Chapter Twenty Seven

Gally had vanished when Ada woke up the next morning. This wasn't particularly helpful when you considered the fact she got lost the night before.

However, she somehow managed to find her room and sneak inside before Brenda woke up from her sleep. Ada felt very grateful Brenda was such a deep sleeper so she couldn't question and tease her for being mysteriously absent during the night.

Or so she thought.

It was much later on, after a full day of planning out their rescue mission for Minho, that Ada realised she was quite, quite wrong about how deep of a sleeper Brenda was. Gally, Newt and Thomas all disappeared into the City to capture Teresa, and so as Ada stayed back again, Brenda was given another chance to ask her about Gally.

"You were with him last night, right?"

Brenda had been tailing Ada around the room, with the other girl pretending not to hear her many questions, but the last one forced her to stop. She whirled around, her eyes wide, and she immediately shushed her.

"How did you know I was gone last night?"

Brenda scoffed, posing the other an unamused look. Then, realising that Ada was fully serious, she chuckled a little.

"You're not sneaky, you know. You tripped over a few times whilst trying to leave."

Ada waved a dismissive hand, trying to ignore the embarrassed blush that threatened her cheeks. Brenda's smirk told her that she spotted her flustered state, choosing to question her again.

"Admit it! You were in his room."

Ada cursed the fact she couldn't hide stuff well, and the fact she really did like Brenda enough to just tell her. It didn't seem like the girl would've given in easily anyway.

"I was, but I honestly have no idea how I got there."

Brenda's face first flooded with confusion, but then she laughed, and it was clear she didn't believe her. Just as the girl in return attempted to explain the situation, four figures came into the room, one of whom had a bag on their head.

The boys had returned with Teresa.

The nicer side of Ada felt a little bad about the way they captured her, but the angry part - which was much more present - was perfectly fine with it. Teresa ruined everything, after all.

As Gally guided Teresa to a chair, Ada felt suddenly reminded of his vendetta against the girl back in the Glade. It felt like a different life, because it was so different from how everything was now. The only thing that was perhaps the same was Gally's distaste for Teresa.

Although that's probably a little different as well. Because he's probably grown more hatred towards her.

When Gally first heard what Teresa had done, he couldn't deny that his first thought was how back in the Glade, he was suspicious of her - and it turned out he was right to be. However, this sense of triumph disappeared in less than a second, thanks to the overwhelming sadness for Minho being held captive by WCKD.

Gally couldn't care less that Minho almost killed him. In fact, he almost admired the boy's quick thinking. Gally knew that Minho was trying to protect Thomas - which Chuck also managed to do successfully - and he knew it wasn't personal, no matter how resentful the boy was to all of them previously in the Glade.

The point was that now, Gally hated Teresa more than ever. The level at which he despised her in the Glade was so minimal in comparison that he almost missed feeling it. To tell the truth, he longed for the time when the girl didn't bother him so much. Because even now, with her tied to a chair, she was managing to get on his nerves.

Teresa had a bag over her head yet she was completely still. Ada was aware they lured her using Thomas - who seemed pretty monotone about acting as bait for the girl's attention. He had been quite quiet for a while, and Ada wished she knew why a lot sooner than when she found out.

Newt let out a frustrated sigh, seemingly worked up, and then flashed a false smile at the group. They were gathered around the table, simply just watching their hostage in intrigue and amusement, not even bothering to take the bag from her head.

"Right, shall we get this over with?" He asked, in a sarcastically bright tone.

Before anyone could even bother disagreeing, Newt had pulled the bag from Teresa's head, and Ada was met by her startled eyes for the first time in over six months. It was a strange thing. She was never particularly close to Teresa; but knowing how she was close to Thomas yet had no trouble betraying him made her blood boil.

"Gally? How are you-"

Gally almost let a smirk pass his lips at Teresa' surprise. He did find it very entertaining to see everyone shocked he was still alive. He couldn't wait to see Minho again for this reason.

"Here's how we're gonna do things." He spoke in a demanding tone, and Ada immediately felt her heart leap into her throat. "We have questions for you, and you're gonna answer them exactly how we need you to."

He straightened up from where he was leaning on the table, grabbing a chair and watching Teresa sternly. Ada shuffled uneasily in her seat, her face flustered due to how alarmingly attractive she was finding Gally.

It was a shock to the system really, seeing him act like this. It wasn't that Ada didn't notice how good Gally looked when she saw him again, but she wasn't prepared for the boy act so tough with Teresa. And she was freaking out.

"Where are you keeping Minho?"

"You really think I'm gonna-"

Teresa made her first mistake in letting her eyes wander away from Gally and towards where Ada, Thomas, and the others were all sat and watching in the background.

"-Hey!" Gally cut in, slamming down the chair in front of her and sitting on it. "Don't look at him. Why are you looking at him? Look at me. He's not gonna help you."

Teresa jumped, clearly startled, but Ada found her mouth falling open; unintentionally leaning forwards as she was watching the scene so intently. Frypan nudged her arm, and her cheeks flared up red as she shuffled back into her previous positioning.

"We know Minho is in that building. Where?"

Ada couldn't see Gally's face from where she sat, but she knew he was wearing a stern expression that forced Teresa to answer. She also knew that although Thomas hated Gally still, no one else would be able to make Teresa answer their questions like Gally could.

"Sub-level 3. In holding with the others."

"How many?"

Ada's eyes floated towards Newt, who she could tell was relieved to have some sort of idea as to where Minho was; even though they had no clue what Sub-level 3 was.

"Twenty eight."

"So that's twenty nine people total that you're willing to torture, yet you're not willing to offer yourself up for WCKD's experiments." Ada cut in, suddenly feeling spiteful. "Interesting."

Teresa looked to her then, and she squirmed under the girl's inquisitive stare. She didn't seem bothered by Ada's obviously spiteful words. From her peripheral vision, she could also see Gally's eyes on her, but he was smirking.

Gally's attention had then turned to Brenda who was playing a game with cards that was unfamiliar to the Gladers. She attempted to teach them all how to play, but it failed miserably, and so the group gave up.

"I can make twenty eight work." She said, shrugging.

"No, you guys don't get it." Teresa retorted, shaking her head furiously. "It's all restricted. There's no way of getting in without thumbprint ID."

"That's why you're coming with us." Thomas finally spoke up, barely looking at Teresa.

"Well, does she have to?" Gally pondered, and Ada tilted her head questioningly. "We don't actually need her."

He got up then, walking back towards the table where Ada sat, and grabbing a scalpel. Despite the obvious gross connotations of it all, when he winked at Ada, the girl felt her heart melting.

"Gally, come on." Thomas replied sternly, and Ada could feel that all familiar tension between the boys rising up again.

This time, Gally wasn't the one initiating it. He barely seemed bothered by Thomas, instead, his angry eyes were fully focused on Teresa.

"You guys squeamish? I know she's done a hell of a lot worse to Minho." He pointed the scalpel accusingly at Teresa, and instead of arguing back at him again, Thomas looked to Ada.

The girl realised that she was the one who was most likely to be able to stop Gally. Feeling a strange amount of responsibility on herself, she hopped up and closed her hand around Gally's; the one holding the medical instrument.

"Let's just take a breather, shall we?" She murmured teasingly, and no matter how angry Gally may have been before, it completely dissipated.

He let the girl take the scalpel from him with a small yet triumphant smile, and she passed it over to Thomas, who was on his feet and addressing their hostage. Gally slumped back on the edge of the table, leading Ada to do the same and choosing to lean slightly into his side.

"It wouldn't make a difference. You can do what you like to me,"

"So we can chop off her finger?" Gally mumbled questioningly to Ada, making her narrowly avoid laughing in the serious situation.

"You're not gonna get through the front door."

"We're tagged, we know that." Thomas said dismissively, stopping right in front of Teresa and holding out the scalpel. "But you're gonna help with that as well."

To be fair to her, Teresa did help with that.

It took her a little while, but soon enough, she had removed the chips from each of the Gladers. Ada sat with Frypan and Gally, watching Thomas get his own one removed, wincing each time she applied pressure on the fresh wound on her neck; in an attempt to wipe away the small trickles of blood.

"She definitely had fun with that." Gally muttered, throwing down his own rag, and glaring at the girl across the room.

"You're definitely right." Frypan said in agreement, a small smile on his lips at the way he was able to joke with Gally once again.

Within ten minutes, Thomas was done, and Ada was up and attempting to get together some last minute supplies that she might need for their mission. But, Thomas had other ideas.

"Hey, can I borrow you for a second?"

His hand was resting on the girl's arm, and his expression was nervous and searching, as though afraid of something. A little curious, Ada simply just nodded, and followed him to a quieter area.

"So, what's up?"

Thomas looked like panic had fully settled in inside him, but he also looked like he had the gained the courage to speak. He met her eyes and took a deep breath before saying,

"I like you."

For a moment, she didn't register his words. And then when her brain kick started, she did a double-take.

"You- you like me?"

She almost wished that he was joking, because there was nothing she wanted more than for the person admitting he liked her to be Gally. It made her feel awful, but she couldn't help it. She just didn't like Thomas.

But Thomas liked Ada. And she felt mind blown.

He nodded to confirm, visibly relaxed after blurting out the confession. As he eyed her expectantly, she realised that she was supposed to speak.

"Thomas I- I had no idea you liked me and I just-"

A pattering of footsteps was audible from a few feet away. They stopped abruptly, and Ada immediately clamped her mouth shut.

She knew exactly who she didn't want it to be. But she also knew that somehow - of course - it was going to be that person.

Whirling around, as she expected, she came face to face with Gally. He was wide eyed, completely aware he walked in on a serious conversation, but Ada couldn't see the undertones of jealousy that peeked through from his predominantly innocent expression.

"Gally, hey."

Ada was praying that he either didn't hear any of their conversation, or he heard enough to figure that she wasn't interested in him in return. Unluckily for her, neither of these outcomes were the case.

Because, as luck would have it, he had only heard Ada's confirmation of Thomas' feelings for her. This meant that Gally now thought she felt the same in return; as there was no indication otherwise.

It felt like he was back in the Glade. He instantly recognised Thomas' interest in her then, and it only hurt that he was being confirmed of it now.

"I uh-" Gally ducked down his head to avoid the girl's gaze. "I'll go. Ada, whenever you're ready, we can head into the City. Just let me know."

He flashed them both a fake smile before turning directly on his heel. He swiftly left them both alone again, but Ada's heart was pumping with adrenaline, and there was something inside her that was telling her to go after him.

"I'm sorry Thomas, but..."

She trailed off, lamely pointing in the direction Gally took. Thomas didn't look angry, only a tiny bit upset, but he was such a nice guy that he only nodded. It was pretty much confirmation of who the person Ada liked in return was.

"Yeah, I guess you should go." He muttered as he watched the girl's retreating back.

She could see Gally's figure still walking as quickly as possible, and as far away as he could manage. Sighing in irritation, she was forced to jog to catch up to his strides.

When she did, he only glanced briefly to her, smiling tightly and grabbing the two WCKD suits they had to wear for rescuing Minho. She took one from him, thanking him, and let a silence settle for a few minutes as they began to put them on over their clothes.

"Gally, look, I don't know what you heard back there-"

"-It doesn't matter." He cut in, smiling widely and completely falsely now. "We need to focus on rescuing Minho."

"Of course." She muttered in reply.

She grabbed the mask she was supposed to put over her head, and hesitated. If she was going to say anything, she had to do it now.

But maybe Gally was right. Maybe they needed to focus on rescuing Minho.

"You know I don't like Thomas, right?"

"Honestly, I don't believe you."

She faltered then, watching him questioningly, and feeling annoyance bubbling up. He was joking, right?

It didn't look like it.

"Gally, you literally didn't hear a single thing that happened there, how would you know?"

She found herself becoming spiteful now, frustrated with his stupidity. He let out a harsh laugh, making Ada's heart tug in pain.

"I heard enough. Don't give me all that bullshit, okay? It was pretty obvious Thomas liked you, and clearly you feel the same."

Gally turned away to continue fitting on his WCKD suit, but Ada felt infuriated now. Not only was he acting incredibly immature, but he was completely wrong. And, he wasn't listening.

"No, Gally, I don't feel the same shucking way." She said in a low voice, struggling to not shout, but knowing the others were close by.

"Oh really, of course you don't-"

"Why don't you just believe me?"

They were close in each other's faces now, Gally's voice nearly edging on exclamation but Ada fully shouting out of increasing frustration. She stepped closer towards him, leaving barely any space between their bodies, and the boy could feel his heart picking up in pace as he desperately thought of an excuse for his clear jealousy.

"I don't believe you because-"

"-Gally, I like you, okay?" Her voice died down, and Gally immediately fell silent, in disbelief.

He was watching her with wide eyes and an slacked jaw, something in his expression telling Ada that he still didn't quite believe her. But he was clearly taken aback by the confession, only made more intrigued by her obvious embarrassment.

Her chest was heaving for breath and her face still only inches from his own. There was an unbearable amount of tension hanging between them, and Ada was desperate to break it. So instead of saying anything else, she took his obvious jealousy and sudden curiosity as the hints he was trying to throw out.

She kissed him.

The action wasn't anything like her. She wasn't a particularly compulsive or risk-taking person. She was usually logical, calculating, and most definitely a planner.

In that moment, she threw all of it out of the window, and tugged Gally's face to meet hers in a desperate kiss that she had been longing to have for months. The boy responded so quickly that she forgot she didn't know for certain - despite having a strong suspicion - he felt the same way.

His hands immediately fell to her waist as hers clung onto the front of his shirt - the WCKD uniform only pulled up to his hips. He walked her backwards towards the table, never detaching their lips, and she moved quickly to sit up on top and use her legs to pull him even closer.

His lips were so soft yet so daring; teasing her by leaning forwards and kissing her eagerly, then drawing back a few inches and letting her chase after him. She could feel her heart pounding in her chest, probably so much that Gally could feel it, but she didn't care.

Her hands ran down his chest and one of his snaked around the small of her back, whilst the other had rested on the top of her thigh; making her thoughts scatter helplessly. She couldn't think about anything when his lips were now ghosting over her neck, and his touch was still lingering on her thigh.

And then she heard footsteps.

"Gally," She mumbled lowly, using the hands on his chest to push him away just enough so his lips were out of reach.

She already missed kissing him, and it seemed the feeling was mutual, if his flustered cheeks and breathless eyes were anything to go by. He watched her impatiently, clearly wanting to go back to what they were doing.

She prevented this from happening, straining her hearing to where she heard the footsteps coming from. The only sounded audible between them were the short breaths they were intaking to try and breathe some oxygen again.

"You guys ready to go?"

Frypan called from a few feet away, Ada using her foot to push Gally a short distance back from her and making herself seem as natural as possible. She was sure Fry would be able to see directly through her, but she at least didn't want him to address it in front of Gally.

"Yeah. Let's go save Minho."
