JADEN
We are walking around looking for a place to eat lunch when Josh's phone rings. He pulls it out of his pocket, looks at the caller ID, and walks off to answer. We continue down the sidewalk, leaving him by the storefront we passed.
"Guys! Wait up!" Josh yells, running back up to us. He's panting and looks worried.
"We aren't waiting up just because you were being a slow walker," Sam says.
"No, it's Elly!" Josh exclaims urgently.
"What about her?" Maverick asks.
"They don't know where she is. That was Griffin who called me. He said he talked to Noen, but he didn't know where she was and that she wasn't picking up the phone or answering any texts." Josh starts panting again, so I awkwardly pat his back until he catches his breath.
"We could all call her and see if she'll pick up our call," Payton suggests. "Maybe she just didn't want to talk to any of them?"
Murmurs and mumbles spread across the group as we all pull our phones out. Everyone is either calling or texting her, but after a few minutes, we realize she isn't responding. Not to me, not to Josh, not to anyone else.
"I'll let Griffin know that we can go look for her," Josh says. I can see him shoot Griffin a text before pocketing his phone. "He said Noen left her on the sidewalk route back to the hotel."
"That's just over there!" Chaser points a few blocks down the street.
"I guess we all start looking, then?" Madison asks. "Sidewalks, stores, restaurants. She could be anywhere." We all look around before breaking off, some in groups and some by themselves. I go by myself, starting towards the sidewalk Chaser pointed out not too far away.
When I get there, I look around, realizing it could've been any sidewalk from the venue back to the hotel. I sigh and start looking in store windows as I begin making my way towards the venue.
"Oh, sorry," I say when I run into a woman. She nods and keeps walking, but when I look down, I see a stuffed bear poking out of a gift bag. I pick the item up and look around. Pulling the card out from inside the bag, I read the scribbles on it.
It's addressed to Elly.
I look around the sidewalk and see a few more gifts scattered along the route back to the venue. I pull out my phone, calling Griffin quickly as I run down the sidewalk and pick up the lost gifts, which are all addressed to Elly.
"Did you find her?" he asks quickly.
"No-" I begin, but he cuts me off.
"Then why did you call me?" he shouts.
"Her gifts from the event. I came over to the sidewalk along the route from the venue to the hotel." I stop to pick up another lost item of Elly's. "They're scattered along the sidewalk. I'm following them now, and they seem to be leading back to the venue."
"Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh." I hear Griffin breathing heavily.
"It's okay, Griffin. She'll be alright," I try to reassure as I weave through crowds of people at a full-on sprint. "Maybe her phone is just dead."
"She would've found a way to call me!" Griffin yells. "She's 16, and she's never been to the city before, but she is smart enough to call me if she's lost, Jaden!"
"Sorry," I reply as I stoop over to grab another card addressed to Elly.
"What if she's hurt?" I hear Griffin repeating to himself over and over and over. He calls out her name to no avail. "Stay on the line with me, alright? Anthony is already calling the police to report her missing."
"Yeah, yeah. I'll stay on the line with you." I finally reach the parking lot of the venue. I run across the lot that's about half-full of cars and get on the sidewalk. Looking around, I see a large pile of Elly's gifts with a scattered trail leading off of them. "Griffin! I found more of them!"
"Where?" he blurts.
"The venue. On the sidewalk," I pant. I only take a second before dropping the gifts with the other pile and start running along the trail left behind. It leads to an alleyway along a less-busy street.
"Where do they lead?" Griffin is shouting at me. I realize he's said it a few times, but I'm too busy staring down at the scene in the alleyway. "Jaden! Where do they lead?"
"I found her," I whisper before dropping the phone and running into the alley.
