed. Sam walks out of the bathroom and smiles at how panicked her fiancée is, while holding onto her stomach.

"Okay, everything's in the bag. I triple checked" Jay says, grabbing onto Sam's hand as they walk down the stairs. Jay grabs their coats, and they head out to his truck.

"Jay.."

"Yeah, baby" Jay says, helping Sam into the passenger side of the car.

"Don't you think we're forgetting something?"

Jay stares at his fiancée confused for a minute, "Denise"

Jay runs back into the house and up the stairs to grab Denise's sleeping figure, then runs back to the truck carrying his foster daughter bridal style and buckling her in the back seat.

"What's going on?" Denise asks, rubbing her eyes.

"My water broke, Dee. Gracie is gonna be here soon" Sam answers, taking deep breaths.

Denise sits up and says, "Oh my god, really?"

"Mmm" Sam hums, nodding her head.

Sam, Jay and Denise walk into Chicago Med, meeting up with Jay's brother, Will, who is bringing over a wheelchair for the girl.

"Hey guys. How are you feeling Sam?" Will asks.

"Like I wanna cry" Sam says, sitting down in the wheelchair.

"It's gonna be okay. We got the top doctors in the state here to help okay?" Will says and Sam nods her head, "Do you know how far apart the contractions are?"

"7 minutes I think"

"Okay, good. We got a little ways to go. I'm just gonna bring you to your room" Will says, pushing the wheelchair to a room, followed by Jay and Denise.

Once in the room, Jay helps Sam out of the wheelchair and onto the bed and asks, "How you doin' baby?"

"Good, I'm good" Sam says, controlling her breathing, "Dee, how are you doing?"

"I'm excited to meet Gracie" Denise smiles, standing next to her foster mother.

"Good. Us too" Sam smiles.

"I'm gonna go call everyone" Jay says, leaving the hospital room.

7 hours later...

Everyone from the 51 firehouse and the 21st district is gathered in the waiting room. Only the closest to Sam are in her room with her; Jay, Denise, Kelly, Erin, Hank, and Adam.

"I can't believe our god child is gonna be here soon" Erin smiles at Kelly who nods.

"I know. I don't think I've ever been more excited for something"

"How you feelin' Sammy" Hank asks, walking over to the brunette.

"Like I'm gonna explode. I need this baby outta me. Ahh" Sam screams, squeezing onto Jays hand.

The doctor walks into the room with another bed and a few nurses and asks, "Alright, Sam. You're three minutes apart. It's time"

"Finally" Sam says as the doctor and nurses help lift Sam onto the other bed and wheel her out followed by Jay.

"Good luck Sammy" Kelly shouts.

"Can't believe this is happening. We're getting a new addition to the 21st" Adam says.

"Yes we are Ruzek. Yes we are" Hank smiles.

As Sam is getting wheeled to the delivery room, they pass by the waiting room.

"It's time guys. Baby Gracie will be here soon" Jay smiles at everyone there waiting to meet the baby then rushes to follow Sam and his baby girl.

Two hours into labor, Sam screams at the pain, squeezing onto her fiancés hand and says, "I hate you Jay Halstead. How could you put me through this pain?!"

"I'm sorry baby! Ow, you're hurting my hand"

"You wanna feel real hurt? Get pregnant"

"A few more pushes Sam" the doctor says, "you're almost there"

"You're doing great baby" Jay says, brushing some of his fiancés sweaty hair back, that he could care less about then kisses her forehead.

"if she looks more like you then me, I'm gonna be pissed"

"You're just saying that right now..right baby?" Jay asks but Sam stays silent, then Jay starts to laugh nervously, "baby...right?"

"Yeah, totally" she rolls her eyes.

"I see the baby's head. A couple more pushes Sam!" The doctors says.

Sam pushes a couple more times, when they hear tiny cry's. The brunette then takes a deep breath and lays her head down on the bed.

The doctor stands up holding the baby as one of the nurses cuts the umbilical cord, then handing the baby to Sam who starts crying herself.

"You did it Sammy" Jay says, carefully placing his hand on top of his baby's head and kissing Sam's temple. Sam looks at Jay and smiles, "we did it. I mean yeah mostly me but you helped"

Jay and Sam laugh and one of the nurses comes over to take Gracie, "I'm gonna go clean her up and bring her right back"

"Do you have too?" Sam asks and the nurse nods her head.

10 minutes later, the nurse brings Gracie back in, now wrapped in a blanket and hands her back to Sam.

"Hi Gracie. It's your mama. I love you so freakin' much. And no one's gonna take you away from me. I promise" Sam says, kissing her newborns head.

Now back in her hospital room, Sam sits in her bed, cradling her newborn with Denise standing next to her and looking at her baby sister in awe when Jay walks into the room with Kelly, Erin, Hank and Adam.

"Guys" Sam smiles, "Meet Grace Nadia Halstead"

"Her middle name is Nadia?" Erin asks, tears gathering in her eyes. Sam nods her head and says, "yeah. She's named after two strong and independent woman"

"She's beautiful. Can I hold her?"

Sam nods her head, as she hands her newborn to her godmother.

"Wow" Kelly says, wiping tears from his eyes.

"She's gonna be one badass kid, guys" Adam says. Sam looks at Jay and smiles, "yeah, she really is"

After everyone meets baby Gracie, they leave the couple and Denise alone to have some family time.

"I love our little family" Sam says, looking at Jay and Denise.

"We love it too, right Dee?" Jay smiles. Denise smiles and says, "Definitely"

"Welcome to the family Grace Nadia Halstead"
