Chapter 9: The Truth Comes Out
Bea stood in Toretto's garage as she was applying stickers to Brian's car, she smiled as the crew used her design for the car.
Bea turned to Mia, who avoided her gaze, causing the young girl to frown, thinking she had done something wrong.
Dom, who was also working on the car, noticed how Mia was intentionally ignoring Bea, he raised his eyebrows at her, and she looked up as they made eye contact.
Dom motions toward Bea with a confused look, Mia shook her head, not wanting to talk about it, getting back to work.
From the corner of her eye, Bea saw the exchange, confused and upset about what she did wrong.
Sighing as she went back to add the sticker to the car.
-------
Bea was back at the apartment and sat on her bed, going through her phone.
Brian stood at her doorway, looking at her with mixed emotions.
"You can come in, you know," Bea told him. "I won't bite."
Brian walked further into the room, sitting at the end of her bed.
It was silent between the two as Bea was messing around on her phone.
Brian looked at her but she didn't say a word.
Conflicted, he spoke. "So, how are you?"
Bea looked up from her phone. "I'm upset."
Brian looks at her, confused. "Why?"
"Because Mia ignored me today," Bea told him. "And now I'm wondering what I did wrong, so I can apologize to her."
"I think I might know why she ignored you," Brian said. Bea looked up at him, confused. "She feels guilty."
Bea tilted her head. "And why would she feel guilty?"
"Because she told me your little secret," Brian said as Bea's eyes widened. "Don't be upset with Mia, she had every right to tell me about your back problem."
Bea glared. "I knew I shouldn't have trusted."
"Bea, that is not the point," Brian said. "Why keep this a secret? Why couldn't you have told me?"
"It's none of your business," Bea told him.
"It is my business!" Brian yelled, causing Bea to flinch. "I'm taking care of you, I have to know these things, Bea, for your safety and health."
Bea looked down. "You're not my father or my mother. You wouldn't understand, no one will ever understand me except momma." Bea's eyes began to weld up with tears. "And I wish she was here, I miss her so much. She doesn't even answer the phone when I call her." Bea hugs her knees close to her chest. "I'm all alone."
"Bea you are not alone," Brian told her. "I'm here, and I am not going to leave your side."
"That's what momma said," Bea told him. "And then she left me here, I've been abandoned."
Brian pats her head. "I know kid, trust me, I know what it felt like to be abandoned by my sister."
Bea looked at him. "She left you too?"
Brian nodded his head. "Yeah, she did. And you know what, you'll be just fine. I know what you're feeling right now, and it does get better."
"How?" Bea asked. "Because all I feel is pain and sadness."
"And that's all you will continue to feel if you don't let go," Brian told her. "I remember it took me a long time to let go of my sister when I knew she was never coming back. I had people who would help me let go and just start feeling like myself." Brian brings her in for a hug. "It gets better, trust me, kid."
"Bea," Bea told him. "It's Bea, not kid, get it right mister."
Brian chuckles as Bea hugs back. "You know, we're going to have to talk about that scar sooner or later."
"I vote for later," Bea told him. "I'm not ready to talk about it, it's a tragic story to tell."
"I'll be here," Brian said. "I'll be waiting whenever you're ready to talk about everything."
"Thanks, uncle Brian," Bea said.
-----
A few days passed as today was Race War.
Bea was excited as she finally gets to see some action today.
She had sat underneath a big tent, chilling beside Letty who had smiled down at her.
Mia was there too, but Bea chose to ignore the older girl, not ready to speak to her as she broke a promise.
Mia could tell that Bea knew, considering she saw the little glares Bea had sent her way for the past few days.
Of course, Mia felt terrible for what she did, but she did what she thought was right, even though that cost her a little friend.
Bea wanted to make Mia suffer with the silence she had given her, of course, she was going to speak to Mia, but she wanted her to feel guilty for what she did.
Right now, it was Letty's turn to race, and Bea was excited to watch the older girl, as she stood on the sidelines.
Letty turned her head
smiling fondly at the little girl, as Bea gave her two thumbs up for good luck.
Once the race began, Bea cheered as she saw Letty reach the finish line.
Brian had walked over with Jesse, as Leon had pulled up with his car.
Brian stood beside Bea who watch curiously, knowing something was wrong.
"Who are you racing?" Brian asked. The car next to Jesse's rolled down his window, Bea looked up at her uncle as she saw worried he was. Brian bends down to the passenger window. "Jesse, don't do it. I bet you he's got more than $100,000 under the hood of that car."
"Uh-huh," Jesse said.
Both cars revved their engines as they started racing, Bea watched with a tilt of her head as Jesse was losing as the other car crossed the finish line.
Bea frowned as she saw Jesse still driving, she left Brian's side and went over to the tent where everyone else was, she stood by Letty's side.
She watched as Leon ran up to Dom.
"Yo! Heads up, bro," Leon told him. "We got problems."
"What?" Dom asked.
Leon pointed towards the tracks, everyone saw Jesse driving away.
"Jesse," Leon said.
"Where's Jesse going?" Dom asked.
"He just raced Tran for slip," Leon told him.
Dom ran a hand over his face. "Oh, shit."
Johnny Tran pulled up in front of them.
"Where's he going?" Johnny asked.
"Went to the car wash," Dom told him.
"Whatever," Johnny said as he stepped closer to Dom. "Go fetch my car."
"Go fetch your car?" Dom repeated. "We're not on your block anymore. You better watch who you talk to like that."
Dom turned his back to Johnny and started to walk away.
"Toretto!" Johnny yelled as Dom ignored him. "Toretto!"
Dom turned back around, facing him.
"SWAT came into my house, disrespected my whole family because somebody narked me out," Johnny told him. "And you know what? It was you!"
Bea's eyes at what happened next as Dom punched Johnny in the face, a few security guards ran over to them, as Bea got shoved out of the way, stumbling as she fell.
Letty picked her up as one of Johnny's friends walked over to help him, Letty swung her fist at him and Bea's eyes widen before she cheered for the older girl.
Bea watched as Vince and Leon pulled the security guards off Dom who continued to punch Johnny.
They pulled Dom off Johnny.
"Dom, chill out, man," Vince said.
"I never narked on nobody!" Dom yelled. "I never narked on nobody!"
"Let's go," Leon said.
Letty who still held Bea in her arms walked away with the rest of the group. Bea laid her head on Letty's shoulder.
------
It was nighttime and Bea had stood inside the RV, looking out the window as she watched Mia arguing with Dom in front of the crew.
Brian had walked into the RV, also watching the sibling argue.
Bea glances up at Brian. "Don't hurt them." Brian looked down at Bea confused. She looks out the window. "What you do next will hurt them badly. And they're good people with good hearts, you can't hurt them, uncle Brian. You would be destroying a family."
Brian frowned, knowing Bea was right, but also knowing that he had no choice as his job would be on the line.
Bea watched as the crew got in their cars, sighing as she tilts her head, she sighed as she stared at her foot.
Brian turned and walked out of the RV, Bea turned and followed him.
Mia was walking by as Brian and Bea caught up to her.
"Mia, what's going on?" Brian asked.
"What?" Mia asked as she continues to walk.
"You know what I'm talking about," Brian told her.
"No, I don't, Brian," Mia said.
"Oh, so what?" Bea asked. "You always have tears in your eyes when your brother drives away?"
Mia looked at the two confused. "What is the matter with you?"
"Come on," Brian said. "What's your brother racing off in the middle of the night for?" Bea sighed as tried to keep up with the two as they walked fast. "I'm talking about the trucks. You know about the trucks?"
"No, Brian!" Mia yelled. "What trucks? Jesus Christ."
Bea tired of the two, slid in front of Mia, arms crossed over her chest.
Mia stopped walking as Brian turned her to face him.
"What?" Mia asked.
"Listen to me," Brian told her. Bea sighed, knowing what was to come. " Mia, I'm a cop."
"What are you talking about, Brian?" Mia asked as she looked at Bea who refuse to meet her gaze. "What is this?"
"Ever since the first time I met you, I've been undercover," Brian told her. "I'm a cop."
Mia looked back at Bea for confirmation, and Bea nods her head sadly.
Mia looked back at Brian. "Oh, you bastard." Mia had tears in her eyes. "You bastard."
Mia turned away, walking away, but Bea stopped her, grabbing her hand,
Bea looked up at her, tears in her eyes.
"Mia," Brian said, walking towards her.
"Leave me alone, Brian!" Mia told him, Bea let go of Mia's hand.
"Listen to him!" Bea yelled.
Both Mia and Brian looked back at Bea, and Bea nodded toward Brian.
"Everything I ever said I felt about you is real," Brian told her. "I swear to god, you have to believe me, Mia. But right now, this isn't even about you and me. Your brother's out there, he's about to pull a job, and we're running out of time. Those truckers, they're not laying down anymore, you know. Maybe they'll make it through tonight, but every single law enforcement agency in California coming down on them. If you don't want anything to happen to your brother, to Letty, to Leon, to Vince, you have to just get in that car with me right now."
"You have to help him," Bea told her as Mia looked at her. "Please, you are the only person that can help him right now." Bea took Mia's hand in hers. "Please, Mia, please help him."
"Fine," Mia said. "I'm only helping you for my brother, the crew, and you, Bea."
Bea smiled weakly as they followed Brian to his car.
------
Mia was reading the map as she sat in the passenger side of Brian's car, while Bea sat in the back, looking out the window.
Mia looked at Brian. "Civics are stashed somewhere outside of Thermal."
"And they wouldn't double back," Brian said. "And Highway 10 is just way too well patrolled." Brian looked back at Mia. "So, what does that leave us with, then?"
"That leaves us with all this," Mia told him.
Brian grabbed his phone. "Yeah, this is Officer Brian O'Conner. Serial Number 34762." Mia looked back at Bea as she then looked at Brian, hurt evident in her eyes. "I need a cellphone trace." Brian looked at Mia. "Mia, what's the cellphone number?" Mia looked straight ahead, tears in her eyes. "Come on, Mia. She needs Dom's cellphone number now."
Mia took the phone from Brian. "323-555-6439."
Brian took the phone back. "Thank you. Yeah, you get that?"
Brian hung up the phone.
Mia turned to Bea. "Bea." Bea looked at Mia. "I wanted to say that I'm sorry for telling Brian your secret. And I hope that you will forgive me."
Bea nods her head. "I'm sorry too." Mia looked at her confused as Bea eyed Brian. "We destroy your family, and it's our fault."
Mia shook her head. "You didn't do anything." Mia glance at Brian. "It was your idiot uncle and my idiot brother and his crew."
Brian sighed as he glanced at the two.
His phone rang. "Yeah." Brian hung up, looking at Mia. "Let me see this." He took the map. "Alright, I think we're about 40 miles away."
Bea leaned forward. "What are you gonna do?"
"What are you gonna do?" Mia repeated.
Brian said nothing as he continues to drive.
Both Bea and Mia exchange looks.
------
The sun was coming up as they were still driving.
Bea sighed as she looked forward, she was hungry, tired, and in need of a shower.
Though, something piqued Bea's interest as she saw a car parked on the side of the road as two people were walking up to it.
Her heart broke seeing Letty who had blood on her face.
Brian sped past them as he was reaching the truck, Bea's eyes widen as saw Vince hanging on for dear life.
"What the hell?" Bea said.
This wasn't the most disturbing thing she saw, as she had seen worse, but this wasn't a sight she wanted to see.
Vince was covered in blood and his arm was wrapped in a wire.
Once they got closer, Brian pushed the roof of the car, and it flew off.
"Here, take the wheel!" Brian yelled at Mia
"What do you mean take the wheel?" Mia yelled.
Bea stared at them, intrigued, about what was gonna happen next.
"Take the wheel!" Brian told her. "Put your foot on the gas!" Brian looked back at Vince. "I'm gonna get him. Put your foot on the gas."
"Okay!" Mia yelled. "Okay!"
Bea leaned back in her seat as she watched her uncle climb out of the car as Mia took his seat.
"Come on, keep it steady!" Brian told her.
"I got it!" Mia yelled.
"Alright, hold on, Vince!" Brian told him." Hey, he's having a hard time holding on! Get me a little closer!"
"Alright!" Mia yelled.
"Closer!" Brian told her.
"I'm moving in!" Mia yelled.
"Hold it right there!" Brian told her.
Bea's eyes widen as she saw Brian jump from the car to the truck.
"Vince!" Brian yelled. "You got to hang in here with me right now! We're gonna get you off this thing! Give me your arm! Vince, look at me! Don't let go!" Brian untangles the wire around Vince.
Brian pushes Vince into the car, and Bea watched her uncle jump on top of the car.
Bea sighed in relief as her uncle was okay.
Mia lost control of the car, and Bea braced herself as the car swerved off the road and then stopped.
Bea watched as Mia and Brian helped Vince out of the car, and lay him down on the ground.
Bea also got out of the car, and walking towards the adults, she turned her head as she saw a black car pull up.
Dom ran to them.
"Come on, Vince!" Brian yelled as he wrapped a belt around Vince's arm, hoping to stop the blood. "Hang in there! Come on!" Bea moved a few feet away, not wanting to get caught up in the drama that was about to unfold. Dom kneeled beside them. "If we don't get him in an ambulance in ten minutes, he's dead." Brian looked at Mia."Hold it, hold the pressure, hold his arm up!" Brian out his phone. "Yeah, this is Officer Brian O'Conner, I'm off-duty LAPD. I need a Life Flight to roll out right away." Dom stared at him in betrayal. Bea could see the anger on Dom's face, he looked at her, but she looked away quickly, not wanting to meet his gaze. "My 20 is Highway 86, mile marker 147. I got one trauma victim, about 24 years of age. Six-foot, maybe 200 pounds." Dom looked at Mia, who shook her head. "He's got a deep laceration on his right arm with arterial bleeding. And he's got a shotgun wound close range to his left flank. Yeah, yeah, and he's going into shock!"
Bea looked down at Vince as she felt bad for him.
A helicopter came as they had Vince on a stretcher, bringing him inside the helicopter.
Bea watched as Brian closed the door to the helicopter, turning her head to look at Mia who stared at her, sadness in her eyes as Dom turned his back to her walking away.
Mia looked back and forth between Brian, Bea, and Dom.
Dom shouted for her to come.
Bea nods her head toward Mia, telling her to go.
Mia turned away, walking towards Dom.
Bea let out a sigh, as a tear went down her face, wiping it as she turned to her uncle.
