Chapter Thirteen
"Hey," Thomas greeted her, his hair flat against his head as it had been wettened by the rain. "What's going on?"
It rained again.
No one was worried like last time. After the fun and games they had the last time it rained, everyone was convinced that the bad luck of the rain in the Glade had run out. But maybe, they should've been worried.
Alby and Minho had gone back in the Glade to retrace the steps Ben had taken, and to see if there was anything different about that particular part of the Maze. Ada's biggest fear was that the Griever that stung Ben would still be there, and that the pair would face the same fate.
"It's only rained twice before." Ada's mind flashed back to the first time it had rained, with her and Gally dancing on the grass before unfortunately being interrupted by Minho. "I was only here for the last time."
Thomas nodded thoughtfully along to her words, as she explained what they did in the Council room. She refrained from telling him about the first time it rained, knowing that it wasn't her business to tell.
For the moment, the rain wasn't heavy, and so Ada finished collecting fruit and veg from the Gardens and headed back to the kitchen to work. Her work wasn't heavily affected by the weather, seeing as it was mostly inside. However, she used every chance she could get to head outside and waste time in chatting to her friends around the Glade. Frypan was never amused by this.
Lunch went by in a breeze.
The girl sat herself with Gally and his Builders, and for the first time, they actually interacted with her. She didn't know if Gally had said anything to them - seeing as she told him of his fear of them not liking her - but they seemed genuine in their efforts to make conversation, and they were all getting along well.
Although, when Gally rested his hand on her thigh for barely a second before getting up from his chair, her brain completely short-circuited. She blurted out a hurried goodbye to the Builders and made her way back to the kitchen so she could hide there until she had recovered.
A few hours later, it still hadn't stopped raining. Newt was stubborn in making everyone continue to work, and it was starting to look like Ada's fear of the Griever could actually be possible.
The boys should've been back hours ago. Yet still, as the rain continued pouring down, they hadn't returned.
Ada had to find Gally. In pouring her heart out to him last night, she actually admitted she was worried about people going back to where Ben was and getting Stung too. It felt like she had predicted the future.
The downpour just like last time, had eventually become unbearable to work in. Newt let everyone wait it out in the Homestead, the blonde boy himself hovering by the entrance of the door and watching the Maze walls with a blank expression.
"Hey," She caught his attention, grabbing his arm as she walked over towards him.
He jolted out of his trance, turning back to her with a fake smile, before realising that it was only her and he didn't have to feign a lack of worry. He exhaled, leaning against the doorway and folding his arms across his chest.
"Why aren't they here?" He asked aloud, but the question was partly directed towards her, as if wondering if she knew what to say.
"They'll be okay, Newt. They have to be."
And she tried to reassure him, she really did. But it was hopeless. Newt was a bundle of nerves, and she wasn't helpful in aiding his worry as she was exactly the same.
She squeezed his hand comfortingly, before leaving the boy to his thoughts, and moving across the Homestead to sit on the end of the bench. Spotting Gally, she remembered her irrational fear of being psychic, and suddenly felt shy to admit it all to him.
When they woke that morning in Gally's bed, they became the idiotic lovesick fools they were when Minho interrupted them out in the rain. Ada's head was resting in the crook of the boy's shoulder, her arm flung across his chest and her legs tangled in his as he played with her hair. And when they made eye contact, they were made painfully aware of their proximity.
Luckily, Ada was able to make a quick getaway, due to the fact she was awfully late for her work in the kitchen. She mumbled this as a quick excuse, sounding pathetic in doing so, but knowing that Frypan would be excruciatingly annoyed with her.
It got a whole lot worse when Newt saw her leaving Gally's room.
He happened to be leaving his own room at the same time as the girl, being opposite from Gally's, meaning that he was directly in front of her when she shut the door. His eyes immediately widened - ready to jump to conclusions - but before he could even ask, she started off down the corridor to escape the inevitable questions. Newt's limp didn't slow down his hurry to catch up to her.
"Did you sleep with Gally?" He hissed at her, quietly to avoid any nosy boys listening in.
"No!" She whirled around in horror and embarrassment, cheeks flaring red at Newt's suggestion. "I couldn't sleep last night so I went to talk to him. We literally slept, Newt."
He gave her a warning glare, puffing his chest out as if he were her older brother and he was trying to protect her. She smirked then, thinking of Newt and Minho's conversation at the bonfire, and turned back to argue,
"So you're telling me that you and Minho haven't-"
Newt was quick to clamp his hand over the girl's mouth when he caught sight of the Runner in question waltzing into the Homestead. He gave the pair a bemused expression, but didn't both asking, and moved around them both to grab his lunch for out in the Maze. When he disappeared, Newt turned back to Ada.
"Don't you dare." He warned in a low voice.
Although the girl wasn't going to say anything to Minho, she found Newt's fear of it far too funny. She watched as the Runner walked back in, pecked the blonde on the cheek, and then disappeared outside to head into the Maze for the day. Newt punched Ada playfully on the arm before she could tease him for that.
And then hours later, Newt was replaying this moment over and over again. Although he was glad that he actually confessed his feelings for Minho to him, he couldn't help but wonder if his worry would be any less if they weren't dating. And of course, as Ada had told him, it wouldn't be. But it didn't stop Newt wondering about it.
Ada caught Gally's eye from the bench as he wandered over to her, his figure slumping down beside her, making her feeling very aware of her shoulder that was brushing his.
"Before you even say anything, you didn't predict this, Ada." He watched her knowingly, and she felt her heart jolt.
He knows me too well.
"I wasn't thinking that." She mumbled in reply, unconvincingly.
This earned a chuckle from Gally, who could see right through her. Just as he was about to attempt to reassure her, a different person spoke before he could.
"Why's everyone freaking out?" Thomas' innocent question hit her ears, and from the corner of her eye, she could see Gally staring at him with suspicion.
Face pale with worries, the girl turned back to Thomas with a false smile plastered on her lips. She barely knew anything compared to most boys in the place, except from Thomas and Chuck, yet he was still going to her for help. He even asked her for tips on Gardening when he was trying out the job, despite the fact she's not a Gardener.
"Minho and Alby should be back by now." But as she spoke aloud, the smile on her lips slipped, and she was left with a worried frown.
The rain subsided, and instantly, the group poured out of the Homestead towards the entrance of the Maze. Thomas was unloading questions onto Newt about Alby and Minho, causing the blonde to eventually snap back at him out of impatience.
Ada patted his shoulder gently, lingering there for a second before moving towards Newt to try and calm him a little. This led Thomas to stare after her with his jaw agape, the place where the girl's hand had laid still tingling. Gally wanted nothing more than to punch the boy directly in the jaw, as he was painfully angry with Thomas' interest in her.
The focus was turned towards the Maze when the walls began to groan into action. A wave of panicked whispers breezed through the group as there was still no sight of the two boys who had disappeared inside so long ago. Ada could feel Newt tensing beside her, his breath hitching with anxiousness.
"They're not gonna make it."
She muttered under her breath, but it still earned a glance from Newt. The pained eyes blinking at her as he shook his head were the most heart breaking thing she had ever seen.
"There!"
Thomas' voice suddenly yelled out as the walls continued to rumble towards each other. And sure enough, in the distance, Ada could see Minho dragging Alby across the floor of the Maze with great difficulty.
"Alby's been stung." The girl blurted out, before she could stop herself.
The rest of the group had began to yell out words of encouragement to Minho hauling the leader towards the Glade. The girl could hear Gally over the rest of them, calling for Minho to just leave Alby there and get himself to safety.
She couldn't speak. She found herself unable to find the right words to yell to Minho, as she watched him in silent fear, struggling with Alby's body and getting them both back to the Glade. He didn't have enough time to do it.
Ada couldn't help but wonder if someone should've gone in there to help them. And apparently, Thomas had been thinking the same thing.
As quick as a flash, the boy darted forwards and slipped through the tiny gap in the wall. Newt's hands lurched forward to grab him, but failed, instead catching air as the Greenie disappeared into the Maze.
And then the walls shut.
Immediately, the Glade had turned into a wild panic. Explosive arguments - for some unexplainable reason - had broken out between some of the boys, with others trying desperately to no prevail, to ask Newt how Thomas was allowed to go inside the Maze.
Newt in return, was frozen to the spot. His eyes were fixed on the still closed walls where the three boys would inevitably be facing death. Because how were they - accompanied by an unconscious Alby and their Greenie - supposed to survive a night in the Maze when those who ran it for years had died? Ada decided in her mind that Minho was their best hope of survival.
Then Newt startled. He began to pace back and forth, people still trying to catch his attention, but he just mumbled to himself under his breath. Ada watched the scene in horror, realising quickly that something had to be done to calm the scene.
If Newt was freaking out, everything would soon go to klunk. Everyone had stopped their own conversations now, just to watch the blonde boy spiral. His eyes were still wide in fear, and as he stalked back to his original spot, he dragged his hand through his hair out of exasperation.
"Holy shit."
His words had finally become audible to everyone watching him. He sounded breathless, panicked, and angry. Ada had never seen him angry before, and she had to admit, she was a little nervous to.
"No one's survived a night in the Maze." He stated simply.
The girl could imagine what was racing through his mind then. Minho, whom he had just started dating; Alby, one of his closest and longest friends in the Glade; Thomas, who was different to the other Greenies, as after the Ben attack, it looked like he could be part of their way out.
"Newt,"
Ada thought by cutting in, she could calm Newt down and reassure the other boys of the Glade. Instead, what she got was,
"No one's survived a fucking night, Ada."
Newt turned firmly on his heel, stalking off, presumably back to his room. Everyone else was left where they were, watching Newt disappear, before returning to the panic they previously turned to at the start of the disaster.
Ada stared after Newt, anxiously biting her lip, and feeling torn. Then, turning back to the group still all gathered together, her eyes caught with Gally's. He was the only other one not freaking out, simply just standing in silence just like her. Then, he mouthed to her,
'Go after Newt, I'll sort these shanks.'
She tilted her head thoughtfully, wanting to do what he said, but also not wanting to leave him with the group of idiotic boys. Although, she was certain Gally could handle it.
'Are you sure?' She mouthed back to him, wanting to confirm it was okay for her to check on the blonde boy. But instead of Gally nodding in return, he did something else.
"Alright shanks, time to get to bed. There's nothing we can do now the doors are closed, we can come back in the morning."
Shooting the boy a gracious smile, Ada turned quickly on her heel and half-walked half-jogged towards the Homestead. When she reached Newt's room, she was nervous that he'd react the same way he did back at the walls: with anger, pain, impatience. But then, she decided that she'd rather try and make him feel better than do nothing at all.
Firstly, she knocked. But she didn't bother waiting for a reply to open the door. Creaking it open slowly, she peeked her head around the ajar door to find Newt slouched on the bed staring at the floor. Clasped in his hands was a jumper that Ada came to realise was Minho's.
"Newt," She said softly, padding across the floor and approaching the bed carefully. "They're gonna be okay."
His head snapped up to meet hers and his grip on the jumper tightened, and for a moment Ada was convinced he would snap at her again. But then his eyes softened, and he faltered completely, nodding for her to sit down beside him. She took the opportunity, and shuffled so her shoulder was against his.
"I'm sorry Minho's trapped in there." She finally decided to say, her eyes fixed on the jumper Newt was fiddling with.
Newt let out the softest chuckle, but his laugh wavered, threatening to release the sob in his throat that was starting to feel like it was choking him. He moved to place the jumper beside him, bringing his hands back into his lap.
"I shouldn't have snapped at you." He said suddenly, and regretfully. "I'm sorry."
She gave him a smile in return, deciding it was safe for her to rest her head on his shoulder. She felt him rest his on top of her own, his breath fanning over her hair and tickling her skin. And in that moment, she felt very grateful to have Newt as a friend.
"You were scared. I am too."
There was a thoughtful pause, and all Ada could hear was Newt's trembling breaths. It was clear that he was debating whether to say something to her. When he replied, she realised he had made him feel comfortable enough to admit his deepest fear.
"I don't want to imagine a world without Minho."
After a talk that extended long into the night, Ada finally left Newt's room. He had crawled into bed, somehow comforted by a few of Ada's uncertain words of reassurance. She, in contrast, left the room with tears in her eyes and only one thought on her mind.
They're going to die out there, aren't they?
Without believing it herself, Ada had convinced Newt that the three boys trapped in the Maze could actually make it out alive. But the more she reassured him, the less she believed it.
And so, she found herself in Gally's room instead of her own.
The Builder would inevitably have worries of his own, but the girl still went to him in hopes that he'd be able to say something to make her feel better. And it wasn't his job to do so, but in that moment she knew he'd be the only person who could help.
That's how they ended up together in Gally's bed for the second night in a row.
