Chapter Sixteen
That weekend, I kept looking at that video. It was gaining lots of attention. Some people in the comments were saying, "Whoever that girl is, she's a coward," While others kept saying that "She's the modern Cinderella, and Aidan's probably going to search for her," Even Alexa and Isabelle were talking about it at breakfast. I gave them plates full of French toast and berries while Alexa and Isabelle were trying to guess who the girl was. It was tempting to say that it was me, but I wasn't supposed to be there.
"Do you think that's Emily Kasten?" Isabelle suggested. "No, Emily dyed her hair brown over the summer. She used to be blond, though," Alexa answered. Aunt Mary didn't say a word at the table. And I was starting to grow worried that in her head, she suspected that it was me. "Well, whoever she is, she's a freakshow! Who runs away from Aidan Gallagher?" Isabelle smirked. Oh, so I'm a freakshow now? Great. I was tired of hearing their comments, so I subtly changed the subject.
When Monday came, I was not looking forward to going back to school. I was hoping that the attention from the video would die down, but it only skyrocketed. Aidan didn't say anything about it, no Instagram posts, no live stream, nothing. That morning, I felt sick to my stomach. Every once in a while, I would feel a strong pull, like someone was tugging at my organs. On the way to school, I told Vanessa to stop the car because I felt like I was going to throw up.
I quickly ran out of the car and hunched over a small bush, emptying the contents of my stomach. I had never felt this sick before, but I was scared that people would suspect that the girl was me because they were now comparing the shades of blond to the girl in the video, thanks to Alexa and Isabelle. "Are you sick?" Ethan asked when I got back in the car. "It's the video that has me worried. Everyone's talking about it!" I groaned, slamming my head my seat. "I mean, sooner or later, people are going to start suspecting that it's me!"
"It may not be the attention that you want, but honestly, seeing that small clip of your audition, it blew my mind. I think it blew Aidan's too," Ethan smiled. "But, that's not the point! The point is, people are commenting about me running away from him, like Forrest Gump! And now he has the purple notebook that I dropped on the way out," I sighed. When we got into the school, I tried to subtly keep a low profile.
In Biology, I noticed that Aidan was not in class. "Where's Aidan?" One of the girls behind me asked her friend. "I don't know, but did you see the video of that girl running away from him?" another girl sitting behind me asked. Then, the intercom came on, and the room went silent. "This is an announcement from the administration office," Mrs. Ketan's voice said from the overhead speakers. Mr. Sutherland told some chattering students to be quiet, and then we heard feedback from the intercom.
"Thank you, Mrs. Ketan. Hey everyone, it's Aidan, and I wanted to talk to you guys about something for a moment. This weekend, I held a second set of auditions in the auditorium, and I got to hear some of you guys sing. For those of you who auditioned, it was awesome to hear you sing. But, I met this one girl, and you dropped your notebook on the way out. I'd like to return it to you, but the problem is, I don't know your name. And this is important because you made it one of the best nights of my life," Aidan explained. He wants to return the notebook to me? I made it the best night of his life? I could feel my heart racing a thousand miles an hour inside my chest. And I was worried that the entire class could hear it.
"I love him!" A girl in the class blurted out. Everyone looked over at her, and Mr. Sutherland told her to be quiet. "So, if you are the girl who sang in front of me and dropped your notebook. Please tell me the lyrics to your freedom song, and I will give it back to you. Thank you, mystery girl. I'll be waiting," Aidan said before getting off the intercom. A split second later, the room erupted with conversation, and all the girls in the class started talking about the mystery girl.
"What have I done?" I whispered to myself, hoping that Mr. Sutherland would begin the class so people would stop talking about it.
