the winning choose was πππ’πππ π’π‘π: continue after his sister and find out what she wants to show him.
the moon cast a pale silvery light over the quiet camp clearing. stonechatpaw's gaze was drawn towards the medicine den's entrance. he knew gravelpaw was probably asleep, curled up after a long day of helping her mentor, nightmask.
for a moment, stonechatpaw felt a tug at his stomach. gravelpaw would have loved to join them on this lateβnight adventure. but he knew better than to drag her into whatever mischief his sister had planned for them both. gravelpaw had responsibilities, and nightmask would be furious if his apprentice returned late, or worse, injured.
a sharp, impatient mewl from robinpaw, who stood upΒ ahead, jolted him from his thoughts. she was already a few foxβlengths ahead, tail twitching with annoyance as she glanced back at him. β hurry up! β she urged, her voice low but insistent.
stonechatpaw shook his head to clear it and hurried to catch up, leaving the medicine den behind. they exited the camp together, slipping through the entrance. the territory welcomed them with open arms, the sounds of the night immediately surrounding them.
above, the fluttering of bats echoed in the stillness of the night, their highβpitched screeches piercing the cool air. the soft rustle of leaves accompanied them, a gentle breeze brushing through the trees and tickling their pelts. the territory at night felt like a different world, both familiar and strange, its shadows deep and mysterious under the slight glow of the moon.
stonechatpaw's curiosity gnawed at him, but he held his tongue for a while, letting the sounds of the forest fill the silence between them. after a few moments, though, he couldn't resist any longer. β robinpaw, β he whispered, his voice barely louder than the rustling of the leaves from the distant trees and shrubs. β what exactly are you showing me? β
she didn't answer immediately. and instead, flicked her tail back at him, a clear signal to stay quiet. then, with a sudden burst of energy, she bounded through a large cluster of shrubs and disappeared into the dense undergrowth.
stonechatpaw hesitated, his ears pricked as he listened to the sounds around him. this part of fhe territory felt thicker here, more enclosed. the open fields were now tickled along the edges with lines of shrubs, decorated with tall trees too. he could hear robinpaw's pawsteps ahead, but she was out of sight. with a deep breath, be pushed his way through the shrubs, the leaves brushed against his face and shoulders. when he emerged on the other side, he almost collided with his sister, who had come to a sudden stop.
β robinpaw, whatβ β he began, but his words faltered as he followed her gaze.
robinpaw stood on the edge of a large, dark hole in the ground. the opening was wide, its edges jagged and uneven, as if the earth had been ripped apart. the haze of the moonlight only penetrated so far into the hole, leaving the depths cloaked in shadow. the air around it felt colder, as if the hole were drawing in the warmth from the surrounding fields.
β this, β robinpaw said excitedly, β is what i wanted to show you, β
stonechatpaw stared at the hole, a mixture of awe and unease bubbling in his chest. he took a cautious step closer, peering into the darkness, his nose wriggling as he sniffled.
the hole seemed to go down forever, a gaping maw that led who knew where, and the smell of damp earth rose from it, mingling with the scent of decaying leaves.
β what is it...? β he uttered with a gulp.
robinpaw shrugged. β dunno. i found it after the patrol earlier today. i thought it might some kind of tunnel, but i didn't go in, β
stonechatpaw's heart beat faster as he considered the implications. a tunnel could mean badgers or foxesβor something worse. but the hole seemed too large to be a simple burrow. it looked more like an old den, long abandoned, or perhaps something newly carved out by the storm.
β do you think it's even safe? β stonechatpaw asked, his unease growing as he studied the dark opening.
robinpaw gave him a mischievous grin. β only one way to find out, β
the tom's fur bristled at the thought of going in, but he couldn't let his sister go in alone. β robinpaw, should we tell someone β maybe tallskunk or redtail β before we do anything? β
robinpaw's expression faltered for a moment, a flicker of uncertainty crossing her face. she quickly masked it with her usual bravado. β if we tell the warriors, they will just take over and leave us out of it. come on, where's your sense of adventure? β she teased with a long, drawn out purr and a bump of her shoulder into his.
stonechatpaw looked from his sister to the hole, his mind racing. it wasn't just fear holding him back β it was the sense that whatever lay in that darkness was something they weren't ready for. but he found his sisters eagerness somewhat contagious, and despite his reservations, he felt a tug of excitement at the prospect of exploring the unknown.
β okay, β he said at last, β but we are't going too deep. just a quick look, then back to camp, β
robinpaw nodded, her eyes bright. β deal, β
the siblings stepped forwards, their paws sinking into the soft earth at the edge of the hole. stonechatpaw felt the weight of the earth above him as he and his sister crawled into the gaping hole. the tunnel sloped deeply downward, the entrance behind them shrinking as the two descended.
robinpaw led the way, her tail flicking back and forth, sometimes brushing against stonechatpaw's nose, as a slight reassurance that she was still there. but even with the comforting presence of his sister just ahead of him, an icy tendril of fear wound its way through his chest.
the air in the tunnel was thick and damp, carrying the scent of wet soil and decay. each step forward seemed to drag them deeper into the earth, further from the safety of the moonlit land above. the tunnels walls closed in around them, rough and uneven, pressing against their flanks as they moved. stonechatpaw's breath came shallow and quick, the oppressive darkness magnifying every sound β the scrape of their claws against the dirt, the soft, almost imperceptible shift of loose stones underfoot.
it was dark β darker than any night he'd ever known. the dim light of the moon outside was distant now, and the blackness swallowed them whole, thick and allβencompassing.
stonechatpaw could barely see the outline of robinpaw in front of him, just a vague shadow moving through the gloom. every so often, he caught a glint of her eyes when she glanced back at him, but even those brief moments of connection were quickly lost in the void.
the tunnel seemed to twist and turn unpredictably, each curve and dip disorienting them further. stonechatpaw's paws slipped occasionally on the slick, packed earth, his claws scraping for purchase. he focused on keeping his breathing steady, but with each step, the air felt heavier, almost as if the tunnel itself was trying to press him down, suffocating him with its weight.
robinpaw was silent as she led them, but he could sense his sisters tension. the confident flick of her tail had slowed, becoming more hesitant with each passing moment. it brushed against his face less often, and when it did, the touch felt almost frantic, as if she too was beginning to doubt this decision.
the further they traveled, the more the tunnel seemed to close in, the space growing narrower, the ceiling lower. stonechatpaw's shoulders brushed against the walls, and the rough stone scraped at his pelt. The silence was absolute, save for the occasional distant drip of water that echoed eerily through the passage. every sound was magnified, distorted by the darkness, creating a disorienting and unsettling effect.
stonechatpaw's heart pounded in his chest, each beat echoing in his ears. the deeper they went, the more his anxiety gnawed at him, whispering fears of what could be lurking just out of sight. the tunnel's darkness felt almost alive, a presence that watched them both with unseen eyes, waiting for the moment to strike. his imagination began to run wild, conjuring images of hidden dangers β badgers waiting in the shadows, and foxes with gleaming eyes, or something worse.
β rβrobinpaw, β stonechatpaw trembled, β maybe we should go back, β
robinpaw didn't respond immediately. her tail stopped moving, and for a moment, stomechatpaw feared she hadn't heard him β or worse, that something had happened to her.
then she spoke, her voice quieter than he'd ever heard it. β no, just a little further. i think... i think we're close to something, β
there was a waver in her tone, a crack in her bravery that made stonechatpaw's fur prickle. he wanted to trust her, but the darkness made every instinct scream for him to turn back, to flee to the safety of the surface.
still, he followed. each step became harder, and the air grew thicker, making his movements more laboured. the tunnel felt alive around them, as if the very earth was closing in, squeezing them into its depths.
the tunnel took another sharp turn. robinpaw halted suddenly. stonechatpaw nearly bumped into her, his heart leaping into his throat. β what is it? β
β i... i don't know, β robinpaw admitted shakily.
the air shifted, growing colder, and the walls seemed to close in, pressing harshly against their flanks.
a strange, pungent smell his robinpaw's nose, sharp and musky, cutting through the scent of mud. the sheβcat wrinkled her nose. stonechatpaw's nose twitched with disgust after it hit him and his fur bristled.
robinpaw suddenly stopped and her ears rotated left and right. it was a peculiar smell β thick and earth, with a sickly undertone that made their guts churn.
stonechatpaw's mouth dried with fear.
the earth ahead shifted. a low rumble echoed through the tunnel, and loose dirt fell from the walls and roof, sprinkling down like dust. then, as if in an answer to their gnawing terror, a heavy, warm breath blew through the tunnel, carrying with it a pungent, rancid stench.
with a yowl of panic, robinpaw scrambled over her brother, her claws digging into his shoulders as she bolted back up the tunnel, driven purely by terror. the tomβcat barely had time to react as his sisters frantic movement sent him stumbling. he could just about hear her desperate pawsteps fading quickly, leaving him alone in the darkness.
for a moment, stonechatpaw was frozen with fear. his body refused to move, as if the very darkness itself was holding him in place.
his ears burned with the sensation of the breath β hot, and undeniably close. a cold shiver ran down his spine, every hair on his pelt standing on end.
then, a deep, harrowing grumble reverberated through the tunnel, vibrating up through the ground beneath his paws. the sound was low and guttural.
a swift breeze brushed toward him, carrying with it the stench of the creature.
that was all it took to break the spell of terror that had rooted him in place. stonechatpaw turned on his heels and bolted, his paws slipping on the loose dirt as he scrambled to flee. the tunnel seemed to stretch on forever, the small dot of light at the end barely visible. but with each frantic step and bound, it grew larger.
the tunnel's uneven floor was treacherous but the fear within him drove him forward, faster and faster. his breath came in ragged gasps, his chest tight. he could hear the creature behind him, its larger form shifting in the darkness, the grumble growing louder and more menacing.
stonechatpaw's lungs burned as he pushed himself harder, the light at the tunnel's end growing steadily larger. he didn't dare look back, too terrified of what he might see, of the creature that could be just a mere whisker behind him.
finally, he burst out of the hole, and the cold night air hit him like a wave as he tumbled over his paws and crashed onto the grass. his heart thrummed, his vision swimming as he gasped for breath, his entire body trembling with the aftershock of adrenaline.
for a moment, all he could do was lay there, staring up at the stars that peeked through the leaves of a tree that sat over the top of the hole, his ears still ringing with the echo of the creature's growl.
nearby, robinpaw lay collapsed on the ground, heaving for breath, trembling, her eyes widened. but as she caught her brother's gaze, a shaky laugh escaped her.
β that... that was close, β panted the sheβcat.
stonechatpaw managed a weak nod, his breath still a little ragged, but before he could respond, robinpaw's expression changed in an instant. her eyes widened even more than they already had, blown up in size, and almost as large as the moon in the sky above. without another word, she screamed and bolted, scrambling to her paws and fleeing from the patch she settled on.
stonechatpaw's heart lurched as he turned to see what had frightened his sister. and then he saw it, emerging from the mouth of the tunnel like a nightmare come to life.
a badger...
its massive body was hunched and scarred, the ragged fur matted with dirt and old blood. one of its eyes was clouded and blind, but the other gleamed with a cold, predatory light. its snout was twisted into a snarl, revealing yellowed, broken teeth, and its breath came in harsh, ragged bursts that stank of rot.
for a moment, stonechatpaw was frozen again, caught in the gaze of the monstrous creature. the badger let out a low, rumbling growl. it claws scraped against the dirt as it advanced toward him, each step slow and deliberate, like a predator toying with its prey.
stonechatpaw's mind screamed at him to run, but his legs felt like they were made of stone. the fear that had driven him up the tunnel now pinned him in place, his heart racing as the badger loomed over him, its breath hot and rancid against his face.
just when it seemed the badger was about to strike, some small, fierce part of stonechatpaw snapped back to life. with a desperate yowl, he turned and fled, his paws pounding against the earth. the grass and bushes blurred around him as he ran, the only thought in his mind the desperate need to escape, to get away from the terrifying creature that had emerged from the darkness of the tunnel.
