In the early 15th century, the rise to power of the Medici family transformed what was originally a simple merchant family into one of the wealthiest banking families in Florence.
This rise did not come without getting their hands dirty and attracting the envy and dislike of certain aristocratic families. As they built their fortune, they also made many enemies. The Albizzi family is a perfect example. After the death of Rinaldo and his son Ormando, the Medici might have thought that their main rivals had been eliminated and that they would now be able to enjoy some peace and quiet, but the quarrels with the Albizzi gave way to those with the Pazzi. And these were more intractable than those with the Albizzi.

Two generations later, when Lorenzo became head of the family, like his grandfather Cosimo and his father Piero before him, the rivalry between the two banking families flared up again. But it is not only Lorenzo's rise to power that upsets the dynamics of the Medici family, but also the arrival of Isabetta Borgia - to whom Piero de' Medici is godfather - at their home earlier that year.
Jacopo Pazzi takes a dim view of Isabetta's arrival in Florence, convinced that friendship with the Borgia family will bring friendship with the Pope. Although the Pazzis and Medici have their own internal conflicts, they are not the only ones with family quarrels, and Isabetta ends up unwillingly caught up in the affairs of both families, for even far from Rome, she too cannot escape her family and its designs.
But Isabetta has to deal with something more heady and unpleasant than the political machinations of Florence and Rome. Giuliano de' Medici. Handsome as a Greek god and arrogant to a fault. While the two can't seem to stay away from each other, they don't get on very well. While her friendship with Francesco Pazzi is reassuringly simple, her relationship with Giuliano de' Medici, with whom she lives every day, is quite the opposite. But perhaps it is not so much the manoeuvres of the one or the schemes of the other that put her at the centre of the conflict between the Medici and the Pazzis, but rather the interest that two of their members have in her.
Isabetta, who could have been the key to reconciliation between the two Florentine families, may prove to be nothing more than a new flame in the blaze of their rivalry.

Florence may not be at the centre of Europe, but it is at the very heart of political intrigue.
