Alright, you have the love interest down, but who should your character be? The chances of your character being a peasant and meeting one of the York boys or any other of the nobles in show is slim, so they probably won't be that. Maybe they're a maid in the castle however? Maybe they attend the queen or the king himself directly? Or maybe they're a member of an English noble house. Or maybe an esteemed foreign royal.
If you go with the latter two, it may be difficult to choose between the many MANY noble families in medieval Europe. Here are some well known noble houses you could use:
ENGLISH NOBILITY
House of Lancaster
The House of Lancaster is the enemy of our favorite York boys. They ruled England before Edward IV took the throne. They and the York all belong to one house, the House of
Plantagenet, but that was split into the two cadet branch. House Lancaster was founded by John of Gaunt.
Honestly there are lot of Lancastrian OC (I have my own) but honestly are you a TWQ fanfic author if you haven't even thought about making a Lancastrian OC?
House of York
My personal favorite for the War of the Roses (though I love Lancaster too rip). I don't think I've ever seen an OC that was a York. It makes sense I guess since everyone writes for the York boys and they wouldn't marry their sister 💀 this isn't Keeping up with the Targaryens.
But honestly I think a York OC would be very interesting to read about.
House of Beaufort
House Beaufort is the third cadet branch of the House of Planatagenet. It was formed with the legitimization of John of Gaunt's children. They were key players in the War of the Roses. The heiress to the house, Margaret Beaufort became the queen mother through her son, Henry VII after the Battle of Bosworth in 1485.
House Neville
Me when the Nevilles:
Honestly they're great. Nothing compares. Warwick? An icon. Isabel? My wife. Anne? My queen. Why wouldn't you want your OC to be a part of this family. I don't even think I need to say anything about them because of their prominent role in TWQ, but the Nevilles supported the Yorks more than anyone else. In my eyes, they can do no wrong 😌
House Percy
This house is utter trash simply because they're enemies of the Nevilles. Also their sigil is so ugly it burns my eyes when I look at it.
Still they were a prominent English noble house and is an option for your OC's family. Plus I think it could be a great dynamic with the show being so focused on the Nevilles.
House Howard
While they weren't as prominent during the TWQ timeline as they were during the Tudor reign, they were still a higher standing noble house. John Howard was the first Duke of Norfolk and died fighting for Richard III at Bosworth. My OC Grace has a Howard mother and cousin who are important characters in the book.
Also the name Howard just sounds cool to me idk why.
House of Beauchamp
The Beauchamps were an English noble family during the War of Roses. They held the title of Earl of Warwick, which past onto Anne Beauchamp, Countess of Warwick. She was the wife of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, also known as the Kingmaker. She was also the mother of Isabel and Anne Neville.
Margaret Beaufort's mother was also a Beauchamp.
House of Tudor
The House of Tudor was an English noble house that supported Lancaster during the War of the Roses. They would later win the Battle of Bosworth and Henry Tudor would be crowned Henry VII of England. (Note: the coat of arms I show here was what they used before they ascended the throne. Specifically it was the coat of arms of Owen Tudor, father of Jasper Tudor and grandfather Henry Tudor. Henry himself used a welsh dragon as his coat of arms until he adopted the Tudor rose)
I think writing a Tudor OC would be super interesting. I might do it myself one day but as we all know I'm terrible at updating regularly so I'll probably never finish my books 💀.
It would make for a very interesting dynamic between the TWQ characters and your OC.
FOREIGN NOBILITY
House of Stewart/Stuart
Let's start with England's next door neighbors. House Stewart reigned as Kings and Queens of Scotland from 1371 until 1714. They would later become the rulers of England in 1603. The name was originally spelt as 'Stewart' until Mary, Queen of Scots adopted the French spelling 'Stuart'.
Scotland's relations with England were rough to say the least. It's not far fetched to say a princess of house Stewart would be married off to a member of the English royal family to smooth things over.
It was not uncommon for a monarch to make two of their children the same name. Those poor children lmao
House of Valois
The ruling family of France at the time was House of Valois, and they HATED the English. But it's fine because the English hated them back (same England, same). This hatred was a long time thing, but it had reached an all time high with the Hundred Year's War, which had only recently come to a close (1453, TWQ starts during the year 1464).
House of Valois' succession of the French throne was an unexpected thing. They were a cadet branch of the House Capet, which had ruled France until 1328. When King Philip IV the Fair died, he left behind three sons and a daughter. All three of sons would die young however, and without a male heir. The last of his sons, Charles IV died in the year 1328, and three claims to the throne were brought up. Philip, Count of Valois, Joan II of Navarre and Edward III of England. Joan's claim was quickly cast aside, seeing as she was a woman and women weren't allowed to inherit the throne. Edward III – or rather his mother, Isabella of France – claimed the throne on the basis that he was the only grandson of King Philip IV. The French did not accept his claim, because it ran through the distaff (maternal) side of his parentage.
With that, Philip of Valois took the throne as Philip VI of France. With this, the Hundred Year's War ensued.
Many French noblewomen had become Queen's of England at this time. Just to name a few: Isabella of Angoulême, Eleanor of Provence, Margaret of France, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Matilda, Countess of Boulogne, Isabella of France, Isabella of Valois, Catherine of Valois, Margaret of Anjou.
House of Évreux
The House of Capet (Kings of France) had many MANY cadet branches. The House of Évreux is one of those (hence the French lilies in their coat of arms). They ruled over Navarre until 1441 when its last member, Blanche I of Navarre died. The throne would pass to her son, Charles Trastámara. But who says you can't make your OC a distant cousin or something. Have fun with it.
House of Bourbon
Another cadet branch of the House of Capet. They were a high standing noble family in France and would become Kings of France in 1589 when the last King from the Valois dynasty died. I honestly don't have much to say for the cadet branches of the Capetian dynasty that didn't rule France during TWQ timeline, but just know of their ✨existence✨
House of Anjou
The last cadet branch of the House of Capet I will be mentioning. They were a French noble house that bore the title of Count of Anjou. The House of Anjou can be split into two: the Capetian House of Anjou (they bore many royal titles such as the Kings of Sicily, Poland, Naples, Hungary, Croatia) and the House of Valois-Anjou (Counts of Anjou, Dukes of Lorraine). I recommend using the latter. Margaret of Anjou is a member of this house.
House of Trastámara
The House of Trastámara was a noble house of Spain. They ruled as both the Kings of Aragon and the Kings of Castile. The two kingdoms were united as one when Isabella I of Castile married Ferdinand II of Aragon in the year 1469. Their daughter Catherine of Aragon would later become Queen of England when she married Henry VIII.
House Trastámara is among my favorite houses of medieval Europe and I would LOVE to see more people write OCs that come from this house!
House of Aviz
I literally never see OCs from this house. Like EVER. Not a single one except for the one sitting in MY drafts. The House of Aviz held the title of King of Portugal since the year 1385. They later claimed the throne of Aragon as well.
They're iconic I don't care what anyone says. Not everyone gets to produce women like Isabella of Portugal 😌✋.
House of Jagiellon
The Jagiellons were the Kings of Poland, Hungary and later Bohemia (for a few short years, rip Louis II of Hungary 😪 you were missed). You can use them as your OCs family if you want to be completely original because this is another noble house I've never seen used in my life. Their first King of Poland was married to Jadwiga of Poland which in and of itself is a win.
House of Griffin
Is the only reason I'm adding this house here because their sigil is a griffin? Perhaps 😃. But also because one of its members, Elizabeth of Pomerania, was the wife of my favorite King of Bohemia (my nationality reveal I guess) and her daughter Anne of Bohemia became Queen of England. That's kinda unimportant but I get carried away so here is that little tidbit of information.
Anyways, the House of Griffin ruled over the Duchy of Pomerania and even held the title of King of Denmark, Norway and Sweden through Eric of Pomerania. He held those titles until 1439 (Denmark and Sweden) and 1442 (Norway) and you could make the OC his daughter (or rather granddaughter because he was OLD at that time)
If any of the information here is wrong, feel free to correct me!
