Chapter Two

For the rest of the school day, all I could think about was the thought of Aidan walking through the halls of River Wren High. I wondered if he was going to be talking about it in a live stream later that night, so I kept my phone on vibrate so I would know if he did. Throughout classes, I kept looking down at one of my notebooks, it was a beautiful lavender journal, and it was special because my grandmother gave it to me when she was on her sickbed. She told me to write good things inside it, and I kept my promise to her. The only thing that I did put into it were song lyrics that I had thought about recently.

Another reason why I liked Aidan so much was because he inspired me to write music, and he told his fans never to give up and to believe in ourselves. After the fatal car crash, I was allowed to take a few things with me to my new home while everything else was going to be taken to an estate sale. I took the journal, a picture of my parents and me, and my acoustic guitar. I tried to work on my music for a while. But because of the outrageous demands of my family, unfortunately, I didn't have time to have any fun.

I was writing down the lyrics that popped into my head. I wanted to be free to do what I wanted and not be held back by all the unfair chores I had to do. I wanted to be on stage, presenting my music to the world, and possibly performing duets with other aspiring singers. "I can't believe that Aidan freaking Gallagher is coming to our school!" Vanessa said as we pulled out of our parking spot and started driving back to my prison.

"What do you think about that, Serena?" Ethan asked. I was silent for a moment as I looked down at my notebook and saw the lyrics that I had written about my song about one day being free from my cage. It was only a small paragraph, but it was a good start.

Like a bird, I'm free to fly,
Spread my wings and find my light
Like a bird, I'm up so high,
Out of the cage, it's my time to shine,
Like a bird, I'm free to fly,
So tell me, tell me
Why don't I?

"What is that?" Ethan asked. I looked up, and I could see that he turned his head to look into the backseat, and I worried that he had seen some of the lyrics that I had written on the ivory paper. "It's nothing, just a song that I've been working on," I answered, quickly closing the book before Ethan had the chance to look at it any further.

"Oh, cool," he said, turning to face the front again. Soon, we were back in front of my house, and I said my goodbyes to my friends and ran inside my room, hoping to get at least a small amount of work done before my aunt asked me to do more chores. I didn't have that much time, but at least I got a small amount of English and History homework done before I heard Aunt Mary shouting from across the hall for me.

"Yes, Aunt Mary?" I asked once I had made it to the living room. "I need you to take my laundry and wash them. I also need you to sort out my shoes, heels on one shelf, flats on the other, mop the floors, and get dinner on the table," she commanded. That sounds like so much work. How will I be able to get my homework done? I wasn't allowed to talk back to her, so I nodded my head and walked out of the room, wanting to get the chores done.

It was a tiring ordeal, sorting through my aunt's clothes, but as I pulled out some of the clothing and put them into piles, I couldn't help but admire some of her clothes. Shirts that were made by expensive brands, jeans with a custom fit, and of course, the different colored dresses that looked like something out of a magazine. I wonder what it would be like to be Aidan Gallagher, sitting in his garage working on and producing music, going on Instagram and YouTube, and having a good time.

After I completed the tiring chores, I trudged back to my bedroom and shut the door. I couldn't concentrate on the homework because my eyelids were becoming heavier and heavier with every passing second. I looked to the other side of the room and saw my guitar leaning against the wall, silently begging, "Come play with me," I got out of my bed and grabbed my guitar and journal, hoping to find a good melody for my song.

I gently plucked the guitar strings, testing for a good starting note. Then suddenly felt my phone vibrate in my pocket, and I pulled it out, and sure enough, it was a notification that Aidan was on a live stream. I quickly joined in, and I watched as Aidan's face appeared, and he started smiling as he was reading people's comments.

User1: Hi, Aidan!

User2: I can't wait to see you at River Wren High tomorrow!

Without a second thought, I quickly typed a comment and hoped that Aidan would notice it.

SereneCinderella: Hi, Aidan, how is it going?

Aidan's face continued to light up as the comments started coming in, and he said hi to a few people. "I'm doing great, SereneCinderella. Thank you for asking. I love your username, by the way," he smiled. I couldn't believe that he had read my comment, and I immediately felt my heart start to beat rapidly in my chest. "A lot of comments about me attending River Wren High tomorrow. How do I feel about it? I'm excited because I get to meet some of you guys,"

Aidan talked about the contest that he and his manager were having and gave everyone more information about it, and he also talked about what he hoped was going to happen while he was attending River Wren High. "I don't want you guys to treat me like I'm a celebrity at school. I want to live the life of a normal high schooler. Don't be afraid to sit down next to me at lunch or strike up a conversation," he said, his eyes looking into the camera.

It felt like those beautiful green eyes were looking into the murky depths of my soul, and it didn't feel like he was in the live stream. It felt like he was in the room with me, like we were having a conversation between friends.

"SERENA!!!" Aunt Mary called out. I quickly shut off my phone, hid it underneath my pillow, and ran out of the room to find out what Aunt Mary needed me to do now.
