the plan that goes sideways
Asher, Lucas, Erica and Max had been dropped off at the Creel house. The four had taken their shoes off before entering the house, just in case Vecna would hear them wandering around, which they didn't want until their part of the plan was up. So, as they entered the house in dead silence, Asher had realised how creepy the house looked at night. During the day, the house sort of freaked him out, but now knowing that this house is a part of his family history and looking around it while it is nighttime just made the house even more horrifying. While looking around the house, he noticed things that he didn't the first time. He wasn't sure whether it was because he saw the house as it originally was when Vecna was showing Asher his past, or if it was because that he noticed habits that Asher himself did at his own home. For example, the bowls were stacked right next to some old cereal boxes and there were labels on each shelf in the fridge for certain foods, just like Asher always does. Asher had started noticing that some of his habits weren't just a thing he does, but a thing that his family does.
As Asher walked into the living room, he saw Max sat on one of the couches, so he decided to go and join her, which made Max pick up her notepad and pen. After doing this, Max holds up her notepad to show that she has written "Hi", which makes Asher do the same, making the two smile at each other.
"I'm glad you're here" Max writes, holding up the notepad so Asher can see. The two were both scared of losing each other, so the two wanted to spend as much time together as possible. While Asher was worrying about how Eddie and Dustin were doing, he knew he made the right decision to go with Max. As long as the three of them made it out unharmed, Asher was going to be okay, no matter what happened to him.
"Me too" Asher writes in his horribly handwriting to show to Max, before getting a blank page out and writing "Where are Lucas and Erica?"
"They're outside" Max writes to show to Asher before getting another page to write something else, but gets stopped when they see a light flashing into the room, knowing that they were at their stage of the plan.
So, the two make their way up to the attic where they knew Vecna would be, and Max takes off her headphones. Asher hated the idea of Max being the distraction, but he knew that no matter how hard he tried, he wasn't going to be able to talk Max out of it, so, he just wanted to be there for her in case anything didn't go to plan. As the two walk further into the attic, the light that Max is carrying starts to shine brighter, showing them that Vecna is where they're standing, but suddenly, the light goes away.
"What are you waiting for, asshole?" Max asks, looking at the light "Hmm? I'm right here. I'm right here! I know you can hear me. I know you can read my thoughts. Even the worst ones. Maybe mostly the worst ones" She says before placing the light down and taking off her Walkman, placing it near Asher, before she sits down on the floor "I thought about what you said. About how I wanted my brother to die. I thought that you were just trying to upset me. To anger me. But you weren't, were you? You were just telling the truth. Billy, he made my life a living hell. Every chance he got. So, sometimes... when I would lie in bed at night, I would... I would pray... I would pray that something would happen to him. Something awful. I knew he drove too fast, so I would imagine him crashing. Dying in that stupid car. I just... I wanted him out of my life. Forever. I wanted him to disappear. The day that he died... I think that's why I just stood there. Watched. Not because I was scared or weak. But because... I didn't know if he deserved to be saved. And I've tried to forgive myself. I've tried, but... I can't. I can't. So now... now, when I lie in bed at night... I pray that something will happen to me. That something terrible will happen to me. So that's why I'm here. Because... I just want you to take me away. And I want you to make me disappear."
"Max" Asher says as he kneels down next to her, wanting to tell her that none of it was her fault, but as soon as he saw Max's white eyes, he knew that Vecna had gotten to her before he could even talk to her "Max? Can you hear me? Max, come on, Max!" Asher shouts before quickly getting up, grabbing the flashlight and shining it out of the window, signalling to Lucas and Erica that it was time for phase three of the plan, before kneeling back down next to Max. After around ten minutes, Asher got tired of waiting and went to go shine the flashlight out of the window again. Asher just wanted this to be all over with. To know Max is safe. To know Eddie is safe. To know that everyone he cares about is safe.
But Asher stops shining the flashlight out of the window when he hears footsteps coming up to the attic, making him turn around to see Jason walking over to Max. "Jason? You can't be here right now, man" Asher says to Jason, who just ignores him as he walks closer to Max.
"What the hell have you done?" Jason asks as he doesn't look away from Max.
"Jason, you need to leave" Asher says again.
"Is that what you did to Chrissy?" Jason asks as he kneels down by Max "Hi. Can you... can you hear me?" Jason asks Max.
"Jason, don't touch her" Asher warns him as he walks closer to him "Look, man, you have no idea what's going on. You need to leave. I'm not messing around, man, you need to leave."
"Hey, back up! Back up!" Jason shouts as he stands up, pulling a gun out, directing it towards Asher "Not another step."
"We don't need to do this" Asher says, holding his hands up "You don't need a fucking gun."
"I hope you're right" Jason says, looking Asher dead in the eyes "Is there anyone else in the house?"
"Just me" Asher tells him. As much as he wanted to punch Jason in the face right now, he couldn't. Asher couldn't risk being shot and not being able to help Max, so he tried his best not to get angry or too pissed off.
"Turn around" Jason commands.
"What?" Asher asks "You going to shoot me in the back of the head or something?"
"Turn around!" Jason shouts, making Asher reluctantly turn around "And put down the flashlight."
"Okay, man" Asher says, dropping the flashlight out of his hands.
"And empty your pockets" Jason commands "Empty your pockets!"
"Dude, I got nothing in my pockets" Asher says, turning his pockets inside out, showing that he has nothing.
"Now, this is what's going to happen" Jason says "I'm gonna back away to the top of the stairs there. Then I'll watch as you wake her up from whatever the hell this is."
"I can't" Asher says as he turns back around "If I wake her too soon, we'll all die. As much as I want to wake her up and not want her to do this shit, I can't wake her up."
"No. You don't wake her up right now, Hart, you die" Jason says with a glare, taking the safety off from the gun "Just you."
"You don't want to do that" Asher mentions "Look, there is so much more than just this going on, okay? It sounds crazy but there is a whole other world, and if this psycho from the other world kills enough people, he'll get into ours. We're trying to stop it and stop people from dying, even if it means saving your stupid ass. There's no cult and Eddie isn't going around murdering random people."
"You expect me to believe that?" Jason asks Asher as he walks closer to him.
"It's the whole truth, swear to God" Asher tells Jason.
"Then why was Chrissy at Eddie's trailer?" Jason asks.
"To buy drugs" Asher tells Jason "She was going through a rough time and she thought that drugs were her only solution, okay? She wasn't a druggie, she was just a girl who needed an escape."
"Liar!" Jason shouts.
"Chrissy was seeing things, terrible things. Things that this psycho wanted her to see" Asher explains "She was scared and wanted to be normal again. Chrissy was just a scared girl who needed help."
"That's how I know you're lying" Jason mentions "If Chrissy was scared, if Chrissy wanted help, she would've come to me! Not Eddie! Not that freak! Never!"
"You're wrong about Eddie" Asher says with a glare.
"No" Jason tells Asher "Just like how I wasn't wrong about you. A psychopath druggie, going around helping his freak of a friend murder innocent people."
"I would rather be a psychopath than be like you" Asher argues back.
"You have five seconds to wake her up" Jason tells Asher, who just stands there "Four. Three" Jason says before he goes to shoot the gun, making Asher bend down to dodge it before tackling Jason to the ground.
Jason repeatably started punching Asher in the face, full of rage, before pushing him over, knocking Max's Walkman onto the floor. As Jason walks over, getting closer to Asher, he stands on the Walkman, snapping it under his feet. "Shit" Asher mutters under his breath before Jason kicks Asher in the stomach, making him groan in pain, before going to get up to fight back. But, before Asher could do anything, Jason started punching him in the face once again. The blows came fast and hard, each one a reminder of just how dangerous Jason had become. But Asher fought back. He twisted, bucking Jason off balance. With a surge of energy, he shoved him away, scrambling to his feet. His head throbbed, his vision blurred, but he stood tall, unwavering. As much as Asher tried to fight back, Jason had the upper hand, hitting Asher in the vase with a glass vase, making Asher's eyesight blurry in his right eye, which was now covered with blood.
As Asher gets up, he hits Jason, knocking him off balance, however Jason was still standing and grabbed Asher by the neck, dragging him towards the wall, making Asher choke on his own breath. As Asher tried to breath, he looked over at Max, who had started to float into the air, and seeing that gave Asher the motivation he needed to break free from Jason's hold. So, Asher grabbed Jason by his hair, throwing him into the window. While Jason was caught off guard, Asher starts repeatedly throwing forceful punches to Jason's face, making Jason go unconscious. But as Asher turned around to check on Max...
All Asher heard was the breaking of Max's bones.
