Ray POV
"Ma'am, I'm going to have to ask you to step back over the fence," a voice calls. I startle and my foot slips over the edge, but I grab the fence.
"No." My voice is shaky when it comes out. I hear footsteps approaching slowly, and when I turn, I see two EMTs and a cop approaching slowly. They are still a good distance away.
"Ma'am, it's not worth it to-"
I jump.
The water is cold when I hit it, and the cut on my neck burns with the lake water. But after I hit the water, everything goes black.
Noen POV (we stan Noen Eubanks)
"She can't kill herself. She can't. We haven't even met her yet," I mumble into his chest.
"I know, bub. I know. I'll watch the phones if you want to sleep," he says as he rubs my back. I nod into his chest and fall asleep quickly.
"Hey, Noen. Bub, you gotta wake up," Chase whispers into my ear, shaking me gently.
"What? Why?" I mumble into his chest.
"Your phone was ringing so I answered it. It was a hospital down in Georgia calling you. They said they found her phone, and you were the last person to text her. Ray jumped off a cliff, bub." Chase's hand shakes as he rubs my back. "They said she slit her neck before she jumped, and the water was freezing, so she's still unconscious, but she's in the hospital now. They said she'll make it."
I sigh against him and sit up. "She-She jumped?"
Chase nods. "The officer that was calling said she should regain consciousness in the next few days."
"Oh my gosh," I whisper, laying back down against his chest. He rubs my back. "Oh my gosh."
"She's gonna be okay, Noen. And besides, we go down to Atlanta tomorrow for a meet and greet. We can drive over and visit her when we get there because the meet and greet isn't for a few days."
"Okay. Okay. Yeah." I nod and sit up, sliding off his lap and laying back against the headboard. "Are we gonna tell the rest of them?"
"Tell us what?" Jaden mumbles from the other bed. We both look over at him. "Yeah, yeah. I'm up. Heard a phone ringing. What are you gonna tell us?"
"Yeah. Next time whisper loud enough for us to hear," Josh says with a groan, sitting up. I roll my eyes at them and lay my head on Chase's shoulder.
"Ray, uh, slit her throat and jumped off a cliff into a lake. The officer I talked to said she would make it, but she's unconscious now and won't wake up for a few days." He rubs my bare shoulder, and I cuddle up to him and pull the blanket around me, still cold. "She's in a hospital in Georgia. We were thinking about going to see her tomorrow after we got to Atlanta."
"That sounds good. Who's getting in the shower first?" Josh asks as he slides back under the blankets.
"Well, obviously not you," Jaden mumbles, swatting at him. A small yelp emerged from under the blanket. "I'll go."
Jaden stumbles out of bed and into the bathroom, and Josh continues sleeping. Chase rubs my arm.
"I'll go get the other room up to start getting ready for the show later. I'll tell them what happened, too."
"Okay," I mumble, sliding under the blanket.
"You gonna be okay, bub?" He rubs my hair. "I know you really cared 'bout her."
"Yeah. I'm just gonna sleep until it's my turn for the bathroom." I curl up under the covers.
"Okay, buddy."
During the meet and greet, I'm in a funk. I try to hide it, and even though nobody asked anything about it, I'm worried some of the fans might have noticed. I noticed Anthony, Griffin, and especially Payton were a little off, too. Let's hope nobody noticed them, or we are in serious trouble.
We all go to dinner after, then watch some movie. Everyone is either tired or obnoxiously slap-happy by then, so we pack up our bags after and go to sleep.
In the morning, we all grudgingly get up and get ready before heading down to the bus. It's still early, maybe 7, when the bus heads out.
"Hey, can I sit here?" I look over and see Payton standing at the side of the seats I'm spread across. He scratches the back of his neck awkwardly and sighs. "I want to talk."
I don't say anything, just sit there and look at Payton. "About what?"
"Can you put me out of my misery and just say yes?" he asks, clearly annoyed and stressed.
"I could, but you know the whole 'it's like I pushed her over the edge of a cliff' and then she actually jumped off a cliff is a little hard to get past right now. So if you want to take your chances with sitting by me, go ahead. But I'd be careful. I make no promises that you'll leave here alive." His eyes grow wide. "I like watching you squirm." I swing my legs down off of the other seat, and Payton slowly sits next to me. "What do you want to talk about?"
He sighs and looks around the bus. I sat in the back so I could sleep, so nobody is sitting directly in front or to the side of us.
Payton looks down at his hands and sighs again. "I just want you to know that I didn't mean to do...whatever I did. I didn't lie, but I didn't tell her that everything. I didn't tell her that they were sitting out there on the balcony with me and heard everything, so now she hates me because she can't trust me. And I don't blame her for hating me because now I hate myself. And I know you hate me now, too, because I drove someone to the point they tried to kill themself. Someone that, for however short of a time you knew them, you cared for." He turns to look at me. "I'm sorry."
I look out the window with a deep sigh, then turn to face him. "That was a good speech. I do kind of hate you now. I might get over it soon, I might not. I'll let Ray decide that. But you shouldn't be apologizing to me. You should be apologizing to her. The three of you kind of screwed up. The rest of us are planning on going to see her tonight. You need to come along. Give her a speech like you gave me."
He stares at the seat in front of him and nods slowly. "Yeah. Yeah, you're right. Okay. Do you think she'll ever forgive me?"
"I don't know, bud. That's for her to decide."
"Okay." Payton nods and heads back up towards the front on the bus. I curl back up on the seats and fall asleep quickly.
