Chapter Twenty Eight

Ada and Gally chose not to mention the kiss.

They walked side by side into the parking lot of the WCKD facility, not questioned by anyone because of the uniform they wore. Ada was trying to make herself look taller and scarier than she really was, but Gally was managing it perfectly fine without trying.

There was an odd tension hanging in the air between them, but they didn't have the time to mention it. There was too much at stake.

They caught sight of Teresa, accompanied by two guards they knew to be Thomas and Newt, coming down from a higher level in the building. They were making their way towards a back stairwell that Teresa told them to be constantly deserted, therefore perfect for them to use.

Teresa used her thumbprint to unlock the door to the stairwell, and then they were free to follow her in afterwards. When the door closed shut behind them, and they checked to ensure they were alone, they could relax a little.

Thomas led Teresa straight down a flight of stairs but Gally hung back, his eyes latched onto an electrical box on the wall. He called out for them to wait as he checked it over with his hands.

"I can use this." He announced, pulling his mask up to reveal his already concentrated expression.

"Chuck me the walky-talky." Thomas asked, civilly, and Gally did so without argument.

It was still so peculiar to see them both working together - and well. No one could deny the fact that when Thomas and Gally weren't arguing, they made a good team. Although, they both still had small hints of resentment towards one another: that may or may not be to do with the girl they were both head over heels for.

Newt doubled over as he freed himself from his mask, coughing and spluttering until he was panting for breath. It was hard for Ada to mask her worry for him, but she had to, for Newt's sake. Her concern would only heighten his stress.

As Gally began to break into the electrical box, Thomas spoke to Fry over the walky-talky. Ada couldn't help but crack a smile at the sound of her friend's voice, easily telling from his slightly panicked tone that he was at a somewhat precarious height above the ground.

Thomas then checked in with Brenda, who relayed back that she was working on her part of the plan. Gally finished up on whatever he was doing with the electricals, and then hurried the group up the stairs and on with their rescue mission.

Ada felt nervous as they marched the corridors towards the section of the building that the subjects were being kept in. She knew it was a mixture of excitement to see Minho again, but also terror that they could possibly get caught.

"This is it." Teresa announced, stopping beside a sliding door.

They stared at it for a few long moments, uncertain what to do or whether to open it. But then, their next moves were planned out for them. The door was opened from the other side, and an actual WCKD guard stood before them.

Thomas' reflexes were quicker than the man's, and he immediately shot him down to the ground, where he writhed in pain from the electric bullet. Ada knew that the man was in immense pain, but she also felt grateful for having a weapon that didn't kill anyone.

She shot ahead of her; ashamed to say that it was pretty much blindly. She didn't stop first to look at the people she would be hurting, but why should she? They were all part of WCKD's scheme of torturing innocent kids.

And their surprise ambush seemed to have worked.

They knocked all of the soldiers out cold, finishing the fight with no casualties of their own. Without missing a beat, Ada jogged towards one of the doors the guards seemed to have been keeping an eye on, peering in to see if there were kids inside.

And there were.

The room was small, too small for the many kids crammed inside. She apparently scared the shit out of one of them - who had been approaching the door and then was jump scared by her sudden figure.

The boy she scared was accompanied by four or five others, all of whom couldn't have been older than fifteen. Their room had two three-layered bunk beds, with no space for personal belongings, or anything at all. It was void of any colour, any personality, any life.

It was torture.

No wanting them to be trapped for a single second longer, Ada unlocked the door and pulled it wide open. Yanking the mask from her face - her uniform being the most present cause of their fear - she hoped they'd feel a little reassured by her young and friendly features.

"It's okay, I'm not gonna hurt you."

She attempted to gain the trust of the kids by speaking slowly and carefully, glancing back to see her friends going to the other rooms around her. Turning back, she let a genuinely hopeful smile fall onto her lips.

"We're gonna get you out of here. Come on."

She beckoned the kids out into the observation area for the WCKD guards. She made it her duty to dart around the swarms of them, ensuring they were all okay.

"How do I get into the vault?"

Her attention was stolen by Gally's demanding question. She turned to see him holding a gun to the throat of a conscious soldier, who looked pretty terrified by his looming figure and intimidating eyes.

She briefly let her mind wander back to their kiss: his lips warm on her own, her legs wrapped around his waist, his hand on her thigh.

For the love of god, do not get distracted right now.

"You can't." The soldier murmured back, before dropping into unconsciousness.

Gally let out a frustrated growl, releasing his threatening grip on the man and straightening up to approach the vault doors. Ada felt her heart quicken but turned back to the kids, gathering them all in one area so she could better keep an eye on them.

"I think this is gonna take a while." She could hear Gally telling Thomas.

The girl looked at Newt and then Thomas, becoming increasingly confused at the lack of Minho. Surely he'd be with the rest of the kids, right?

"He's not here." Thomas mumbled. "Where is he?"

He looked down at Teresa intimidatingly, making her shrink away. It took her less than a second to move to the monitors in the middle of the room after Thomas asked where their friend was.

"He's been moved to the medical wing." She told them, her eyebrows furrowing in confusion and concern. "It's on the other side of the building."

"Okay, let's go." Thomas replied instantly, going to grab his mask.

"I'm coming."

Thomas looked alarmed by Newt's sudden and certain response, terrified to see that he wanted to leave Gally; who would soon be giving him the thing that would ultimately save his life - or at least slow the process of his journey to death.

"No. You gotta stay with Gally, get the serum."

"You won't be able to do this by yourself. And Minho's our priority, remember?"

It then became quite clear why he wanted to go. He wanted to see Minho, more than any of them could possibly understand.

Thomas hadn't responded to that, but it was clear that he couldn't argue with Newt. Especially when Minho meant more to him than any of them - as they all knew how the blonde felt about the other boy.

The girl was biting her lip anxiously, deep in thought about it all. They were already being forced to shift around their plan, so what was the harm in doing it some more? She had promised not to leave Thomas and Newt's sides for the entirety of the rescue mission, but it had become clear that she'd be better used elsewhere in that moment.

"Look, I think I should stay with Gally." Ada told Thomas, in a low voice.

They both glanced over to the boy, who was already working hard at trying to get open the vault door. He seemed focused, too focused to pay attention to the dozens of kids he'd have to be looking after if they did leave him alone.

"Really?" Thomas asked in return, although it was disagreement only for the fact it was Gally.

"He's not gonna be able to keep a track of all these kids, Thomas." She looked over them all, biting her lip anxiously. "And if some more guards find us, we've got a better chance the two of us rather than just him."

Thomas couldn't argue. He let out a sigh and then nodded, in defeat. She couldn't stop herself from leaning forwards to give him a hug, just in case anything happened in the time they were apart. Forget about the confessions made prior to the mission; they were friends.

Ada did the same with Newt, squeezing him tightly, and firmly ignoring Teresa's eyes on her. They were harshly reminded of their time-sensitive plan as Gally's words hit them from behind.

"We don't have the time to worry about this. Just go, I'll meet you with the serum!"

"Alright, let's go." Thomas muttered in agreement, pushing Teresa forwards and beckoning Newt with him.

They started down the corridor, purposefully. Gally yelled a good luck to Thomas, who didn't reply, but gave a small smile to the man he was beginning to warm to.

"Hey!" Ada suddenly called after them, catching Newt's attention first. "Tell Minho I love him, okay?"

He tilted his head questioningly, but nodded. She knew she could rely on him to do as she wished; and she didn't doubt the fact that the boy wanted to tell him that himself.

"You're gonna see him too."

He sounded like he was trying to convince himself more than reassure her. She simply just smiled in return.

"I know. Doesn't hurt to say it twice, though."

The ghost of a smile passed Newt's lips, and he nodded slightly in agreement. Just as he had turned on his heel again to join Thomas and Teresa, Ada shouted to him again.

"And I love you Newt."

She said it constantly to them all. They teased her for being so soppy, but she didn't care. She did love her friends, and she'd tell them as much as she possibly could.

But instead of giving her the usual teasingly grossed out reply, Newt merely just smiled, and genuinely too. Then a rare thing occurred. He responded with almost the exact same wording.

"I love you too, shank."

The three of them disappeared, and Ada and Gally were left with dozens of kids and a highly protected facility to escape from. Gally was still breaking into the vault door with his tools, and so Ada took the time to answer any and all questions the kids had for her.

The girl was mid way through a story about her and Frypan cooking in the Glade when Gally had finally broken into the vault. She let herself trail off and then jogged over to the door where Gally was grabbing the serum.

Satisfied that they could save Newt, Ada checked the corridors for any signs of WCKD's workers, and then went to turn back and suggest leaving. She found the group of kids grouped beside a wall, and Gally staring directly at her, nervously.

He had given the serum to the young boy Ada accidentally jump scared. He made it perfectly clear how important it was, and the boy seemed more than capable of taking on the responsibility of keeping it safe.

"Listen, Ada," Gally began hurriedly, with the girl only half listening. She was beyond focused on keeping the kids safe, but Gally's attention was elsewhere. "Ada."

"Yes, Gally?" She eventually snapped, impatiently.

Now that he had begun to talk, he couldn't back out. Gally never thought he'd gain the courage to admit what he was about to admit, but then again, he didn't think he'd ever see the girl again.

Or kiss her.

"You remember that day, back at the Glade? We argued. Over Teresa of all people." He begun, his voice already moving at the speed of light and shaking considerably, because of his nerves.

"And then we nearly kissed."

The simple reminder made Ada's heart skip a beat. And then her eyes quickly flickered to the large number of kids watching the pair in awe. As much as she wanted to remind Gally of this fact, she wanted to know what he was going to say more.

"I was such a pussy, for not just kissing you. But I was terrified. The way I felt about you, it terrified me. It still does. Not a day went past where I didn't think about you, Ada. And then you kissed me, and I don't know if you really meant anything by it, but I had been wanting to do that for a while."

She froze completely then, not being able to tear her eyes from him as he poured his heart out to her. He wasn't done, however, because the thing that had the most weight hadn't been said yet.

"I'm in love with you." He admitted.

Now it had.

Gally's face was burning brightly now, but he was so pumped with adrenaline that he could barely feel it. And then due to her lack of response, the adrenaline had come to a standstill, and Gally felt the need to compensate for his word vomit.

"Shit, I feel like an idiot for just blurting all this out, you probably didn't want to kiss me and you definitely don't love me-"

I kissed him earlier. Is he really that stupid?

"-You are an idiot." She interrupted, bluntly.

A flash of pain passed through Gally's expression, but before he could even question her as to why she made that statement, she had done something drastic.

She had taken the two steps forwards - where previously laid a gap between them - and leaned up on her tiptoes, hooking her arms around his neck. She heard his breath hitch before their lips met in an urgent kiss.

Her actions elicited an instant response from the boy. Gally's arms immediately winded around her waist, leaning towards her to kiss her more deeply and surely. The stubble of his faint beard scratched gently on her face as they kissed, but the only thing she could really focus on was his lips.

They were chapped, but so warm. A flame had settled in her chest, roaring away and warming her whole body as they kissed as though their lives depended on it.

She blocked out all other distractions at that moment; the kids watching them, - in hindsight they shouldn't have kissed in front of all of them - the casual threat of death from WCKD finding them, or from the Flare because after all they didn't know who else wasn't immune.

But Ada wouldn't even care if this gave her the Flare, because it was the most amazing thing she had felt in her life. Kissing Gally again.

Once could be seen as an accident. But twice, there was no mistake about that.

Feeling the burning need for oxygen, she tore herself away from the boy. Immediately, her fingers flew up to her tingling lips, brushing over them gently as she stared at Gally with wide eyes. His expression was pretty much identical to how she felt: flustered, nervous, ecstatic.

And then, "Are we gonna get outta here, or..?"

One of the boys from the group of kids spoke up, staring at them both with a bored expression. She turned quickly to him, barking out a yes and beginning to shun them down the corridor of the WCKD facility. As they began to move, she briefly pulled Gally back.

"You're an idiot," Gally's face broke out into a smirk as she spoke breathlessly to him. "for not knowing that I love you too."

The smirk disappeared then, not because he was upset, but because he was in complete awe of his own obliviousness. She took the chance to lean forwards and kiss his cheek, before moving around him to herd the young kids towards their escape.

They followed the path they took to get there, with Ada leading the pack and Gally hanging behind to hold up the rear. Surprisingly, they weren't interrupted by soldiers once on the way, which they would later find out was because of Thomas and Newt causing havoc whilst trying to find Minho.

They had to be careful when they reached the parking lot.

Gally decided it was a good idea to let the kids run through the parking lot, and honestly, they didn't have enough time for Ada to disagree. She rushed them quickly through the whole level, with Gally racing ahead and trying to reach Brenda on the walky-talky.

Instead of receiving a reply, they were met by the bus Brenda was currently occupying.

Ada let out a loud laugh, her hand raking through her hair and her heart beating at a million miles per second. She couldn't lie and say she wasn't terrified they'd get caught before they could save the kids. They hurried the dozens of them on inside, quickly becoming aware of another way their plan had gone askew.

"Where's Newt and Thomas?"

The question hadn't come from Gally or Ada, but from Brenda. The two boys - and Minho - were supposed to be with her.

"Wait with the kids." Gally said, exasperated. "I'll find them."

He pulled down his mask, already backing away from Brenda and the vehicle. A wash of panic passed over Ada's face at the boy retreating, and she had no regrets when she turned to Brenda to say,

"I gotta go with him."

Brenda shook her head mock-disapprovingly, panic clearly present on her face but still managing to let a smile fall onto her lips. Ada stepped back towards Gally, her mask now resting on her head, ready to slip back over her face.

"Of course."

"Wait for us, okay?" Gally called to Brenda, right before he and Ada disappeared back into the facility.

They slowed their pace as they entered the white corridors of the main facility. Ada could feel her heart in her throat, the alarms telling her very clearly that Thomas and Newt must have been noticed in some sort of way.

"Where do we go?" Ada asked the boy under her breath.

She was fighting the urge to slip her hand into his, because it would look a little odd for two WCKD guards to be holding hands. Luckily, she had her gun between her hands, keeping her from doing so.

"Head outside, that's where Thomas and Newt will be going when they find Minho." Gally replied, just as quietly as her.

It was then that they both spotted the group of soldiers jogging towards the back entrance of the building, heading outside. It was the perfect opportunity to blend in.

"Let's stick with them."

They took off in a slow jog, catching up to the group who thankfully didn't notice they weren't supposed to be there. Ada realised then that they should've planned this out in a little more detail; seeing as they had no idea how to overpower the group if they figured out who they really were.

But it was far too late to worry about that then. They had to find Thomas and Newt, and worry about anything else when it came to it.

Luckily for them, they found the boys quicker than they expected to. And, in the most entertaining way.

Three splashes into a deep pool outside the WCKD building caught the attention of the guards Ada and Gally were blending in with. The girl knew exactly who they were, and struggled immensely in stopping herself from laughing as she caught sight of the boys dragging themselves out of the water.

"You three, don't move!"

Instinctively, as one of the soldiers yelled out to her friends, Ada's eyes turned to Gally to see what he was doing. When she saw him directing his gun at the three boys, she copied him; although a little apprehensively.

She could tell from the way he was stepping forwards that he had a plan. He was calculating, cautious and focused. Although, the girl imagined that from an outsider's perspective, he just looked like another guard.

Thomas attempted to reach for his gun, but was stopped by the same guard, who was quickly getting on Ada's nerves. She remained patient as she quickly approached her friends - including Minho, who she hadn't seen in six months.

She wanted to reassure them so badly. She wanted to greet Minho even more badly. But she knew she had to keep herself quiet for the moment, and she knew it was best to wait and see what Gally was doing before doing anything drastic.

She trusted his judgement better than she trusted herself.

Before the soldier could yell out any instructions to the boys, Gally had whirled around and shot him in the chest. Immediately catching on to his plan, Ada shot another one of the men in the stomach, sending him plummeting to the floor, whilst Gally took out the last one.

Pulling off her mask, Ada couldn't stop herself from bursting into giggles; out of pure hysteria but also disbelief as to what she and Gally had just pulled off. She could scarcely believe she could do it, but she did.

"That was the scariest thing I've ever done." Ada said breathlessly, looking at Gally and wanting to kiss him all over again.

He met her with a knowing smile, as if he knew exactly what she was thinking about. A shocked question from the boy she hadn't seen in six months sounded then; which was probably the only thing that would've captured Ada's attention over Gally.

"Gally?"

Minho.

He looked drained: his skin ghastly pale, his eyes clouded and clearly hurting and his hair flattened on his head. He didn't look quite like the Minho she remembered well. Instead, he looked like a shell of him.

But when a small smile cracked on the pained lips of the boy she missed very dearly, she chose to momentarily forget about the things he had to talk about and work through in the future.

She flung her arms around the boy, laughing in delight, and finding herself being welcomed by Minho in return. Spotting Newt, she noticed he appeared somehow drastically worse than when she last saw him, but he looked beyond happy to be back with Minho.

"I missed you shuckface. And in case Newt didn't say earlier, I love you." She mumbled to the boy, who laughed loudly in return; something he hadn't done in a long while.

"Yeah, you too, shank. Even the lovey-dovey part."

He wrinkled his nose in mock disgust, and Ada pulled back to punch him playfully in the arm. He pretended to wince and then cracked up into laughter again. His eyes darted away from the girl, and back onto the boy hovering behind her.

"Hey Minho." Gally greeted, somewhat awkwardly.

The look of surprise returned to Minho's face. His eyebrows furrowed in confusion, but his conscience was feeling cleaner at the realisation he hadn't killed the boy. He didn't question his presence, but it was clear the thought was strong on his mind.

"You guys are nuts." Gally told the three of them, watching them in wild amazement.

He was talking about their jump from a high level room in WCKD down into the pool below. It was insanely nuts, but it was also pretty cool.

Ada could only bring herself to say, "That was awesome."

But they didn't have time to talk about it. At that moment, they had to concentrate on getting Newt to where Brenda would be waiting with the serum.
