Prologue

My dreams were about to come true. I was backstage in the Blue Moon Theater, getting ready to sing with my idol, Aidan Gallagher. I poked my head out, and I looked at the crowd that was slowly but surely beginning to form. My mouth was becoming dry, my palms sweating.

I turned around, and I saw Aidan was standing right across from me, tuning his guitar. I had listened to his music for a long time, followed him on social media when he was on NRDD. And now, here I was, just a normal girl getting ready to share my talent with the world. Aidan looked up at me and gave me that sweet smile that melted my heart every time.

"Don't be nervous. You're going to do great out there," He said. I nodded, and I looked back into the crowd, and I was shocked to see that the crowd nearly packed the whole theater. I took a sip from my small water bottle, and Aidan and I headed onto the stage, and the crowd started cheering almost immediately. Aidan and I waved to people in the crowd, and I heard a few people say my name. Then, slowly, the sounds of people calling my name grew louder and louder until they were practically screaming, "SERENA!!!"

My eyes flew open, and I saw that my Aunt Mary was practically in my face, her brown eyes piercing my soul. "What is it, Aunt Mary?" I asked, sitting up in the bed. "I called your name for about ten minutes. Are you deaf?" she asked. I shook my head, and she slightly got out of my face. "You need to make breakfast!" she growled. Damn it. It was only a dream, I'm still stuck in this prison. "O-okay, give me a few minutes," I said, getting out of bed. "NOW!" She shouted.

Ever since my parents died in a car crash last year, I had been sent to live with my evil Aunt Mary, and her two devious daughters, Alexa and Isabelle. Alexa was about my age with long brown hair and blue eyes, and she was the lazy one out of the two. Isabelle was twelve and looked exactly like her sister. And she was the most greedy, she would always ask for more food even though I made plenty for everyone, and every time I bought myself something sweet to eat, she got her hands on it before I could even take a bite of it.

I didn't have much time before I had to leave for school, so I quickly made some eggs for everyone. Alexa likes her eggs sunny side up, Isabelle likes hers scrambled, and Aunt Mary likes hers poached. I grabbed the Styrofoam container that had the eggs and made them while Alexa and Isabelle spewed insults at me. "Look at her. Poor Serena is not so serene!" Alexa sneered. "Look at her clothes, all so shabby," Isabelle cackled.

I tried not to pay attention to the things that they were saying, but no matter how hard I tried to block them out, it didn't work. Then, I heard Aidan's voice in my head as he was singing 4th of July, and a smile spread across my face. "Kiss me like it was the fourth of July, fireworks froze like stars in the sky. I'll always remember the fourth of July, the look in your eyes," I sang softly, as I placed the plates full of eggs on the table.

"This is it? Just eggs?!" Isabelle asked. "Yes, I don't have enough time to make you a full breakfast, so you'll have to settle for eggs," I answered, trying to sound as polite as possible. Alexa stood up from her chair and pushed her plate off the table and onto the ground, smashing it into a thousand pieces. "That should teach you to make me more breakfast! Now, go cut up some strawberries and sprinkle them with sugar!" she demanded as I swept up the mess that she had made.

"Yes, Alexa," I mumbled. By the time I had met their desires, I heard a car honk at the front of the house. I quickly ran to my room and put some nice clothes on, and grabbed my backpack and when I stepped outside, I saw my friends Vanessa and Ethan were waiting for me. "Hey, sorry I took so long," I said as I got into the car. "Let me guess. The evil gremlins ridiculed you for making their breakfast like usual?" Ethan asked. "Yep, you got that right," I answered as I looked out the window and watched as we drove past some of the palm trees of Los Angeles.
