chapter 3
~ Five hour flight and then a four hour train ride? ~
I wake up the next morning to something tickling my face. It's not a prominent annoyance but I'm a light sleeper and being touched by anything, even if it's just a fly, will wake me up. My eyes naturally squint when I open them as the new addition of bright light hits them. I turn my head to the side in hopes that whatever it is that is bugging me leaves, but to my utter displeasure, it follows me, now tickling my temple. I sit up, wanting nothing but to go back to sleep, and realise that a strand of Jungkook's hair had come untucked from the makeshift man bun he threw it into last night.
Well, now I know what was tickling me.
I make the brave decision to lean over his face as I can't see from here if he's awake or not, not wanting him, a mere acquaintance (if that), to hear my groggy morning voice. I hold the two French braids my hair is styled in away from his face, minimising the risk of waking him up if they brush his face, and lean. His eyes are closed and I find myself staring at his face. I hadn't been able to get a good look at it until now. I knew he was handsome from the moment I looked up for the first time, but now I'm really looking, I notice finer details that make him even more good looking to me. Like the little beauty spot under his bottom lip, that only peeks out if he purses his lips together tightly, or the scar that's about a centimetre and a half in length, running across his left cheekbone. I find these little things so endearing that it makes me want to-
"What are you doing?" I hear a slightly raspy, deep voice ask.
My strained attention on Jungkook's features fades and I'm now met with said man, who still has his eyes closed, smiling lightly.
"I was... checking to see if you were awake," I say. It's not a total lie, that was my main objective for being in the position I'm in.
He opens his eyes and his smile grows impossibly wide at my now slightly reddened cheeks. "Ta da!" He announces in a soft whisper once his gaze meets mine.
I go to make a sarcastic reply when the speakers announce, "the flight to Incheon airport will begin boarding in an hour. We apologise for the delay."
"Only one more hour to go. I'm going to go and get a coffee, do you want anything?" I ask, standing up. He catches his chin between his index finger and thumb as he thinks and I internally squeal at how cute the gesture is- I never said that.
"A hot chocolate?" He questions, seemingly unsure of his choice.
"You sure? Do you want something to eat too? I'm going to get myself some breakfast."
"Okay then. A hot chocolate and a blueberry muffin please," he replies, smiling brightly. I nod and leave to the coffee shop on the other end of the gate.
When I return with our food and drinks, Jungkook is in an upright position looking down at his laptop, frantically typing something.
"What are you doing?" I ask, handing over his hot chocolate and a brown paper bag with the muffin in.
"Signing up to a job-hunting site," he replies after thanking me.
"Jungkook," I begin, grasping his attention by lifting his hands from the keyboard and into his lap. "It's nearly Christmas. No company is going to be employing people this close to the biggest holiday of the year. Enjoy your Christmas first and start searching in the New Year, okay? That's the best time of year to do it as well," I advise. He thinks for a second and then sighs, looking down at his hands in his lap.
"You're right. I may not be able to enjoy Christmas this year but everyone else will be so no one is going to be interested in hiring a recently fired twenty-three year old when Christmas is two days away," he says, shutting his laptop and putting it back in his carry-on bag.
"Exactly. But you are going to enjoy Christmas. You're going to spend it with your friends, right?" I ask, nudging his shoulder in attempts to cheer him up.
"Yeah, I am," he replies, a faint smile playing on his lips. "Thank you, Miah, you've honestly given me better advice in the last fifteen minutes than anyone has in my entire life," he smiles, peeling back the wrapper on his muffin before biting into it.
I smile in response and begin eating my bacon sandwich.
Half an hour later and the first boarding call rips through the speakers. Jungkook and I gather our things and begin queueing up with the other people who had stayed over night to catch their flight home.
"It's been really nice meeting you, Jungkook," I say after we've had our boarding passes checked and begin walking down the shuttle to the plane. "Maybe one day we'll cross paths again."
He smiles, "I'd like that. It was really nice meeting you too, Miah."
We board the plane and get directed down different aisles to our seats and I can't help the sad feeling growing in me that I may never see him again. I wish I'd asked for his number.
I scan the aisles for my seat and when I finally reach it, I see a young man with his face turned away from me occupying the seat beside mine. I slide into the seat after putting my carry-on in the over head locker and the guy next to me turns his head to look straight in front. I side-eye him, trying not to make it obvious that I'm trying to scope out the person I have to spend the next five hours beside. I'm shocked when he turns to face me to introduce himself, I presume, both our eyes widening in surprise and a glint of happiness.
"Jungkook!" I beam.
"Hey, Miah!" He replies, "guess you're stuck with me for the next five hours."
I scoff mockingly, "please. You can't get rid of me that easily, mister."
He chuckles then offers an earphone to me. "Want to watch a movie with me to pass time?" He asks with a gorgeous smile.
"Sure," I reply, taking the earphone and putting it in my ear. I shuffle closer to him to get a better view of the screen on the back of the chair in front of him and notice one of my favourite movies is about to play: Love Simon.
"I love this movie," I say, looking up at Jungkook who presses play.
"I've never seen it, but it sounded good. No spoilers," he says, turning to point at me with warning.
I chuckle, nodding and we settle down to watch the movie together.
Somehow I ended up falling asleep at some point during the movie and when I wake up, a stewardess tells me that the plane will be landing in about ten minutes. I then realise my head is on Jungkook's shoulder while his is on top of mine as he sleeps and I quickly move away. I wake him up and tell him that we're landing in a few minutes, not mentioning the awkward topic of us sleeping on one another.
When we land, we go through customs, which is a much quicker process than security in Japan as we're landing home. Once we leave the airport, Jungkook hails a taxi and we both get in.
"Incheon railway station please," Jungkook tells the driver and we leave.
"Nearly home, just a four hour train journey and we're there," he smiles tiredly.
"Four hours?!"
