chapter two. made a wrong turn.

Sam sits down at her desk, putting an ice cold water bottle on her neck to try and keep cool as the heat is in the 90s close to 100.

"God, who can survive in this heat? I'm just glad we have a good air conditioner for the kids" Sam says.

"You're telling me, my air conditioner broke last night" Erin says. Sam passes the water bottle to Jay and says, "you can stay with us if you want, until the heat goes down"

Erin smiles and says, "thanks Sammy" while this whole time Al tries to mess with the air conditioner on the unit.

"Okay, who's up?" Hank says, leaving his office. Adam walks over to the whiteboard and says, "Alright, Nathan Ward, 24 years old. He's an engineering student. His fiancée, Sarah Murphy, also 24. She's a special needs teacher in northbrook. Now they have no priors, no convictions, no arrests. Between the two of them, they don't even have a moving violation."

"We put out a missing persons alert for Sarah. In the meantime, Kot signed off on an emergency order for her cell phone, so mouse is trying to ping it right now" Jay says.

"Yeah, what about the cars GPS?" Voight asks.

"That's gonna take a while, the guy at the tech lab was bitching about lack of manpower. I'm gonna stay on him" Sam states.

"But what if it wasn't a carjacking?" Kevin asks, "I mean, maybe they just wanted to score. The car was parked three blocks away from 290. That's the heroin highway."

"Yeah, but dealers don't assault their customers. Suburbanites are their bread and butter" Antonio states.

"Yeah, and we didn't find any drugs or paraphernalia in the car." Jay says.

"'Paraphernalia' there's an 'r' in there. A lot of people miss it"

"Okay, hooked on phonics. You wanna step outside?" Jay jokes.

"Let's do it" Dawson laughs as the two were about to pretend leave, everyone laughs but then stops when commander crowley walks onto the unit and says. "Sixty! Sixty! Sixty! That's how many shootings we've had this week. Twelve of them fatal. I'm not gonna worry about political correctness here or my own convictions. What we have is a white woman missing in the heart of the black ghetto. We're gonna assume the worst. She's been abducted. So do what you need to do to find her. Just do it carefully. Chicago already has enough of a PR nightmare."

Erin covers up the receiver on her desk phone and says, "It's Dr Choi. Sarah Murphy's parents are with Nathan down at med."

"Alright, Sam and Jay" Voight says, as the two get up from their desks, "You heard the commander, let's get to work"

Sam and Jay are on their way to med when they stop at a red light and Jay asks, "you know I'm in love with you right?"

"I know. I'm in love with you too" Sam smirks, "what's going on?"

"You just seem..I don't know, not here. Like you're here, but your mind is somewhere else"

Sam scoffs lightly and says, "I'm here, Jay, okay? I don't have anywhere else to be expect to be here for my family"

"I just hope you know I'd do anything for you, literally. So, you can tell me anything and I'll always have your back"

"I know"

"So, when we get married, you gonna let me drive?"

Sam shrugs and says, "maybe"

"Probably not" Jay and Sam say in unison, then laugh.

Jay and Sam are in the waiting room with Sarah's parents, interviewing them.

"When's the last time you saw your daughter?" Jay asks.

"Sarah and Nathan, they surprised us with dinner at the drake last night for our 25th anniversary" Ron Murphy says.

"Congratulations" Sam says. Ron half smiles and says, "thank you. Uh, we ate, and had some champagne and then they headed back for home."

"About what time was that?" Sam asks.

"It was about midnight. They both had to work in the morning." Mrs Murphy says.

"Okay, and you two stayed at the hotel?"

"It's where we had our honeymoon"

Suddenly Dr Choi walks over to the group and they all stand up, "CT scan showed Nathan suffered cranial bruising and some hemorrhaging. We have him in the ICU and packed his brain with ice until the swelling goes down. I know it sounds bad, but, luckily, Nathan didn't suffer any serious brain damage."

Jay sighs and says, "thanks doc"

"Sure" Choi says, before walking away.

"Has anyone spoken with Nathan's parents?"

"They're in Florida, catching the first flight they can." Ron says.

"Mr and Mrs Murphy, can either of you think of any reason that Sarah and Nathan would go into south Austin?" Sam asks.

"Why are you asking me questions when you should be out looking for my daughter?"

"Sir, we have 100 cops in the street looking for her right now. We are doing everything we can"

"Please, bring my little girl home" Mrs Murphy says.

As the team is gathered behind one of their cars, getting their long guns ready, Adam shows them a tablet with a picture on it and says, "alright, this is Michael Hudson. He's 22 years old, a lieutenant of the west side hustlers. This guys got priors for possession, assault, resisting arrest. He and his crew operate out of the foreclosed house other there. I called the board up company and got the lock code, so we're all set to go, boss"

"Let's go" Voight says.

Jay, Sam and Kevin go around back, and as they enter the house, they follow Voight upstairs to find Hudson taking an ice bath, eating chips and watching tv.

"Whoa" Sam says, then turns around. Kevin takes the chips away and Hank grabs the small tv by the cord and brings it over to the tub, slowly lowering it down, "where's Sarah Murphy?"

"Who?" Hudson asks, and Voight lowers the tv more. Jay takes out his phone and shows Hudson a picture of Nathan, "what about him? You see him?"

"Yeah, I've seen that punk. He was here to by some H, okay?"

Sam and Jay head back to Med to talk with Nathan, who's awake.

"How's Sarah?" Nathan asks. Sam sighs and says, "We don't know. She's missing."

"What?"

"Tell us what you remember." Jay says.

"We took a short cut on the way home to avoid traffic.."

"Alright, Nathan. Stop right there. It was no mistake you ended up in south Austin. You were there to buy heroin. We know that"

"No, I-I.."

"The longer you lie to us, the worse it is for your fiancée, who is out there scared and alone. We already know, so just tell us what happened." Sam says.

"I left her in the car. I told her to wait. She was scared. Kept asking why we were stopping there. I told her it was all good. I just had to pick up a package."

"Paid for with Monopoly money, which, by the way takes balls. It's also the dumbest thing I've ever heard." Jay says.

"I was jumped and, after that, everything's hazy"

"Okay, what about.." Sam was about to say when she gets interrupted by Ron Murphy who storms into the room and yells. "This is your fault!"

Jay backs Ron out of the room and telling him to calm down.

"I didn't mean for this to happen!" Nathan tried to shout.

Sam gets out of her vehicle to a location where Sarah Murphy might be, along with the rest of the team.

"What do you got?" Voight asks the officer.

"Local kids. They're always down here, drinking and screwing, and we're always having to chase off the homeless"

As the team follows the K9, they suddenly stop, when the dog stops and draw their guns to walk inside a shed and find a homeless man. Sam and Jay go into the next shed to find Sarah's missing shoe, her fitness bracelet and a clump of her hair.

Jay bag and tags her hair, then him and Sam walk back out to the techies so they can run it. "Crime lab, ASAP"

Sam puts her hands on her hips and says, "he ripped her hair right out like a dolls"

"Hey, you know the drill. Step by step until we find her."

"Step by step"

Hank and Antonio walk around the plastic tarp to meet up with the rest of the team and says, "okay, witness describes a long offender, male, black, 6'4" or taller, driving a black van"

"Supposedly he parked near the entrance of the rail tunnel, dragged Sarah inside, and assaulted her for approximately 30 minutes. Afterwards, he put her back in the van and drove off" Dawson states.

"Alright, start running sex offenders that fit that description." Voight says.

"He could've assaulted her in the van with no witnesses, so why pull her into the rail yard?" Erin questions.

"I don't know. Maybe he didn't plan on taking her. I mean, he drags her down to this tunnel, has his way. Figures he can keep the party going" kevin says.

"Well, at least there's an upside. Probably still alive." Al says.

After Hank and Al find video footage of the night Sarah was taken. The team heads back to the unit, surrounding the whiteboard, as Adam tapes a picture up of the suspect.

"I ran the video footage through facial recognition. We got a hit. Kenneth Waddell, aka '6-6'. Yes because he's 6'6" tall." Adam says.

"Waddell's got priors for dealing narcotics when he was a teenager. And in his 20s, it seems he switched to sexual assault. In 2011, he raped an underaged handicapped girl. Went to stateville, did five years, for paroled two months ago and since then, he's been ostracized in the neighborhood. Gang unit says no local crews want anything to do with this guy." Dawson says.

"Alright thank you" Sam says, getting off the phone and walking back over to the group, "that was Waddell's parole officer. Lists his LKA as his aunt's house on 17th place, but apparently he's disappeared, and nobody's seen him in weeks"

"And Jay and I ran the partial plate that we got off the footage. We got a hit on the black van" Mouse says, as Jay goes to tape the picture onto the board, "and the temporary tags are registered to Kenneth Waddell."

"Housing authority camera recorded the van driving into Beverly gardens at 6 a.m. this morning. Never came out" Jay says.

"Beverly gardens. That's a g park lord stronghold. They control every gate, in and out" Dawson states.

"Yeah, I ran Waddell's file and neither him or his family have an address listed there, so if he is still in there, we have no clue where he's keeping her."

"Well, he could have her in one of the van ants. Obvious stash spot" Olinsky says.

"Yeah, and this ain't gonna be easy. I mean, g lords, they don't care if you're a fireman, an EMT, a cop. You got to get permission from whoever is calling the shots just to get in there and they're gonna have cars guarding the gates, spotters in the roof..." Kevin says.

"So we need to figure out a weak point to get inside." Dawson says.

"No, there's no time to execute a raid. We go in through the front door" Hank says, walking to his office.

After going to Beverly gardens and finding Sarah and killing Waddell. Erin and Sam bring Sarah to Chicago med, as the rest of the team heads back to the district.

Sam smiles as she watches her almost 1 year old, splash around in the bathtub. Sam rubs her daughters cheek with her thumb and says, "silly girl"

Jay walks in and kneels down next to his fiancée and says, "how are my two favorite girls?" Then kisses Sam's cheek.

"We're good. Hot, but good" Sam smiles, "you dropped Dee off at her friends?"

"Yes, just got back and Wyatt is in his room playing video games"

Sam sighs and says, "that's all he's been doing since Justin's funeral. I'm gonna go check on him. Can you finish gracies bath?"

"Of course. Anything for my princess" Jay says, as Gracie giggles, "and she knows it too"

Sam makes her way to her sons room and knocks. When there was no answer, she opens it to find her 15 year old, sitting on his bean bag chair playing Call of duty.

"Wyatt"

"What?"

"Are you okay? Cause you can tell me if you're not" Sam says, kneeling next to the brunette boy.

"I'm fine" Wyatt says, wiping away tears from his eyes with his sleeve before his mom notices.

"Sweetheart, have you been crying?"

"No"

"I know you're upset your father passed away. You can tell me. I'm upset too."

Wyatt pauses the games and faces his mom and says, "It's not fair!"

"I know"

"I just want my dad back!" Wyatt says, as Sam pulls him into a hug. "I know, baby. I want him back too. But me and you are going to get through this..together, okay?"

"Okay"

"You remind me a lot of your father, you know?"

Wyatt sniffles and says, "really?" pulling away from the hug. Sam nods her head and says, "yup and you look just like him too"
