๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ก๐๐ก๐, ๐๐๐๐ฆ๐ง๐๐ฅ๐๐ก๐, ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ก๐ and other rather violent words that start with b. The only words in her mind. Brainless, she thought (another word that starts with b), you are brainless. She tried to think, harder and harder, but thinking hurt, so she stopped.
Her eyes grazed her surroundings, she couldn't move her body (another for the count), but she could move her eyes. A metal bar, lodged beside her, pressing against her left shoulder, a thick metal bar, what were those called again? She titled her head downward, a metal pole, rebar, five, she thinks she counted, piercing through her abdomen, who else was pierced by rebar? She then looked to her right, just her eyes, not her head, but she saw more metal, a sheet this time, cutting directly into her neck. It wasn't in too deep, just slightly grazing, but just enough to make her bleed, b word number, what, six?
She could hear yelling outside, but couldn't quite make out the words. There were other noises, too; creaking, crying, sirens, a saw, too maybe. A voice sounded beside her, beside, another b word. The voice sounded again, but she wasn't sure of the words. Was it ma'am, or was it just a simple hello? She wasn't sure.
"Ma'am?" The voice was clear this time, she was right the first time. "Ma'am, can you talk to us? Tell us your name?" He asked, definitely a he, confirmed as she looked to her left. Her vision was blurry (8, for the count), but she could make out the mans short hair and straight jaw. Her name, that's what he asked, but what was it? What's my name? She couldn't think of it. What did it start with? B, maybe. No, she thought, that doesn't fit, that sounds wrong. What was it though?
"Ma'am, can you try to talk?" He asked, a new question. She tried, but her voice was less of a voice and more of a gargle, a choked gargle, but what was she choking on? Blood, maybe (theres another).
"I-" Another choke, but she said a word, that was progress. "Dont." A second, more progress. The man smiled in her peripheral, a soft, sweet smile. "Know." A third and another choked gargle.
"That's okay, that's okay, just take it easy, we'll get you out, don't worry." He smiled again, the same sweet smile.
๐๐ข๐๐๐ฌ ๐ฃ๐จ๐ฆ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ฆ๐๐๐ away from the vehicle, away from the woman inside. "How bad is it, Cap?" Chimney asked from beside the truck. Bobby shrugged, then crossed his arms.
"Can't really tell, there's an iron beam blocking the view of most of her body, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's injured her shoulder, I could see some bruising." Bobby explained, dropping his arms.
"Even worse from the right, can't see anything, there's a massive sheet of metal in the way." Hen started, walking out from the left side of the car, along with the truck pressed up behind it. "That same sheet of metal is cutting her neck, though. Doesn't look too deep, but we can't be sure." She finished before walking over to the ambulance and grabbing her med kit.
"We have to figure out a way to get her out." Eddie sighed, walking up the the group from the truck. "But I think we might have a bigger issue, look at the rods." He pointed to the metal poles piercing through the vehicle in the front.
Buck sighed, rubbing his hand across his face, "This girl doesn't stand a chance, does she?" He stared at the vehicle, his eyes squinting. "Wait," He started again, "Does that car look familiar to anyone else?" He asked, tilting his head.
The car wasn't anything special, a dark green Jeep Wrangler, nothing fancy or too interesting by anyone's standards, but Buck had a point. It was familiar, but nobody could place where exactly they saw it.
Cars passed behind them, brown-noser's brown-nosing as if it's a job. Some stopped, some just drove by slowly, but no one got out of their cars, no one except one familiar face. Bobbys face distorted into confusion before he walked up to the man standing panicked beside his car.
"Will?" Was all Bobby said. He didn't respond, just gestured to the house and attempted to ask what happened. "We're not too sure, we just know that that truck, it rolled back into the Jeep and the materials in the truck are possibly severely injuring the Jeep's driver. We're trying everything to get her out right now." Bobby then gestured to his team as they worked; Eddie stood in the back of the truck with a saw, cutting the poles. Buck stood behind him, stabilizing the truck. Hen was beside the Jeep, a med pack behind her as her and Chimney tried to pry the door open with the jaws of life. "Will, is this your house?" Bobby asked. Will, once again, couldn't voice his answer, just nodded.
Will then turned to face his car as Nora got out, a worried look on her face, "Will, what's going on? Is that-" She was quickly cut off by Will nodding then looking back to the scene.
"I think so." He sighed, then rubbed his face, the same way Buck had moments prior. "It looks like it, Nor." Tears pricked his eyes, he wanted it to be a lie, he was there just half a hour ago, talking to her, asking her about his sister, he was there.
"Will, do you know who's in that car?" Bobby questioned, lightly grabbing Will's shoulders. Will nodded.
"I think it's Naiara."
๐ก๐ข๐๐ฆ๐. ๐๐ข๐จ๐, ๐๐๐ก๐๐๐ก๐ noise (one more for the count). There was grinding as well, from behind her, but also some beside her. She couldn't make out exactly what it was, but it was familiar. A familiar sound, she couldn't think of a synonym that started with b.
The grinding and banging beside her stopped and the door popped open. "Hey, ma'am, we're here to get you out, okay?" The voice was kind, gentle. She looked beside her, over the metal, and saw kind eyes that belonged to a nice looking woman.
"Hen!" A voice from behind her called. Hen. The name was familiar, but she couldn't remember her own. The voice that called the name was also familiar, but she couldn't place it.
The kind woman smiled to her, told her she'd be right back, then turned away, along with a man. Only a few seconds later did the two run back to her, this time, with three other men.
"How can we be sure it's her? I mean, we can't even see her face." The familiar voice said.
"Buck, it's her car." The man with the sweet smile said. "Will confirmed it, same with Nora, there's no way that isn't Nai." He continued, his voice soft, soft enough that she could barely hear.
Nai. Is that my name? She thought. Nai, Nai, Nai, Nai. It can't just be that. Her mind began racing. Buck? Buck, why is that name familiar. She distracted herself. Buck, another b word. Buck, Buck, Buck, Buck.
Bobby? The name randomly popped into her head. Bobby. She recognized it then, the first thing she recognized. She reached her hand out, reaching for him. He took her hand almost as quickly as she reached out. Nai, she thought again, Naiara.
In an instant, she remembered it all. Her name, who she was, the 118, the conversation she had had just a half hour prior. Naiara Gallagher, born and raised near an Apache reservation in Austin, has a younger brother named Theo, a best friend named Jack, moved back to L.A over a year ago, went to talk to Will to try and clear things up. Tears slowly started to fall from her eyes as she looked over the beam and stared at her team.
"Please." She sobbed, then choked again.
Bobby squeezed her hand, "We'll get you out, Nai, I promise."
๐๐ฅ๐๐๐๐ง ๐๐๐๐๐ง๐ฆ ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ก๐๐ through Naiara's vision as she blinked herself awake. She brought her right arm up to shield her eyes, then discovered the gauze wrapped around it. It didn't take long for the memories to flood her mind; the conversation with Will, him leaving to pick up Nora, the truck rolling backwards, the crash.
There were missing pieces after that, just brief missing pieces, just before she took Bobby's hand and they started to get her out. She knows she passed out on the gurney right after they extracted her, that she does remember.
A hushed choir of voices completely silenced as she rubbed her eye. "Hey, Nai, welcome back." Bobby's was the only voice that sounded after everyone went quiet.
The hospital room reeked of formaldehyde, but it was better than the smell of iron she had blocking her nostrils the whole time during and after the crash.
Bobby's hand reached towards the one Naiara had on her eye, her other hand was held by two others, two that she couldn't make out. She smiled over at Bobby, then glanced over to the two holding her other hand, Chimney and Eddie. The two smiled up at her. She then looked around and took in the rest of the room; Theo, asleep on a chair, his head on Dustin's shoulder. Will, outside the room, handing Nora a cup of coffee. Athena, standing behind Bobby, her hand on his back. Karen, behind Chimney and Eddie, holding Denny and Christopher on either side of her, Hen behind her. Finally, Buck, walking up to the door with a bouquet of random flowers.
"I, uh, wanted to get daffodils, but everyone else suggested something different. Thought I'd just get them all." He smiled, showing off the bouquet as he walked over and set it in the vase on the table beside her. "Welcome to the near death experience club, Nosedive." Buck grinned, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder.
She chuckled, "Please, Buck." She lightly coughed, before continuing. "I was apart of that club way before you were."
"Right, forgot about the nosedive incident." He laughed sheepishly, squeezing her shoulder lightly.
"And the dorm fire." Bobby grinned from her other side of her bed. Buck nodded and clicked his tongue before moving to sit beside Theo.
She nodded along, as others began piping up to list the times that they were aware of when Naiara almost died. Theo bringing up the time from when she was five when she tripped off a cliff into a lake, a time when she couldn't swim. Nora telling the story of a science experiment gone wrong in highschool when Naiara burnt down the chemistry lab. Will mentioning the time when she almost got him and Dustin killed along side her in another science experiment gone awry.
"Hey, Nai, do us a favour. Stop almost dying on us, yeah?" Eddie smiled at her, squeezing the small bit of her hand he was holding.
"I'll do my best, Edmundo."
