The drive through Sapulpa was confusing, to say the least. Even asking someone for directions was still a nightmare to get through. But eventually finding their way to a small dinner. "Joe White Tree?" Sam asked the older Native American man who was playing cards, he nodded. "Sorry to interrupt, but we'd like to ask you a few questions, if you don't mind?" Carmen asked.
"We're students from the university," Dean added. "No, you're not. You're lying." Dean glanced back at both his siblings before looking back at Joe, "Um...Well, truth is-"
"You know who starts sentences with "truth is"?" Joe stated cutting him off, "Liars,"
Carmen looked over at her brother giving him a 'stop talking' type look. Before looking back at the man, "I'm Carmen, and these two idiots are my brothers. Have you heard of Oasis Plains? It's a housing development near Atoka Valley."
Joe looked at her, smiling lightly before looking over towards her brothers. "I like her. She doesn't lie. I know where it is."
"What can you tell us about the history there?" Sam asked.
"Why do you wanna know?" He asked curiously. "Something–something bad is happening in Oasis Plains. We think it might have something to do with some old bones we found down there, Native American bones," She explained.
"I'll tell you what my grandfather told me, what his grandfather told him." He started, placing his cards down the back printing facing them. "200 hundred years ago, a band of my ancestors lived in that valley. One day, the American cavalry came to relocate them. They were resistant, the cavalry impatient. As my grandfather put it, on the night the moon and the sun share the sky as equals, the cavalry first raided our village. They murdered, raped. The next day, the cavalry came again, and the next, and the next. And on the sixth night, the cavalry came one last time. And by the time the sun rose, every man, woman, and child still in the village was dead." Dean shifted his weight to his leg, subconsciously leaning closer to Carmen as Joe continued, "They say on the sixth night, as the chief of the village lay dying, he whispered to the heavens that no white man would ever tarnish this land again. Nature would rise up and protect the valley. And it would bring as many days of misery and death to the white man as the cavalry had brought upon his people."
"Insects. Sounds like nature to me." Dean remarked, "Ignore him," She stated. "Six days," He continued, "And on the night of the sixth day, none would survive." After Joe finished the story they each thanked him, before walking back towards the Impala. "When did the gas company man die?" Sam asked suddenly.
"Uh, let's see, we got here..." Dean trailed off looking up trying to remember.
"Tuesday," Carm answered.
"Tuesday, so – Friday the twentieth."
"March twentieth?" Sam asked as they both nodded. "That's the spring equinox."
"The night the sun and the moon share the sky as equals." Dean recalled from memory. "So, every year about this time, everyone in Oasis Plains is in danger. Larry built this neighborhood on cursed land," She asked. "And on the sixth night-that's tonight," Dean declared.
The three got into the car, "I'm adding this to the list of things to look into before buying a house or apartment." She remarked sarcastically.
"If we don't do something, Larry's family will be dead by sunrise. So, how do we break the curse?" Sam questioned. "You don't break a curse in a few hours. You just gotta get the hell out of its way." Carmen said the part neither wanted to say, out loud. "We've gotta get those people out now." Dean said.
💾
It was getting darker as they drove towards the Pike's house. Dean was talking on the phone with Larry, while driving like a bat out of hell, "Yes, Mr Pike, there's a mainline gas leak in your neighborhood." Dean lied before pausing. "Well, it's fairly extensive. I don't want to alarm you, but we need your family out of the vicinity for at least twelve hours or so, just to safe" "Travis Weaver. I worked for Oklahoma Gas and Power." He paused, frowning. "Uh.." He trailed off hanging up the phone.
"I'll take that as they aren't leaving."
"Give me the phone," Sam said before grabbing the phone from Dean and dialing a number. "Who are you calling? Who's he calling?" She asked, looking between the two. "Your boyfriend." He teased getting him a slap on his shoulder. "We need to do something about her," He said to Dean.
"Matt, it's Sam." He answered before pausing. "Matt, just listen. You have to get your family out of that house right now, oaky?" He paused again. "Because something's coming. Yeah, a lot more. You've gotta make him listen, okay?"
Dean glanced back to Carmen, giving a look that told her 'his dad isn't going to listen to that'. "Give me the phone," She said more as a warning, before taking the phone. "Matt, you tell them that the only thing it'll do is start a fight."
"But Carmen, he's-"
"Shut up. Tell him you have sharp pain in your right side, and you've gotta go to the hospital, okay?" She quickly cut him off, seeing Dean nod in agreement. "Yeah. Yeah, okay," Matt agreed, she let out a small sigh before hanging up the phone, handing it back to Sam. Dean looked over at him before going back to the road. "Make him listen? What are you thinkin'?"
💾
Finally arriving outside the Pike's house, all the lights were still on showing that the house wasn't empty at all. "Damn," She muttered. "Damn it, they're still there," Dean said turning the Impala's engine off, "Come on," Quickly getting out and speed walking up to the house. When suddenly Larry swung the front door open stepping outside with Matt behind him. "Get off my property before I call the cops!" He warned, pointing his finger at each of them.
Dean calmly placed himself in front of Sam and Carmen, thinking the worst but hoping for the best. "Mr. Pike listen," Sam started calmly. "Dad, they're just tryin' to help," Matt spoke up, which only made his dad turn towards him, "Get in the house!" The teen boy looked towards Carmen with an apologetic look, I'm sorry. I told him the truth,"
"We had a plan, Matt. What happened to the plan?" Dean asked.
"Look, it's midnight, they're coming any minute now. You need to get your family and go, before it's too late." Sam told the older man trying to get the family out. "Yeah, you mean before the biblical swarm?" He replied in a mocking sarcastic tone.
"Mr. Pike, what do you think really happened to that realtor? And the gas guy? You really don't think something weird's goin' on?" She asked, trying to add some type of reasoning.
"Look, I don't know who you are, but you're crazy. You stay away from my boy and my family, or we're gonna have a problem." He threatened. Which was a very wrong, very bad idea. Anyone who threatened Carmen never made the mistake again. Dean pushed her farther behind him, "Well, I hate to be a downer, but we've got a problem right now." He said clenching his jaw.
"Dad, they're right, okay? We're in danger," Matt said trying to get his father to listen to him.
"Matt, get inside!"
"No!"
"Now!"
"Why won't you listen to me?!" Matt yelled back with a hurt tone. "Because this is crazy! It doesn't make any sense!" His father shouted back finally saying what he meant.
"Look," Sam shouted, raising his voice to get all the attention onto him. "This land is cursed! People have died here. Now, are you gonna really take that risk with your family?"
Through all the back-and-forth arguing Carmen couldn't get the loud buzzing in her ears. Figuring it might be lights, but then her brain felt like it punched itself after remembering what exactly they were dealing with. "Shh, wait!" She shushed making everyone go silent. "You hear it?
The buzzing noise was growing louder, and louder with each passing second. Like a swarm of every flying insect known to mankind was on its way. Growing closer, and closer. "What the hell?" Larry broke the silence, signaly that everyone heard what she was hearing. The white bright bug light on the porch started overheating. Zapping a thousand bugs trying to do it's job but falling. "Alright, it's time to go. Larry, get your wife." Dean stated and Larry turned around to do such. But Matt interrupted him, "Guys." He said looking up at the sky. Causing everyone else to look up seeing the sky filled with bugs flying towards the house. "Oh my god," Larry muttered. "We'll never make it." Sam stated. "Everybody in the house. Everybody in the house, go!" Dean ordered, pushing Carmen towards Sam, who pushed her in front of him holding onto her shoulder. The oldest locked the door after everyone ran into the house.
"Is there anybody else in the neighborhood?" Carmen asked, her brother not taking an arm off her. "No, it's just us." He replied.
"Honey, what's happening? What's that noise?" Joanie asked, wandering into the room looking clearly confused. "Call 9-1-1." Her husband said, ignoring her question but she didn't move an inch. "Joanie!" She blinked a couple of times, "Okay." She muttered running over to the landline.
"I need towels," Dean told Larry and him and Sam went to get the towels, "Uh, in the closet." Larry stuttered.
Carmen turned to Matt, "We've gotta lock this whole place up, come on - door, windows, fireplace, everything." She said as he nodded following her up the stairs. Going through each and every room locking the windows that weren't already, and checking the ones that were. Carmen was checking the small bathroom window when she saw a can of spray on cologne. She took it and placed it into her jacket pocket before turning the light off and shutting the door behind her. "What are you going to do with that? Spray them to death?" He tilted his head slightly, locking the door. "More of a fiery spray of death. I have a lighter in my pocket." She said trying to lighten the mood, but saw Matt's face was still full of worry. "Look, everything will be okay."
"You've dealt with killer bugs before?"
"No, but I have killed a werewolf and exercised a demon within seventy-two hours." She said, smirking. Watching as his eyes widened after a second, as if his brain finally realized what she fully said. "Wait what?"
"Come on, we're finished up here." She said ignoring his question. Grabbing his hand, making him follow behind her as they went back down the stars.
"You won't get on. They're blanketing the house," Dean stated pointing towards the windows that were now covered in black tiny dots. The buzzing had now taken over the entire house, coming from all around, from the windows and doors. They had covered the entire house. Larry turned to the three Winchester, "So what do we do now?"
"We try to outlast it," Sam said as Dean went into the kitchen. "Hopefully, the curse will end at sunrise."
"Hopefully?"
Dean came rushing back with a large yellow can, "Bug spray?" Joanie asked. "Trust me," Was all that he replied with.
A loud creaking sound was now being heard from somewhere. No one could truly figure out where exactly it was coming from. The sound was like it was coming from every part of the house. "What is that?" Matt asked. "That's a great question," Carmen muttered, looking up at the ceiling before her eyes landed onto the top of the fireplace. She walked towards it, realizing that the fireplace was completely open. "Yup, this is gunna really suck." She said before dropping onto one of her knees and starting to fish the lighter out of her boot.
"All right, I think everybody needs to get upstairs," Dean stated. And just like that hundreds upon thousands of bugs had come swarming into the living room out from the fireplace. Immediately starting to attack each of them, everyone was screaming and swatting them away trying to protect themselves. Dean grabbed onto the back of Carmen's collar pulling her back onto her feet and behind him. She quickly handed him the lighter, catching onto what he was doing. The flame burnt some of the bugs in front of them, but didn't stop them. "All right, everybody upstairs! Now! Go, go, go!" Dean shouted, shoving his sister between him and Sam. Being the last person up the stairs as he tried to burn off as many bugs as he could, but there too many for him to spray at once.
The small group were now cornered up into the attic. Once Dean climbed up with them, Carmen helped pull him in while Sam shut the door immediately after him. Each took a quick moment to catch each of their breaths when sawdust started to lightly fall from the roof. The buzzing sound was now deafening. "Oh, God, what's that?" Joanie asked clearly in distress.
Both brothers went over to examine the dust, "Something's eating through the wood." Dean stated.
"Termites," Both Carmen and Matt said, both knowing that was an extremely bad sign.
"Alright, everybody get back. Get back, get back, get back!" Dean kept repeating. Each of them did such, Larry and Joanie hurdling over their son. While Sam sandwiches Carmen between him and the wall.
But within seconds, the termites had chewed a hole through the ceiling. Letting each and every bug to swarm into the room. The three siblings frantically tried to cover the hole with some random tarp they had found. It only worked for a minute before more holes were chewed through. Dean tried to spray them off but there were just too many of them. So, they did the last thing they were able to do, wait them out and hope they go away. All of them huddled in the corner and those few seconds felt like years passing. Swatting the few bugs away from their faces as they were getting too close for comfort. Miraculously though, they started to leave each of them leaving back through the tiny holes they had come through. The three slowly raised up each walking up to different holes seeing the bugs were back in the sky. The large gray static cloud was moving on.
💾
A few hours had passed, the three had gone through the neighborhood doing a small sweep making sure the swarm was in fact now gone. And they were, leaving behind a few signs of them even being here. The Impala pulled back up to Pike's house, the three started out of it after Dean turned the car off. "What, no goodbye?" Dean joked as they walked up towards Larry, who was placing boxes into a moving van.
"Good timing," He said, shaking Dean's hand, "Another hour and we'd have been gone." Then Carmen's hand. "For good?" Sam asked as they shook hands. "Yeah," Larry replied with a small sigh, "The development's been put on hold while the government investigates those bones you found. But I'm gonna make damn sure no one lives here again."
"You don't seem upset about it," Carmen pointed out.
"Well, this has been the biggest financial disaster of my career, but..." He trailed off looking over at Matt, who was carrying a box to the garbage cans, "Somehow, I really don't care." Sam and Carmen walked over to Matt, the boxes he was placing in the cans was his insect collection. "What's this?" Sam asked with a small smile. "I don't know. They kind of weird me out now," He admitted with a small laugh. "Yeah, I should hope so," Sam said. He looked over at his sister, smiling before leaving the two alone.
"So," Matt said, looking over at her smiling. "Looks like you and your Dad are gonna be okay." He smiled nodding his head, "Yeah." He agreed, glancing over to his dad before looking back at her.
"Oh! I almost forgot," She said, digging into her jacket pocket, handing him the can she had taken earlier. "I figured you would'd might want this back." He smiled lightly while taking the can.
"So, I guess this is goodbye?" He said it as more of a statement then a question. She nodded, which caused his expression to change to a sad one. "Thank you, really," He said, forcing a smile. "It's really not a problem." She replied, taking a small step closer. Watching as his eyes flickered between her eyes and her lips. She smirked, shaking her head lightly before taking a step closer and pushed her lips against his. Feeling his body stiff from surprise before imminently relaxing into the kiss. She pulled away, with a small smirk, "I'll see you around Matt."
"Yeah, see you around Carmen."
She turned on her heel looking down as a large smile crept onto her face. Walking back over to her brothers, who were backed by the Impala, "What?" The two looked at each other, "Look Dean, our baby sister is growing up." Sam teased, she rolled her eyes.
"I'll let that one slide," Dean remarked, making the two laugh. "Shut up, and let's hit the road," She said, climbing into the Impala. "Lets," They each got back into the Impala and off back onto the road they went. "Look at you," Dean gushed, looking back at her through the rearview mirror. "Our Carmey had her first kiss."
She tilted her head slightly, "Who said that was my first kiss?"
Dean immediately slammed onto the brakes, jerking each of their heads forward. Both of them looked at each other with wide eyes, before looking back at her, "WHAT?!" She couldn't hold her laugh in as the two looked back at one another, "What are we going to do with her?" Sam muttered, shaking his head.
