Sarah had attempted to leave the cottage only to be caught by Henry.
"Shouldn't you be sleeping? Father wouldn't approve." Henry told her as Mary appeared from her bedroom.
"I don't think I'm approving either." Mary added as she folded her arms over her chest. Sarah threw back her head, knowing her sister wouldn't let her go
"Oh, Mary. Please, don't be a shrew and tell." Sarah begged and Mary sighed.
"Just this once." Mary told her before she headed back to her bedroom to rest.
Agnes left the house, seeing most of the people heading to the woods, leaving. She headed over to Mad Thomas's small hut and knocked on the door twice, signalling it was her.
"Agnes." Thomas whispered and the man appeared behind her, causing her to turn round, letting out a gasp.
"Thomas, you scared me." She gasped as Thomas let out a mad chuckle.
"Well, if you're so scared go scurry off back at home," Thomas smirked as he brushed past the woman to get into his hut.
"You were the one that gave me the parchment at dusk yesterday." Agnes told him, as he entered his hut.
He quickly grabbed Agnes' hand pulling her inside as two girls began running into the village. He slowly closed the door as Agnes shot him a look. Thomas slowly looked out the crack in the hut and laughed to himself, Agnes' eyes widened as she saw Sarah and Hannah kissing. She didn't really care that they were both the same gender but was still shocked.
"Sinners, sinners." Thomas muttered and Agnes shook her head.
"I best be going." Agnes told him and with that she left.
It was the next morning, and Mary Fier was beyond angry with her older sister.
"Where is she?!" Mary shouted as she walked into the house, slamming down her basket full of fresh food.
"I'll go wake her." Henry sighed as he stopped scrubbing the floor to go wake his older sister. Mary let out a sigh and got down on her knees to begin scrubbing the floor.
Henry came back into the kitchen, and started to help his sister scrub the floors.
"Henry, you can go play with the other children. You needn't be bothering yourself with what Sarah should be doing." Mary told him as he continued to help out.
"You do most of the cleaning, I just want to help." Henry told and Mary sent him a smile.
"Go be a child. Run along and play." Mary told him, and Henry nodded, getting up and leaving to go play.
Sarah came into the kitchen, and started preparing scraps to feed Merryboy the family dog.
"Have you seen Merryboy?" Sarah asked as her sister emptied out the dirty water by throwing it outside.
"Not since this morning." Mary replied as she placed the bucket down near the door. "Why? Is he not answering your calls?"
Sarah shook her head and Mary let out a sigh as she poked her head round the open door, scanning the village for any sign of the dog.
"He might of gone in the fields to stretch his legs." Mary told her as she grabbed her shawl.
"I'll go and look for him." Mary announced, she left the cottage as Hannah Miller walked towards their cottage.
Agnes and Anne Rosier were sat on the steps on their home, as Agnes helped Anne sew her dress.
"You need to-" Agnes began before she looked up as she heard shouting from the Pastor's home.
Sarah was on the ground as the Pastor's wife shouted at her. The whole village seemed to stop as they watched the commotion.
"I wonder what happened." Anne pondered as Agnes put her hand on her sisters shoulder.
"Let us not worry about what is not our problem, sister. Now focus, you need to understand how to mend your own clothes." Agnes told her and Anne nodded as Mary Fier walked through the union.
Mary retuned home, taking off her shawl. She walked over to the table to see flour spilled on the table.
"Sarah, for heavens sake! Clean up after yourself!" Mary exclaimed as she heard a loud pig squeal outside.
She quickly rushed outside to see Henry throw up as Sarah stepped out of the pig's pen, covered in blood.
"Sarah, what have you done?" Mary asked as she ran over to Henry. Wrapping her arm round him, as Sarah let out an unsteady breath as she put down the axe.
"I did what had to be done." Sarah stated before she walked away from her two younger siblings.
"Come, Henry, let's get you inside." Mary spoke, as she lead her younger brother back inside to fetch him a drink.
Agnes stood with Katherine and Abigail as they watched some of the men try and unclog the water well.
"The dark one has come to harvest the bitter fruit of the evil we have sown. To feast on our misdeeds. And yet you all smile, blind to the horrors around us. But you see it now, don't you? He blocks our well, clogs it with our sin." Mad Thomas spoke as he paced up and down.
"My brother does go on." Katherine sighed, as Agnes let out a soft chuckle.
"He takes our water. He takes our life blood!" Mad Thomas continued as Sarah walked over to the three.
"What's happened? What's going on here?" Sarah questioned and the three turned to her.
"The buckets caught on something." Abigail replied as Katherine gave a nod.
The four turned to see many of the local men, struggling to get the well working again.
The well began working again and Katherine narrowed her eyes at it as the bucket came into view.
"A dead dog in the well!" One of the men screamed as one of the local women screamed.
"Our water! It's poisoned!" She cried as Katherine's eyes widened.
"Maybe your brother was right." Agnes breathed out as Thomas continued to speak.
"This is the work of the devil. He has come to stake our land. Who among you has welcomed the devil to union?" Thomas asked as he looked at the people gathered by.
"Whose lust?" He asked, as he turned to Agnes. "Whose sin?" With that he looked at Sarah.
"Oh, foolish Union. The devil has come and cast his darkness over us. And his darkness grows within each of us like a rot."
It was now the next morning and Agnes was sat with Mary Fier as her sister ran up to her.
"Constance wants me to accompany her to Church. Can I go?" Anne asked and Agnes chuckled.
"You needn't ask me, sister. Go ahead," She replied and with that Anne ran off to join Constance in the church.
"I wish my sister was like that." Mary sighed, and Agnes sent her a sympathetic smile.
"Sarah is a free spirit, Mary. She'll learn one day." Agnes assured her and Mary just gave a nod, hoping that day would come soon.
It had been two hours since Anne had disappeared to church with Constance. Agnes and Abigail, and a few mothers had been trying to get into the church for a good ten minutes when many others joined them.
Agnes had been pushed to the back, by many of the men causing her to get agitated.
"Constance!" Abigail yelled, as she tried to push through the crowd.
Mad Thomas grabbed Agnes by the shoulders, trying to help her reach the front.
"The devil has locked himself in there!" He shouted and Agnes sent him a look.
"Anne!" Agnes screamed, as Mary joined her side.
"My brothers in there." Mary whispered as people began to go round the other side.
Agnes, Mary and Mad Thomas ran round to the side as Sarah did.
"Sarah, Henry is in there." Mary cried as Sarah pulled her sister closer.
"We shall get him out." Sarah told her as her sister sobbed into her shoulder.
The three men, continued to try and break down the door. They finally did it allowing Solomon Goode to see inside.
"Keep everyone back." Solomon spoke, and Agnes became more worried.
"Anne! Anne!" Agnes screamed as she tried to get into the church.
Many more women joined them in trying to get in as Abigail shouted from beside Mary and Agnes.
After a lot more pushing and shouting, the women finally broke through the doors rushing inside.
"Move!" Mary screamed as she ran inside the church, scanning the pews to find Henry.
"Henry!" Her and Sarah screamed as they noticed him on the first row. They quickly ran past Solomon, heading towards their brother. They kneeled down in front of him as Mary lifted up his head, she let out a loud scream as she saw his eyes scratched out.
His body fell to the floor, limp as Mary began crying.
"Henry." She cried as she hugged his dead body.
Meanwhile, Agnes had just made her way through with Abigail both of them recognising their sisters sat together. Anne has her head rested on Constance's shoulder.
Abigail and Agnes both kneeled down and lifted up their siblings heads.
"Anne!" Agnes screamed, as she stared at her siblings face. Her eyes had been carved out, her dead body was now on Agnes' lap, as the older sister stroked her hair, crying.
Agnes ignored the shouts around her, as she continued to hug her sisters body. Abigail and her both cried as more they held their sisters dead bodies.
