the aftermath of hurricane agatha
Hurricanes in the Outer Banks were not unusual, but they did cause damage... well to The Cut. The Cut is the poorer side of the island, which Matthew is not from, he's from Figure 8, the rich side of the island. Matthew was grateful that he's from Figure 8, since they are able to have a hurricane and have everything pretty much go back to normal the next day; but he still felt bad for the people who live on The Cut. For the rest of the summer, the people from The Cut will be trying to put everything back to normal and will not have power. Matthew always found the difference between the two sides of the island unfair, but it's not like he could do anything about it. He's just a sixteen year old who doesn't have any influence over the people on Figure 8; so as much as he wanted to get the people on Figure 8 help out those on The Cut, he just couldn't.
"Matt! Matt! Matt!" Harlow shouts as she runs into his room. Harlow is Matthew's best friend and has been since the fifth grade and is one of his two only real friends. Matthew and Harlow's parents believe that the two would grow up and get married at some point; but Matthew and Harlow knew that would never happen. They are both not each other's types and they see each other as siblings, not like a relationship. "Can I use your TV?" Harlow asks as she sits down on Matthew's bed.
"Why do you need to use my TV?" Matthew asks Harlow with a laugh "You have your own."
"Yeah, but my generators aren't working yet because my dad, being the asshat he is, hasn't bothered to sort them out yet, so we're living like animals" Harlow says with a sigh "I need to catch up on Cobra Kai before the new season comes out. I'm invested now, I need to keep watching."
"You know the people on The Cut are living without power for the rest of the summer?" Matthew asks Harlow. Every time Harlow would complain about the little things in life, Matthew felt like he sometimes had to remind her that there are people who have it worse than her. Obviously, he didn't do it all of the time, but when she complained about things such as not having power for an hour after a hurricane, he had to tell her that people have it worse.
"Yeah, you're point?" Harlow asks "It's different for them. They are used to it at this point, I'm not."
"But they shouldn't have to be used to it" Matthew tells her "They're people too. They should be treated the same as us."
"Matt, I love you, you know that right?" Harlow asks Matthew, making him nod his head "And I love the fact that you believe everyone should have equal rights, but that's not how the world works. For the world to work, there are people who have things, like us, and then there are people who don't have things, like people on The Cut. The quicker you work that out, the easier it'll be for you."
"But it's just--" Matthew goes to say before his father, Ward Cameron, walks into the room.
"Matt, can you come downstairs for a minute?" Ward asks before seeing that Harlow is also in the room "Nice to see you again, Harlow. How are your family doing? Many damages?"
"Hi Mr Cameron" Harlow says with a small smile "They're all doing fine and there isn't too much damage, but we still don't have power yet."
"Well, you can tell your parents that they're welcome to use our resources whenever they'd like" Ward says to Harlow with a smile.
"Thank you very much, Mr Cameron, I will let them know" Harlow says to Ward with a smile.
"Matthew, can you please come with me?" Ward says to Matthew again.
"I'll be back in a minute, Har" Matthew says to Harlow before following his dad out of his room and down the stairs to see a woman he doesn't recognise "So, what's up? Is everything okay?"
"This is Lana, Scooter's wife" Ward introduces the woman.
"It's very nice to meet you" Matthew says to Lana with a small smile before shaking her hand.
"You too" Lana mumbles out, matching Matthew's small smile.
"Sarah told me that you two were storm prepping with him" Ward says to Matthew "Is that right?"
"Yeah, he was helping prep the Druthers for the storm" Matthew says.
"Last night?" Ward asks, making Matthew nod his head "And did he go out after that?"
"After he left here?" Matthew asks, making Ward nod his head "Well, he didn't really mention anything about where he was going, but I just guessed he was going home 'cause of the hurricane."
"Are you sure he didn't mention anything?" Lana asks "Not a phone call, message or anything?"
"I don't remember him mentioning anything, I could check my phone to see if he left a message or something if you want?" Matthew suggests "Is everything okay?"
"Everything is okay" Ward tells Matthew as he pulls Lana along to walk away from him "He's probably just hunkered down somewhere."
"Did you get asked about Scooter too?" Sarah asks as she walks over to her twin brother. Matthew and Sarah have always been close, ever since they were babies. The two grew up together and had all of their milestones together, so of course they were close.
"Yep" Matthew says with a sigh "He'll be fine. Might of just got drunk last night and ended up crashing somewhere else?"
"Hopefully" Sarah says with the same sigh as Matthew.
