TO GRIN AND BEAR IT was a mantra Evangeline Berry had grown all too accustomed to. Perfectionism demanded a high price from her, forcing Evie to abandon the possibility of truly nurturing her potential before she even had the chance to understand it.
THAT SAID, HER POTENTIAL became both the angel and the devil that hovered over her shoulder—an ever-present reminder of what could be, and what might never be.
THE ANGEL was the image she projected through the halls of McKinley High—effortlessly flawless, poised, and undeniably admired. The angel was the way she could befriend nearly everyone she met, always the first to flash a smile or lend a hand. The angel was the mask she wore so well that no one suspected a thing.
THE DEVIL was the passion she had for dance, but she convinced herself it wasn't real—that she had the love, but not the talent. The devil was the fear that clung to her every step, the deep-rooted worry that perhaps, just maybe, the harsh self-judgment she carried was true—that Evangeline Berry wasn't enough for the world. The devil was her habit of living for everyone else, to the point where she had forgotten how to live for herself.
PERHAPS A MONTH-LONG ARTS CAMP—in Detroit, of all places—was the last thing Evie wanted. But there was one thing she couldn't resist: the puppy-eyed look her twin, Rachel, flashed whenever she really wanted something. And Rachel really wanted this. After much pleading, their fathers caved, and the Berry twins found themselves on their way to the so-called larger-than-life city (compared to Lima, at least), ready—or not—for whatever it had to offer.
AND AS MUCH AS EVIE HATED THE IDEA OF A CAMP REVOLVED AROUND THE ARTS, she loved her sister (most days) and reluctantly agreed, praying no one from school would find out she was voluntarily subjecting herself to jazz hands and show tunes.
BUT AS IT TURNED OUT, the trip wasn't as unbearable as she expected. Even if Evie had spent years dancing with the precision of a future ballerina, but she never imagined that performing could feel like this. That music could move through her the way it did. And she certainly never expected to discover that she could sing. Not just sing, but really sing.
THIS NEW TALENT caught the attention of Jesse St. James—a boy with an ego that could rival her own. His arrogance was almost as captivating as his voice, and Evie couldn't deny how infuriatingly charming he was. Jesse, like her, was both an angel and a devil. The perfect embodiment of what she was drawn to and what she was terrified of. The kind of person who could challenge everything she thought she knew about herself.
SUDDENLY . . . EVIE DIDN'T HAVE ANY REASON TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE CAMP AFTER ALL.
WHEN SUMMER ENDED, Evie was more than ready to leave Detroit (and Jesse) in her rearview mirror. Rachel went back to dreaming about Broadway, and Evie slipped back into her perfectly constructed high school life. That is, until Sue Sylvester forced her into the Glee Club as an undercover spy, tasked with tearing the dinky club apart. And when Sue Sylvester gave an order, Evie knew better than to refuse.
THEN CAME THE FIELD TRIP TO CARMEL HIGH. A desperate attempt to scope out the competition landed the New Directions in the auditorium of Vocal Adrenaline.
It was the moment Evie locked eyes with Jesse St. James that she knew three things:
1. That devil on her shoulder was about to get a lot bigger.
2. This whole plan was going to be more complicated than she thought.
3. Rachel was going to kill her.

DEE SPEAKS:
HEY! As I'm sure everyone knows, I'm notorious for making fanfics and then never actually continuing them, but over Christmas break I rewatched all of Glee again (for the millionth time) and I remembered just how much I actually adore Jesse St. James— further, Jonathan Groff— and I wished that he got more screen time so here I am with a Glee fic despite 2009 being 16 years ago... but anyways, here you go.
Few things to note—
1. This story is mostly cannon. Although I do follow a good portion of the big plot lines in Glee, not everything happens that that is supposed to or isn't in order, and additionally I'll be adding a lot to the plot.
2. Although this is a fan fiction of Jesse, it's not just simply going to be him. Evie's life will have ups and downs and she's a confused teenager and not everything will revolve around Jesse— so if that's what you're looking for, I fear you may need look elsewhere (I won't be offended).
3. My original characters are flawed people because I, myself, have learned and grown a lot over the years and it only makes sense to allow a bunch of teenagers to do the same. The girls I created, Evie specifically, actually mean so much to me so I truly am excited to share them with you.
4. If you've watched Glee (which I'm sure you have, unless you just love Groffsauce and are here for the fun of it... slay btw) I'm sure you're well aware that there are many insults and dialogue that wouldn't be appropriate for the context of 2024. However, by my own choice, I'm choosing to keep the original script and not use substitutes (for the most part— if there's a slur, I absolutely will not say it) because it makes the book feel more authentic to me.
Anyways. I hope you enjoy this acid trip of a fan fiction and don't hesitate to leave votes or comments. Seriously, I'm a sucker for comments on everything, it makes my entire day.
Love you most,
Dee ♡ ̆̈
